Hey guys, here's a demo of the funkier side of the Moog Sub 37 synth. There were a lot of requests to showcase some more old-school, smoother, funk and fusion sounds so I put this together.
I recorded this directly into a Focusrite Saffire Pro40 with no effects/compression or other instruments so you can hear the true sound of the synth.

So worth it---stellar, stellar sounds, extremely playable. Thanks for doing this!
hi do u know if these work with a subsequent 37? not sure how different they are, also when u download them is there anyway to see how you programmed them? I dont want to just blindly use someone elses patches would like to know how you made them too, but interested in purchasing them, thanks
Finally a person who knows how to musically demonstrate a synth. Well done!
Thanks toasteh! I'm going to do a few more videos very soon. What would you like to hear next?
Mike Pensini Just keep this style going and I reckon you'll be sweet regardless of synth!
I agree with the commenter below finally a real Musician who doesn't treat a rather expensive piece of kit like a video game sound effects generator. now these kinds of professional player demos is the ones likely to make me go into substantial debt to get one. my heartfelt thanks sir
Haha, no worries Douglas :)
Finally. Someone knows how to funk on a sub 37.
🤘🏼
Mike every synths you demoed like the se 02 is what should really be demos. Im always super pissed off when i see 98 percent of synth demos online are nerds who cant play keys but instead making synths fart with shitty drone fx sounds or weak lazer bips and glitches and getting wowed by white noises. Not being negative just showing my appreciation thanks again Mike
Thank you Laidback Sounds!
Picturing Stevie Wonder ("Innervisions") and Marvin Gaye ("Trouble Man") using the Moog back in the '70s on their classic albums. Great clip. Always loved the sounds of the Moog.
Aw man, Mike! It's all funky! I watch you whenever I require motivation to practice 😎
Thank you William! Good to hear mate!
finally someome who doesnt just max the resonance and play with the lfo
Thanks! That's exactly what I wanted to do - create a demo that so would want to hear!
Hands down the best moog demo I've seen! Some very classic sounds there! Great chops too.
Thanks Frank :)

I was planning to have the Sub 37 as my first introduction to the world of synthesizers and making funk/R&B/boogie music with it. But I later changed my mind after hearing the demonstrations here on youtube, where the synth sounded like a metal factory.
But this video proved me wrong. Thank you very much and good playing. I hope to see more Sub 37 videos from you.
Farre88 No worries man! That's exactly why I created this video. There are plenty of demos online showcasing the more aggressive side of this synth, but it is still capable of the warm vintage analog tones that so many people love.
Indeed!
3:25 :| amazing playing, amazing progression.
Thanks Daniel!
I agree, I keep replaying that section over and over again.
same
Damn Daniel, back at it again with the Funky Nuclear Powered Sub, OUTSTANDING!!!
Great demo, great playing, showing different sides of the new kid in town. thanx
Thanks Joakim :)
6:35 that's sounds exactly like the solo on whitecap from snarky puppy! Sounds amazing 🔥
Shaun Martin is 🔥!
@@MikePensini got the synth two months ago and looking for fresh ideas, you are the man! Your solos are killing man, keep up the good work
@@SPEEDMANGREECE Thanks man, will do!
I love that Nintendo type of flow at the end. I forgot they used synth for the video games during the 80s & 90s. You make me want to buy a moog!!! Peace
Wonderful demo!!! I can now see my type of vibe on the Moog
Harold Rolle Thanks Harold - that's why I wanted to create this demo - there weren't a lot showcasing the type of sounds I was into.

reminds me a lot of all the snarky puppy sounds :D so amazing sounds - great work
That third bass sound was too nice. Thanks for demonstrating some of the smoother tones. I want one but I ain't got the bread right now.
Jon Elder Thanks Jon, glad you enjoyed it!
😍 those sounds.
Great video, Moog needs to pay you compensation ....after seeing this I'm going to buy the Sub 37. The other Sub 37 videos make it sound horrible. I really thought it sucked but now I know better. Thanks for taking time to do a proper presentation.
austin styles Thanks for your comment Austin - feel free to let them know! All the best mate and look forward to hearing what you come up with!

