I try the Legendary Tones Mr Scary Mod on my Mesa Boogie Badlander. Now it sounds like a real, bonified metal amp - Розваги
One additional comment I should add is that the mod unit is wired using silicon flex wiring to the socket so it is designed to rotate. That means you can set it up the other way with controls facing backward and get easier access there without taking off the front panel. That said it is designed as “set and forget” for whatever amp you use it with. Just wanted to note that in case for any interested viewers.

I immediately ordered one after watching Kyle’s video. I have a Badlander 100 and already love the tone… kind of contemplating using it in my JCM900 that I have never liked.
They need to make a “Office Space 2” and show Miltons office in the basement and it’s set up like this 😂😂😂
Put one in my Marshall TSL 100. Made the amp sound incredibly nasty without the need for a boost. Love it.

Just traded mine the other day. BL needs a depth/resonance control and more gain on tap that doesn't require you to dime it. This by all accounts is a great addition to the amp \m/

Ok I was just listening here when you made your tweaks around 6 minutes in on another browser doing some browsing....Picked up my jaw from the floor when you said the badlander was in crunch mode. That sounded really really good. Kind of like How I play my Bogner Ultra inteh "Clean" Mode ;)

well im f*%*% sold. I love this amp but feel the same way. I have been patiently waiting for some kind of mod to hit the market. This amp has the potential to be one of the best modern amps in existence but seems to be missing what this mod gives it.

This is what using a tube amp to boost a tube amp sounds like.
I prefer using several rack tube preamps instead of pedals for boosting amps now. I have more control with the EQ of the preamp vs a scary mod.
Can use rack tube preamp with any amp.
Tube preamp as a suedo boost destroys regular pedals.

man that is killer! Great video man! hey curious how do you go about mixing the royer 121 and 57 in the daw or mixer to get your tone. Do you use any eq, compression etc. are the volumes of the mics the same or do you mix to tase? Thanks for all you do man !
Thanks for commenting, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. So, to your question, there is a special clip you can buy for both of these mics to be in Phase with each other. I mix using my mixing console to taste. The sm57 is a bit higher in the mix because I want that nice Cut and Sizzle from that. The Royer 121 is mixed slightly lower but it captures all of that great low end and punch as well as some low mids

Very solid sound compared to previous demonstration. Is this month specific to this amp; or can it be applied to let’s say… Mesa boogie mark 525?
Can't use them on Mark Series amps.
I have a mid 00's 100w Bugera head that's been wasting space for nearly 20 years. I'm going to have to try this on it. Another great demo, Jarrod. One question: Do mods such as this shorten the life of tubes?
I can respond from my perspective. Tube life is not an issue. It is really only a factor (with or without the mod) with output tubes - especially when you are cranking up say an old Marshall or Vox AC30 that doesn’t have a master volume. When you are cranking the amp to compression like in the old days. These days the preamp is providing the majority of the tone and the output tubes will shape and sculpt the tonality (it’s the final signal before going to the speakers) but we generally don’t push them the way we used to. And actually for heavier sounds, pushing the output tubes doesn’t sound very good as things can get over-compressed. But to answer your question, no issue with tube life being shorter at all. The design has been validated and blessed by great designers including Mike Soldano and my co-designer Andy Marshall.
As far as the Bugera, it’s not going to be compatible. Check out the LegendaryTones site and there’s info there about amps that are compatible that we’ve validated. Thank you for the interest!

