I did this project too, but I just used the foam board you use for school projects and such. I added batting to mine for a bit more insulation and a softer look/touch. I used a starry night pattern since my JL is Hydro Blue. Thanx for the idea.
This is an awesome DIY project. I’m in the process of making these inserts for the front, back and cargo sections of my hardtop. Great video. Thanks for sharing this
Awesome execution. Here's what I want to do with this. I'm getting a Sarge Green Gladiator and ill paint the inside of the top black. Then I will use your headliner method with the OPC camo pattern material. I may include patches from my military career. Thank you for the video.
I wanna make a headliner for my TJ and put some of those light-up fibers through it to look like stars. This tutorial really helps tackle the first obstacle! I hope to start soon during this time stuck inside!
Thank you so much for sharing this build-up, great info. Looked at the follow-ups in the thread as well. For sure going to try out. not sure what pattern yet, going to look at today.
use glue dots (Zots) little dots of sticky rubber like the ones credit cards come with in the mail. Some headliners do not hold the velcro and need to be pinned in. these come in roll or sheet, used for posters etc.
Found a hand held jigsaw or coping saw works great on that style foam board over an exacto knife for the initial cut out from when I was making war game terrain. The exacto is definitely better for trimming.
here because I'm curious...VW Tartan plaid would look great in there too. And you can use your own brand and quantity of sound deadening material to apply where you want to knock down some of the noise/resonance of the panel and minimize rain noise.
I am going to tackle this DIY while Sheltering at Home if I get the materials on time. Got the foam board and gorilla glue from Home Depot but they were out of the velcro. Ordered my fabrinc from Joann's and got the velcro from Amazon. Thanks for the inspiration
@@CreativeYetCrazy I've got the 2018 JL. I've started but was not happy with my first result using .5" foam board going to get thicker and give it another go
Great Video@ but i wish before u installed it u had a Laser Gun to check the Temp to do before and after u install the headliner ,,,,years ago i did something almost like that for my TJ but i had a combination (FOAM +Reflectix Staple Tab Double Bubble Foil Insulation Roll)......... but it was a great difference in the TEMP... i'm gonna use your technic to make another one for my JKU will still combine the Reflectix... i like the spray Option make it very simple & easy...still waiting for the UPDATE...
It’s been almost a year since this video, are they still holding up good?? Any initial ideas that you changed bc something didn’t work out? And do they actually keep your inside a lot cooler and reduced noise reduction? Sorry for all the questions but I really don’t want to spend 400 dollars on headliners.
They are holding up perfect! Still keeping it cooler in the Jeep, and nothing failing at all. I am going to do a follow up video this week since it going to be 110° here in the desert! This was a way better investment than spending $400
A few questions..... Can you stick velcro patches to this? Is there a noticeable difference in cabin temps during the summer/winter? Where did you buy your material? It's been a little over a year, how's it holding up? Thanks for the video!
Great video. One question: Have you noticed any smell in the cabin? Most rigid insulation panels have to have fire retardants chemicals, per building codes, that off-gas. Just curious.
Great video! Have you had any issues with the adhesive on the velcro lettng go in te heat? I make a set of these for my JK and used a different brand of 2" adhesive backed velcro. Yesterday every one of them fell off in the heat of the day. Did you use the Velcro brand?
@@BoldCanyonOutdoors - Thanks for the response. That's what I get for trying to save a few bucks! I added some 3M VHB tape around the perimeter and it seems to be holding well. Otherwise I will order the correct Velcro and change it.
Awesome video! I was looking at the headliners on Amazon (I just recently got my first Wrangler... looking to save on making mods). These things are getting upwards of $250 just for the freedom panels! I already have some of this stuff laying around, so it may not cost me the full $80 for the freedom panel area. But great video, I'll probably be doing this sometime this week. I'm just wondering... how much fabric did you use (I have a JLU, so I don't know if it'll be exactly the same... looks like you have a Rubicon, which the measurements probably would at least be fairly close)?
What type of fabric is best, I imagine cotton would allow the spray adhesive to come through when pressing it on the board. This looked thicker than cotton, just making sure I don't royally screw this up. Thanks in advance.
This fabric is cotton, but it has almost a canvas feel to it...like a thick Hawaiian shirt for lack of a better description. Just put the spray adhesive on evenly and use consistent pressure to secure it...maybe a rolling pin would help if you think the fabric is too soft
It looks great but that foam board is so flimsy and dents if you look at it wrong. I don't imagine it would hold up well to regular handling of the hard top (removal/reinstall) either.
It’s actually still holding up very well. We are regularly taking off the freedom panels and putting them back on during the AZ winter, and they are still looking like new. After 2 years, they are in better shape then the Mopar ones I ran in my last JKU.
This is a non-toxic insulation, as is most styrofoam and home insulation board. You might be referring to spray foam insulation, which does have toxic gasses. No problems with ours for over a year
Christian Larose styrofoam is a highly toxic substance on its own. This type of hard foam insulation off gasses which means it slowly emits toxic gas from it, this is why you only use it in your house because it’s in your walls not open air in your Jeep
Wow it looks great! Definitely going to try this out. I was wondering if you had any updates on you DIY headliners? Like if you noticed a difference in temperature within the Jeep. Whether the adhesive you used is still sticking to the fabric. What about Noise reduction and maybe things you wish you would have done differently.
It definitely keeps it cooler and has considerably less cabin noise. We have had a few days over 105-110 degrees already this spring, and there’s been no issue with the spray adhesive or Velcro we used. So far we are perfectly happy and wouldn’t change a thing.
Sweet! Thanks! I can make these myself no problem great instructional video. Then I can tell my girlfriend I spent like $300 on them, then I'll take the money I saved and go to the strip club and get hammered and get a bunch of lap dances. Thanks again! You rock!
Financially smart and very creative on this project.

Nice, I would put some beach graphite
What are the dimensions of the template?

@@BoldCanyonOutdoors thank you for your answer these questions. Because It also answered my 2 questions, Temp , durability.
I just found this but how do they help in the winter?
It’s a layer of insulation to hold heat in. It just helps reduce temperature change with the outside, just like insulation in a house.
Great video.
