Anne Boleyn was not executed where you say in video - that area with current memorial is a Victorian guess-a-ment. Anne was executed in front of a large crowd in the open area between The White Tower and the modern crown jewels house.

I believe the Queens House wasn't built until 1540, four years after Anne Boleyn's execution so she never saw it. She was held in the Queens Lodgings, built by Henry which were in the private area over by the gardens which are now part of the New Armoury.

1533 A.D. Your video shows Anne Boleyn taken to the Queen's House.
According to current research & this book she instead was taken to the Royal Apartments:
In the Footsteps of Anne Boleyn - The Tower of London
by Sarah Morris & Natalie Grueninger
    The Royal Apartments-
From Thursday 29 May to Saturday 31 May 1533 and from Tuesday 2 May to Friday 19 May 1536, Anne was accommodated in the queen’s lodgings, part of the royal apartments, which were situated in the south-east corner of the Tower. She was not, as a Victorian myth later propagated, accommodated during her imprisonment in the Queen’s House.

I still wonder why 1 of the cornertowers of the Tower is round while the other 3 are square, does anyone know the reason for this?
I’d like to suggest the area Whitehall/ Parliament for an animation.

After watching this video, it makes sense to me why it didn't get burned down in the Great Fire of London of 1666 because with the amount of gun powder or black powder we call in modern times that was stored in there. They would of prioritize saving the city from an explosion that if the fire reaches the tower, you got a 17th century nuclear weapon.

  • @PaulBennett-e2u

3:42 it's not true that London was defeated by William - he secured it without a fight by guaranteeing its "traditional rights and favours".
The City of London wasn't conquered. The reason the White Tower is so imposing is to remind London it was in William's power to change that.

“The UN has accused Britain of failing to protect the Palace of Westminster and Tower of London from skyscrapers and office blocks.

Endangered? Nobody would ever have the balls to do anything to the Tower. It's part of Londons and England's history for nearly 1000years.

Gunpowder didn't make castles obsolete the civil wars prove that.

    • @bob_the_bomb4508
      @bob_the_bomb4508 2 місяці тому

Gunpowder did mean that traditional castles with curtain walls were vulnerable. Even by the time of Henry VIII the ‘Italian Trace’ style of fortifications were the new standard. This includes ‘star fortifications’ with features like scarps, glacis, belvederes and ravelins.
These features were late to be introduced into Britain. Indeed, it’s believed that Deal Fort was a fraud perpetrated on Henry VIII by an Italian architect who’d never seen Italian Trace fortifications. You can see elements of these ‘modern’ fortifications added at Dover.
There wasn’t much point in suffering the major expense of completely re-modelling British fortifications because by the time of the Stuarts the country was politically unified.
That traditional castles still existed by the civil war was more because it was cheaper to keep them than to knock them down.
They were a tactical obstacle in the Civil War but comparatively easy to suffer a ‘practical breach’ from artillery
The Italian Trace did arrive in Britain but only with the ‘Palmerston Forts’ in the 19c.
Interestingly, the lesson of not leaving old style fortifications intact in a country in the event of civil war was learnt by the French. The famous French military engineer, Vauban, was charged with destroying old curtain wall castles throughout France as well as building new star fortifications on France’s borders.

I believe the last political prisoner to be held (for a short while) was Rudolf Hess. However the castle was still the depot regimental HQ for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for a while after the war, so at one point the Kray Twins were also detained there during their national service.