Great stuff! have been eye'n this synth up. Love that you demo this with a "funk" vibe. Even if this is over 3yrs old. Still great.
Cheers Marlon, it's a great instrument!
Nintendo 64 Sounds Call it a day
Great vid! Thanks for posting, I love hearing variety in how people use the synth :)
Thanks Ronnie!
Rad. Will download as soon as mine arrives! Thanks for posting!

Mike .. you are awesome man, you really get the funk ..your timing and phrasing is very very good
Thank you man!
I’ve bought this pack and it’s great! I was hoping you could release more!? I’ll buy more!!
Thanks man, I just may do that... :)
Great !!!! i did no think that the sub37 can make sound like this !!!!
Thanks onito974 it's a very versatile synth.
Great riffs Mike , keep the videos coming...
Thanks man, will do!
Wow, nice someone who can program AND play! Now that is old school! 😜
Don't tell anyone!
This is refreshing stuff. Thanks.
fnersch Glad you enjoyed it!
I heard "the lick" at 6:52 :) Sweet. Fabulous demo
Well spotted!
Can you please do a video on how you play your synth scales and basslines
I absolutely love your electro synth styles
Great demo.
Thank you.
Tomahawk McBear Thanks man!
Nice playing, Mike!!!
John L Rice Thanks John!
IThank you Mike! great sound m about to get moog 37 too
Enjoy!
Über good demo for this excellent synth!! Most of those funky riffs are killers!
Thank you for NOT doing the average "look at me: I am a prodigy at playing rubbish, soulless keyboard solos just like some prog rock kb player in a band name's who's about dreams and theater"...
+francislalan Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
God I wish I could see your settings and configurations! love these tones!

