Just received an email from IK Multimedia touting their partner capture/tone packs... and lo and behold, there yours are! Congratulations, Jarrod! Very happy for you. Most well deserved opportunity.
Awesome video comparison guys. From my style of playing I think the IRD is the one for me. I think it sounds a little more full especially when you dialed in the trouble. Great comparison.
Thanks for commenting. My Kiesel is also on the bright side. Even though it has the same pickups as my Majesty guitars it's still brighter than them. I don't understand why that is the case. Some people say it's the bridge or the pots. I'm going to do some experimenting when I get a chance and try to address that issue.
It's odd that these guys are saying these two units sound so similar early in this video, when it's clear that tone between the two units in this demonstration is so very different. (Although a bit later in the video they sound much more similar with EQ adjusted.) I happen to be listening through Koss Porta Pro headphones plugged in directly to my computer, and the differences in tone are very obvious. It makes me wonder, are their ears blown out from years of playing guitar through loud amplifiers? Or are the speakers or monitoring equipment they are using in this video somehow masking most of the differences in tone? Early in this video, the IR-D sounds much thicker and darker with much more low end, while the IR-X sounds has much more presence in the upper mids and is tighter in the low end (less bass), which could potentially be more useful in a mix. Yet on the other hand, at 15:35, the IR-X sounded warmer than the IR-D, just like they said. But is that because the EQ's on the two units were perhaps set differently? I don't know. I like with the IR-D, you can set up the first channel for a very crunchy tone with it's own EQ, and set up the second channel for a lead tone, again with it's own EQ. (Just like what the guy on the right said at 11:42.) From what I understand, the IR-X is much more limited in the amount of gain available on first channel, such that it is only good for clean or edge of breakup tones. With the IR-D, there's a full range of gain available on both channels. It would be convenient to set up a tone on one channel, and then see if it can be improved on the other channel, and A/B them to determine which one is preferable.
Awesome demo, fellas!! You guys are both killer players who know how to put gear through its paces. I’ve had the IR-X for about a month, and now have an IR-D on the way 🤘🏽Tone for days! Thank for posting this shootout 👊🏽
One more question I play mostly with the amp and pedals at this point. What would be the best way to hook this up directly to my amp period in front or run it in the effect loop?
@@michaelmitchell5909 This is a silly question, but I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to some things that seems so simple for others. I run one cable from the return on the amp to what output or input on the pedal? Also, will I be able to use other effects pedals through the loop? Thank you again. I appreciate you guys.
If I understand correctly, if the Friedman IR X or D is run through an FX loop of any amp, you get 2 more amplifiers automatically? Wow. 500.00 for two more amps. Sounds like a super deal.
Second. And I was waiting for a vid just like this. THOUGH I really wanted to see a comparizon to the IR-X's Channel 1, as that is a Plexi like preamp, compared to the IR-D's JTM45 ish circuit.
We should have touched on that! Ch1 on the IR-X has way less gain than the IR-D and it’s voiced more like the IR-X. If we dialed the gain back on the IR-D that would have been an interesting comparison
Not sure what y'all are talking about. I'm reasonably certain that channels 1 and 2 are identical. Are you just referring to rolling down the gain in general?
@@slugtoenail Correct. The IR-D can do classic tones with the internal boost off and the gain rolled back. It’s a little different than the low gain channel of the IR-X
@@slugtoenail Yes, the IR-D's channels are the same, both the Dirty Shirley preamp. But the IR-X (first preamp pedal, from last year) has 2 differeny channels, channel 1 being a plexi preamp (Friedman version) and Channel 2 beig a BE-100 preamp. So talking about a lower gain comparison of either IR-D channe, which is a Dirty Shirly, that Dave Friedman based off of the JTM45 ampl to Channel 1 of the IR-X (based off of a Plexi ). I will wait for Friedman IR-JJ
Both sounded great, and I agree that the IR-D has something special about it.
Nicely done showering what both can do!
I can’t tell the difference, due to you guys are playing drop tuning metal
Great to have Steve as a guest shredder!
Thanks! Hoping to be back soon
Like the clarity of the IR x both pedal are nice but it's IR X for me

17:35 interesting. Didn't know that about Kiesels.

@@TONEWARSgearshow Good luck, Sir.
For my style, the IR-D gets the nod. I like the fuller sound!

What do you like
I never in a million years would have thought the ird could chug. Just dayum
I like the IR x because it will cut better in a mix
Like them both, but I dig the ir-D a lil more cuz it's got less "harshness" and doesn't sound thin.
Both are really cool! I use the IR-X but i would like to try the IR-D.
What a racket
Been digging the IR-X as a direct solution as well into amp FX return. Have two Friedman amps as well. Have an IR-D coming in today.
I’d like to hear them overlapped in a mix
Thanks for the video. IR-D is going to sell well.
there's something scratchy/quacky going on, is it the kiesel? what's that stringy sort of sound.
Did you post this before or after the 10 minute mark? They turned up the thump/resonance at that point and it seemed to mellow out a bit.
If you figure out what causes that let me know! Something about the way they are made. Leaning towards Music Man guitars in the future
How does the ir-x compare to the jel20? I have the ir-x and am fighting GAS for the jel.

Effects loop return

@surefire1333 if your using this pedal as a preamp, the output on the pedal goes to the return on the effects loop on the amp.

How do you do a 30 minute video with no time stamps? 😢
Hell yessss! This one goes out to all the boost karens out there. Lets see what they can teach us today.
The IR-X sounds Marshally to me.
🤨...just the IR-X?
Definitely 👍
I had to double check my playback speed a few times 😂

Need an IR JEL
for my tastes (hi gain) the X takes the cake here by a good margin...
Considering it's the dirty shirley/twin sister vs the BE100 I would hope so.

The IR-D has plenty of gain and sounds better overall.
You don’t need a lot of gain actually.
You guys make this pedal sound like poop.
We did it just for you
I am selling my JJ jr head and using my ir x
You’re kidding me right? The ir x is much tighter and open. Musicians we all are a bit fucked up!!!!!!!!

Lol tone wood only matters acoustically
Acoustic: of or relating to the sense or organs of hearing, to sound, or to the science of sounds. I'd have to agree.
