Chapter Eighteen: Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin
The Dagor Bragollach: The Battle of Sudden Flame
455 years after the coming of Fingolfin began the 4th of the great battles: the Dagor Bragollach, the Battle of Sudden Flame.
During this battle came Glaurung the Golden, Father of Dragons, in his full might. Balrogs and the armies of Orcs came behind them. Most of the Grey-elves fled and forsook the northern war.
The sons of Finarfin were most hurt because they lived directly south of Ard-galen. Angrod and Aegnor were slain. Finrod was cut off from his people and would’ve been slain, but Barahir rescued him and was able to return to Nargothrond. He swore an oath to Barahir and his people and gave him his ring.
Fingolfin and Fingon were driven back to the fortresses of Ered Wethrin. Hador the Golden-haired died defending Fingolfin; his son Gundor died with him.
Hithlum remained unconquered for the time being, but Fingolfin was cut off from his kinsmen. Celegorm and Curufin were overcome and fled to Nargothrond. Maedhros and his people fought valiantly but could not stand against Glaurung, and everyone fled. The Orcs did not come into Ossiriand.
Fingolfin rode to Angband’s gates to challenge Morgoth in battle. Fingolfin had called him craven and lord of slaves for all of his servants to hear, so Morgoth felt forced to answer the challenge. Fingolfin fought against Morgoth valiantly but became weary and was crushed under Morgoth’s shield. Morgoth pressed his foot against Fingolfin’s neck, but Fingolfin stabbed Morgoth in the foot in one last desperate stroke. Thus, Fingolfin died.
Morgoth broke the body of Fingolfin and planned to feed it to the wolves, but Thorondor (Lord of Eagles) came and scratched Morgoth’s face and took the body of Fingolfin, carrying it to Gondolin where Turgon buried him. Morgoth was permanently wounded in his foot due to Fingolfin and in his face by Thorondor.
Now Morgoth had dominion over the North and pursued the people of Barahir until one by one, only a few of them remained. They became so desperate that they sent their women and children away to Brethil to safety. Most of these men were not seen again for they were killed one by one until only 12 remained with Barahir: Beren his son, Baragund, Belegund, and nine of their servants: Radhruin, Dairuin, Dagnir, Ragnor, Gildor, Gorlim, Arthad, Urthel, and Hathaldir. These men were “outlaws without hope”, hunted like beasts, wandering in the forest homeless.
For two years after the Dagor Bragollach, the Noldor fought to defend the western pass, and Minas Tirith withstood against the Orcs. But after the fall of Fingolfin, Sauron, greatest of the servants of Morgoth, took Minas Tirith and made it a watchtower for Morgoth. The fair isle of Tol Sirion became called Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves.
The Swarthy Men
In this time, the Swarthy Men came into Beleriand. Some of them had already secretly come under the service of Morgoth, but not all. Maedhros made an alliance with them and was friends with their chieftains, Bór and Ulfang.
The sons of Bór were Borlad, Borlach, and Borthand, and they followed Maedhros and Maglor faithfully. The sons of Ulfang were Ulfast, Ulwarth, and Uldor, and they followed Caranthir but “proved faithless.”
Húrin and Huor, the sons of Galdor in Dor-lómin, lived with the Haladin. When they were young (Huor was only 13), they went into battle but were cut off from their company and became lost in Dimbar.
They would’ve died, but Thorondor carried them to Gondolin. Turgon allowed them to live in Gondolin, but they eventually wished to return home. This was usually forbidden, but because they had been carried in by Thorondor, Turgon allowed them to depart in the manner in which they arrived.
Maeglin doubted this decision, but the boys swore an oath to never reveal anything about Gondolin. Then the eagles carried them back to Dor-lómin.
Turgon perceived that the end of the Noldor was coming soon, so he sent some of the Gondolindrim to the Isle of Balar to build ships and sail West in order to ask for pardon and help from the Valar. However, they were unsuccessful, and no help came.
Morgoth sent forth more spies to gather information about Nargothrond and Gondolin.
After a few years, Morgoth assailed Hithlum. Galdor was killed. Húrin drove the Orcs away.
Fingon was outnumbered as he fought against the Orcs, but Círdan came with his ships up the Firth of Drengist, and they were victorious.
After this, Húrin was lord of the house of Hador and served Fingon. His wife was Morwen, daughter of Baragund.

