Exactly. The most important factor was totally ignored, which means there's no way to tell the difference ! lol Pretty pointless really. Seems more like it's for trying to sell it than actually doing a proper demo.
I picked up a an 84 JCM800 4010 combo last week, amp sounded good but needed more gain for my taste, reading on forums and watching this demo I went picked up a Mr Scary a couple days ago, gain on the Mr Scarry up about 1/2 to 2/3s and brought the gain down on the amp to around 2/3rds to 3/4 up "gives me some headroom on the front of the amp for different guitars, deep switch turned on and brought the bass down on the front of the amp opened up the low end, definitely more defined before turning to mud, the lows are very clear and punchy, best $350 I've spent on tone in 40 years of searching for better tone
All of this sounds fantastic! Like anything it's subjective to the individuals taste. I have two JCM 900 heads, #1) is an MKlll 50 watt, and from my understanding is left over parts from a 800, with the main difference being a diod clip for more gain, this one has EL34s. My second is a 100 watt dual reverb with winged C 6L6 tubes.Lynch mods Motor city music sells these exclusively and can be used in the 900 variant. I'm dying to try it in my MKIII, in my signal chain I have exotics EP clean boost and let me tell you, it's unadulterated pure uncolored clean boost. I'm considering either trying an 8 band or maybe MXRs eq, point being you really don't need an overdrive pedal but! It's flavored to ones taste. For modern metal I'm wanting to try out the attack overdrive pedal/attack freq, but apparently it's backordered. Super cool video man.
Nice amps! My very first customer back in 2019 actually bought the unit for his JCM 900 MKIII - an amp that I hadn’t even really had much familiarity with. I’ve since come to see that a lot of people like it in that circuit as they are able to get a better balance between the knobs up front to balance between the two clipping/OD types.
The Mr Scary one sounded the best to me. Its sound is more "focused" in the tonal spectrum compared to the other ones which were kind of flubby in the lows/low-mids department. Legendary Tones definitely hit it out of the proverbial park with the Mr Scary Hot Mod indeed!
It's exactly the same as the Lynch mod, just a different tube combo, I'll have to try that tube combo in mine, I got the LM when he released them back in 2021 :)
Damn, that sounded so tight and heavy even over the shitty UA-cam compression algorithm. I can only imagine how much better that sounds in the room. Liked and subbed. \m/ O_o \m/
My 50 watt JCM needs only a yellow OD and my Het Set. I did mod it with a few key diode changes, a good bias and a high quality cap upgrade. Killer gain and bottom end through a Recto cab with 3 greens and a hemp cone.
I had both the original Legendary and Mr Scary for my Marshall JMP 50 Watt 76 era. Both were great however I opted back to the stock amp with a slight mod and been happy since.
Hey Jason much love bro Bought a killertone... Saving up for a fortin but it looks like its going to be the sigil based on my finances... I'll have to grab an evil pumpkin pedal.. I wanted to ask you.. whats your favorite key to play in? Im enjoying alot of sabbath tuning right now ... C# standard rocks hard🦾🦾🦾🤘🤘🤘.. Much love my guy .. Ronnie Killertone
Got the Mr.Scary in my 86” 2203. Boss SD1 in front. Its absolutely amazing. Thanks for the proper vid. Love the tones youre gettin. Also, where did you clamp the ground? I opted for the tube cover spring on the el34 pwr
Great demo and great riffs as usual. Keep up the great clips! The Mr. Scary was the best overall, with the Lynch Mod coming in pretty close. I was not a fan of the V2.
A pedal pretty much does it for me in front of my amps but this is definitely a cool option. Do you think it would be enough on its own, without a pedal? I ask because I'm going to have to rig up a new practice setup somewhere.
It just depends what you're going for...I like higher gain tight thrash tones so I use it with a pedal to further that end. If you're doing 80s metal in standard tuning or something that doesn't require super tight bass then I think you'll be fine.
You just made me poorer than I was 5 minutes ago. There are still some of these for sale, but they are limited in quantity. I got the last remaining on on Reverb that had offers open + free shipping... But the prices will probably go up when these run out. Cool thing is.. I think this will also work in my Peavey VTM 120 that could use a little extra gain.

