- Exploring the History of Winter Gardens in Blackpool, uncovering all of it's history and Hidden Secrets.
In this video we look at the Great Wheel, located at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. It opened in 1896 and closed in 1928 after 32 years. At over 220ft high, it towered over Blackpool along with the Tower. We also take a look at the earliest form of a Steel Rollercoaster located at the Winter Gardens and known as Les Montagnes Russes, it opened in 1902.

Why was there such wonderful designs made, that were then taken away. I know money was a big part of it but still I can't believe what treasures have been lost. When you look at what's been replaced most constructions are not as interesting or rememberable especially now. Thank you for bringing the history back to life for us.

What I would give to ride on that Rollercoaster.... So much history in one place, would hate to see the "maintenance bill" for the Blackpool Tower as it sits right on the ocean. Again Darren, your fades and narration are the best.

Fantastic videos, I am so glad I found these. I served in the fire service in Blackpool and was lucky enough to go in many of the areas you have been given access to, behind the scenes reveals many hidden gems and old history of Blackpool, just like the original house frontage hidden in the winter gardens.

I've really enjoyed these videos on the Winter Gardens, living in Preston I've visited there many times I remember going with my aunt as a kid in the early 80s when it was full of amusements and rides, and then going every year to the Rebellion festival later, the building has always fascinated me with it's different layers and stages of history, It's fun to trace the old buildings on google earth including the old chimney thats now stuck on the corner of the Opera House.
I was wondering if you had any plans to do a video about the Alhambra Blackpool, I know it's gone now and well before all our times but it was another very interesting building with many attractions like the Winter Gardens and the Tower. I do enjoy you're videos, like your friend Mr Zero you have a knack for making it interesting.

You’re correct regards the carriage at Out Rawcliffe, it was a cafe many years ago then it was converted to a summer room. A family member had a caravan on site and I was lucky enough to have a look inside. Also, when you did the coaster,I thought that was going to be dated earlier, however I was probably confusing myself. In 1884 there was a narrow gauge railway installed in the winter gardens, this quickly fell into disrepair and was renovated by Michael Holroyd Smith, once running he invited the newly formed council tramway committee to view it, it became the catalyst for the Blackpool tramway. I would imagine it didn’t last very long and I’m sure this was in the same location as the coaster.
Also out of interest, the winter gardens generated their own electricity prior to Blackpool installing a public network in 1893, that’s a whole other story and of particular interest to me. There may be evidence of the early installation in the basements, if not of the pre 1893 installation, then there could be some remains of the 1893 installation which reputedly consisted of 2000 electric lights.

Excellent, I’ll look forward to that, I’m more interested in the municipal electricity arrangement but if I remember correctly the Winter Gardens did revert to their own generation for a spell, to allow the municipal works to take on more customers c.1894-ish

Hi Darren, top notch watching again. The steel roller coaster would have been very noisy too as it probably had steel wheels too and maybe caused upsets in the various theatres and halls around it. It was the same with the modern solo 'flying' ride that was constructed at the TV set of Coronation Street tours. Even though it probably had rubber wheels on the running gear it interfered with the outdoor filming. It didn't last long and was soon dismantled. I think there was a legal battle to get the cash back from the rides manufacturer. Cheers DougT in Mancs.

@@AdventureMe cool. These multi part series are really good as you can really get into the details. I love the Blackpool ones in particular. The train line series is good and I think distracted me from wither gardens but then ep6 came up in my recommended even though I have watched it so I went looking for the latest part and saw you mention part 9 in thr comments.
I was told that one of the gondolas ended up as a bus shelter in Lytham near Green Drive Golf Club

I remember my Grandmother telling me about how when she went on the big wheel it broke down and they were stuck on it for hours. They sent sandwiches up on big sticks.

It is on an old farm in Pilling which is just before Fleetwood. Its amongst a few caravans and has been converted to a shalet. You wouldn't know from the outside but inside it's obvious.
