Power of scotchbrite ;) I make my own scotchbrite disk for the drill by cutting up 3 loose sheets of them, stick them on a bolt and put them on the drill. It cleans/finishes surfaces tremendously.

Love the work! Ive learned so much from you so far, just started watching as i got my first motorcycle. 1993 FXDWG.
Ive had good luck putting a thin layer of original standard WD-40 on stainless steel exhaust just before the heat cycle of it and it comes out looking bronze ish almost a dull gold on some car builds.

I always learn something new watching your videos - who the hell needs a bench grinder when you can put a drill in a vice! Love it! I've just taken in a non-running CBF125 for my wife who wants to learn to ride - thought I'd treat myself to a little winter project aswell - needed a top end rebuild - although this Harley seems to have been treated with a lot more love than my little 'project' lol!

Been holding back on the comments recently cos I know it makes more work for you and Pen, but had to say, I nearly skipped this video just because it didn't seem like it was going to be different from the chainguard, but pleased I didn't because I learned about sheet metal hole cutters which I haven't come across before. I don't think there's a vid of yours I've watched where I haven't learned something new. Incidentally, the advice you gave me about my clutch a few weeks ago turned out to be bang on - I did have a plate out of order, so thanks for the heads-up and for taking the time, very much appreciated. Yes more chrome going black on the right track del like the holes in the heat shields looks classic but a new age feel to the bike with it going black top man del 👍👍

Del that was a really cool idea on those heat shields. Breath some clean air. Can hardly wait to see how they come out after paint.
Thanks buddy, just ran out of time and the paint job will be at least a 6-7hr day, and I know what happens, the minute I start to rush tings, I've always kept that the key rule with project work, don't bite off more than you can chew, don't rush anything and stop when you get bored... then you'll always make your best results, works for me anyway! Next video online friday teatime mate, just gotta finsh and edit it !

Have to be careful about chrome dust particles. Glad to see you’re using a respirator. I use to back in the 80s and 90s at a tool plant that made Sears Craftsman tools and other companies. Started off in the plating dept. Lots of nasty chemicals there but a good place to work

I think i like the white protectors better.
When you put them on the bike with the whitish tape, man that would look so much better in proper clear white.
Would fit the bike better as well i think. With black exhaust :)
It's always the best e-mail of the day when I get a notification that a new video is out. It's been a bit of a rough start to the year so I find learning all these little tips and tricks very therapeutic. Nice to hear Penny's voice again as well. No doubt all the painted bits will make a fabulous contrast to the chrome that's left. I'm sure I'm watching a masterpiece in the making. :) Best wishes to both of you!

You ever thought of a air cleaning unit from the ceiling ,woodworkers use them . Rutlands do one I think maybe helpful for fine particles in the air .
Toning down the chrome will look fantastic mixed with the black. Those sheet metal cutters are new to me... outstanding. Keep going!

I was a spray painter until I got poisoned by the chemicals but when I used to paint I always put a few drops of wax killer in my gun a bit hard when using tins like you but maybe you might get a gun and try spraying with one buy your paint in bulk might be cheaper and a good skill to pick up .

@@bazzab4863 Thanks mate, I have painted with a spray gun quite a bit in the past, done a few cars, and larger bike panels, but when I'm just doing small bike pieces and I find cans are just so convenient, and so far I've not managed to find this Tough Paint that I generally use in neat, undiluted form, it would obviously need different thinners, so I'd need quite a bit of study on that to get it right, but for big bodywork, you're right, guns are always best! For light items like them clips, if you do the cable tie up the wrong way round you can undo it again to reuse it.