Full breakdown here: www.teawithtolkien.com/rop/205 Episode Five Thoughts: This is definitely the best episode of the season so far, which was much appreciated after episode four. Halfway through this episode I wrote down in my notes: “This episode is so good I’m scared it’s going to end soon.” There were so many little nods to the Silmarillion in this episode that my little nerd heart was so h...

While his name appears only a few times throughout Tolkien’s Legendarium, the elven-smith Celebrimbor is perhaps one of the most important Elven characters in these great tales. The Noldorin smith who forged the Rings of Power under the direction of Sauron in disguise, Celebrimbor is counted second only to Feanor in skill at the forge. But who exactly is Celebrimbor? Whether you know him from t...

Please note that this entry & video includes major spoilers for episode four of season two! There are really three plotlines in this episode: Elvish Journey to Eregion; Rhûn; and Pelargir. No Dwarves or Númenor, so I’m guessing we will return to them in the next episode. I think it’s probably difficult for those who are fans of specific plotlines to have to wait in between episodes, but I do fe...

I liked this episode a lot more than the first, I do feel like we finally got cooking here. I am tired of wandering around in the desert with the Stranger and would like for him to finally arrive at wherever he’s trying to go. Episode One Thoughts: Like with season one, this episode is a slow start to the season. I watched it first on my laptop and felt like it was a solid 7/10, and then I watched it later on my TV and enjoyed it a lot more. I would’ve loved to see this in a theater. In the final neutralization of Sauron according to Adar's "Crown+Three thesis", how can the effect of the Three preventing the Elves from fading (their influence on the dynamics of the fading phenomenon) on Sauron's loss of will to reincarnate be considered metaphysically?

I managed to snag a copy from Amazon's secondhand market ($128 shipped) after having missed the original release. Many of the exterior boxes were damaged, and some were returned. My copy does has a dent on the backside edge, but I can live with it. If you love film/tv scores, the music and this release are not to be missed.

Many thoughts but for now I'll just share this--in story-telling I'm not a fan of adventurequests like the one Bombadil is observing Not-Gandalf pursue. "You have failed all the trials so far,"--well dude I don't even know who I am, I blasted my friends into another Middle-Earth zip code and your riddle game isn't working out well now, is it? That being said, like you, I expect the Stranger to choose Nori instead of essentially grasping for power, even though Tom paints the latter as a worthy and even noble path. But yes it's a trick question. Despite my general tone above I really enjoyed this episode. Galadriel/Adar, Sauron/Celebrimbor, most of the Dwarf segments, and Elendil/Miriel, all high points. And the all-too-brief Arondir. Thanks so much for this video!

I always viewed it as separate and a sort of modernist fanfiction to Lord of the Rings, and while I should instinctively hate alot of the show's qualities it asks interesting questions in its own right that predate its otherwise surface level wokeness, that while annoying, is braindead to focus on and get outraged over. The show comes close to executing well and the actors do their job but the writing doesn't take itself seriously enough or try to rise to a high level. The dialogue is always too self aware and self limiting.

That was the best episode of the season so far, they really put Sauron center-stage. I questioned many choices they made, but Sauron manipulating Celebrimbor and everybody around him is real fun. Series shows him in a way that it's getting hard not to root for him, he is playing 4D chess while everybody is playing checkers. I would prefer them stopping referencing LotR movies: like with Arondir running after Adar's army in a way like Legolas did with Gimli and Aragorn after Uruk-hai, although Arondir's fight with Orcs was perhaps the best fight scene this season (Ismael Cordova seems to be better trained than Morfydd Clark); or referencing Gandalf's dialogues in the scenes between Tom Bombadil and the Stranger. Even Harfoot scenes in the previous episodes are eerily similar to Nazgûl in the Shire (masked raiders are clearly made to resemble them). Also, Luke Skywalker/Yoda scene between Bombadil and Stranger totally broke immersion for me. The series really shines when does original stuff, like interactions between Sauron and Celebrimbor, or Durin and his father, not when it is copying others.

