These guys were perfectionists in the studio. They spent a lot of time trying to get the perfect lead guitar part. They rejected several offerings from top musicians until they arrived at what you hear. It's hard to find a bad song with these guys.
Two things: that bass line is NUTS, and the backing vocals by Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers are probably the most recognizable harmonies in rock music. By that I mean you hear it and you’re like hey, that’s Michael McDonald! Lol
Holy cow man are you gonna totally dig the Dan. Peg is quite possibly the smoothest groove ever. Really hone in on Chuck Rainey's bass it's phenomenal! A must watch is the Aja documentary with Donald Fagan and Walter Becker breaking down each song. How Rainey kinda went a little rogue laying down this bass line and how they couldn't find someone to really get the perfect solo until Mr Jay Graydon just nailed it on the first take(if I remember correctly)! Aja(the whole album) just oozes with musical perfection!
I didn't get to see stleay dan until about Fifteen years ago. I had gotten tickets to see them with my son. in keeping with my bad luck, Tuscaloo Alabama. THAT MACK, HE WAS SUCH A GREAT ENTER TAINER! YOU WERENT GONA LEAVE UNTIL YOU HAD THE BEST TIME YOU EVER HAD!! MUSCLE SHOALS MISSES YOU, MAC! YOU MAC
Song Recs (though you can't go wrong with any of them): -Do It Again -Hey Nineteen -Deacon Blues Also, I'm so glad that (it seems) your audio troubles are gone. Imagine blasting this in your car. Nostalgia for a time we never knew, right there. I've been a Steely Dan fan since first hearing Do It Again on Guitar Hero III, and I've never looked back. Intricate, complex, textured, it's part of the rotation that fuels my writing process.
@@NealStidham Great suggestions as well, thank you for commenting on some I missed. I don't know how I forgot "Reelin' in the Years," that's actually my favorite Steely Dan track.
Glad you are digging Steely Dan. I got into them about ‘00 when my Dad gave me Aja for Xmas. You listed of course some classics but I actually like some of the deep cuts the most. Have you heard some of those yet? Such as; -here at the western world -your gold teeth -night by night -Haitian divorce -sign in stranger -king of the world -kings -pretzel logic -Gaucho -glamour profession -Dr Wu -everyone’s gone to the movies -any major dude will tell you
Anything and everything from The Royal Scam, Steely Dan's best IMHO. Aja is their pièce de résistance, but The Scam is just super funky, gritty, and groovin' all the way through.
Have fun deep diving down that rabbit hole! Great sophisticated stuff , can't go wrong with the entire Aja album. Like others have said, "FM" is a good one, "Black Cow", "Do It Again", "....great jazz harmonies in a rock/blues format. These guys knew their music theory and composition! "Josie" has one of the most interesting and uniquely composed intros in pop/rock and is discussed in music schools like Berkelee (per Rick Beato's channel).
I see you know good music. With their off the wall lyrics, bizarre chord changes, the dan always finds that funky groove. I am 70 years old and grew up with them. Mind blowing group!!
It's so much fun watching younger people discovering great music that we grew up listening to. I may be biased but there's not a lot of new music out there that excites me anymore. Sure there are a few new artists but not many. And when you've been listening to music for forty or fifty years it's hard to be surprised. You know where they are going, you've heard it before. Enjoy your trip young man.
As a West Virginia girl, I grew up on country music. When I was about 13 (1974), I "discovered" Steely Dan. The first song I ever heard by them was Rikki Don't Lose That Number and I was HOOKED. I was in my mid-20s when I first heard Bodhisattva and was even more blown away. (It came out in 1973 but somehow I missed it.) Here's a list of my favorites besides the two just mentioned (not in any particular order): Hey Nineteen (the beginning lick!), Black Cow, FM, Reelin' in the Years, Dirty Work, Do It Again, Josie, Deacon Blues, Kid Charlemagne, Babylon Sisters, Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Don't Take Me Alive. ENJOY!
Steely Dan is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I love “Any Major Dude will Tell You” , “Bhodittsava”, “Kid Charlemagne”, “Only a Fool Would Say That” to name a few…. Definitely a band worth the trip down the rabbit hole
‘Hey Nineteen’ and ‘Do It Again’ are two of my personal favs but it seems to make many other fav lists going through the comments. Can’t argue with any of the recommendations put forth in the comments really… Steely Dan is just one of those bands that stands apart.
Steely Dan do be like that. There's no other band that sounds quite like them. My favorite is "My Old School." "Bodhisattva" and "Turn That Heartbeat Over Again" are also a lot of fun.
One of the biggest rabbit holes in modern popular music. Try "Black Cow", "Do It Again", "Reelin' In The Years, "Dirty Work", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", "Hey Nineteen", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "The Fez", "Green Earrings", "Josie", "My Old School", "Kid Charlemagne", and only about say 100 others.
Man U R Taking Me WAY Back!! This Used to Be one of those Top Hits on the Radio back in the Mid 70's. Good song! We were Humming this in JR. High School!! 😁 Love Your Reaction to This! Great Song! Great Reaction! Till next time! Peace, & Love!