Good music Mike
Thanks!
thank you kindly !!!
You must like snarky puppy ^^, was searching for another funk jazz demo, instead of the moog cory one, thank youf or making one^^ thinking of buying one from the money i get for my roland juno 60 :). ty!
+StuplosioN No worries man! Glad you enjoyed it.
I only put my hands on the Little Phatty and its offspring a few times. All the same, I can say that the Sub 37 sounds great and must be a fantastic replacement for the LP. If I didn't already have a Moog synthesizer and were on the market now, I would pick this one.
ShreadTheWeapon Yes mate, I'm definitely enjoying it. It's a great board.
Love the Moog.
FABULOUS mooging!!
Thanks Howard!
Funky stuff. You know how to treat a synth right.
👍🤖✋
Nice Mike !!!!
Thanks Edson!
These sub-37 performance demos are fantastic! But I'd like to see band COLLABS (song writer, chord-strings/pad/piano/choir, singer, electric guitarist, percussionist, etc.). Moog can not play magic chords ... and is just a small (albeit excellent) part of the big picture.
Utmost thanks and blessings for sharing these awesome demos.
Very nice!
Thanks DeckardTrinity :)
This bloke plays a mean moog
Thanks for your kind offer, but I've decided to spend a little more and get the Voyager,. Great day to you kind sir!
Bout time someone showcased the funk groove capabilities of the sub 37. Everyone knows what crazy stuff a Moog can do. Just wish more of these types of patches were included in the presets. Yes you can make them yourself (as properly done Mike) but I would rather spend my time tweaking them to my liking. And where the heck is the editor - has it been released yet? I found it very useful when working with the sub phatty. Hats off Mike. Thanks!
Thanks Neil Christensen - that's exactly why I made this video. Stay tuned there are more coming :) As always, feel free to let me know what you'd like to hear and I'll take it onboard. Also, look forward to the Sub37 being featured in some of my upcoming original tracks.
Neil Christensen Hi Neil - just letting you know these patches are now available for download from my website - enjoy!
www.mikepensini.com/new-products-1/vintage-funk-sound-pack-for-moog-sub37
Mike Pensini THANKS!!!!! Is it easy to load onto the sub37 (i use a mac). Or is it pretty self explanatory? Just wondering before I buy these. Huge thumbs up. Keep them coming.
Neil Christensen BTW - I have been using my sub 37 with an Eventide H9 Max. Serious fun there. You should most certainly try it sometime. IMO best pedal out there. Period.
Neil Christensen Hi Neil, yes it's very easy to load into the Sub37 using a Mac (I do too) using a free program called SysEx Librarian. I've included full instructions in the download!
Great Video and Great Sounds Man!
You smooth bastard...
Haha. Smooth as my freshly shaved noggin.
awesome!!!
Thanks Brandon :)
So dam funky!
+Scottie Barnett Thanks man!
I'm trying to get that sound using GarageBand Funk Synths.
YES
Indeed!
Nice job
matias espinosa Thanks Matias :)
Excellent. Fukk distorted sounds.
Hey Mike, I trust that you and yours are having a Merry Christmas. As usual you have put together something funky. But what do you consider your 'sloppiest', down_home, behind the beat video?
Thank you William - Merry Christmas to you too! That's a good question, I'll have a think and get back to you!
Patch at 2:46 reminds me a Jamiroquai song.. :P
Space Cowboy
Great sounds and playing Mike :-) are these patches available ?
Nice playing. Two questions: 1. What is the outtro song starting at 7:07? 2. Do 'all' knobs on this synth transmit midi to external devices? If so, then it would be an awesome controller as well; allowing the user to layer the sounds with other modules.
Hi Darryll Corpening - to answer your questions:
1. That song is an original of mine called "These Things Unseen"
2. Yes. Although I haven't used this function personally, I believe that all knobs can transmit MIDI.
Dang dude, why don't you sell brain downloads, LOL. Would love to play like that. I know Practice, Practice, Practice. Been there on the Sax and flutes but really, really want to learn the Keyboards. I have a Sub37 but so far I'm only scratching the surface. You seemed to have mastered some of it's sounds and capabilities!
The same for Sub phatty and it woulb be just perfect !
If I get my hands on a Sub Phatty I'll create a pack.
Great Mike ! I'm a big fan of you playing and there's not a lot of pack for the Sub Phatty, i think it would be great and lot of succes with your talent...
if i had one of those i could spend hours just fucking around with it.
Great!!!!!!!
Again 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Haha, thanks man!
Hey Mike! First I’m a fan! Those fingers have magic! Have you played with the DSI OB-6? And what are your impressions? I’d love to hear you play some old early 80’s Prince!
Thanks Mark, I have briefly and it’s a lovely machine. Would love to get my hands on one.
pretty awesome ... thank you .
Thanks Leon!
Great video!!! Were you playing in any particular key? If so, which ones? thank you.
Hi Mike!
2min13 you play a Lead... FUNKY Lead! Just love it! Great sound!
How did you set the "MOD WHEEL" ? Is it filter?! Thx
+Alice Trela Hi Alice - at 2:13 that's correct the Mod wheel is controlling the depth of the LFO which is modulating the filter cutoff :)
real cool
ccfunk1 Thanks man!

I don't. but I hope to one day.
i preordered mine in january. where is it! lol. Excited to get it. nice playing!
Thanks weblogik - You'll enjoy it :)
Lets have a bit of history from you about your influences. That's a crazy amount of Funk flowing through your veins.
+LFOVCF Hey mate, influences eh? Wow - that's a long list! Ok, the ones that spring to mind:
Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, George Duke, Jamiroquai, Incognito, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett and heaps more jazz players of all instruments.
Mike Pensini It shows! Good list!
I use my BassStation 2 as a Moog substitute for funk, it's good but not this good! Class playing and sound design man.
and props to pioneer Bernie Worrell
Mike ! Is there any chances that we can download or buy this patches!?
That’s bad as!👍🏼
Nice!!! :-)
Thanks regmonmusic !
Great demo! Can you help me? Whats the best way to connect your sub 37 with Daws? Via Audio Out or USB? Thanks!!
+Paulo Ritter Hi Paulo, if you want to control it via MIDI and record MIDI data to your DAW, connect via USB. You'll need to connect the Audio Out to record the audio though.
What is the best way to get those skills?;) Awesome demonstration!
Haha. I'd say practice and listen :)
Hey man, are these patches you designed yourself or do they come with the synth? Just wondering because I'm not great at synthesis and would want to buy something that comes with great patches like these.
Eli Cherry Hi Eli, I designed most of these patches from scratch.
Eli Cherry Hi Eli - just letting you know these patches are now available to download from my website - enjoy!

