Thank you for the rev. I waited for Macys to have its sale to purchase one @25% off, so I got the 001 for $257.00 before taxes. At that price I can ignore the QC problems.
It wasn’t aligned when setting the time or after setting. I let the watch run as some others suggested and it never aligned correctly. This is a case of an improperly aligned stack-which is definitely a Seiko thing
Trust me, I’ve reviewed plenty of GMTs and am aware of some of the quirks they can have. There’s a difference between behavior a gmt might have and not lining the hands up correctly when putting them on. Seiko can’t align a bezel to save their lives so I’m not surprised here. Like I said in my original comment, I tried setting the time, spinning the gmt, changing the date, letting it run, etc etc. there’s no fixing an incorrectly aligned stack (without taking the hands off)
I've seen other reviews that say that this movement has a quirk that causes the GMT hand to fall out of alignment when you set GMT time but will eventually work itself back into position after you set the time or an hour or so has passed. Is this also true with your example?
I set the time on this one multiple times, spun the GMT around, and let the watch run for days - it never lined up. I think the hands were not set correctly here. I COULD pull the hands and realign them, but who wants to run that risk on their $500 watch?
It is issue with GMT’s. I have the same gmt and the same problem with alignment, but when it runs for day it aligns itself. Ming watches had the same problem.
Not disagreeing with you, but this is not something I have experienced before, especially over the course of however many GMTs I have reviewed over the past several years. I've certainly heard of alignment issues and that issue happens when the hands are stacked. I have asked a few others who have the 5 GMT and all but one said their alignment was fine out of the box...looks like it might not be widespread, but my sample size is small
Not gonna just swap out a bezel insert to create a "world diver" look. Case, bezel, bezel insert and chapter ring are all different than the SKX standard. I can see Seiko selling a lot of 4R34's to modders and very few SSK's. Price on these is going to drop like a rock.
This is an okay watch for usd 200. Over that it's not worth it. Thanks for the honest review. Seen others pretending the watch was fantastic. Well, it isn't.
@fensterfred OK, what I like of this watch is the SKX design, the GMT feature, the color palette, and the bold design of the GMT hand. What I don’t like (and think it makes it not worth the asking price) is: lack of sapphire lack of ceramic bezel friction bezel pressed clasp non screw-down crown poorly finished hands & poorly printed date wheel (see 2:18 & 4:26) I don’t like either the see-through caseback, but I realize that’s not a flaw, obviously, just an ill-advised design decision (that adds to the thickness of the watch) when the movement is as ugly to see as this is. I don’t have an issue with this being a “caller’s GMT” but the misalignment of the GMT hand in this particular watch is not extraordinary as we know from experience (in another video about this model someone reported a misaligned chapter ring), so buyers must be aware the QC of their specific watches will be the luck of the draw. My suggestion of usd 200 as a reasonable price may be an exaggeration, but I still think this watch is not worth the nearly 500 they ask. You will soon see die-hard Seiko fans modding this watch - that is making it to be what should have been from the start. If you deduct from the asking price what those modders will spend in improving the watch (sapphire, proper clasp), you will get not too far from my estimated value. Not sure my opinion carries more weight - it’s just my opinion after all :-)
@@Xoan-Diaz I see where you’re coming from but considering the price of the normal 5kx, it’s really not much of a premium. It’s a 200 dollar difference and you get a better bracelet and the new gmt movement. In a few months this will be attainable new for about 350-400 just like any other seiko 5.
Seikos are like AKs...loosely put together and not exactly accurate, but they run and run, no matter the environment.
This is the best Seiko analogy I've ever heard

I keep seeing people say Macys is an AD. However, the two Macy's stores in my area do not have a single Seiko watch for sale. 😢

In the time setting mode it'll be aligned that's just a Seiko thing . It works perfectly. Don't be so quick to criticize

If you want no QC issues. Seiko makes them. They're called Grand Seiko

If I kept one of these in my collection I would definitely swap a dive bezel on it
The only thing that bugs me with this watch is the fact that it doesn't have saphire glass, other than that a pretty solid timepiece