Check out these SD tunes; Bodhisattva, My Old School, Bad Sneakers, Reeling In the Years, Hey Nineteen and Rikki Don't Lose That Number. They're all certified bangers!
They are amazing. You can here Michal McDonald of the Doobie Brothers doing back round vocals on this song before he became famous. They were notorious perfectionists and difficult to work for, but the end result was proof of their genius. They have a live album called "Live in America" that covers all the best songs. The band is so tight if you were to remove the crowd noise you would swear this was done in a studio. I would highly recommend this version of 'Aja' for the outstanding drum work.
Zeppelin is my all time favorite band !! But Steely Dan just might take the 2nd spot for me!!! Take a listen to “Kid Charlemagne” !!! Great lyrics & awesome guitar on that track!!!
When real musicians get off work, they listen to Steely Dan. S.D is 2 guys, and a recording band of different hired musical hitmen for different recordings. The best of the best of the best. Recommendation: You know how good of a guitarist Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin is? His favorite guitar solo is from Steely Dan’s “Reelin in the Years”, guitar played by Elliott Randall. It’s just an epic song, and the intro is my favorite part.
Hi Zay, glad your finally getting around to some Steely Dan, they don't have one bad song and they have many. "Black Cow ", " Green Earrings ", "Babylon Sister", just a few
You can listen to Steely Dan for the next 30 years and, if you’re a fan of well written, crafted, and produced music, you’ll find something more to love every damn time you here them.
IMPECCABLE musicianship. They would settle for nothing less. You need to do Reelin' in the Years ! Other great ones are Do it Again, Hey Nineteen, My Old School, Bodhisattva, Don't Take Me Alive. I promise you will love every one...and this is just a start !
You know what's staggering? Aja is 45 years old !! (1977) I was 20 when it came out. Still sounds so fresh because it's absolute quality. Standing the test of time with each generation. 👌🏻
You accidently stepped into one of the deepest and rewarding rabbit hole there is. You can't go wrong with any SD you choose from the comments section. Nice react, BTW.
As noted below, FM (No Static) and Black Cow are great followups. From there on, it's one big giant huge rabbit hole. And that's not even counting Donald Fagen's solo albums, all must hears. Welcome to the world of Steely Dan!
Dude - these guys are so impressive and so many great musicians have been significantly inspired by them. Glad you got a thrill from this great song. Keep up your reactions!!
They are the best!! Every album is fantastic! I'd start with 'Do It Again', then 'Aja', then 'Home At Last'.... there are hundreds that are fantastic like this!
Steely Dan is a band where, if you do like their style, you almost just can't miss no matter what you listen to. Some of my favorites includes Hey Nineteen, Pretzel Logic, Do it Again, and Showbiz Kids. A couple of their biggest hits include Reeling in the Years and Rikki Don't Lose that Number. But everything they do is good. They were perfectionists with their sound and production.
Do It Again, Reelin' In the Years, Bodhisattva, My Old School, Black Friday, Kid Charlemagne, The Caves of Altamira, Don't Take Me Alive, Black Cow, Aja, Deacon Blues, Home at Last, Josie, Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, and many more!
I HAD THE FEELIN AS YOU DID BACK IN 1972 WHEN I PUT THE ALBUM CANT BUY A THRILL ON MY SHERWOOD TURN TABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME,GOOD MUSIC STANDS THE TEST OF TIME,WELCOME TO THE S.D. FAN CLUB MY FRIEND.
I like a song that Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen did in 1982 as a solo artist. It was called "I.G.Y" (International Geophysical Year) and it was from his solo album "The Night Fly" and the album was based on his growing up in the 1950s. I.G.Y.(International Geophysical Year). This song was from Donald Fagen's 1982 album "The Nightfly" and it was based on his growing up in the 1950s. The Year 1955 was classified as the International Geophysical Year which lasted from July 1,1957 to December 31, 1958.This period of time refers to an international science project that was going on at the time. "Peg" is my favorite Steely Dan song my second favorite being "FM" from the movie of the same name that was released in 1977.
Glad you finally got here. Thing to know about Steely Dan is that they were more of a concept than a group. Their first album was with pretty much the same band, but after that they decided they could do better if they brought in some of the world's best studio musicians to play parts specifically how they wanted them. That's why basically none of their songs sound anything alike. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are the two principle guys and founders of the band. They were basically their own genre of music. Kid Charlemagne, Black Cow, Do it Again, Reeling in the Years, are just a few of the many, many amazing songs they put out. You could basically pick any song off that compilation you have there and you can't go wrong. They barely have a stinker in their entire catalog. Peg is from the Aja album, and you should do that entire album, every song is fantastic. Danathon needs to be done!!!
In college, one of my courses was to study and perform the music of Steely Dan. One of the highlights of my musical career. You gotta check out Kid Charlemagne, amazing keyboards.
Like Toto, Steely D blended pop, rock, R&B, & smooth jazz into an incredible mix - takes a lot of skill to do that well & make radio friendly hits. Now give 'Black Cow' a listen.
Kid Charlemagne, Green Earrings, Black Cow, Do it Again, Aja, Black Friday and New Frontier(Donald Fagen) are just to get you started, there's so much more.
