You are a life saver. It was just luck finding this video and it saved me hours and who knows how much money. After changing the flapper I was trying to find a video on how to change the seal. I don't know what I would have changed next. But yes, the tube was below the water line. Thank you. You are my hero.
You, sir, are a genius! Like you I had replaced everything associated with the flapper and tank seal to no avail. When I first watched your tutorial I though to myself, "no way, it can't be this easy." Well, it was! I never would have suspected that the flush valve fill tube could cause a siphon if it was inserted lower than the tank fill level. Thank you very much for making a believer out of me!
You are a life saver. You have found a horrible design problem and whoever failed to account for siphoning when designing these newfangled fill valves should have their necks wrung. That's what's happening. If the end of that tube is below the water line, there's negative pressure created on the back side of that valve which for some reason siphons out the tank water. Horrible. You saved me many worries. Before I cut the tube, I pulled it up above the water line, noticed the end of it was wet, propped it above the water, and joyfully watched the trickle into the bowl come to a victorious stop. What a horrible design problem.
Guess what! It worked. I came across your video a few minutes after emailing a plumber. I pulled out the tube and waited for the ghost but it had disappeared. Since replacing the cover would have pushed it back in, I clipped it, flushed and the rest is history. Awesome.
I've been doing home repairs for 50 years including toilet repairs. Just recently experienced this same problem and also replaced all the parts. This trick did the "trick" !! Thanks.
I've been dealing with this issue for YEARS. Replaced all the same components you did and nothing solved it. Decided one try UA-cam one last time and ended up on your video. Within 2 minutes, my phone problem is now permanently solved. The only tool required for this job is scissors. Absolutely unbelievable. Thank you SO MUCH and God bless you.
We have a 2-3 year old toilet, I replaced the fill valve because we had a noisy one and I truly believe it was bad. After installing the new one, we had the noise of the fill valve “filling with water” about every 4-5 minutes. I was out of ideas, thought of calling a plumber as well. I stumbled upon this video and WOAH!!!! You are a huge blessing. Thank you so much for sharing!!! After watching this video I opened the toilet tank and saw the water running. I pulled the long hose out of the pipe until it was above the water level and low and behold, it has not done that noise again! Thank you so much!
Thank you for this helpful tip. I had a toilet leaking that would run every 15 minutes. I changed the flapper 3 times, the tank gasket once and it kept leaking. It was driving me crazy. Came to UA-cam to look for advice and saw your video. Tried it and no longer leaks. Thanks again, this saved my money and my sanity.
I can't thank you enough!! I tried everything from changing out all the parts, to numerous tank flappers!! This was the first video I came to and Walla it freaking worked!! THANK YOU!!
Hi Jake: It's been nearly 15 hours since I followed exactly the procedures you discussed in your video, and it appears that the ghost flush has stopped. Thanks so much for sharing.
Can’t thank you enough!! I kept adjusting the tube, but it still started phantom flushing again! Explaining the need for the tube to be higher than the water line really clicked for me! I’ve watched/read several informational sources, but this did the trick. I’ve never felt so happy to not hear the stupid toilet talk back after I kept trying to sit down to relax.
Add another satisfied viewer to your list. I was having the same problem after installing a new fill valve. Just about to spend more of my hard earned money and found this video. Excellent fix, thank you very much.
This is life saver for me. I also tried everything what I could have done without any luck and then I found this video. I followed the instructions, and it indeed fixed my problem. Thank you.
You're a Star... Been doing battle with my cistern on and off for about 3 hours having lived with this issue for about 6 months and so happy to have sorted it. Can't believe it was such an easy fix! Thanks a million :-)
Changed out the flapper...still running and running me up the wall. Was about to call a Plummer (costly) Tried your solution...Praise the Lord!!! It worked! Thank you!
Life saver! I suggest those who experience the phantom flushing to get a spare refill tube first, then try the method in the video before going through all the hustles to replace the major toilet parts. This can save you a lot of money and TIME!
You are the man! I recently changed the entire inside of the toilet like you mentioned and was worried I would have to do it again. Thanks so much for helping us get this done! Easy fix!
Holy crap!!!!! Two flapper valve seals, whole flush valve and a full valve later…all I had to do was search and your video would have saved me the headaches. I was just about to replace the whole toilet bowl.
Amazing!! I have replaced the flapper twice and was about to replace all the other parts and saw your video. One snip and the problem was fixed. Thank you!
