Hate being that guy but I just want to say, this isn't retro. People making 8-bit music back then isn't retro, it would be considered retro if they were to use it now because it would be a choice now. Back then music on a Gameboy just couldn't do anything more than this for an OST, they definitely did great with what they had though and it's depressing how terrible most OSTs are now. Both film and games have garbage OSTs now because corporate control kinda killed the drive people used to have, no one cares enough to make a score they personally take pride in cuz they're too alienated from their own craft. I mean, the 90s had crazy amounts of corporate control over media already but not like it is now, it's in a completely different world now. But then, another thing is that people tend to need limitations to truly thrive creatively. When you can make *anything* , a person tends to be overwhelmed and doesn't know where to start - each path *could* be just as good as the next and you tend to just go a half-baked route or just kinda do a little bit of everything and it ends up just meh. When all you can make is 8bit music with 3 total tracks (just a bass, melody, and Harmony) - and with almost no possible choices in tone variety or anything - you go in with that limitation set already and it puts you in a completely different headspace. You're not clouded with the fact that you could make an endless list of possible pieces of music, you got an 8bit score to make so you you're just going straight at it. It's really really effective to force oneself to work within boundaries because you just become more creative about it.

Because their idea of "updating" music is to add more layers of chaotic sound with crazier instruments and more filters for that "omg new and improved", "totally cinematic" appeal. It sounds more technically impressive, but it loses the identity and emotion of the originals, and you no longer get those raised hairs when you hear it.
