I actually have a pf66 that slightly different from both of those in the video from Rock Auto. Has a plastic Ecore in it. Not sure if the other ones do.
I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500. It has the 4l60E Trans mission. 200° is the max you want to see on ANY GM Transmission. If you talk to a Transmission tech that rebuilds them they will tell you that. The reason your Transmission most likely gets to that temp is because gm sends the fluid through the radiator on the side tank. The coolant gets up to 210° normal operating temp. That's the problem. It's always been gm design flaw. Once I isolated my Transmission cooler off the radiator and installed a really good Trans cooler with fan I never seen over 180° towing a camper.
@RichardMitobe yea the radiator cooler design GM has been using years is a flaw. The overheating issues have nothing to do with a powergilde 2 speed Trans.
I've used 5w30 Mobil 1 in my 2010 5.3 1500 since day 1 and at 112,000 theres not a peep out of my engine, and no AFM issues, It doesn't burn a drop either. I'd rather pay for good oil vs having an engine failure. I also have a 2014 WRX with 56,000 that gets Mobil 1. Same deal , no issues. I use to be an oil is oil kinda guy but I have alot of faith in Mobil 1.
Mobil is a mid-grade amongst the synthetic lineups when it comes to the chemistry and components. It and supertech are very close in chemistry. Mobil supplies a lot of the base stock to Warren Industries (supertech). But, engines don't require Gucci boutique oils, so Mobil works plenty good provided it's changed appropriately.
you may be interested in reading my response as we have same truck, I have never in 55 years ever hurt a motor and I am OCD about maintenance. I think mobil 1 is fine and didnt play a role in GM's stupidity, but I went back to my original favorite Valvoline full syn after engine replacement and AFM delete mod, I guess a bit gun shy LOL. Lets face it I was traumatized when that lifter seized and flattened my cam and laid out a smoke screen on the interstate.

My old 17 2.7 Ecoboost ran what I thought was warm too, guess these new Turbo engines just run hotter both engine and transmission. On my 23 2.7 ecoboost I got the from PPF it’s like a plastic film covering the front of truck, think it really helps with chips. You do a great job on your videos always enjoy them. Try Pennzoil Platinum, I think a warm as our trucks run might not be a bad ideal!
Let us know how that works out, it’s supposed to be real good oil. But, I wonder how that would do, to Ford engines that have the Kevlar belt at the bottom of the oil pan.
Over 100k miles on my 2020 GMC Sierra 2.7 without any issues, oil changed every 4000 miles. Had a emissions sensor replaced under warranty and I’m on my third set of tires now 👍
I have seen enough videos on modern trucks to know when my 2003 needs a new motor soon that is the route I am going. I was quoted 6 grand for a new engine including all the outer parts like ignition coils, alternator, starter, and water pump all new. Body and interior still in good condition and that is a lot cheaper than a new one. Even with a new tranny its way cheaper than a new one and they last easy 20 years.
Definitely looks like Champ Labs - built the new filter for more oil flow. More & larger oil inlet holes - due to the Cheezy paper media. I will stay with the Purolator PL11424 PureOne & A-Premium (Metal Core) & synthetic media EOF10351-C from Amazon - Totally Sealed & wrapped box = very high quality filter. Did notice @ 55-70mph oil psi running pretty consistently around 30psi. (When oil temp is between 195-210*F) I will stay with Mobil 1 Euro FS 0W-40 & PureOne & 5K mile OCI - basically changing the oil & filter - Once before winter & Once before Summer (Nov - May).
Extended life oil pretty much has more detergents and dispersants, the detergents that they use now is to protect against LSPI in Turbocharged, gasoline direct injected engines, calcium detergents are the main cause so they reduces calcium and added magnesium along with the calcium. And the antiwear additives are a slightly different chemical make up because the old style zinc was poisoning the Catalytic Converters, so they changed to a different type of zinc. API-SP oils are just better balanced for the antiwear, detergent additives, and the zinc is more effective.
110k miles before I traded the 2.7 in for another. Oil changes all around 7.5k. A couple slightly over. Can’t say I’m a fanboy but not one issue. 🤷🏻♂️
old one looks like a metal inner cage. New one might be Ecore design but without the metal cover over the holes. ACDelco has had diff designs for a long time. Originally Champ Labs made the Ecore for Delco
I stopped buying PF66 filters when I changed my oil this spring and started using PPE's extended filter they sell for the 3.0L Duramax. The 3.0L Duramax also takes a PF66 from factory so the PPE filter screws right on to the L3B. They're a bit more money but I'll gladly pay it for the ability to hold an extra quart of oil. Some get paranoid about possibly having higher oil pressure because of the 10 micron filtering element in it. But so far I have not experienced that. My oil pressure just hovers slightly under where it sits with the factory filter. The only time it peaks with high pressure is during the winter which the factory filter also did. Once the oil heats up it drops to normal operating pressure.
@@ryguy151 Indeed. I'd like to continue using them if possible. But if I can't get my hands on one again due to funds then I have found a decent substitute until I can that's a bit cheaper. I like the added capacity even if it might only be a half quart more. :)
Hi, Yes it did! It was a really simple failure of a fuel injector. The problem was that I was so far from home. The injectors are simple enough and cheap enough that, had it happened at home, I would have just fixed it at the house. But, being 500 miles away and the parts being on back order, that is what happened there. Do I recommend this truck? Yes, 100% yes. I think that the three most reliable engines in half tons right now are the 2.7l GM, 5.6l Nissan, the 5.0l V8 from Ford, the two EcoBoost engines from Ford seem pretty good too. I wouldn’t touch any of the Ram’s right now. Hey, this sounds like a good video topic. Thanks for the idea. Have a great day.

