Join myself and @Martin Zero as we venture high up onto Saddleworth Moor in the hunt of a mysterious and strange tunnel. We take a look inside and try to solve the mystery of the syphon tunnel and why it is there. We also take a look at the surrounding area, including the Dovestone and Chew Reservoirs and an old abandoned tram road.
An amazing feat of engineering and labour. We rely so much on what the Victorians did for us for our water and sewage and transport. Thanks for making the journey and showing us this.
That was great. Thoroughly enjoyed that trek. Thank for taking us to places we would never ever see ourselves. Really appreciate your bravery .well done to you Martin and James.
Lovely area around here, i explored the nearby Fletchers paper mill last year, closed since 2001 and left the same ever since! you can see it at 0:29 on the left in the background
Your videos are just showing people how beautiful that part of England actually is .. Now you can say that you actually went through that very long tunnel with the pipe lol. I enjoyed thank you for sharing your experiences with us all ..
Love this place, great place for a walk. There used to be a derelict house at the top of the track , just under the dam wall. Great vlog mate a cracking intro.
You're correct. The 2 valves at the pipe in the tunnel are air leek valves to prevent an airlock in the higher placed pipe in the tunnel. The temperature in tunnels, caves etc. (without traffic) is constant at 12C. Nice video!
Great video! Having watched Martin's video, I was wondering when you'd post yours. I love how you marry up archival photographs with the modern terrain. I find it very satisfying - especially if, in the interim, the landscape has undergone dramatic change of use. Thanks for sharing! Nice one. And top marks for continuing your piece to camera despite having a snowball on your head! 👍
Uh oh not them two again haha :) only 15 mins away from my birth place of oldham :) It would cost a lot but worth restoring that tramway. It would make a good tourist attraction
Very interesting, back then they certainly took pride in their workmanship, the stonework on those portals is magnificent, by the way, Salts mill has been out of bounds this week as they have been filming the new Gentleman Jack , Saltaire as you know lends itself to period dramas with its wonderful architecture, rambling ... anyway, I enjoy the Martin collaborations.
I love to jog up to Chew reservoir and back down again. Theres also WW2 plane wreckages dotted around the area as when the planes hit the peat they just sunk into the soil and where left there. Theres also the stone cut shepherds hut which was chiseled into the rock face.
I’ve just watched the Martin zero video and then I’ve watched yours so well done to both of you for making them almost different and both very interesting
You walking through the tunnel reminds me of me and my mates crawling through a tunnel under the M62 motorway when we were nippers. That area of Northern England is sometimes referred to as "the Lake District in the heart of Saddleworth" because of its spectacular beauty. It's one of my favourite areas for hiking.
You have truly become quite the film maker. Quite a professional job, liked the intro and liked the editing. Thanks for yet another excellent film of your journey.
I was here a few months ago - although i went the other way around which starts at that old quarry - theres some really interesting rock formations called the Trinnacles further on. You end up climbing a big waterfall on the way up,i think it was something like a 20 mile trek and it was dense fog hehe.
( Some sort of a fancy man hole) 🤣..haha. Great video, and great company. plenty of effort with a great Climax. Part of my Sunday viewing 😉 . Cheers Grant.
There's light at the end of the tunnel so why is it taking so bloody long to get to it!!!!!! All that beautifully built stonework and no one to appreciate it, thanks for contorting yourself to show us. Great overlays and the opening shot to the Simpsons!!👍🏻😧
Thanks Darren for your version of the explore, I have watched both MZ's and yours now and both are good with different elements to them. Bet the brew and biccies came in handy to revive the spirit's. Always a long running debate on MZ/James brew making ability, skimmed versus semi/full fat milk. Cheers matey, DougT in Mancs
Fantastic loved it, certainly would not go in it. 😱 how long did it take you to get through the tunnel ? I’ve seen an explore through here, he found items on the pipe inside re spell casting and you found the sheep’s scull 😱 🤔
How's your back now, Darren? Thanks for adding the photos of the area from days gone by. This time, I have preferred your explore to Martin's version. Perhaps because it's much more concise. I am imagining your silence, walking through the tunnel, during Martin's explore, was due to you feeling uncomfortable with the size and length of the tunnel. I couldn't have coped stooping at 5ft 8 (same as you). Stunning to see how well built the tunnel is.
By the time we reached the tunnel, I was exhausted and ready to sit down. So a 560 metre clamber wasn't fun. I was aching for days afterwards, but it was all worth it in the end.
The reservoir had a lot of issues with fishers. well where there is water an all that, how ever Leeks, that may well be the Welsh, sorry my hearing isn't good these days :-)

Thank God you guys posted this. I was there today. It’s been driving me crazy what it was.
Glad I could help

Brilliant film - there are so many examples of structures like that tunnel - well made, probably last for ever. Many thanks
As a drystone waller, I'd like to applaud the men who built that tunnel and the incredible work skills in the masonry
Thank you for showing something I never would have known about otherwise Darren
Your videos are just showing people how beautiful that part of England actually is .. Now you can say that you actually went through that very long tunnel with the pipe lol. I enjoyed thank you for sharing your experiences with us all ..
That was VERY interesting. But that tunnel that seemed to NEVER end was very creepy - so well done you lot for tackling it.
Thanks for your video, it’s not just a tunnel and pipe, someone built that. Brilliant!
Darren, Martin & James what an awesome collaboration in a great location dont egt better then this.
Cheers guys.
Wonderful scenery and a well presented and interesting video.
That's another of your finds added to my "to visit" list. Thanks.
I do like how you super impose the old image over your videos👍thanks Darren
Love this place, great place for a walk. There used to be a derelict house at the top of the track , just under the dam wall. Great vlog mate a cracking intro.
Amazing views, wonderful music, wonderful edition... For a wonderful place and a nice allegory of my life (light at the end of the tunnel ;) )
You picked a good day for the scenery there guy's, that sky was fantastic and again showing us something we wouldn't normally see.
Well done , thanks for sharing 👍