The older i get the more that i've started to prefer the sound of a ridiculously high gain Marshall JCM800 over the traditional 5150's and dual rectifiers. One thing i'd really love to try is sticking a Mesa Boogie 5 band graphic EQ in the FX loop. Coming from someone such as myself who much prefers the sound of my Randall RG solid state amp with an Exciter in the loop over said traditional high gain amplifiers, i've heard that since the Randall RG amplifiers were designed around hot rodded JCM800's that the face knobs on the amp pretty much work the same way as a JCM800, meaning that whenever you add treble on the amp, you're also adding upper mids, which has me curious as to how it would work in conjunction with a Mesa 5 band graphic in the loop.
That would sound tremendous I’d bet. I’ve got a reissue 2203x at home and should definitely try that with an EQ in the loop for some extra flexibility.
@@LegendaryTones i've tried it with a 6 band EQ on my Zoom MS50G stompbox multi FX unit and it worked pretty good for the frequencies that it was designed to affect. I'm still adamant on trying it with a Mesa Boogie 5 band graphic because of the specific frequencies that Mesa Boogie had designed the pedal to affect, but i'm mainly looking to try it out with an Orange Crush Pro 120 because of how much tighter those amps are with a 5 band graphic in the loop. You might be able to achieve some Master of Puppets or And Justice For All guitar tones if you wind up using a Mesa 5 band graphic, which i'm hoping i'll be able to accomplish with my Randall RG combo going into my Orange 4x12!
I have a brown Lynch one. In my 2015 2203X, I like a 12AU7 and an older 12AX7 long plate….feels like it’s the best combination to be thick, but still roll the guitar volume down for a decent clean. It's about frea@K1n& time we git sum mo' Frankhouser content. Been a bit sparse around here for a minute. Don't wanna seem desperate... but come on maaaan! Sounds rad, as usual. Really interesting product. Do you think that it offers an overall JCM-improvement over simply slamming the front end with a boost? You always seem to get such a great sound doing that. The palm mutes on this video do seem more patently "metal" than your other boosted JCM 800 vids. Would be interesting to hear this in an even less gainy amp, like an old 4 input Superlead or plexi. Thanks Jason!
That is a very good question....with the amount of new awesome modern boost pedals (Duality, Aesahaetter, Savage Drive, Hexdrive being my faves), it makes getting high gain tight tones out of old Marshalls much easier. I have always kinda felt that I preferred to just solely boost because it was more simple and these new modern boosts have so much tone shaping in them. plus a ton of output, that getting what I wanted out of an 800 was no problem. I realized with this new module it actually widens the possibilities of what i can do with the boosts and it actually opens up the possibilities of what boosts will work. I usually would not boost an 800 with the CMBOD but with the MS Module it works very well. So, that's where I am at with it currently. Yes, I can still boost just with a pedal, but using the module opens up quite bit of possibility with what boost I can use and gives me more tonal options.
The Mr Lynch one is surely nicer in the low end but I think the old one sounds just fine when boosted. I do like the girth of it with the mr scary with the deep switch on and almost makes me want to order it, but at this point I'm too attached to my old hmv2 😁 Curious to see how the old one will do with one 12AT7 tho
Interesting. I had the original one with a stock 2203 and it was very farty, no edge.Even boosts and ODs really didn't improve it much. I just about gave it away. Super nice guy though. I agreed with your first opinion of it you gave some time ago. Yours sounds much better. And yes, The Mr. Scary is pretty Killer.
I felt the same way about the first one. I actually told David my feeling and he modded it for me based on my feedback. Those mods basically became the Hot Mod 2 Evo version. That one was a big improvement but I still preferred just to boost my amps. This module is a big step forward. Actually makes the amp have a wider range of tones with or without a boost. Really digging it.
I noticed your master volume on the JCM is on 2 with the preamp and bass both on 7 or so. If I did that, my converters would be far into the red. The JCM is also extremely loud with these settings. So I guess my question is, what did you use to attenuate your signal to get a more recordable level?
Properly mic'd up with a good mic preamp and proper gain staging has no effect on converters. Just like it would had it been hitting tape back in the old days. There is no issue here at all with how loud I ran the amp because I mic'd it properly.
I think I would have got a lot more out of this demo if you would have given the stock amp sound vs each of these. At least it would given an approximation of the amount of clipping and saturation to a normal amp. I would have liked to hear it with either a clean boost, or a more transparent OD with a flatter EQ like a Timmy or a Blues driver for the same reason. I had Badass OD over a decade ago, and only for a few days because it didn't really have what I was looking for, but for the life of me I can't remember what it sounded like. I'm assuming it was Tube Screamer based circuit but I'm not sure.