Wow, this worked exclamation! I replaced the toilet valve and the flapper and the problem still persisted. I was about to replace all those of the parts that you replaced as well. I got on UA-cam to see what I can do. Moving my line up above the water fill line instantly fix my problem. Thank you so much.
I was skeptical at first that this would solve my problem The phantom refilling, for me, happens every 5-6 hrs, and sometimes, 8-10 hrs. As with what others did, I checked the flap, and was thinking of replacing the entire toilet until I came across this video. I tried it, and after one day, it seems to work. A 5 second fix that saved me frustration and probably several hundred dollars since I did not have to call a plumber. I'm crossing my fingers that I don't hear the phantom refilling again but THANK YOU.
Jake, You Sir are awesome! My toilet had a slow leak, so when I lifted the tank cover and saw how old the parts were I decided to replace them all. However, unbeknownst to me I inserted the rubber tubing too far into the filler tube and the toilet tank kept refilling every few minutes. I was ready to call a plumber when I found your video. Thank you soooo much!😊
Jake, thank you, thank you, thank you !! We were about ready to buy a new toilet. I had replaced every thing , one by one. Still ghost flushing. After finding your video on my "one last search" our lives were able to get back to normal. Cut about 4" off the tube and problem solved ! Three days in now and still no more flushing.
Had the same problem for a few years! Changed everything brand new 3 times, still with no success!! Did exactly what you said and wow.....no more ghost toilet!!! Thank you!!!!!!
Dude. Who needs captain America. I sat in frustration for an hour. Not a leak in sight and everything hooked up perfectly. Did your little trick here and solved everything. Thanks brother 👌🏾
New house, I've been messing with this one toilet for 9 months now, and you had the simple solution! Thanks so much. I was about ready to take a sledgehammer to it in frustration. lol.
This was my exact problem. The fill tube was lower than the waterline so it was acting like a siphon hose. I would have never thought of this on my own. I was just about to go buy new parts. Thank you for posting this video!
Thanks a lot for the video! I just replaced the flapper and its still happen. Last 2 months, my water bill was very high due to this problem. I am glad I came across your video and it was an easy fix. Thanks again!
Spot on !!! I replaced the flapper and tank would still flush periodically my hose was a little longer so I pushed in down into the over flow tube not realizing I was creating the ghost flush trimmed the hose and made sure hose was only barely put in the top of over flow tube and Wala it seems to have stopped. Thanks for your video.
I did this and it worked for me when everything else failed. Even plumbers that I called did not know this and suggested that I change the whole toilet. Thanks for this tip. PS: I still have not cut the tube in case something happens after 24 hours; I will cut the tube if everything is alright after 24 hours. Thanks again for all your help.
OMG It worked! THANK YOUUUUU!! Had already replaced everything but the flush valve and it was leaking out the whole tank in rapid fashion. Not sure why this works, but it did! My hose went about 5" down the stand pipe and I cut it off so it was short and no more leak!
Wow you are a life saver, this is exactly what was happening with my toilet. I changed the flapper and it was still ghost flushing every few minutes, got so worried there was a leak somewhere and would have to call a plumber... until I started researching and found your video. Pulled the hose back and boom, ghost gone! THANK YOU! 👏😊
Thanks for this video. It solved my problem. I replaced the flapper which was starting to disintegrate, so needed replacing, but didn't fix the problem. Shortened the hose and no more random toilet running.
So this should be a FIRST resort, not a last resort. My toilet has a metal tube, not a flexible one. I repositioned it slightly so it was above the water level, and it worked. No more intermittent flushing. No running to the store for parts. No dollars spent. Just a few seconds for a slight adjustment. Poof. Fixed. Thanks so much for the tip!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! For two years now(and about the same time of the year) my toilet has this issue. Then it mysteriously stops flushing. Just like you I bought a flapper but never used it because the flushing stopped. Now I understand what's happening!!!
Recently replaced a flush valve that sounded like an animal in pain every time it refilled, but it wasn’t ghost flushing. New flush valve caused ghost flushing. Replaced the flapper, still ghost flushing. Look, I have enough things I’m working on fixing around the house, Fix one thing, another thing breaks, a vicious cycle, now I have to try to figure out why my toilet is ghost flushing with a new flush valve and flapper? I DONT NEED THIS AGGREVATION! Your solution fixed the problem. Thanks for saving me some money on therapy LOL.