The torque converter needs a service and the timing is off on the transmission along with the front right motor mount being bad…imo the motors are good in these strokes, but the transmission and some of the other parts are cheap
Too hot for a Nissan. However most vehicles this is normal temperature ranges. Usually goes up to line 230 F. You oil will make a big difference with the temperature and how hot the engine and or transmission runs. So make sure you have the right oild for both.
timing chain rattle or valve clatter after oil change? brief 1-2 seconds until it builds pressure. do you flood it first before starting or just start and wait for pressure? hold gas pedal down all the way it wont crank over, but build pressure before starting. idk
The smell is more than likely gas in the oil. These small turbo charge engines get gas contamination due to the high pressures these engines are under. I have an ecoboost engine and the first time i changed the oil myself i was horrified at the smell. During that interval the engine saw some pretty tough duty. Was changing every 5000 but didn’t get to it till around 6200. I wont let that ever happen again gonna be changing the oil in my 2.7 f150 and our 2.7 colorado at 3500-4000 for now on. Nice review! I test drove the Silverado with the 2.7. Very quick off the line, quite responsive. I couldn’t wrap my head around pulling a travel trailer with a 4 cylinder turbo. As well as knowing that engine had just come out in the Silverado. Bought a Nissan Titan instead. The better warranty helped in that decision. No regrets, love the Titan. I’m happy the 2.7 has done well for you!! Seeing real world mpg #’s is reassuring. I do, however, love the sound of the 5.6L ! I pay for it at the pump though!!! I hit 21mpg once.
Very Nice! I have strongly considered a Titan XD in the past. I am going to be featuring the Titan 5.6l in a video soon. I am working on the script now, but it will basically be one of the top recommended trucks available now, in my opinion. Nissan is crushing it with the Titan and Frontier right now!
@@jeremsgarage It’s a shame the Titan and Titan XD are being discontinued. The 5.6 is a time tested engine. The 4.0 was as well. I can honestly say that, as I had a 2018 frontier. From what I understand, the 4.0’s replacement is doing good. I look forward to the video!
I can't believe all of the closed minded people on this vid. I was extremely sceptical on the 2.7 when I first looked at the truck, but when I drove it it all went away. This will tow way better than my last GMC with a 6.2, it was always screaming and the 2.7 just purs down low. Haters gonna hate, and that's OK. I am very happy with my choice.
Do not trust that brake wear percentage. 2021 with 59000 miles and the inside rear pads were toast. I was told for whatever reason with the electronic parking brake your rear pads will be changed 2 to 1 over front pads. The outside rear pad was fine... just the inside pad was almost gone.
That newer PF66 is OK to use, except AC-Delco does try to cheapen oil filters too much for my taste. Example: AC-Delco uses cheap nitrile rubber ADBV, and I insist on silicone rubber for durability and pliability in cold weather. Long story short, here are very good alternatives which are better-built: MicroGard Select MSL10351 (must say "select" in the name, not their regular line), Fram Ultra XG12447 (or Fram Titanium FS12447), or NAPA Gold 100351 , and Purolator Boss PBL11424.. google any of them for where to get... walmart, auto part stores, maybe amazon.