Great job on getting the heat shields banged out and straight!! Yeah, you don't want to be buying those from a dealer, they are $205 per shield!! Been watching this project from the start, and at times cringing!! I own a 2001 FXDWG that's pretty much in stock condition.. just a soft spot I have for old Wide Glides. However, I am liking how your project is turning out! Learning some things too!!
Hey buddy, thanks for your kind words, and am happy with how they turned out, specially as I just found out the price too! I made an error in the name, not shotgun guards, they seem to be marketed as buckshot heat shields (my mistake) and over here we have them priced at £290 a pair for a Sportster... which is insane, glad I didn't find that out before I started cutting as I would have been a lot more nervous ha ha... I know that the venerable dawg is a loved, and valued, bike that has it's own following, and I love them too... same as the Night Train, they are one of the most iconic models Harley have ever made, but I will be sympathetic to it, am not butcerhing it, just re-inventing it in a modern style that is up to date and suits my taste... but it will forever be a Dyna WideGlide and unmistakably so!

Hi mate, thanks for your kind words on the Harley, really enjoying the project, and got some excitign new moves to come... wheels being built this week, going 16" and fat tyre on the front and hoping for a more modern and up to date look. Gonna deal with the wheezy old cv carb as well, something that will feed a bit more fuel down it's neck, it already has some sporty cams fitted along with thetensioner upgrade already done... I haven't seen the kits yet, the biggest struggle I'm having at the moment is affording a donor bike, I only bought the Harley about a month ago and trying to get the money together to buy another bike by March is a tall order.. anything trendy is too expensive and I'm not interested in little stuff, or classic Brit, so the options are thin... but just gonna focus on what I'm doing and cross that bridge when I come to it!

Harpic limescale remover the blue one on the headers and it will remove loads of crusted on carp then a good wash off and either polish them or scuff them up and they will look new
Hi Gary.. thanks mate, thats a cool tip, ill remember that.. i have seen lots of house hold domestic chemicals work in the garage... Bi-Carb and salt for cleaning silver, Mr Muscle for taking anodising off, lemon juice for cleaning seats etc etc.... ill add that one to the list... Gonna scuff the actual header pipes up with the fine scotch polishing pad and get a really nice satin finish... im hoping it'll take the corrosion off at thew same time... but if not.. i now have a plan..!! thanks mate.!

You're dead right mate, buckshot they are, I mention it in the next video, which I'm still shooting... it's been so long since I looked them up I wanted to mention the price, I assumed they would be about £70 a pair, being conversative, but nope, believe it or not over £200 in some places, which is just hilarious, or do I mean hysterical! harley accessory prices are just out of this world these days, and it so makes it worth doing stuff yourself, plus not only that, it contradicts the word custom if you bought them from the MoCo... and yes, indeed, PP had full PPE and a carbon fibre onsie (she likes to wear that anyway lol)... good to hear from you mate.
@@Moonfleet41 I took my first Harley in for sissy bar and pillion seat plus peg. Whilst doing the work they scratched the buckshot nearest the rear. I complained and got both replaced at their expense, which showed as £299.99. Joke.
@@jaimielibbi1 Really? So it wasn't a mis-print then?! I saw them advertised for £290 myself and thought it must be a mis-print, that's just insane and I bet they didn't give you the old ones back, you could have re-painted them and put them on Ebay lol
Looks good Del! Got my first Wemoto order all the way here in Colorado USA last night! Slinky Glide Clutch cable for the 09 Speedmaster and a Sealy Chain breaker tool. Have my own upgrades thru this winter also...Really curious on this Slinky Guide Cable tho as i may be replacing handlebars and grips so I may order a throttle set eventually. I like the quality so far from just going over it. Awesome vids, very helpful!

Trying to suss out a new handlebar set to figure out what would look good and be comfortable, I feel the stock speedmaster (mine is a 2009) place the wrists at a "different" angle than what Im used to..we'll see. I have to agree with that on every level mate... better looking, and more intelligent, but she don't like getting dirty like I do... touch and go about the holes, the metal is so think, it did deform quite badly, but hey, I recovered it, and it came out well...so like the saying goes, you're not judged by the effort you put in, but by the results you make! And he who dares win aye lol

Thanks Del, good effort. I've just bought myself a Bosch angle grinder to do that same on my Sportster's front forks. You mentioned Wellington Welding in a previous video? Which ones do you recommend buying?
Hi Tom.. if you're going to grind on the alluminium fork sliders.. then be really gentle and use the fine grade 'blue' wheels..or the red medium grade if the finish is really badly corroded.. and test an area first to get the hang of it.. if you go in too hard you'' make deep marks that will be hard to get out..!!!

