Former Top Gear Presenter Says He "Hasn't Paid TV Licence Fee In Years"

- Former presenter of BBC’s 'Top Gear' Steve Berry says he hasn’t paid the TV licence fee in years, following the announcement that it will rise by £10.50 next year.
For the past two years the licence fee has been frozen at £159 but it was previously agreed it would rise in line with inflation after April 2024, which would see it increase by 9% - or £15 - to £173.30.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told reporters over the weekend that the BBC should be “realistic about what it can expect people to pay at a time like this” and the BBC should be looking to “cut its cloth appropriately” as the country continues to deal with the heightened cost of living.
Steve says: “They haven’t got anything for me!”

This is one tax you can decide NOT to pay. Don't
Exactly, if the tax drys up their finished hopefully very soon.
Not without being labeled a Criminal. You have that choice, but rest assured they will prosecute and label you a Criminal if you are 'caught' watching BBC TV. Mental!
@@fongy200
That's incorrect. You won't be labelled a criminal if you don't break the law. I stopped paying in 2014, and we have NEVER watched any live TV since, or any catch-up service. We watch UA-cam and DVDs. If you don't want to pay the tax, don't - it's perfectly legal...as long as you stick to the law.
not if sunak has his way.
@@barryfoster453 That's exactly what I explained.
Decriminalise the licence fee. You can’t be put in prison for illegally entering the country but not pay the licence fee you can be jailed.
It’s not non-payment of the licence that you can be imprisoned for, it’s non-payment of the fine you get for not having a licence.
You can also get imprisoned for the non-payment of a fine for, say, speeding, going through a red light, riding a bicycle on the pavement, etc.
The charge is “non-payment of …..” then you add in whatever it is that hasn’t been paid for.
If you pay the fine, the courts aren’t interested in you.
My late father was a Magistrate here in England.
You only need to pay a licence fee if you’re watching anything bbc and / or any other live feeds at all.
You Tube, Netflix etc don’t need a licence.
It’s only criminal if you’re caught watching what the licence covers.
They can only take you to court with evidence.
They can’t get evidence without entering your property first.
They have no right to enter your property without first having evidence and then a court order.
Ignore them.
@@enkisdaughter4795 semantics. Take the 400 thousand people who have stopped paying and refuse to pay the fine, which equates to the license fee plus court costs, amounts to the same . If you don’t pay, you go to jail. Come on on a dinghy, no threat of jail, given a phone, bed and board 1st class healthcare. Nope I’m this day and age the bbc should be a subscription service only. Lots of their back catalogues are shown on channels that the bbc own that show adverts and at part of subscription channels. They get money from those deals too.
Wrong, completely. Nobody can be jailed for not paying the licence fee. Various proceedings, Court proceedings and otherwise, have to be initiated long before even getting remotely near anyone being jailed. Stop your ignorance and scaremongering.
@@brimkathstampex2306 your arguing but that isnt the issue here the fact you can even be put in court over a subscription you dont want or use thats the real issue..... your being charged for a service you dont use or want and that isnt acceptable and the fact a tv subscription can land you in prison is completely mad

As an old fart I can remember the days when the BBC made programmes that were actually worth paying for. Top comedies like Dad's Army, Morecambe and Wise, The Goodies, Monty Python, Only Fools and Horses, Yes Minister and more. Plus dramas like I Claudius and The Singing Detective, as well as good, interesting informative stuff like Coast and Tomorrow's World. Now it's all crappy woke propaganda from the News to Doctor Who. So bad I gave up watching TV totally a few years back and don't miss it at all.

Just cancelled recently after actually realising WE DON'T watch live TV often enough to warrant it !. I spend most of my life watching UA-cam, documentaries and things like this, I've always just paid it simply because I can't be bothered with the hassle of the goons hitting the doorstep, but enough is enough, it was hard enough to keep paying after the BBC was shown to have known what was going on with Saville, but after realising we don't even watch the BBC or most other channels, I'm now one of the cancellers !

The first guest to speak was spot on in his analysis of the BBC.
The viewer is indeed the program controller these days, there's tens of thousands of hours of non iPlayer content available via a firestick, Roku, Chromecast etc.
I think it's game over for the licence fee model.
You can use his name ... Michael Cole.
No Licence Fee inflation in our house. There hasn't been for a long time.
First step should be to make a policy of nobody gets paid more than the prime minister and see how that develops.
The t.v. licence will rise by the same percentage the state pension is due to rise next year. Another example of the government giving in one hand and taking away with the other.
For all I care they could raise it by 1000%. 1000% of nothing is still nothing....

On the extremely rare occasion that BBC TV Licensing enforcers knock on your door because you don't have a tv licence - either don't open the door or, once they have identified themselves, just say "No Thanks" and close the door. Don't interact with them.