Lucas products are crap...all you're doing is changing the chemical composition of the oil to something that's probably less effective. I read something a few years back that did an analysis on a Lucas oil additive. It turned out to be essentially a bottle of 10w30 grade motor oil...no "special" additives, etc. If you MUST add stuff to your oil, trans, etc. there are better choices.
if you change oil every 3,000 miles you are wasting Money! using the required synthetic Dexos-2 oil the recommended oil change is 5,000 to 10,000 miles or once every 12 months. 5,000 TO 6,000 MILES IS PERFECTLY FINE.

I actually have a pf66 that slightly different from both of those in the video from Rock Auto. Has a plastic Ecore in it. Not sure if the other ones do.
Wix or Napa gold filters is what I’ve been using on my chev
me too yep, napa gold on my L3B
i work at a chevy dealership and the pf66 and pf64 were redesigned for better oil flow
edit: i think the pf63 was also changed but i cant remember
The 8 speed behind these turbomaxes isn’t a powerglide with extra neutrals
@RichardMitobe yea the radiator cooler design GM has been using years is a flaw. The overheating issues have nothing to do with a powergilde 2 speed Trans.
Nice video! Just picked at a 24' Canyon. Hoping the 2.7 lasts.
Congrats! It should serve you very well! Thank you for watching my video!
The 2.7t is a good design. Use synthetic oil and try to change it before 30% or no more than 7500 miles. Never go more than 6 months.
They have forged internals and are built very strong. Use good oil and you will enjoy your truck for years.
My 2024 Canyon came with 2 separate oil leaks including the rear main seal. Was in the shop for almost 3 weeks. Hopefully its fixed
The paint on that hood is fine. It just needs touched up.
Thanks for watching! I got to get some touch up paint.
@@Resistculturaldecline Its just my opinion. Thanks for your as well
I have same truck same year. No problems either. @greggamandabarkus4235
you may be interested in reading my response as we have same truck, I have never in 55 years ever hurt a motor and I am OCD about maintenance.
@bengregory3410 I had a guy who is a tuner hook up his laptop to my truck and turned off the 4/8 afm. Truck just stays in 8 cyl. Did not hurt gas mileage and truck sounds and runs great. 2010 5.3 z71
Switch to valvoline restore and protect
Let us know how that works out, it’s supposed to be real good oil. But, I wonder how that would do, to Ford engines that have the Kevlar belt at the bottom of the oil pan.
Been using the Acdelco Ultraguard gold filters on my 2.7. Part number UPF66. They have a metal core inside instead of plastic and seem better made.
@@Klankster thanks for the tip. I’ll order one. It’s about time for my next oil change.
Over 100k miles on my 2020 GMC Sierra 2.7 without any issues, oil changed every 4000 miles. Had a emissions sensor replaced under warranty and I’m on my third set of tires now 👍
Looks like better oil flow on new one
Let it flow let it flow let it flow
That would be my guess as well.
That was my first thought - the new one should flow much better.
Dealer does my oil change. Ill ask them about oil filter re design. I doubt it will change performance in any way.
The thing with the paint is if you invest in paint protection film when you buy it the rock chips aren’t so bad.
I always use OEM oil filters. One time and one time only i used a High end oil filter and it leaked. Back to OEM 135,000 km and still going strong.
Kind of interesting how the oil pressure gauges go so much higher now
I have seen enough videos on modern trucks to know when my 2003 needs a new motor soon that is the route I am going.
(When oil temp is between 195-210*F)
I will stay with Mobil 1 Euro FS 0W-40 & PureOne & 5K mile OCI - basically changing the oil & filter - Once before winter & Once before Summer (Nov - May).
What weight oil do you run....thx

