    Got a Reverso medium thin (I’m a smaller guy) for the birth of my first son and then a Master Geographic from the secondary market because I wanted to the smaller 39mm size. I had a soft spot for the brand. It was close to my heart because they had offerings and heritage that could be purchased by an average guy. It made me feel like “Hey, I can have nice things too.” I’m a tad bitter after the price increase. We could have done great things together.

    I have discovered that my favorite Ali express watches are their more original designs. Other than those I only consider models that are no longer produced by the original manufacturer, or to test a style of watch I’m unsure of.

    Absolutely great news. I’ll be incredibly glad to get rid of the grey market dealers and flippers. Watches should not be seen as an investment. It’s a piece of jewellery simple as. I’ll happily “lose” money on my watches because I buy what I like and don’t buy to sell.

    I think you missed the intent behind "What would you consider a good watch?" I think you're right about any watch from a reputable brand is going to create a good watch. For new collectors, however, I think the question should focus on how to determine an actual quality watch from a reputable brand vs. a watch from a fashion company like MVMT. Those watches are not good. They're made with bad components and cheap movements that are not designed to last. That's how I interpreted the question.

    I agree with a distinction between a tool and a luxury. The Seiko and Citizen dive watches are "beater tool" divers that are great for function but don't hold the prestige of a Sub which may never see a pool, much less open waters. The automatic field watches may not be as accurate as a quartz, so the Timex may be more accurate and cheap, but the automatic Hamilton ensures operational functionality without dying. To me, the Murph is attractive, functional, and still budget friendly. The Ranger is lovely, but to what function? The Ranger is not as prestigious as an Explorer and has no additional value over the Murph. I truly enjoy the value (cost versus function and appearance) of a watch for the intended use.

    There's a problem with the premise. If your looking for an alternative to Rolex you really want a Rolex. There is no alternative. by definition. If you want an accurate, solid, beutiful dive watch with a blue face other than A Rolex for example there are lots. I'm wearing one.

    Well, the average Tudor customer bases their buy-or-wait decision a LOT more on their current cost of living than does a Rolex or Patek customer, so a lot of this is due to inflation chewing up our disposable income. With costs way up for gas, food, mortgage payments & energy costs to heat and cool a home.....its no wonder that near luxury watches are going to get hit worse than the luxury and ultra-luxury spaces.

    This feels like a bit of a skewed tracking bracket... 2021 was the peak high for the watch market, and unprecedented to say the least. Im not certain, but I think if you removed the last couple of years and compared the market now with the market in 2019 (for example) I think we would see much less volatility... not to mention that before covid, watches on the secondary market were rarely worth more than retail. IMO we hit a bubble and it burst. Now were stabilizing and moving back to the way things were for decades prior to the pandemic... just my two cents. Love your videos, keep up the great work!

    • @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
      @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch 6 годин тому

      Thanks for the praise. 😀 It’s a fair question/reflection. The peak itself was may / june 2022. May 2021 was where it kicked off (a little earlier for Rolex though) and I chose to track from jan 21 - about a half a year before the climb started in general. I state in the vid that the difference from start to now is about 6% (2% annual cagr) That’s essentially the same trendline all the way back to 2018 - before that there’s no reliable data. BCG did a report showing a cagr of 7% back to 2012 to 2021. That sounds good but the S&P was at 12 for the same period. I think if I had had a focused on value retention, historical data would be more important, but since my key focus was “investments” I felt the data supported the “don’t invest in watches narrative” Cheers

    How about the Airain type 20 Furtivite? It’s over the $2000 point, at €3250, but if I could, I’d consider it as a completely mechanical flyback watch.

    I buy watches I like. If they are not for sale I buy something else or nothing. I never bought for a higher price from a secondary dealer to get something quicker. This makes no sense to me. Rolex is defiantly ruining their brand by selling primarily to resellers instead of customers who want to wear the watches. But I suppose a gray market dealer is an easier client after all.

    Yikes! You are doing my head in by comparing the 11.59 with a poxy Nomos. Yes, I said and meant poxy. BTW, I love the original 11.59 in gold. and I really don't like the dials on the steel ones. So, I absolutley don't agree with you when you call them an improvement. The white dial is hideous, but most of the other ones are lovely. At least we agree that the case is amazing. As it happens, I have the 3-hander in rose gold, with a blue fume dial, a textile strap and it is gorgeous. Sorry! I also have a blue 15500 which I love infinitely more, but that's fine because it is more beautiful than any watch you could care to mention. Judge the 11.59 on its own merits. The only serious criticism I have is the truly poxy name. And no, I didn't buy the 11.59 to get the 15500 - I bought the 15500 before even ordering the Code 11.59.

    Grew up in the 80s and it was the Miami Vice/Gordon Gecko era - two watch choices the Solid Gold Rolex Datejust on a jubilee or the Cartier two tone Santos. In recent years I looked at both to connect me to my youth. Pleased to say I went with the Large S&G Santos - it is an amazing watch and I kinda feel like an outlier vs being part of the Rolex Club (don't get me wrong Rolex are terrific just not a brand for me)😀

    So, sometimes I like to put out argumentative statements for the purpose of discussion, but not trying to be a troll. Could the Submariner just be an homage to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms? Wasn’t it introduced first?