Love your work, Tea 3:09 I hated this line too... only part of the episode that bothered me. Love your Dark Rizzard slip :D 17:37 He knows she's really Celebrian. He's enjoying messing with Galadriels secret hidden daughter. 20:00 This is an illusion state. The 'mithril' is probably Sauron's blood from when he sliced his hand. 21:07 The episode is called Where is he?. Here he says "Here I am!" 21:18 That line hit hard for me. The line is starting to pay off from S1. In S1 it felt cheesy because it wasnt connected to much. In S2, it is intrinsic to Elendil's faith and the Faithful's fight back against the Kingsmen. The most moving part of this episode was Durin not wanting to lose his father and having to come to terms with that his father is already gone.

Sauron posing at the end with his hands stretched out reminded me of an conductor overlooking the conclusion of his symphony (as one of the Ainu he must know a thing or two about magic). Nice video again, thanks! When they say, "The sea is always right," I didn't really get it. It's only this episode & the trial via the Valar of the Sea that made me think that when they refer to the sea, they're actually referring to the Valar & the Maiar themselves! It's the faithful that always say the sea is always right, so I believe they are referring to God of Sea Ulmo, along with his Maiar Ossë & Uinen! I think it makes a lot more sense looking at it that way. Thanks again for your analysis! ☕️☕️

Best episode of the whole series for me so far, and that is saying something since I am the one person who loves the harfoot storyline maybe the most (I know I am a unicorn) and they weren't there at all. Also the way Sauron brought up Galadriel's hair while touching another woman's was definitely creepy, and yet, I loved it. He is still on Galadriel's mind, and she hates it. She is still on his mind, and it's making him a bit unhinged. I can't wait to see what happens when they meet again.

A rambling, incoherent, terrible episode. Until now the dwarves have been the only 'faction' of the show that I've been happy with, but the nonsense regarding the ring and knowing where to mine was so badly done. Apart from the badly miscast elves the visuals of the show continue to be the high point, I think going forward I'll watch the show with the volume turned to zero and simply imagine my own dialogue and storyline, because what we're getting from the writing room is absolutely sub-par.

  • @eryniel95

This episode is absolutely the best this season (personally I thought ep3 was the weakest). The Silmarilion references? Omg! About Annatar charming Mirdania, 1.) what a way for him to paint Celebrimbor as the one who needs “healing”, and 2.) it was creepy as heck the way he stroked her hair (especially as i still believe “Mirdania” is an alias of Celebrian, hence why she blushed when he compared her to Galadriel). And seriously, love they don´t present Celabrimbor as utterly stupid, he does push back on Annatar, he does have enough integrety to not follow his every word blindly, only… its Sauron he has to deal with, so… The Numenor plot thickens! Really began to dislike Kemen this season, but then he smashes Nienna´s relic (loved we saw her) and kills my man Valendil?

One of the best episodes of the season. The plots feel urgent and essential, there's a growing sense of dread and tragedy closing in around these characters as Annatar's shadow descends upon Middle Earth.......the way Disa discovers the hidden depth is a little silly, and I still wish Nûmenor got a little more attention to breathe before this. But otherwise, brilliant. The Annatar/Celebrimbor storyline is becoming PEAK! Great review

My two braincells just connected, and I realized that Celebrimbor will be gone from Rings of Power in just 4 episodes. I am not ready for that...

The series seems to me to combine both versions of Celebrimbor. It gives the impression of a character journey that he left Nargothrond before the fall of this city and went to Gondolin, and after that fell, he came to the deltas of Sirion with the Noldor exiles. As mentioned in the series, it is understood that Elrond's interaction with his father Eärendil is also thanks to this.

In series he is granny Celebrimbor. Bad acting, his knowledge is bad in series, he doesn't even know that he could combine metals. It's disgrace.
