    The Mithril story has a structure that can proceed from both angles, real or false. The biggest question that remains in my mind is how did Halbrand (Sauron) end up on the raft? What happened in the process leading up to there?

    17:43 i'm still holding on to my theory that sauron was trying to get to numenor for whatever reason (maybe mithril specifically) and the sea creature we saw just wasn't having it 😅 pair the monster with that giant storm and the lightning strike and we might have a case of valar intervention there; both ulmo and manwe trying to prevent sauron from reaching numenor.
    i practically dislocated my shoulder with that reach but until the show tells me i'm wrong... 🤷🏻‍♀️😄

      and what if the lesser rings have already been forged? which we'll see in the flashbacks? and they're all chilling in halbrand's little pouch and just awaiting corruption of & distribution to their respective bearers??? i need august to hurry up, i wasn't even aware how hyped i am for the second season

    Even if the "mythril" origin story is not supposed to be 100% literally true within the story, the shard of mithril did heal the blighted leaf when they were near each other in Episode 7. There might be another explanation for that, but I have a feeling that the mithril in the show really does shine with the Light of the Trees somehow. In media interviews, the showrunners have often talked about that being part of their notion of a Grand Unifying Theory.

    • @anni.68
      @anni.68 Місяць тому +3

      The Balrog sleeps surrounded by Mithril, but it does not seem to bother him. But a small leaf that was supposedly healed by Mithril woke him up. Why? Maybe it was not the Mithril itself, that healed the leaf and upset the Balrog, but the power of the friendship between Elrond and Durin that is somehow stored in the piece of Mithril, a token of their friendship. Otherwise, if Mithril itself really shone with the light of the Two Trees, the Balrog would not stay in the mines. He would hate them.

    • @mliem
      @mliem Місяць тому

      @@anni.68 good question. I love the idea that friendship could be a literal healing force, just as Elrond said, "where there is love, it is never truly dark".
      We know Durin's Bane is not supposed to wreak destruction upon Khazad-dum that early in the timeline of Arda. However, in the show we see it wake up and roar, which might be hint that it is not entirely surrounded by mithril. I would guess that it will emerge sometime in S2, but will somehow be defeated, perhaps by joint effort of Dwarves and Elves, causing it to be encapsulated within mithril to contain it for another several millennia. In the Third Age, the dwarves would delve too greedily and too deep. In doing so, they might inadvertently breach the mithril cage, allowing it to escape and bring down the whole realm in T.A. 1980.

    I think the answer to the missing Celibrimbor mystery is fairly straightforward. Unless i'm mistaken, in the books and their lore, he was at one point captured and tortured by Sauron. That's almost certainly where he currently is as far as the Rings of Power canon goes. The name drop with Theo makes it clear that he's likely out there in one of Sauron's dungeons.

      @@maldahar As a "real fan" of Tolkien's work, I don't feel insulted or alienated by this work. In fact, I think it's quite good. I also would disagree with the notion this was "aimed at "modern audiences" ". There's so many deep cuts and references, and so many things the show expects you to know, that it seems more aimed to appeal to "Tolkien fans", as it were. The pacing, as an example, is much more in the spirit of Tolkien's writing, and so is the way they frame many of their shots throughout the show. It's truly unfortunate so many don't see how good this show is, but still, I highly recommend giving the show another shot with a different frame of mind.

      @@JKKoneofakind There are so many issues with it I don’t even know where to start. Numenorians were a force to reckon with, they didn’t need Galadriel to show them how to use the sword. She wasn’t even there at the time. And they were not racist against elves or worried that they will “take their jobs”. Middle earth is not Texas. When Numenorians stormed Saurons gates he just gave up and handed his ass over to them. That is why he is later on so afraid of Aragorn. And don’t even get me started on those evil, psychopaths the Hartfoots - nobody gets left behind unless they are a bit slow or sprained their ankle a bit? Gandalf was also not there. Even if you can get past the obvious race pandering when you see a black man amongst obviously isolated group of haflings and you don’t know where he came from (because you know how genetics work) you can’t get over this obnoxious Galadriel who is so powerful that she can withstand a full on vulcano eruption blast. So many issues here. Bezos is laundering money by trying to destroy a story about friendship, love and heroism and true fans are speaking out against it. If you like that abomination by all means continue watching but I would recommend brushing up on Silmarilion and the Appendices first.

    I am so fed up with people thinking the harfoot's are cutthroat. You live in a community that lives off the land and what it produces and moves around in tune with the seasons. If part of your community gets sick or is near death it brings danger if you hang around to the change of the next season you risk the community. This is a community that does not have any fighting skills and is traveling with children who live in the open. We have the joys of the hobbits in the Shire because, for the most part, they are stationary. Eating drinking and smoking pipe weed in a safe environment.