A BIG Thank You for this video. I kept on trying to fix the slow flow of water from the tank into the bowl by changing flappers, one after another, without success. My toilet model is Eljer (several years old) and I could not get Eljer parts at Home Depot or other stores; so I thought the flappers I bought were not compatible. Until... I saw your video. The fix worked like a charm. Thank you very much.
Depending on your toilet bowl altitude, can cause those needed double manual flushes "sometimes" - the higher the water, the more force is BEHIND it and as Luke always said - "may the force be with you"... So having more H2O to work with, fixes that and your idea of raising the rubber tube above the water lines fixes those periodic all-night-fillups too...
holy crap. Same predicament you were in. Was about to replace flush valve seal twice, was looking at the fill valve but kept searching since that doesnt make sense. You mah man are a lifesaver; i hope you have a great weekend/life since you just saved me a ton a headache
Thank you for the advice! I have done just about everything to fix my toilet (that was refilling every 2-5min) and this advice actually worked. Not sure how or why but it worked. The repair was way easier to fix than i was expecting. Thank you!!!
Jake, I've been enduring this ghost flushing for over a year.. After viewing your video, for this issue, I investigated the water tank and found return-water-supply hose submerged and laying outside the return water supply pipe. Using your guidelines for proper installation, I made the fix. And ta-daaah!!! It works. No more leaking and ghost flushing. Thanks pal. Saved me a 15 mile trip to the hardware store and regained some amount of sanity.
This fixed my problem as well! The leak and phantom flush started after I replaced the fill valve. I replaced a gasket then the whole flush valve and it still leaked into the bowl. I cut the rubber hose and shortened it quite a bit and the leak/phantom flush stopped! I even had a plumber friend look at it before trimming the fill hose and he thought things looked fine at the time. I don't know why the shorter fill hose works but I'm very pleased with your advice. Thank you.
We also have ghost flushing, however, this fix didn't work for us. Our black tube isn't too logn and tucked inside the pipe, it's attached so the whole thing is totally above the white pipe - so the issue of being too long doesn't apply. The weird thing is that two of our toilets are currently having this problem. All parts have been replaced. Could there be something about the house plumbing that is causing this? Having two toilets ghost flushing seems awfully coincidental. Thanks to anyone who may have ideas.
Thank you!! Just raised the tube and angled it in a way that only about half an inch goes in. Mine doesn't have the center tube like yours to secure it. So, I angled the longer part of the tube, and put a couple of tacks to secure it against the lining of the tank for the time being, so that the end sits pretty decently just inside the main tube a bit. In the next day or two, I'll make it more secure with some wire or something. Anyway, thanks for the very easy fix!
The Fluidmaster fill valves that I installed in my 2 toilets 10 years ago are designed so that they do not automatically fill the tank when the tank loses water. The only time the tank fills is when the toilet is flushed. Furthermore, the end of the fill tube sits slightly above the opening of the overflow tube, which prevents siphoning. Recently, both toilet tanks started losing water, so I replaced the flappers. That solution only worked for one of toilets. The other toilet silently loses about 3 inches of water overnight. I noticed a little bit of water leaking onto the floor from one of the two bolts that secure the tank to the toilet, but there's not enough water on the floor to account for a loss of 3 inches overnight. I'm thinking the flapper seat must be bad, so that a flapper and the flapper seat cannot make a watertight seal.
This worked great for me. The hose was just too far into flushing valve. It takes longer to take the lid off than it does make the fix. Thanks for opening my eyes.
I've tried two flapper replacements so far, and was going to try some of the other assembies one at a time t0 eliminate possiblities and trouble shoot this ghost fushing (about once every 45 minutes or so). Thanks for saving me all that work and fustration. I pulled the hose up from bieng shoved down the pipe, placed the tip on a clamp that was attached to keep up above the water level, and whua-la! ...fixed. thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
I want to thank you for that information. I did notice that when I turned the water off, that the water in the tank when down half way and no more leaked out. The water level was at the level of the length of the hose. I just cut my hose to about a half inch. So far no problems. Thanks.
Thank you so much! I’ve been through 3 flappers and followed your instructions in this video and it worked. Wow. Thanks again. I was about go crazy trying to figure out what was wrong.
Thanks for the video. I hear mine run in the night. I checked the fill tube and it has a clip that keeps the hose above the tube so not the problem. What i did find is my float sits higher than it used to and now the water is at the top of the overflow tube. A quick adjustment and i am good for a while.
