  • Do you change the oil on your PWC yourself? It is not really hard to do. All you need it a few tools and you can save a lot of money, especially if you ride a lot like I do. Take that extra money and buy more gas for your fun machine or buy some new accessories for it.
    Whether you have a Yamaha, a Sea Doo or a Kawasaki, or whether you call it a Jet Ski, a Waverunner or a PWC, you can easily do this yourself.

    I can tell you enjoy the heck out of your machine. I own a FZR and I also change my own oil. however only use OEM oil and filter. I've looked into aftermarket filters but decided not to chance it on a different manufacturer especially anything with Fram printed on it. You are correct these are high reving machines which is why any type of automotive or even motorcycle oil isn't designed for a high performance supercharged specific marine built engine like the ones built by Yamaha. The other skis use re-purposed engines from other vehicles. Thanks and I continue enjoy your channel!

      Hi Dana and thanks for watching my channel. The oil and filter debate has gone on for so many years. Of course, you can't go wrong with the OEM oil but that does not always mean that its the only oil that will do the job. If so, the owners manual would not indicate that you can use other brands. In many cases, a good quality non-OEM oil proves to be better than the OEM. I think they key is to make sure that you use a good quality oil of the right viscosity. As far as filters go, I agree that the base FRAM filter is not recommended. The higher end ones are adequate.

      @@TheShipsLogg the fram XG series, is a top of the line filter. don't listen to the haters, very good filter. affordable price and easy to get.... as far as oil, get the ULTRA platinum, few bucks more but way better than regular platinum Pennzoil. project farm here on youtube just compared these oils the other day and its amazing #2 oil you can buy. the best is amsoil, but its 4x the price.

    Just about to hit the 10-hour mark on my new 2022 VX cruiser HO, I love this thing. Your Channel has been a huge help to someone being new to the boating/PWC world. Today I just did the rear Visibility spout shut off modification. Will be doing the 10 hr maintenance oil and plug change as recommend by manual and saving money is always a good thing :o) Thank You
    I reside in Michigan so it's a little Brisk this time of year, but I think one more ride will be necessary to test the shut off valve :o)

      @@TheShipsLogg what’s your thought in this. He said when you finish draining the oil you can hold the throttle in while cranking basically just letting it turn over. It’s a safe mode but he claims it will push more oil out from the cylinders?

    yamaha recommend yamalube mineral oil, the supercharger clutches don't like synthetic oil.

      It's not unusual for a vendor to recommend their own oil. There are so many people that have been using synthetic oil for years with no issues. I think it is more important to make sure that you use a good quality oil that meets the specs set by the manufacturer.

    Good video. Once first initial drain is complete, always a good idea to hold throttle open, crank engine 2/3 seconds, then suck again. You will find quite a bit more oil is still in there

      I have heard of that method before and I believe it works. Personally, I am not a fan of cranking the engine with no oil.

    Hey Capt Frank! Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family. In 6 years of ownership, I have not changed the oil in the Sea Doo myself. You are right, the dealer charges $250 to do it. I don't know if the Sea Doo is the same set up, I've heard several times about O rings. Your Yamaha oil change is no different than a car. I'll have to take a look. I'd much rather do it myself and save the money and not have to leave the ski at the dealer a couple weeks waiting for them to do it. I'm thinking in summer 2021 I've got to bring my ski to Atlanta.

      WEEKS! My local dealer is a Harley Davidson / Powersports dealer - they turn around in anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days depending…. Your dealer is off their rocker.

    Well.. first of all.. you start it right but!... went wrong all alone. First thing you were right. Warm the engine so oil flows faster out. Second step is.. replace the oil filter(first).. by the way Fram is probably one of the worst oil filters in the market today. You can check other oil filter comparisons here on the tube. I would never use that brand unless is necessary. Lastly the oil choice on this skis is critical since the supercharger clutch also uses this oil as a lubricant. You if I were you I would not use Pennzoil synthetic since it will not really harm your engine but it will definitely wear your supercharger clutch prematurely. On Yamaha Jetski stick to Yamalube or the factory oil fill if you want that supercharger clutch to last. Well this is my opinion amd is based on facts amd personal experience as a mechanic and owner or two Yamaha wave runners. One a 2017 GP 1800 and my loved one 2021 FX Limited.. I hope this saves a lot of people some trouble down the road and thanks to this gentleman to try to help people do their own oil change. Ps. My filter favorite brand is K&N or Wix..

      The ole oil and filter debate! Boy, I have been a party to many of these in the past. Mostly, I choose to read all of the comments rather than jump in. One thing I have learned is that everyone has their brand that they think is best and their brand that they feel is worst and you can discuss til you are blue on the face and you wont change their mind.       @@TheShipsLogg I agree... let me know how long before you feel that supercharger clutch is no longer working😜. Pennzoil is an oil designed for automobiles not marine application. Hence the 4W in the bottle of Yamaha motor oil. The levels of anti foaming agent on marine applications are almost doubled than on automobile oil. Different additives and in different levels are also combined here since this machines run at over 7000rpm for extended periods of time. A more robust oil is required on PWC than on a car that also is the reason why they too recommended oil changes at 50-100 hours intervals vs an automobile. I mean like you said I can go blue discussing this topic. But definitely Pennzoil isn’t the oil to put into this engines. If you like synthetics then go with Motul 10w40 Power Jet is also designed for wave runners. Check it out.