Thanks for video. GM recommends a "Dexos1, Gen2 synthetic oil. Looking into a Silverado, or F-150, 2.7L.
Those paint chips are normal. You should be using a touch up pen if it bugs you!
Get a hood guard like I did saved the 💩 out of it plus they have bumper covers that make them look cool
Nice! Do you have some links?
old one looks like a metal inner cage. New one might be Ecore design but without the metal cover over the holes. ACDelco has had diff designs for a long time. Originally Champ Labs made the Ecore for Delco
Yes! You are right! The old had a metal core. The new has an open plastic core.
I used the PPE filters on my 21 3.0 and it held a 1/2 a quart more. They are good filters tho
@@ryguy151 Indeed. I'd like to continue using them if possible. But if I can't get my hands on one again due to funds then I have found a decent substitute until I can that's a bit cheaper. I like the added capacity even if it might only be a half quart more. :)
Is 2.7 i4 reliable? Didnt your truck left you stranded? would you recommend this truck?
23mpg AVERAGE over an oil interval is amazing. I have '20 Custom w/ the 4.3 and it averages your "worst" 16 and small change.
Is the 2.7 turbo good for towing a 2 horse trailer bumper pull? Usually only haul only one horse. Is a short bed ok?
Perfect! It would do good.
i bought my wife a new chevy trailblazer 2.5 years ago and im surprised how many chips are on the front of the hood. And she almost never drives on the highway. i feel like the paint job is bad
So I got a pf66 that's slightly different from both of those. Part number 12727115. Its got 8 circle holes on the top and the threaded part is different from both of those. This one has the plastic ecore in it. I bought a case of them off Rock Auto about year ago. Seems they have several different manufacturers making them.
The PF64 I believe did get bypass bumped up to 20psi IIRC, about 4 yrs-5 yrs ago . I don't know about the PF66
The new filter looks like a SuperTech. I think Super Tech is a good filter.
Good catch. I'm going to grab a SuperTech filter and check that out. Thanks for watching.
Supertech and AC Delco are both made by Champion Labs
@@wendellmullan5327 that is good to know! I’ll see if I can grab a comparable SuperTech filter for Silva and see how it compares to a PF66

The new oil filter is a better design because the oil return holes are larger and more of them.

I started having issues with the transmission now they’re telling me the valve in the transmission is bad.
So make sure you have the right oild for both.
timing chain rattle or valve clatter after oil change? brief 1-2 seconds until it builds pressure. do you flood it first before starting or just start and wait for pressure? hold gas pedal down all the way it wont crank over, but build pressure before starting. idk
I'll have to look into that. It would be great if there was a way to make the engine prime before first start after an oil change.
fill filter with oil then install
GM just updated the 66s for “better flow”
The smell is more than likely gas in the oil. These small turbo charge engines get gas contamination due to the high pressures these engines are under. I have an ecoboost engine and the first time i changed the oil myself i was horrified at the smell. During that interval the engine saw some pretty tough duty. Was changing every 5000 but didn’t get to it till around 6200. I wont let that ever happen again gonna be changing the oil in my 2.7 f150 and our 2.7 colorado at 3500-4000 for now on. In the summer doing alot of towing prolly do it at 3000.
Thank you for the Information! I'll make sure to check the inside pad more carefully when I rotate the tires again.
Update: guess ill start changing oil myself. Dealers calendar is down across the nation. Ill rotate tires myself to.
Thank you for this information. I am buying up a few filters to cut open and inspect for a video. This is very helpful.
I do oil change every 3k miles don't care what no-one says. I'm at 58k no problems pray to god 🙏 and she's a good worthy road trip worrior always on the road only think I do recommend is adding the oil treatment fluid from Lucas 1ltr each oil change and you should be solid unless you get a dud
Lucas products are crap...all you're doing is changing the chemical composition of the oil to something that's probably less effective. I read something a few years back that did an analysis on a Lucas oil additive. It turned out to be essentially a bottle of 10w30 grade motor oil...no "special" additives, etc. If you MUST add stuff to your oil, trans, etc. there are better choices.
definitely not junk, oil needs to be changed every 3K regardless of what GM says
if you change oil every 3,000 miles you are wasting Money! using the required synthetic Dexos-2 oil the recommended oil change is 5,000 to 10,000 miles or once every 12 months. 5,000 TO 6,000 MILES IS PERFECTLY FINE.
@bobhirdes6725 no way man. once the oil turns black its no longer protecting the engine parts. most oil is toast after 4K or 5K miles, especially in a turbo engine

Me too. Not into little, forced air, hot running, high rpm, engines trying to be truck engines. They make it sound good with “peak torque” numbers which practically redlines these little things. @@GLOCKCOPG23 lol. Yea almost nothing you just said applies to this 2.7l. It makes ALL its tq and HP under 2,000 RPM. It does not need to redline to make power. You have this confused with a V8. From 2016 to 2021, GM used a trans cooler thermostat with a full open temp of 194F, then in 2021 they came out with a 158F full open thermostat.
