Thanks for the great instructional video... I didn't know that aft muffler looking thing was a Cat... I thought it was a resonator, but when you shined that flashlight inside of it, it appears to be a Cat as well with that honeycomb look. I thought about not putting that on when I do this job.

@@Nobamaable glad it helped! I’ve seen where people cut them out but then have to modify the O2 sensors to not throw an engine code. Easier to keep it legal

Later model TJ I’m sure. In the older models the y-pipe going around the oil pan links to main cat via a 3-bolt flange. It’s very accessible but usually incredibly weathered and corroded. Virtually impossible to remove without grinding off these bolts. The cat-muffler joint bolts are much easier to remove. The replacement you got there is nice with that saddle clamp. Will make life way easier if ever has to be removed (for oil pan gasket, rear main seal, or oil pump replacements)

Robert, What are the part numbers for the replacement parts you ordered from Eastern Catalytic including the Saddle Clamp? Thanks.

      Hi Wayne,
I ordered both on Amazon and both are still available. The cat is the “Eastern Catalytic 20379 49 State Catalytic Converter.” The saddle clamp is the Evil Energy 2.5” Lap joint clamp. Here are the links, thanks for watching and good luck!

Any issues with that lap joint not fitting properly? I ordered the 2.5 and it seems a little small

Had no issue with it, fit snugly and has t budged. There will be a gap to give room for the bolts to tighten. Too big and the bolts would tighten fully before any pressure is applied to the exhaust pipe.

Just curious do you have to drop and cradle the trans just to get to those 2 manifold bolts to cat back? About to do my cats soon I ordered flow master ones just seems crazy to be messing with a trans to get to pipes!

I agree 100%, that part of the process fave me the most concern and would have avoided if I could. My Jeep is lifted so the geometry is different from stock and likely different from other modified jeeps. In this case the skid plate blocks access to the bolts to the muffler so had to be removed, and the skid plate holds the trans in place so needs to be temporarily supported. If you have tools to remove the bolts at the muffler with the skid plate on would be ideal, wasn’t the case for me unfortunately

Was their exhaust gaskets or donuts where the catalytic converters bolt onto the exhaust? My engine is ticking and it sounds like it's coming from the the catalytic converters.

Had no issues whatsoever. Nothing loose, no engine codes, runs great. Be gentle with the skid plate bolts. If doing this weekend maybe spray them all down with PB Blaster or WD40 now and let it penetrate and loosen in the course of the week. Good luck!

@@robertbartilomo845 Just replaced mine. Got everything tight and all 02 sensors plugged in and tighted down. Is it normal for it to smoke lightly from under the hood on the driver side after starting the Jeep up for the first time?

@@Bowlerboy99 you will probably smell the pipes burning off the first time it heats up. I don’t recall if it lasted more than that. Just make sure there is no smoke coming from the connection to the exhaust manifold if those bolts are loose.

My Bank 2 mini-cat (back one) was totally blown out too. I know your sensors are new, but are they NGK brand? Denso, Bosch and the others do not play well with the TJ computer.
Please make sure you have NGK. If you do not have NGK, that could be one possibility for your code issue is still hanging around.
Also... NGK ships with anti-seize on the sensor threads right out of the box. Additional anti-seize is not needed (or recommended for that matter).

    • @robertbartilomo845
      @robertbartilomo845  5 років тому

The code is gone and no pending code so far, thankfully. I did use NGK sensors which did ship with anti-seize. I did pull the sensors when the code returned to see if they were founded and did add more ant seize but hopefully not to their detriment. Thanks for the comment!

I can’t recall for certain but I was about a few hours. Keep in mind I took time to take video, and was doing it by myself having never done it it before. If I had to do it again and another set of hands I could do it in have the time. I had the one bolt I pointed out in the video that was hard to reach which I fought with for a while. Once I found the right tool it was easy.

@@robertbartilomo845 alright imma order it and kinda follow what you did. My only question is your 2.5 clamp, did you spin it around to where the smaller size is at the smaller side of the cat pipe? Lastly did you leave it at that placement or move to where the bigger cat pipe is exposed?
Oh and one last question unrelated, do you use the same type of clamp for muffler to tail pipe or did you keep/use the same skinny one like the one included? I plan to replace the entire exhaust once I have everything down
