  • During our Summer Solstice Splitboard Mountaineering Course Fryer and I were able to practice lowering a splitborder. This skill can be applied in a variety of terrain from sub alpine and below treeline to alpine using rock, snow or ice anchors. Which is not covered here.
This video shows a belay device being used for a smooth lower in steep terrain where the person being lowered is less comfortable in the terrain than the belayer. Another situation maybe when you are prospecting for suitable terrain or have uncertainty with your position to mountain hazards. When ropes are wet or with larger loads consider using a 3rd hand back up on the brake strand such as an autblock.
    Here’s the why:
✅ Adds Security in Steep Terrain or Firm Conditions
✅ Allows prospecting while route finding down steep rolling slopes
✅ One rider is less confident in the terrain
    Why not:
🛑 No solid secure tree, snow, ice, or rock anchor available
🛑 2nd rider is uncomfortable with the condition of the terrain
🛑 Rope isn't long enough for maneuver
🛑 Avalanche conditions are not predictable such as persistent or wet slabs
⚠️Caution: The use of ropes and anchors in consequential terrain requires an understanding of the limit of the skill you're using. What is your ability to retreat or problem solve complications? Are avalanche conditions understood or unknown? This video is not a substitute for real life training with an expert.