It's like the 3rd Dec and I want to open the other 22 doors on the advent calendar today lol...
A thought...... 2018 Road King standard....... ok, you with me?...... the boys at the dealership tell me that shift linkage is boring...... I’m thinking, ya Harley catalog has some, but..... a delboy creation would be really cool..... not that you have the time nor the interest, but..... I think it would be the sweetest little lathe project..... yes, I’m dreaming😊 you probably get that a lot!!!

Hi Del, sorry if a daft question; I'm gonna get myself a cordless grinder soon, and I want to get some of those pads you've got there at 19:03 but I don't know any of the terminology! If I walked into a hardware shop after some of them "sanding pads" for my grinder what would I have to tell them I'm looking for? Or if you've got a recommendation I can look up online?

Hello again! My bike is at my lokal guru and he's makeing the engine from a 883 to a 1200 , what is your thoughts about running it in ? Some say take it easy for a bit and some say ride it like your going to ride it , what is your advise??
Hi Timo,, the advice to "run it in" is sound advice.. you should treat it like a new engine for the first 100 miles at least, that way you give the new pistons and barrels a change to bed in together without causing any early wear...
Running it in does not mean riding it about at 20mph though.. ride it like normal, but just don't let it idle on the spot for too long, no need to "warm it up", just start the engine, give it 20 seconds or so to feed the oil round, and pull away... Don't "Lug" the engine, feed the revs in gradually, but not so soft it does no work.. running in any new motor needs some load on it to make sure things scuff into each other.... and finally buddy.. avoid long periods of the same revs on a long road.. dont "cruise" it along at a fixed speed.. it helps to make the motor work a little.. but not too hard.. im sure you understand.. its just a happy medium of careful but purposeful use... and once its done a 100 miles.. you can ride it as normal..!
Also buddy..i don;t know where you are, so not sure what the weather is like where you are.. but if its hot there.. then avoid running any new motor in when its 40 degrees...pick cooler weather for the first few rides.. Good luck with it, keep in touch. Del.

It probably looks good (not watched it all yet lol) but doesn't cutting holes in the exhaust and belt shields make them less sheildy...? XD
Not really sure buddy, but they look cool and Harley fit them as standard on many models in one way or another... in terms of heat shields, it's not really to stop radiated heat because the engine does enough of that, it's more to stop you touching the pipe and setting fire to your clothing lol... as for the belt guard, it's made of pretty thick steel and if a belt brakes at speed, the standard guard, even in full, does bugger all to stop it tying itself in a knot and locking the wheel up!

Hi mate, sadly not, last time I had a Softail was my FatBoy about 3yrs ago, changed to a later model Switchback and realised I'm far happier with an earlier carburettor'd engine, which is why I'm really happy with the Dyna and can't wait to get it on the road!

Hi Steve, have a search online for a product called Vinyl Cote... it's an epoxy paint that remains super flexible and designed for painting vinyl seats, I believe there's a version of it for leather too, or it may in fact, also work on leather too... so 'Vinyl Cote', check it out !

Hi Ian.. ive been suggested that many times buddy.. but i lean and push on the bench when the vice is bolted to it, and a bench on wheels will skate about all over the place.. even with locking castors.. sadly i need it totally solid and sure footed to stay put when im working on it.. so i just have to lift it round, it doesn't take a mo.. Hi taking into consideration how well you're kiting your workshop out I can't understand why you're still using your drill m/c clamped in the vice for various wire brushing, grinding, polishing etc considering you do these procedures frequently, you can buy a purpose built machine for little money, even a Lidl one at about £20 would be better. Personally, I keep 2 both being 3000rpm. one has a wire wheel and grinding stone and the other is for polishing only as you will know you do not want grit in your mops.
The bench you drag about I think would work better with heavy duty casters fitted 2 of them locking?
Another guy had what I thought was a great idea of a cheap pull-down blind where you paint instead of a sheet of cloth pinned to the wall.
I don't doubt you have thought about these things but thought I would mention anyway.
