“The BBC Is In A Mess!” Licence Fee Will Rise To £169.50 As Government Launches Review

- The BBC licence fee will rise by £10.50 to £169.50 a year, the Culture Secretary has confirmed as she announced a review into it.
The household payment, which funds much of the corporation’s operations, had been frozen at £159 and was set to rise in line with inflation next year.
However, the expected 9% increase - which would have meant an increase of around £15 from April 2024 - has been reduced, the Government said.
TalkTV’s Jake Berry is joined by media commentator Nigel Pauley to discuss the rise and whether viewers are getting value for money.

Nobody has to pay the licence tax. If you do not watch live TV or BBC iPlayer you do not need to pay. I have not paid for 3 years now, legally. Not paying Gary Lineaker 1.3 million would help. 😊

@@domingodesantaclara1130 Okay, but you have to pay it if you watch any live TV, which includes phone apps and websites (like ITVX, Channel 4 or my5). The law really needs to change in this area...
No visits so far. I stopped paying three years ago, filled in the online form stating that I would not watch live broadcasts or BBC iplayer. You have to do this very 2 years and it works. I don't miss watching the BBC at all....
It could go up £1000000 and it wouldn't bother me as I've never given them a penny and never will.
Defund this heinous corporation.

I don’t get all this constant debate about whether the tv licence is “fair “ or “ value for money “ or misleading nonsense about being “ forced “ to pay or go to prison
If people don’t want to pay for a tv licence they don’t have to , no one is being forced and it’s not compulsory just because you happen to own a tv
I get that TVL are a pain in the arse with their constant threatening letters but there’s simple ways to stop them in their tracks

I pay for Prime , Now TV and Paramount + which combined is more than the tv licence but I make the decisions on what I watch and what I want to pay for not the BBC
The BBC needs to be made to raise their funds through advertising, they sell their material over the world, which we have paid for.....
Ironically, when they broadcast UK shows overseas, they do run ads then, and the content is on channels you have to pay for. But as far as I know, that's done by a separate company called "BBC Worldwide" or something and not all of the money from it goes back into the UK. So... why are we paying the BBC to make stuff which it can then sell overseas but we don't get all of the money from that? 🤷🏻♂️
Not to mention the other corporation they set up with public money known as BBC Studios.
Another run for profit company set up by the British tax payer but the rest of the world gets the BBC propaganda for free. Go figure. This practice is at best criminal.
Imagine Netflix or Disney or any other entertainment company threatening prison for not paying them or buying their service. The reality is that TV license is complete madness and it should've been abolished decades ago.

That would be great, but it's not currently possible to buy a TV, phone or tablet where you can lock-out the Beeb. So it basically comes down to you having to declare you don't use any of their services and whether they believe you
Oh and don't forget it's not just the BBC... the current law is that you have to pay it if you watch ANY live TV, on any channel, including via app or website
No, we don't need a state broadcaster. I haven't watched the BBC for over 5 years, I hardly watched it prior to that, I'm not wasting my money on a licence to watch it now, why would I need to watch it in the future! What I don't understand is why I need to pay a BBC licence fee to watch non BBC live channels!

I don't really watch it but after all this time only a few months ago I pushed myself to get it only because letters were piling up in my house warning I needed a TV licence. Now they are putting the price up I think I'm gonna cancel it. I can't afford to pay out for all these programs. I don't have the time to watch it live I'm a catch up kinda guy.
More money to watch the same rubbish, Attenborough, Berry, Lineker etc. We should all stop paying and go and clog up the courts.

The Royal Charter is the problem. No government can do much until the 31st December 2027. Unless they get the privy council and King Charles to rip it up (would need legislation in parliament also) and you can bet the BBC will drag it through the courts. Even if they decriminalise it, the government will still have to pay the bill, due to the Royal Charter. That's why they keep delaying decriminalising the licence fee. Personally the Royal Charter needs to go completely. It's so old and outdated it shouldn't be a thing whatsoever in a modern day society.
If I was prime minister I would do legislation to remove the Royal Charter and have King Charles and the privy council sign off on it. No network like the BBC Should have that much power. Nobody should.
We don't need a state broadcaster anymore as all channels show government propaganda. I don't have a license as I don't watch broadcast TV, there's nothing to interest me. The BBC should have the same format as itv x, watch free with ads or ad free with a subscription.
Well, that "Britbox" service does include the BBC, so anyone who subscribes to that is essentially paying Auntie twice

I wish it was easy not to pay the Licence Fee or we could have TVs where channels could be locked-out or something to prove we don't watch it. I rarely do, and to me the Licence Fee feels more like a "standing charge" for owning a TV, especially given i watch most stuff on my phone or laptop anyway.
And before people say "just cancel it", I've heard too-many horror-stories of people who have then having people turn up at their door, or credit-checks being ran against them, or people turning up at their workplace or endless calls, e-mails and letters. I'd prefer a safe way to be able to cancel it
People who say “ I just cancelled it and nothing happened” are full of s**t.
Don't take offence but stop being a total mug and grow a pair! If you are NOT going to watch it, cancel it. And those horror stories sound like BBC propaganda, I haven't paid for a license in about 10 years now (and haven't ever watched any live TV either) and they just send stupid letters which go in the bin. @@THEPete_ They don't have any right to enter your property without permission from a court, anyway, unless you choose to let them in. But that's only part of the issue. The LF needs to be reformed and apply only to the BBC and not have to be paid for watching any channel live

Like any public service,TV has to be paid for. Instead of moaning about either the licence fee or the BBC…..why don’t people come up with suggestions for paying for our national radio and TV service ? Privatise it ? Take a look at the cost,the propaganda of privatised newspapers/tv channels…..much like water/energy/transport/broadband/health……which have got cheaper,which have improved ? 48p a day looks good value.

At £169.50 this is still less than 50p a day; that's one fifth of a cup of coffee where I live! One of the few bargains left to the British public given the breadth of output; a true broadcaster in every sense of the word!