That's exactly how the producers of Dr Who looked when they recently appeared to justify their lefty activism in the storylines and characters and how they know they're right to write it like that and anyone who complains is wrong, astounding display of hubris - you can barely believe these people exist in real life.
They have nothing but contempt for the average person and see us like animals who need to be trained to sit and remain in the shadow of their upwardly turned noses.

I'm pretty sure that much of the latest Dr Who content is made to be deliberately antagonistic to mainstream viewers. They can't help themselves, and will be laughing their socks off at how upset traditional viewers and fans will be. The demise of the show won't bother them in the slightest !

I pay for my fathers tv license hes 78. At 75 it should have been free but the law changed and id promised my late mother id honour it.
The licence fee has to go, or at least be modified so it pays for the BBC only. It isn't fair that we have to pay this fee even if we never watch the BBC. I gave up my licence in 2020 and it really bugs me that I can't now watch live broadcasts from ANY TV channel without breaking the law. The licence should be just for the BBC and those who don't watch the BBC should be exempt from paying it.
What kind of country taxes people to watch TV? Have they not heard of subscription fees?

The government needs the BBC for propaganda distribution so if vast numbers of people ditch licences then I wouldn't put it past them to get a new law out where every household have to pay as an addition to their Council Tax (Poll Tax).
I think you are right. But it's the BBC that is talking about going down this route.
Yes, I can totally believe a 'tax' of some kind coming into play before too long. However, it could end being interesting. The increasing cancellation of TV licenses shows that the public are becoming more disillusioned and distrustful of the BBC, so for the Govt to introduce a 'tax' of some kind could result in 'Poll Tax' level of discontent!

I refuse to pay into the British Bashing Corporations legal extortion racket, I don't want the airwaves equivalent of the Guardian broadcasted into my home, and our gutless government giving the British Bashing Corporation permission to raise it's extortion racket payment by £10.50 next year (after the next general election conveniently) shows exactly what this government thinks of the struggling British people.
BBC tell us they are fantastic and so loved by the people. Why then are they terrified of going to a subscription model?
My 85yr old mum has just cancelled her TV licence bye bye BBC ✌️
Give over that finger was the best thing I’ve seen for years
Surely by increasing the licence fee it will encourage even more people to stop paying it.
Exactly! ....bring it on 😊
That's why they keep announcing new threats, like detector vans that can actually detect nothing.
My pension won't go up by that percentage.
The crux of the arguement is, why should people have to pay for something that neither need nor, in a lot of cases, actually want? The BBC is archaic in it's funding, receives enough per year to run a small country, and yet the quality just keeps going down and down, largely due to it's insistence of trying to appease all except the majority who pay for it all. Which circles back round to why should they have to be put in a position where they have to pay for something that, a lot of the time, simply isn't for them?
The BBC has no other option but to go commercial and subscription, the only reason it's been allowed to hang on like a zombie is because it's the governments voice. Personally, I would pay the licence fee if they provided full live coverage of just three motorsport events, Formula 1, Moto GP and the world sports car championship, then, for me, it would be value for money. But the BS they currently put out is of no interest to me at all. News can be had from anywhere, for free and better than the BBC. Considering they have 22000 staff and produce what they do suggests they are a monster of waste and inefficiency, but of course they can afford to be because they have guaranteed funding, and that is the problem.
Don't forget all the ad revenue from the UKTV network and BBC America is a premium channel.
@@tonycrayford3893
Absolutely true and also the revenue from BBC productions. It defies comprehension as to why they need such huge funding, their competitors thrive on massively less. Also remember all the scandals that have emerged in recent years.
Make BBC self funding - they did with VOSA the driving standards agency years ago
So who do you think funds VOSA ?
If the funding for BBC is put onto a media tax I think there will be an uprising, it's bad enough not now been able to watch other broadcasters live if you don't buy a TV licence, where the money goes to the BBC, but at least have the option, not so, that won't be the case if it's added to council tax or broadband bill for example.
Stopped paying years ago.
This is how the BBC arrogantly see themselves : 'We welcome your feedback as we strive to safeguard our reputation as the world’s most trusted news organisation.'
Steve is a legend, I have met him several times, he even presented my with a cup for my custom motorcycle. A very nice man indeed. 👍
What I struggle to understand is that there are still people who pay TV licence. And not so much because of the utter crap TV that you get for your money but purely because I would refuse to spend hard earned money on funding BBC's political agenda, not to mention astronomical wages for talentless hosts like Lineker and Vine just to mention two of the worst ones. They are not having a penny from my wallet, ever.
I will never understand how Lineker can be worth over 1million pounds a year just to talk about football, and all the other presenters are also paid ridiculous salaries.
What about the pain of single mums and the elderly getting bullied every day by theese goons it needs to stop NOW !!!
Haven't paid it in 8 years. No TV, don't need those nonces in my world thanks.
In my opinion the BBC license fee is legalise extortion. I pay by direct debit and didn’t realise how much it costs. There’s no way I will be paying the increase. So next year I will be cancelling my tv licence.
Why can’t the bbc turn the license into a subscription service? Pay it you watch it, don’t pay, don’t watch. What’s so hard about that. Sky do it, Netflix do it, UA-cam do it, why can’t BBC?
The TV Licence is like the National Lottery, it's a voluntary tax. As long as you don't watch or record live-to-air TV programs / channels or use BBC iPlayer - you do not legally need a TV Licence. You can quite legally watch it all a while later on catch-up TV, other than what's on the iPlayer. If and when a TV Licence salesperson knocks your door and says who they are - just politely say: no thanks and shut the door. (Say nothing at all else and sign absolutely nothing.)
I rang up the licence agency and i in a way stuck the middle finger up to say im not paying it any longer. They have to prove your not watching live tv. So to the bbc shove it.
Most people say that young people don’t watch the BBC I think you will find a lot of middle age people I am 50 year old and I don’t watch ANY BBC stuff it crap and nothing for me.
My goodness! I'm just glad I stopped funding these buffoons a year and a half ago. £150 pa to be called a gammon and preached against is really not worth the money.
I’m not paid for the TV licence since I’ve been in this new property, I was the first one in this property from after it was built 12 years ago and I haven’t bought a TV licence yet.
I will be never buying a TV licence because in 12 years the only thing I wanted to watch was Doctor Who 60th anniversary and I just actually got in my car. I went to my mum‘s house and watched it so I wouldn’t need a TV licence..
An excellent discussion with people in the "know!"
Don't pay it and won't pay it . I stopped watching live TV a long time ago . Yes I miss the darts and snooker but I'd rather go without than fund these scumbags.....we didn't know about Jimmy .....bullshit
Absolutely,do not engage with them in any way, don’t speak to them or answer any questions and don’t under any circumstances let them in your property, they have NO right of entry so don’t give it them.
You know it just occured to me after I saw her excuses, it was a joke between the production staff & so on. The BBC went hard on the subject about workplace abuse, saying if you swear or use cursing language to another employee, that's abuse & you deserve to lose your job because no one should have to put up with being sworn at in the workplace. But it's apparently OK for the BBC to do this, even if it's a joke as she claimed... Hmm
Who pays that fee? The watchers or the news place?
I'm old and I wouldn't ever watch the BBC
I never watch BBC news. I want unbiased facts! I get most of my info from youtube and smaller channels. They are not fit for purpose