    The show has some interesting characters. Disa was very dwarvish, Nori very hobbitish, Elendil and Isildur were okay, Miriel and Pharazon and Palantir were largely okay, i think Annatar was okay. I really disliked Galadriel, she was bossy and feanorian in character, Durin was good. The Istar was strange, i liked the three witches. I disliked many of the Harfoots, they were petty and mean. Adar was pretty good.
    All in all the story of season 1 wasn't very good. Too many logical mistakes and unbelievable turning points. I didn't really enjoy the show. Arondir was okay but Bronwyn was boring. I wasn'thappy with Elrond being so dishonest, Theo was very unlikeable, Earien and Kemen were pretty uninteresting, Celebrimbor i was very unsatisfied with as well.
    Overall there was too much bad writi g and storytelling. It was a frustrating show to watch, some nice ideas but for the most part badly executed.

    I was so disappointed by the ugly elves. And how can Númenóreans who are a separate race from normal humans. Some how be both Asian Indian black and white😂 same with elves they aren’t the same race as humans so they both shouldn’t evolve that same way. Because they don’t live in environments that force them to evolve In distinct ways. I get the south landers, because they where the easterlings that joined morgoth. So it make sense for them to be that geographically speaking. And Tolkien said that half foots are darker of skin

    • @mliem
      @mliem Місяць тому +2

      When I think of ugly elves, I think of the notorious design of the Woodelves of Mirkwood in the Rankin & Bass cartoon movie for tv in late 1970s. The elves in the Amazon show that I saw were fine, fine looking, to say the least, to me and to other fans of the show I know.
      I am guessing that the show was interpreting the Numenoreans as diversely ranging in skin tones due to their origins from the beginning of the Years of the Sun, long before the island kingdom was founded.

      „First, it needs to be stated that there were certainly many different races (in the artificial sense of skin color) in Middle-earth, just as there are in our earth: Caucasian, Asian and African at least (Western, Eastern and Southern Middle-earth respectively). That’s not at all in doubt. Since Elves awoke earlier than men, and so had more time to migrate about Middle-earth as a whole, it stands to reason that some Elves that chose not to migrate West might have moved East or South and so there could well be darker complexted Elves … Tolkien doesn’t describe any such migration or any such Elves, but it is possible“ (Carl Hostetter)

    • @anni.68
      @anni.68 Місяць тому +3

      @@Razzlion Hardly comparable. We know much, much more about Tolkien's beliefs in natural science and evolutionary biology than we know about the seize of Dwarves.
      Tolkien e.g. extended his own timeline from 1 Valian Year = 10 sun years to 1 Valian Year = 144 years to give Elves and Men more time for a natural evolution and sundering. He wrote about the new - 14 times !! longer - timeline that it was now "adequate if not scientifically long enough". Which means that he was aware that the new timeline was still too short, but that it was all he could do to make it more realistic and to adapt it to the scientific knowledge of his time about evolutionary biology (J.R.R. Tolkien, ed. Carl Hostetter, The Nature of Middle-earth, "The Awakening of the Quendi").
      For the same reason Tolkien changed the myth about the creation of the sun. He decided that the sun was not created thousands of years after the awakening of the Elves, but that it existed from the beginning of time. Which is important, because sunlight is the reason - and the only reason - for the development of different skin colours. Christopher Tolkien wrote that in his late years his father considered the old sun myth as too scientifically primitive. Tolkien wrote: "You cannot do this anymore". (J.R.R. Tolkien, Morgoth's Ring, Chapter "Myths transformed").
      Apart from that we know that 1/3 of all the Elves did not join the Great March from Asia into the West. Nobody knows what happened to them and where they went. We know that Men migrated from Asia over all of Middle-earth, including Africa and that they developed different skin colours according to the different amounts of UV radiation. And the Elves did not, because...? Why should we believe that Elves - of all people - were less adventurous, less brave and less interested in exploring the world than Men?
      As Hostetter said, we do not know if some of the Avari migrated South, but we _do_ know that Tolkien believed in natural science and in evolutionary biology and that he made some serious efforts to bring his world-building in line with history, geography and natural science.
      As I said, not comparable with our knowledge about the seizes of Dwarves.

      The elves aren't Asian, black or white. They are just elves. They are being acted by real human actors who not only will not, but can not ever be a Tolkien elf since such a thing is fictional. It's called dramatization for a reason.