Thanks for this video.its very helpful. I changed all kind of toilet Seals no luck. Luckily I found this video and it’s life saver . It fixed my problem.
Mine was making noise when filling so I replaced the float and this happened. Couldn't sleep last night and noticed it was flushing a tiny bit every few minutes. I didn't think of it until watching this video. Thanks.
I have a Mansfield toilet. I have recently replaced the red gasket and it is still losing water and re-filling on occasion. I looked at the hose after watching your video and it is in there to the length that you recommended. I do not know why it is still leaking water. Any more suggestions?
This is the issue I have. We've replaced all the parts and it still phantom flushes. We will give your idea a try and see how it works. At this point we have nothing else to lose. I'm not replacing my toilet because it's a Kohler fancy smancy one (came with the house) AND they've tiled and grouted around the base leaving no way to get the toilet out without tearing up all the tile and a big hole because Kohler doesn't make this particular toilet anymore... It's over 20 years old. So iff this doesn't fix it, then I'm stuck with a phantom flushing toilet. My husband did the math regarding how much water is lost and how much money is going down the drain and it's basically inconsequential considering the cost of a new toilet and retileing my bathroom.
Here is where I got the parts. Came the next day: amzn.to/2F0gVvi

Thank you, my friend, for your big help. My toilet has had the same problem for over a few months. Now I fixed it with your hints! God bless you!
Omg thank you!! I had this happen and when looking the hose was not attached. I’m so grateful for your video because my sewage bill was ridiculous!
Here you are 3 years later saving my ass! I replaced everything and the minute i did this, the leaking stopped. Thank you!!
Brilliant! Such a simple trick fixed my toilet with no parts or labor costs!!
Jake,
I've been enduring this ghost flushing for over a year..
Thank you.
No Problem , glad it worked out for you!
You ever figure it out?
Finally! I have been going crazy replacing flappers and seals, this fixed the leaking! Thank you
A U-Pin from our paper days is handy to secure the pipe at desired level.
I can’t thank you enough, your video was very simple and useful, a plumber would have charged me hundreds of dollars to do what you did
Thank You for taking the time to do this video. This fixed my problem. My plumber brother in law suggested replacing the all toilet.
Love when you sprayed yourself after snipping the hose into the tank LOL
This is genius. I'm nominating you for a Nobel Prize.
This worked great for me. The hose was just too far into flushing valve. It takes longer to take the lid off than it does make the fix. Thanks for opening my eyes.
Gonna try this cause I've truer everything else and it's driving me crazy!!! Especially late at night.
Thank you! You are a generous! My toilet is working perfectly now.
God bless for sharing🙏🏽
You saved me a headache I was running out of idea’s myself.🙌tyvm
Simple fix saved my fix time. I couldn’t agree more with other positive reviews. Thanks
Thanks so much man for making video. It’s exactly what solved my problem! Saved me all the trouble and costs. You’re a blessing to many. 👍
Glad it did the trick for everyone! It didn't solve my problem!
I was about go crazy trying to figure out what was wrong.
problem fixed in under one minute. Thanks for sharing , I appreciate you👋👋👋
Thanks for the video.
Thank you that fixed the problem after I replaced the flush valve on my toilet I didn’t know what was wrong
Thank you . After buying a new flapper . I tried your suggestion and it worked.
Thank you so much. I’ve been through 3 flappers. What simple fix! Works great!
Mine was making noise when filling so I replaced the float and this happened. Couldn't sleep last night and noticed it was flushing a tiny bit every few minutes. I didn't think of it until watching this video. Thanks.
Great! Thanks for watching. There is some kind of siphon effect that is occurring when the tip of the tube is below the water level.
YUP.. This took care of it. Thank you, man!
I have a Mansfield toilet. I have recently replaced the red gasket and it is still losing water and re-filling on occasion. I looked at the hose after watching your video and it is in there to the length that you recommended. I do not know why it is still leaking water. Any more suggestions?
Just wanted to say thank you I went through 2 rebuild kits and it was doing the same thing snipped that sucker off and works great.
I, too, was having ghost flushing issues in both of my toilets. I followed your advice and so far so good! Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you so much. Literally just did what you said an hour ago and haven’t heard a sound since. Great job.
Thank you! Saved me from extra $40 a month in water bill. Could not figure it out until I found your video
You and me both brother. Damn city water bill had been $100 s month
Saved this video to share with friends and family. Thank you!