Steve Berry got it spot on re Jim Davidson and Noel Edmonds.👍
You only have to look at this year's so-called "Christmas highlights" to see what's wrong with the BBC....
Doctor Who, Strictly Come Dancing, Eastenders, Michael McIntyre's The Wheel, Call The Midwife & Mrs. Brown's Boys....the same bloody crap we've had year after year.
Some may argue that Morecambe & Wise were on every year in the 70's, but they were a very talented double act who had equally talented writers & producers who worked their arses off to ensure that their Christmas shows were always special. By stark comparison, today's writers & producers are so naff that it looks like they've just cobbled the Christmas shows together &, er, well that'll do.
The BBC will collapse sooner or later, preferably sooner
Hopefully this rise in the licence fee will encourage people to cancel their licences. By doing that you can still watch TV but not live broadcasts - that leaves plenty of other programmes to watch. Personally I watch so much on UA-cam etc that I don't miss terrestrial TV at all, in fact it's at least 3 months since my television has been switched on, except to watch a DVD.
BBS used to be excellent 20 odd years ago, I wonder what has changed? Management?

Main reason is if I tuned in my telly id get about 8 channels and my factor says I have to get the aeriel fixed myself. But dont miss the telly at all.
There is obviously double standards in the BBC now when they protected Saville, Harris & Hall for decades, but booted out Edwards for far less a crime if it can actually be classed as a crime what he did! But then again they have funny ideas about balance when it comes to climate and Brexit and other political ideologies! They are extremely one sided on all of these topics!
That was when the BBC news told the truth

Dont Watch It , Dont Pay For It.
Change the concept and see if there is any logical: Should you be forced to pay for Harrods when you shop in other stores... and when it is done through coercion and force? The government needs them, as they are one of the strongest outlets for their "information" and thats a challenge.
Maybe MP's would have a different view on the TV license if they actually paid and not claim it back on expenses