      @@TheShipsLogg I used Fram oil filters and Mobil-1 5w-30 in my former 2006 F-150 with the 5.4L for 13 years…. Engine was as quiet as a whisper when I traded it for my 2018 5.0 F-150💁🏽‍♂️ I agree on the oil filter debate… all opinions but I can add some personal positive experience with the Fram.

    1 tip to save your forearm from getting burned by exhaust header---after pumping oil, put dipstick in . allow to completely cool then remove oil filter saves getting burned- rushing never works.

    One additional question, what would you recommend for the order of a Full Winterizing Process (Minus the Spark Plug Change, that's part of my 10-hr. service).
    Oil change, Engine Winterizing w/marine anti-freeze, Spark Plug Change, fogging of internal engine, Spray outside motor with water displacement, Stabilize Fuel system, Remove Battery and Place on Battery Maintainer and Trickle Charger, Store for the Season.
    This was kind of the order I was thinking on.

      I would probably stabilize the fuel first or second. After I put the stabilizer in, I run the engine for a couple of minutes to get the stabilized fuel all the way into the system. You obviously want to do this before fogging. The rest looks good. 👍🏾

      Thanks. I know that you are going to love your new toy, especially with all of the great water you have up there in Rhode Island. I do the typical wash and wax whenever it is dirty. Between washings, I sometime use a detailer spray which puts a nice shine on it!

    I have another question ,i hear that there is a grease fitting on the mid shaft right behind the motor under the black cover. Do you grease this i have heard one pump per year? I cannot find a video also on this.

      Yes, there is one and it is somewhat of a pain to get to. If I find an easy way, I'll see if I can make a video.

    I am thoroughly enjoying your videos while I am waiting for delivery of a 2021 FX Cruiser HO. I was happy to hear that you are pleased with your machine and can't wait for mine to get here. I have one question about your oil change procedure. In one video the owner stressed that oil removal must be performed in two locations, one from the dipstick hole and one from an oil line that feeds the other side of the engine. He explained that because Yamaha uses a dry sump system all of the oil is not stored in one location. He went on further to say that when adding the new oil, that it was important to add half of the oil through the dipstick and the other half through the oil supply hose. His machine was a 2018 with the four cylinder engine. Your thoughts on this? Is the 2021 engine different? Did the oil you removed approach the capacity listed in the manual? Thanks for the great videos and I look forward to following your adventures. John in Eagle River, WI

      I am not only pleased with it but I am ecstatic!! As far as the oil change is concerned, I only removed oil by sucking it up the dipstick tube and I only added it back via the oil fill. When I took delivery of it several months ago, I spent some time with one of the mechanics at the dealer and he said that it will always be hard to get every drop out when you do the oil change. I have done two changes on my ski so far and each time, I was able to remove between 4 and 4.5 quarts (not including the small amount that was in the filter) so I think my pump is doing a pretty good job. My ski has the 1.8 liter supercharged engine and I think Yamaha has been using them for a few years now. I have never heard of the requirement to refill half of the oil via the dipstick. It may be similar to how many people fill the new oil filter up before putting it back on. It helps get the new oil flowing to the internal engine parts that much quicker.

I'm ordering the extraction kit you use since it looks to be better than others I've seen.       Here is a list of filters that should fit a Yamaha with the 1.8 litre engine.
      Fram 3614
      Purolator L10241
      K&N HP 1002
      Bosch p2044
      Mobil 1 M1-102 or 102A
      Wix 51348.
      I have used both Fram and K&N.

      A lot of people will only use OEM and that is fine. They key is to make sure the oil is the right viscosity and of good quality. If OEM was a requirement to maintain the warranty then I surely would have done it but even the manufacturer knows that it is not required.

    I'm in the process of buying a jetski same model of your but 2022. I'm a 58 year old young man. I love to explore nature. I don't have any intention of running my ski to extreme speed. I have a question for you for how long can you run your ski at normal speed? Like I said before I love to explore nature and a ski is a good machine for that. Thanks

      When you say how long, I assume that you are referring to how long on a single tank of fuel. That does somewhat depend on water conditions as well but at a conservative speed of say 35 mph, you can easily go for over two hours. Maybe even three if the conditions are nice and smooth. That will get you in the 100 miles or more per tank range.

    Great video! , only one problem im not sure how you got almost 4 quarts oil out on a warm engine unless you skipped the part where you waited 20-30 min after warm up, i been doing oil changes for my last 3 FXs with the engine cold. This time someone told me to try to warm the engine to see if the oil would suction out faster but somehow I only got 3 quarts out of it , which is not nearly enough, now i gotta get 3 more quarts and redo it 😂, love your videos though!

      Thanks for the kind words. There was a few minutes between warming the oil and pumping it because I was messing with the camera. Im pretty sure that it was not 30 min though. So far, the amount has been somewhat inconsistent though. After 3 oil changes, I have found that it is usually between 3.5 and 4 quarts.

