  • This video is about our experience moving to Saudi Arabia - what you need to know before moving to Saudi Arabia. It serves as a reference for those who are thinking and planning to relocate to Saudi Arabia. Saudi used to be one of the hardest countries to visit in the world. Therefore, people do not know much about it, especially the changes in recent years in accordance with Vision 2030 of the country.
My husband and I moved from Sydney, Australia to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at the end of 2019. As of now, we have been in Saudi Arabia for 5 months (Dec 2019 to Apr 2020). I hope this sharing could be helpful to anyone unfamiliar with Saudi Arabia.
    This Part 1 is about:
    0:00 background of our relocation
0:49 Intro to the Middle East
    1:50 Intro to Saudi Arabia
    2:48 expat population
    3:10 provinces
3:24 the King, the Crown Prince, the Vision 2030
    3:59 men dress code
    4:32 women dress code
4:52 recent changes in the country

Hi Haan, thank you for sharing the informative video series. I am also planning to move to Riyadh post the international flights resume. Can you please provide an estimate how much money(USD) would be ideal to bring in order to manage preliminary expenses? Here you can assume that i have to pay for all the expenses, right from permanent housing, utilities etc. I am an Indian and my office is in Al Murabba Thanks in advance.

Hi Vishu, I suggest you book your initial stay in advance, and you can pay that online using credit card (this was what we did, and we stayed in hotel for 2 weeks). If you have HSBC bank ATM card, you can withdraw from SABB bank ATM here, without any transaction fee. Even for local transport, you can take Uber/Careem which you don't need cash.
For housing, they will require you to pay in advance, for example, pay for 3 months at one time. And you may need to pay for security deposit as well. How much to pay will depend on your rent. If you have friends here already, you may check with them about the rent amount in advance for your choice of accommodation. For us, the rent we pay includes all the utilities.
Hope this helps! :) If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

If memory serves me right, we brought USD1000, but didn't actually spend much of it. Only used it to exchange for some Riyals on the first day. After that just withdraw from SABB bank ATM.
Due to Covid-19, now a lot of places prefer card payments. Make sure you bring a credit card along!