We had the best music back in the day didn’t we?! Steely Dan is at the top of many peoples list! Theirs is a very deep rabbit hole so buckle up!! The musicianship is stellar & it will always be some of the best music you will ever hear 🎸🎤♥️🔥 “Josie, FM, Dirty Work, Reelin’ in the Years, Do It Again, Hey Nineteen & Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” will get you started 😂
Led Zeppelin is my favourite band but i discovered Steely Dan for the first time when i was just 19 years old (30 years ago). I love their variety and unique sound. Plenty of brilliant songs but i will suggest "Do it again" .
This made my day! My favorite band. The upper crust of music. Go deep on this band. It's simply amazing shit! Zay, check out Black Cow, Reeling In The Years, Kid Charlamane, Green Earrings. Literally so many I could go on and on. Banger after banger
Steely Dan is a genre-defining band in the sense they created their own -- no one else sounds like them. The album photo you presented on your screen during the song is a 4-CD box set collection of some of their best work. It doesn't hit everything but it's a fabulous set. You could literally play any track off of that compilation and you'd be happy. My favorite of theirs is "Your Gold Teeth" from Countdown to Ecstasy [1973].
You gotta check out the album Aja! All that stuff is TASTEY!! Also do "Do it Again" and "Reeling' In the Years" and "My Old School"! Great stuff! Such a chill groove with great musicianship and lyrics!
You got it bro! Steely Dan is the best group ever and it’s not even close IMO. They don’t have a bad song or album. Literally everything they made was/ is a gem, they never phoned it in. They’re just a vibe that never gets old especially cause every song is so unique. Enjoy! Since you like Peg so much you should check out Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, or maybe even Babylon Sisters next.
Dude - awesome reaction! I love seeing younger people get into the greats of classic rock! If you want a couple of great Steely Dan songs to try, give a listen to "Time Out Of Mind" and "Black Cow". Trust me!
I'm 61 years old and am so happy to have grown up with the greatest music ever.
You can throw a dart at the Steely Dan discography and hit gold every time. These guys are next level.
💯
Top comment!
They are not next level they are THE LEVEL!!!! above them nothing else brother :)
glad you discovered SD. now you understand why older people don't like today's music. keep diving into the music of the 70s and 80s
These guys were perfectionists in the studio. They spent a lot of time trying to get the perfect lead guitar part. They rejected several offerings from top musicians until they arrived at what you hear. It's hard to find a bad song with these guys.
"It's hard to find a bad song with these guys". I've been trying for years. I'll let you know when I find one.
@@helgar791 yeah, me recently discovering them, there are some songs harder to digest, but I always end up liking them

“Do it again” is 🔥
I used to get kidded back when they came out as part of "the wine and cheese club." Great musicians, very tight. I love the song Asia. 👍❤🤙
I'm so jealous of you, getting to listen to Steely Dan for the first time.
Yeah, musical perfection. Every instrument grooving in total harmony.
I heard this song for the first time a couple of days ago. It really captures the feeling of living in the moment. Wonderful song.
Been grooving to Steely Dan since the 70's. Loved seeing your first reaction
Steely Dan is in the jazz spectrum of rock, great reaction. Look up how they chose the band’s name.

I was 20 when it came out.
Still sounds so fresh because it's absolute quality. Standing the test of time with each generation. 👌🏻
Aja, Deacon Blues, Reelin' in the Years, Rikki Don't Lose That Number! There are so many more!
True jazz/Rock fusion! Just the beginning! 😎👍
Do the whole Aja album it’s 🔥The song “Black Cow” has one of the sickest horn arrangements throughout.
Yes. Aja stay nexy to my old school direct drive turntable set, ans I take Steely Dan withme when shopping for great speakers.
One of the very few albums that get better with age. Recorded in '77 but sounds fresh in 2023. And always will. A rare perfect album, start to finish.
You accidently stepped into one of the deepest and rewarding rabbit hole there is. You can't go wrong with any SD you choose from the comments section. Nice react, BTW.
Steely Dan has been heavily sampled in Hip Hop. Check out Kid Charlemagne and Black Cow.
Black Cow, FM, Deacon Blues, Josie. All great Steely Dan songs.

You gotta check out the album Aja! All that stuff is TASTEY!! Also do "Do it Again" and "Reeling' In the Years" and "My Old School"! Great stuff! Such a chill groove with great musicianship and lyrics!
Steely Dan is for the thinking man Sir!!
The bass line in this song is soo sick !!
Steel Dan is some of the best music to groove to that I know
Deacon Blues
My Old School
Dirty Work
Bro! Love watching your reactions! Gotta get a microphone though!
My favorite SD: Home at Last, Deacon Blues, Green Earrings, Do It Again, Two Against Nature
You should do an album sequence of these guys. They just don't miss!
ICONIC BAND😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Dude - awesome reaction! I love seeing younger people get into the greats of classic rock! If you want a couple of great Steely Dan songs to try, give a listen to "Time Out Of Mind" and "Black Cow". Trust me!
You don't need suggestions with these guys, each song is as good as the next. My favorite band since i was a kid in the 70s
