      Excellent Darren as always. But most surprised to see you in my home town.
      I am a "Sandgrown'un", I E born in the town and have had a lifelong fascination with local history. I am still a heritage guide for the town, authorised by Blackpool Council to do tours of the town and we used to do them of this unbelievably wonderful building.
      As many have already said in your comments, most people don't give it a second look, but it is utterly stunning.
      The Empress ballroom, in my book, is even better than the Tower Ballroom. Heresy to some, but it genuinely is.
      I also do a "Hidden Heritage" tour, that explores some of the other incredible hidden gems and lost stories of this unique and amazing town. If you'd ever like to know any more about them, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
      In the meantime, again many thanks and another excellent job as always. Cheers.

      If you get the chance, get the techs to take you down into the basement areas - apparently it's a total labyrinth of tunnels and rooms, many of which were sealed off decades ago - every now and then they open another one up and find all manner of historical goodies stashed away...

    I used to work here as a chef (mainly in the empress grill) and saw a lot of the hidden spaces including the backstage area above the kitchen ceiling and the changing rooms at the bottom of the stairs for the old stage which are still used by staff to access the kitchen without disturbing the customers dining. The white lady's from the front entrance were still in one of the walkways of the celler along with lots of other hidden spaces that are now only used by the staff and for storage including stable housing which was a restaurant at some point and an old bar/tearoom.

    The architect who designed, and the planners who passed the plans for, that conference box should be taken out and dropped off the end of the pier. Absolutely no empathy with the building they are attaching to.
    Great video Darren, thanks for bringing us this great insight into the Winter Gardens, I now know why my grandmother raved about it when she went on her holidays there in the 1950's, unfortunately I was far too young to appreciate the design and beauty of the building then!

    • @AdventureMe
      @AdventureMe  2 роки тому +2

      Yes I agree it's not the best thing to be added onto the building.

    • @DrivermanO
      @DrivermanO 2 роки тому +6

      I agree, its appallling! It is just lazy design - it would have been easy enough to design a more appropriate building. Architect? Really? My 3 year old granddaughter can draw a square box!

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT 2 роки тому +3

      The idea of the conference centre being a bland box was so as not to detract from the original parts of the Winter Gardens. It basically had to be like that or it would never have been constructed. It's there to be basic and functional and be seen as a separate part of the building. Inside is pretty sparse too, which allows clients to "decorate" the space as they see fit for whichever event they are holding, yet they can still make full use of both the Empress Ballroom and Opera House venues as they are linked directly to the conference centre.
      I detest the look of it personally, but if it brings in more business then that can only be seen as a positive for the rest of the complex.

    • @spacemanclips
      @spacemanclips 2 роки тому +1

      @@OrganMusicYT Looking on the bright side, it will have a 25 year lifespan and will be pulled down most likely within your lifetime. In my opinion most of the 1930's additions should also be torn down.

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT 2 роки тому +3

      @@spacemanclips So you would advocate for the demolition of one of, if not the most complete, finest and unaltered examples of streamline moderne cinema and theatre design from the 1930s in the country? Not to mention the last new Wurlitzer pipe organ in the country, the newest example of a Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ anywhere in the World that remains in its original home?
      Also, it's the 1930s additions that allow the venue to function as it does today and turn a profit.

  • @OrganMusicYT
    @OrganMusicYT 2 роки тому +9

    For those complaining about the new conference centre building. The site was previously a crumbling 1930s two-level staff car park. I'm pretty certain that in the planning process, it was outlined that the new conference centre had to be a neutral part of the building so that it did not detract from the historic fabric of the rest of the building. Basically, it was never meant to be liked. It was there purely to serve the purpose of adding a new state of the art conference space that people could use.

    • @infurious5748
      @infurious5748 2 роки тому

      IMHO it of anything but "neutral". It's a giant un-attractive box that is a huge distraction from the beautiful architecture of the historic buildings. It looks very out of place, like the archtect was told to design the cheapest box he could to fill the space.

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT 2 роки тому

      @@infurious5748 As I said, it wasn't designed to be liked. All it is there for is to do it's job and bring in revenue. When the time comes that the conference centre building has reached the end of it's life then it won't be a loss architecturally to the rest of the building, and I doubt people would campaign to save it as it isn't of architecural or cultural significance.

    Been many times to the Winter Gardens when it hosts the Rebellion festival. It's a very special place which will always hold very special memories for me. I've had some of the best times of my life in there and I can hardly wait to return hopefully later this year.

    Very interesting, I actually lived 100 yards away on Coronation St. Most of my childhood in the 50s and 60s and I never realised the beauty of the building I'm now 68yrs old and because of this video I'll be taking a bus ride into Blackpool to have a look around the Winter Gardens myself. Thanks for sharing the video with us.

    i was in there in 1980 and the place was damp, cold and dropping to bits, peeling paint, crumbling plaster, and rusty girders, glad to see the council had the sense to renovate and not tear it down,
    A well made video, I like the image-overs from yesteryear, better than the most youtube postings. .

    Brilliant piece, will look forward to the second instalment. Thinking of set designers, they are incredible at improvising. The Spanish Hall and the Galleon Bar remind me of the recent set for Gentleman Jack at Shibden Hall in Halifax; walls and outbuildings appeared where there previously weren’t any; all built from wood and plaster etc. and entirely convincing. It’s quite an art in itself!