hi mike, love the videos, how do i learn the finger techniques, keep crossing my fingers and thumb over.
Just practice Freddie - also practicing scales with proper fingering and technique will help.
Cool! Sounds like Chick and RTF!
liebs1107 Thanks, I'll take that as a compliment!
Hello. Great video really. There is any plugin where I could achive the sound of 2:30?
Have a look at Minimoog emulation plugins
reminds me of Toejam and Earl
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏻🔥🎹
muy loco respetos saludos de peru ¡
Magic Efe Hi there from Sydney!
Hey man awesome playing and chops, that lead sound 6 mins in sounds a lot like Shaun Martin's solo in whitecap by snarky puppy, roughly how did you get that sound?
Hi Levi - Yes, love Shaun's playing on that tune, it was definitely an inspiration for this patch. Square-ish wave and LFO amount assigned to the mod wheel modulating the filter.
Super sound. Mine subsequent 37 coming tomorrow. I am having korg kronos2 , krome and Arturia minibrute. One thing would like to ask curiously how does sub37 sound in overall mix? Can you name some famous song which was I volving sub37?
Thanks in advance.
I really dig the sound of the Sub37 in the mix. Can blend or cut through nicely depending on what's required.
What is this so cool last jazzy song at the end?
If you mean the very last song, that's an original of mine entitled "These Things Unseen". Cheers.
i really spoke about your last song! so great!
can the sub37 do smoothed out voyager type lead sounds? more like 2:47 would be awesome!
Yes, it certainly can.
You gotta show off the paraphonic mode!
Ok Brennan McNally I'll make a Paraphonic-mode demo video next.
Mike Pensini
My man! Looking forward to it.
m looking to get my keyboardist another synth, his sounds very digital and not great for solos. I'm not against digital as long as it can get some nice rich tones. Any recommendations for something around or under 1k, we play all types of funk, he sometimes doubles the bass and sometimes solos. Looking for something that can do anything from talking heads to parliment to bruno mars, chromeo, zapp, etc.
Really nice work with the patches Mike! Would you be willing share your patches in a sysex file?
Joolean Logic Hi Joolean Logic - you're in luck! I'll be making these patches available to purchase in the next few days! Stay tuned!
J.S. Countess Hi JS Countess - These patches are now available for download from my website!
www.mikepensini.com/new-products-1/vintage-funk-sound-pack-for-moog-sub37
sounds great! do you have any string or pad sound packs? looking for softer things I can use in my church, like Hillsong United stuff. lead type sounds, not for chords, I have a keyboard for chords and sustained pads already. the Moog would be for melody lines.
+redpotatofromafrica Hi redpotatofromafrica, I haven't made any string/pad soundpacks for the Moog yet, but will keep that in mind for the future!
+Mike Pensini (Keyboards) thanks! really interested in this. any tips? I love the funk sounds! listening to the Click right now!
Hey Mike, Like what you're doing with the Sub 37 (and Arp!). These patches are excellent. I've tried to patch the one at 1:11 but can't quite get this "liquid" filter texture and still have the snappy envelop. Any tips or pointers? (2:15 is gold by the way)
Madame Doduffort Hi there - shoot me a message over on my FaceBook page - happy to give you a few tips.
Cheers Mike, Thanks for taking the time. I've had a bit more of a go at dialing some patches inspired by what you've put together... I've made a couple of short tutorial with sysex download for the less advanced sound craftsmen to get started. I'll hit your FB with it for feedback.
Madame Doduffort Hi Madame Doduffort - Just letting you know that these patches are now available for download from my website for a special introductory price!
www.mikepensini.com/new-products-1/vintage-funk-sound-pack-for-moog-sub37
Oh...
Is it possible to get very smooth, "classic Moog" leads out of it?
Absolutely Tim
Hi Mike, this might be a silly question, but once I buy these patches I can save them onto my Sub 37, I don’t need to use my mac everytime I want to use them right?
Yep, that’s right! Just need a computer to load them initially.
Mike Pensini thanks man
What a sound at 3:25
Claviceps Glad you like it man :)