This Scary Mod is such a great little creation. In regards to having to use it with a newer high gain amplifier is abit absurd and a fail by Mesa. I think if you have the amp it would be smart to grab the Scary mod but I definitely wouldn’t advise buying a Badlander and a Scary Mod when there are exceptional high gain amps much cheaper right out the box.
In saying that, the badlander sounded close to the best I’ve heard 👌
Hey Jarrod. Quick question. I take it that this amp is running thru your pedal board and it is in a 4 cable setup? I am asking because I am curious about the usage of a noise gate being used. It sounds AMAZING and you have turned my head towards this amp once again
Thanks for commenting. Yes I am using the amp with my pedal board and the Noise Gate is running via four cable method. The Noise Gate I'm using is the Revv G8
@TONEWARS Great vid! I also use the Revv G8 through my Marshall DSL 2000, and it's a great gate. However, using 4 cable, the gate tends to eat my reverb from the amp and my Boss delay alive, even with the threshold set at half or less. Have you had this problem, and if so, how did u remedy it? I was going to get mr. scary mod and use it for my peavey Valveking .
We sound like we have the same luck working with tools. What should take 10 minutes takes me hours, sometimes days because of stripping screws etc… us rocket surgeons.
Interesting mod, never tried one so I don't know what all the hype is all about, but I headed over to KB's channel to have a listen and the mod just sounded like it had a bit more presence and gain. I question whether an EQ in the fx loop would give just as good of a difference at a fraction of the cost.
I totally get it. It’s one of the challenges with video in general and demos as the differences are always more subtle than real-world use. What I tell people is there is nothing wrong with using a boost or other devices! This is just a different flavor and approach - because it’s adding its gain stage later downstream in the circuit at the tone stack, it’s enabling a different feel - where you can turn down the preamp gain at the front end for better definition/articulation and then get the additional needed sustain back by using the mod. Cost/price I definitely acknowledge as well, but we’ve opted to 100% build here in the US and support a number of regional businesses, from the casing to the boards. I could take it overseas and reduce the price but have opted not to as I like knowing I’m helping (even in a small way) many of the local/regional businesses here.

This mod adds more gain and fullness to the amplifier in a way that an EQ in the loop could never do. The feel, saturation, sound and response are completely different now. A lot of people would probably forgo the overdrive with this amplifier by using this mod
I’m struggling with the badlander that I’ve got for review as well. It’s a really strange sounding amp. It has a good amount of gain for what I want to do, but it’s an incredibly dry and unsaturated gain that makes it feel very weak and when using my volume knob or a volume pedal to roll back the gain to try and clean up the sound, the amp just disappears.
I played my first show with it this weekend and had fairly good results. using a Jackson audio prism in front of the amp as an always on boost and then would use my golden boy drive on the tube screamer setting if I needed something really high gain, but the prism did a good job of adding Mmore saturation to the sound.
I honestly thought that I was doing something wrong at first as I know Mesas can be very temperamental with their EQ and tone stack but a lot of people are saying the same thing that I’m thinking about the amp.
I hate to say it, but in a high gain, modern rock sound dialed in, my jubilee absolutely whips this thing. Did you believe obviously isn’t the greatest thing around for modern metal but for anything less, did jubilee just flat out has a better sound.

@@TONEWARSgearshow Not yet. The Prism delivers great results. I'm considering it though since it's one less thing in my signal chain in front of the amp. I'm not necessarily after more gain from the amp, I'm wanting more saturation. It's an incredibly dry gain from the amp and (for better or worse) incredibly unforgiving but what hurts it the most for me is when I try to roll back the volume to clean up the sound, that's where it suffers the most... almost like all of the life has just been choked out of the signal.
I've been wanting to get a triple crown to see how it compares but after hearing this badlander, I'm scared it will be more of the same.
Even if the badlander doesn't stick around, I think it would sound great in the Jubilee but the standard vs reverse wiring has me a bit confused.
@@FastRedPonyCar thanks for responding. I'm telling you, that mod will give that amplifier everything that it's lacking. I felt the same way about my Badlander until I put the mod in there. Now it has more saturation and fullness in the field is much better as well
@@TONEWARSgearshow It's still a bit of a sour experience having to throw a $300 product at a $2500 amp to get a good sound. Seems like the Triple Crown is a better amp? the Mark VII is also on my list to try out but I'm working my way up the ladder. I don't do hardly any metal. My main gigging amps for years has been my Silver Jubilee and a SLO.
Which one did you use? Standard or reverse wire?

how hard is it to install? I’ve never tried mods so clueless about the process. do you need to solder wires or just replace the right tube?
It's very easy to install. It only takes a few minutes. No soldering required at all.
Ah screw it (pun intended ) man - this mod sounds great in the Badlander as well. It rips in my Ceriatone amps!

I do not get why some are saying this mod is the same as using a OD pedal? Its not at all! an OD or Distortion pedal will not do the same thing