    Thanks for the video, very helpful. You mentioned that the ski needs to be level. On another video the guy put a level on the engine block to level it... is that needed and/or recommended?

    So what would cause the water to NOT come out of the sides?

      If you are running the ski out of the water with a hose attached, it may simply mean that the water pressure from the hose is not high enough. If there is no water coming from the sides while the ski is in the water, something is clogged or a hose has come loose

    Drill with oil extractor attachment boom shaka laka. I do it myself. Change sparks myself. Even have a laptop with plug to read the onboard computer. One thing I noticed is you didn't use the other tube to put the extractor down? On the TR1 motor (VX and limited, etc) there is a second hose you suck out of that gives you another half to 1 quart of oil. I have to do both to get it all out.

      That's awesome! Where did you get the plug to read the onboard computer and how much was it? I think I would like to get one as well. I don't think that you have to use a second hose on the 1.8 motors and it does appear that I got most of the oil out.

      @@TheShipsLogg Well, the YDS yamaha software you get on ebay for $50-100 bucks, and the cable. It's a USB. Waverunners don't have a dedicated port, but you have to know what cable and it differs from year to year. Windows laptop with either 32/64 bit win10. Basically reads codes, mixture, etc. Some people can hook up tuners to their gp1800 models (not sure on lower models, I have vx limited so no idea). The other option is like a 'scan sea' which is expensive as hell, but I haven't looked much into that...

      @@TheShipsLogg there are alot of options, some cheap, some expensive no doubt. I'd start on the cheap route. I only had to look into it because a new ski was rough idling and turning off randomly. I got the codes and it was running rich (more fuel than needed) so had to have it tuned. Sometimes the check valve or solenoid cause that issue too. Skis can be a mystery sometimes!

      @@TheShipsLogg Most aren't going to need it. Waverunners generally are so damn tight in terms of reliability, I just had an issue with rough idle/turning off and bogging. Such a rare issue for the tr1 motors (you got that sweet SVHO but I don't admire your gas bill!!!!) I had to get the read out codes on fuel mix and other things....

      I put a link for the extractor in the description below. I am very happy with it. I have had it for about four years now and use it primarily for oil changes on my boat and now the Waverunner as well.

      Mine has an oil fill on the top. Of course, every ski is different.

      I do not dislike Yama oil. It is a good oil but just because it is Yama does not make it better than everything else. I usually stick with what has proven itself with me and that is either Mobil 1 or Penz Platinum.

    Hi - just joined, like your vids, seem like a great guy, selling that 69, 70 tk in the grage ?used a good oil - pennzoil prem synthetic - NO fram filters although you used the better fram. wix, napa gold (same filter as wix) or mobil one filter.
    all of us are nuts and that oil in reality is like brand new coming out of there if you tested it. 10 hrs, syn is easily good for 10000 in a car - already proven.

      Thanks so much. I have gotten a few comments on the Fram filter. I would never use the base Fram because they are just not well designed or put together but the upper level ones are not to bad. I agree that the Mobil 1 filter is a better one but I just could not find one available. As far as oil is concerned Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum are consistently ranked at the top which is why I always use them. Sadly, I probably will sell the truck. I just don't have time to do a restore on it. I need to let someone else take it and treat it right. Thanks for watching my videos!

      I just may give that a try. Oil should be changed after the first 10 hours of break in and then every 50 hours after that. Many folks change plugs every season but it depends on your riding habits. If you ride a lot , you may need to do it more often.

      I rinse it off after each ride, especially if I ride in salt water. A good wax a few times a year is also very helpful. Between waxes, I also hit it with detail spray after each use to keep the shine fresh.

      @@TheShipsLogg to add to that..if you ride in fresh water(lakes)..rinse with some vinegar water, that will take hard water spots away nice..then a nice spray ceramic coating..only takes 10 mins..nice vid !

    is it okay to use the regular motor oil? The manual states to use 4W oil or 10W-30/40 (API: SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ) but most oils sold do not have those ratings. Everywhere I go they have at SN or better.

      You definitely want to use the grades that your manual suggests but it does not have to be Yamaha Oil. Even though synthetic oil is not required, that is all I use. Just better oil.

      HIJK LMN - letters are added as oil is made better thus sn is better than all that oil listed, you wouldn't go backwards, i doubt if you could find older oil.

      Not at all. It is a good idea to keep receipts of your oil a filter purchases if it ever comes into question. As usual, I definitely recommend following the owners manual on viscosity recommendations and using a high quality synthetic oil as well.

      @@TheShipsLogg haha - Could you do a video about spark plugs and fuel lines? I'm thinking of getting just a FX Cruiser HO next summer maybe, not the SVHO version - but a bit paranoid about having the ski blow up due to a fuel problem. Don't exactly want to be airborne :) Ventillation of seat covers with fueling etc, yes - but an overview video of fuel line maintaince would be great. You explain it well. Cheers

      Oh you are definitely right. In fact, I think I mentioned in the video that it is difficult to get it all out. My second oil change resulted in my getting 4.5 quarts out so I did a bit better that time.
