I went ahead and converted it to metric, rounding to one decimal for the most part. 1st hole: 10,5 cm 2nd hole: 12,4 cm 3rd hole: 16,8 cm 4th hole: 19,35 cm 5th hole: 21,9 cm Full chamber length (from sound hole): 33 cm (1,2 cm decriments for tuning) Diameters: Tune holes: 0,6~0,7 cm Chamber: 1,9~2,0 cm
Charlie, You totally blew my mind when making the track area using the hacksaw, at first I was thinking - 'What is this guy doing??' - then was 'WHAAAT, Amazing!' - totally brilliant. Thank You
@@BlueBearFlutes poor southerner here, my grandfather couldn't read or write, he put a special mark on it with a nail file encase it come up stole. He once put a man in the hospital with that hammer. Its a treasure ^^ here's to keeping our families histories alive with our treasures ^^
Using the node as a plug for the slow wind chamber...of course. This has been my major problem of the last few days, trying to cut wooden plugs for large bamboo with literally only a pocket knife as a tool for various flute types.Thank you.
Native American flutes are identical to the native bamboo flutes we have here in Australia. ONE BLOOD, ONE HEART AND ONE VIBE... THE VIBE OF THE EARTH TRIBES!
on the playing end where the node is, with 1 inch off the node on either side, will the first hole or lttle square , what are the measurements for these two holes, I cant find the measure for these two holes . I,m looking
Wilson, it really depends on the flute maker. There really is no set rule for the measurements, however a good rule of thumb would be: 1/2" diameter has 3/16" sound holes. 3/4" diameter flute has 1/4" sound holes, 1" diameter has 5/16". The distance between the air supply hole and sound hole are varying depending on the maker.
Adruma victoria Thank you for your kind words. You can use the a pattern to make a G. Here's how: Slide the entire fingering measurements for the A away from the mouthpiece area by 2 diameters of the material being used. Likewise cut the flute 2 diameters longer.
Careful with that Gerber. I nearly cut the end digit of my ring finger off with that model. It's capable of taking and holding one truly wicked edge. Working on my own flute now - with a different knife ;-)
You should see some of our videos that I use planners, routers and table saws on! They are so much sharper and much more unforgiving than my pocket knife! Thanks for watching!
Hey there!! Thank you so much for your awesome videos! I am making a bamboo flute with the help of them and thought I did everything perfect... until all was finished and it didn't make any sound at all :( I have been trying to figure it out for a couple days and just realized I knocked out BOTH nodes in the bamboo... uggggg. My flute is so beautiful and cool, I'd hate to start all over.... is there anything I can use or do to save it??
I hope you find what works best for you. After nearly 35 years of flute making, I can make them with my eyes closed! Oh wait, I made a video like that too! ;)
I has been very hard to find any river cane or bamboo but I was looking around at Lowles and found bamboo but it was not very large by that I mean round I bought the largest but it is only about an inch across not quite but almost so all that I have seen on here are larger , but what I would like to know will this work as well as yours ..but I am going to try and make one ugh but there is blockage in mine how do I get through those they are at each nod.. thank you awaiting for a reply ty
Sondra Todd You'll have to knock the links out except for the one you need to make the sound area. Use anything from a metal rod to an arrow shaft. Be careful not to crack it. It should work fine. If you want better materials please see my friends website: www.fluteblank.com
Also I live in Tennessee and I do not think we have any of these river canes around or close to our rivers here.. I have been to some close to me fishing and target practicing here or no bamboo here..I checked on the web site you sent but the price is within my reach but the shipping makes them alittle pricey for me
Sondra, I lived in Tennessee for a few years and found a lot of River Cane while living there. There was a Kayaking club that had perfect indigenous material for flute making. Ask around, you may be surprised at what you can find.
I live in a small town named Trezevant in Carroll County there is Obion River which is in Obion county where I lived for several years and the Obion runs through there I used to go traget pratice on the banks of the river hmm it is about 1 hour away I could not find any there.. there is Paris , tn but to far to drive but I asked a freind to check it out to see if he could find some and where he looked not any he said mostly populated could have been cleared out.. but Obion is the closest..which river did you find some and how long ago I will more than likely order from your site you gave me,,
I have two or three videos on this that may help out. One is called the secrets Native American flute making and another is called the best track for your flute.
Did you really make the flute with just a knife and a hacksaw?I was thinking that you made one on the side and pulled that one out at the end..lol..Sorry But I use to do detective work in a big city and I saw it all..But anyway that was a pretty nice flute though..
Thank you for the videos I've been trying for years
You bet my friend! We have hundreds of them, be sure to check out some of the others!

That hammer is the same kind of hammer my grandfather used and taught me to use when i was a child. Its a damn good hammer.
My dad taught me on a hammer that had his family name embossed into the metal on the neck of it. Had a lot of steel workers in the family! 🙂

Hey, I'm making a flute that's only in tune with itself. Would you mind providing the proportions of diameter to hole spacing?
Osiyo Charlie, Have you ever made a rim-blown flute? I like Anasazi flute's sound but can't find info on making them.

You have a great spirit. Can one make a G flute using an A as the template and just cut the shaft longer?

Plaster? Maybe
Use a dowel or cork stopper.
cool video!
I'll make mine also with hand tools only, but I'll also will use a hand drill for the holes ans a round file for the inner bodywork.
I hope you find what works best for you. After nearly 35 years of flute making, I can make them with my eyes closed! Oh wait, I made a video like that too! ;)

In another video, I made one with just a pocket knife and materials are found laying on the ground.
If you were in boy scouts, you would probably know how to do the wood carving
PS I've never seen anybody drill holes that fast Haaaaaaa
nice
YOU'RE NOT USING JUST A HACKSAW AND A POCKET KNIFE!
+Gorgoxdestroyer The title says using a hacksaw and pocket knife, nowhere does it say JUST.