Enjoyed both this and Martin's video! Both have unique perspectives.
Absolutely stunning is saddleworth especially in summer your lucky to park mind you what a brilliant video Darren!
Glad you enjoyed it

Yes, I did enjoy that! Especially the snow capped head!
I love your video's. Saddleworth is in the Historic West Riding of Yorkshire.
Ha ha, sounds a lot more exotic than Oldham, but it has been a part of Greater Manchester since 1974.
@@hedgemist691 it has been in Yorkshire since the doomsday book.mentioned in it.G Manchester is not a county.
Darren....those two are always up to something🙂 a couple of naughty boys. Aww so glad you all had a good day. 🥰🐶🐶🐶

Hi Darren, well mate that was certainly different. Learn something new every day!
Steve
I’ve just watched the Martin zero video and then I’ve watched yours so well done to both of you for making them almost different and both very interesting
Thanks for taking me somewhere I certainly wouldn't go, down that tunnel! Love your videos and follow Martin as well. Well done the 3 of you
Thanks Tony. Glad you liked it.

Really interesting Darren.
Thank you

Thanks Suzie, I appreciate that.
Interesting as ever ... and it keeps you fit!
I was about to comment that Martin Zero had covered this..
Then I realised.. He was with you.
"Welcome BACK.. to another video."
Yes. A grand day out.
Another interesting video Darren thanks 😊 for that 👍 looks like you enjoyed the day 😀 👍
Another well presented and informative video.

Not to far from us, never been up there but do know the location, very interesting stuff Darren.
Interesting film ,thanks..
Thanks Mick.
GREAT VIDEO I NEED TO GO AND VISIT SOMETIME
Love the scenery, and some nice infrastructure as well.

( Inverted Sythen)👍
Think I been there on YTS many years ago the view is stunning good video 👍
Interesting area once again Darren, you've definitely mastered the drone now!
Believe it or not. I didn't use it once in this video.
Fantastic ,thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Brave man walking down that tunnel mate
Wasn't too bad. Just awkward
There's light at the end of the tunnel so why is it taking so bloody long to get to it!!!!!! All that beautifully built stonework and no one to appreciate it, thanks for contorting yourself to show us. Great overlays and the opening shot to the Simpsons!!👍🏻😧

Nice video. Really surprised the tunnel isn't gated off though
Yeah me too, but it is quite remote.
Great video and the clouds at the beginning looked like the start of the Simpsons 👍
Bloody superb
Thanks Lee.
Brilliant video, just subscribed!😃
Welcome aboard! Thanks
super vid boys
I laughed so hard at whatshername when she popped up 🤣🤣🤙
Hi. Great video. What video editing software do you use?
Are these resovoirs still used to supply water to Manchester and/or other towns in the area. I hope so.
Yes they are, drinking water for all.
Fantastic loved it, certainly would not go in it. 😱 how long did it take you to get through the tunnel ?
I’ve seen an explore through here, he found items on the pipe inside re spell casting and you found the sheep’s scull 😱 🤔
About 45-50 minutes to get through.
Wow I couldn’t do five mins in there 😮
It was good, and the old photos of them building the dam. 👍🏻
@@AdventureMe That’s ages 😱 don’t know how you all did it 😮
Thanks for doing that, now I don't have to!!
Hi Darren well all i can say is long walk and bloody longer tunnel not bad but as you know I prefer the railway one's see you next week
It sure was a long walk.
You should wear snow on your head more often - it suits you! Great Video.
It did. But bloody freezing

😟
has anyone got the coordinates for this tunnel please? thank you
Somewhere in this vicinity.
maps.app.goo.gl/Tw5nK7TMxTswGRK38
You should have claimed the waterfall to the top . It's like Lord of the Rings up on that ridge
It's the arty version of Martin's video :)
Even though the footage was sped up you can see it's a long tunnel
I hope you planted the Yorkshire flag up there. Saddleworth Moor is part of the West Riding, but the Mancunians have been occupying it since 1974.
We drank Yorkshire Tea instead with two Lancastrians, that will have to do for now.
The reservoir had a lot of issues with fishers. well where there is water an all that, how ever Leeks, that may well be the Welsh, sorry my hearing isn't good these days :-)
What was the tunnel for?
Transferring water between reservoirs.
And I'm 7 feet and so I don't even venture into that, aside from that, I don't even get up that mountain, halfway through I'm already dead.😉😀🙄
In the video i Didn't see any Rescue safty equipment around the site just in case a member of the public should fall in. ???
Around what, the reservoir? I think there were some things in a small hut at the top.
I'd get claustrophobic in that tunnel lol
1day Keith bennnet will be found . Very curious to why only Kieth wasn’t found RIP m8
A beautiful place...yet full of tragedy too. It's forever going to be linked to two of the absolute worst people to ever live.
Yes that's true.
Top video has normal Darren
All that tunneling and still didn't find any diamond :(
I wish I did
I bet that trek would have been easier on scooters or bikes. I couldn't walk up that slope to save my life.
Yes probably. If I'd had mine then I would have used it. But the last mile or so was on moorland.
get a 4x4 and drive up save the walk
I hope those bones were animal?
So do I