On my own channel I have a very basic video showing some before and after with the Hot Mod V2 Evo in an 800 that’s stock. I will put the link here. Sometimes though it’s still going to be really tough to get all the nuances in a video demo between pedals or the mod - but I know we all do our best. ua-cam.com/video/FHKGi7o3n50/v-deo.html
@@LegendaryTones oh I'm well aware, I've building and repairing amps for 15 years. I'd go further than just the nuances that you'll miss, all you can really judge from listing to a recording is more or less the EQ curve; attack, resonance, sustain to a degree are lost. To be honest I think trying to make buying decision based on what you hear on a UA-cam video is a fools errand, especially with videos comparing two different, but similar pickups; there's so much compression happening between the sound the instrument makes all the way to it's terminus at your computer or headphones listing to it that you'd probably get a much better idea on the tone by having someone just describe it to you.
The only issue with the JCM 900 SLX is that it has a bridge rectifier BR3 chip inside that was under-spec’d - it often blew under load historically (without the mod) and the fix is to update it with one that has higher amp rating. IF your amp was updated, the mod would work fine in it. Many people love the mod in the JCM 900 MKIII 2100/2500 models but the SLX needs that BR3 update for the mod to work with it.
It won’t work in the Blues Jr unfortunately because it doesn’t use what’s called a cathode follower tone stack. A CF is what the mod needs to “see” to connect to and add its additional gain stage. Appreciate the interest but sorry for the not-so-good news on that amp.
Mr. scary in many ways. I know it's been tested but plugging this into a tube slot of a 3 or 4 thousand dollar amp would be a little scary. Sounded great though.
I understand the concern. If it helps, know that I’ve worked extensively and directly with the folks at Marshall during development. And my co-designer Andy Marshall of THD helped quite a bit to ensure all is safe, in addition to having Mike Soldano’s (original Hot Mod maker) blessing and support of the design.
FYI - at the time I made this video the manufacturer did not support the product being used in Mesa Rectifier amps.
That full mix was just pure bliss! Awesome tone!
Mr. Scary with boost sounds the best! I just got my 77 JMP 2203 and I think this one would make it breathe fire!

The only issue with the JCM 900 SLX is that it has a bridge rectifier BR3 chip inside that was under-spec’d - it often blew under load historically (without the mod) and the fix is to update it with one that has higher amp rating. IF your amp was updated, the mod would work fine in it. Many people love the mod in the JCM 900 MKIII 2100/2500 models but the SLX needs that BR3 update for the mod to work with it.
ive got a fender blues jr....would it work? it doesn't say if its a go or no go...hmmm
It won’t work in the Blues Jr unfortunately because it doesn’t use what’s called a cathode follower tone stack. A CF is what the mod needs to “see” to connect to and add its additional gain stage. Appreciate the interest but sorry for the not-so-good news on that amp.
Will it help a B-52 amp head?
Do you make one that sounds like Use Your Illusion era GNR?
You could easily dial it in that way I just didn't do that for this video.
Could I use these in a bugera 1990? If I could I feel like it would be killer. Pls let me know!! This might be what I’ve been looking for.
Send an email to david@legendarytones.com and he will let you know!
Mr. scary in many ways. I know it's been tested but plugging this into a tube slot of a 3 or 4 thousand dollar amp would be a little scary. Sounded great though.
I understand the concern. If it helps, know that I’ve worked extensively and directly with the folks at Marshall during development. And my co-designer Andy Marshall of THD helped quite a bit to ensure all is safe, in addition to having Mike Soldano’s (original Hot Mod maker) blessing and support of the design.
did they work in the 2525h?
Hello my Friend do you know i could use these mods one a 50Watt Vintage Modern?
Hmm...Send an email to david@legendarytones.com and he will know for sure.
Can you use a 12at7 in the V2 or the Lynch mod?
You can mix and match, but to my ears 12AT7 in the first position is best.
They all sound better without the boost.
Would this work with the marshall origin 20?
according to the link in the description it does not work with Origin series amps
Are these made by Roppoli?
I'm curious if anyone has ever installed multiple of these in the same JCM800 for ultimate gain or is it just my wildest dream lol
