Glad I seen this video Del. I am currently restoring my grandfather's '86 Kawasaki GT750 and (being a big fan of Simoniz sprays) I bought this very stuff to repaint the engine. The aluminium units were black when they left the factory and was hoping this paint would match it nicely without being too glossy. But now I think it may be too flat without using your technique of giving it a slight shine. May have to have a rethink. I have also considered just stripping the engine of it's old flakey factory paint and polishing it up but I'd prefer to keep as original as possible to honor my grandfather.
Hi Mark, The VHT paint does dry a little flat, and yeah, once it's cured fully you can buff it a little to bring some mild reflection to it... but TBH if it's just for the engine casings, i use the regular "Tough Paint" products, they're more then heat resistant enough for the casings, should withstand up to 300c without discolouring.. so then you could use their "Satin Black" which would give a really close match to the factory finish !
I lived and worked in London for a few years back in the late 80's. Motorcycle courier. ( CX500s mostly of course) Still have some mates back there ( I've been home in Australia for over 20 years now) I love watching this channel because it reminds me of my great mates and their brilliant Cockney slang. eg: Bit more Business like! Nice one mate, sounds like an adventure, good luck with it... if you're interested at all then there is a much more affordable version of a lift, Sealey make a metal fold away table that can hold 300kgs, gets the bike 2ft6" off the floor, so you can sit on a stool and have the engine at chest height, folds away the size of a sack truck up against the wall..! Let me know if you're interested, can pop you a link...

What you describe is literally 'touching in', not spot repair, that is rubbing down the area and a few squirts of spray to 'blow in' and then clear coat, either way would work if you're careful and take a pride in it!
Thank you mate, that's very kind, I have a few most bits to take off yet, but once it's all ready, everything will go back together in one go... looking forward to that day!
Muito obrigado irmão ... Estou feliz com os resultados, e tenho muito mais a fazer! Não nos esquecemos da nossa promessa de lhe fazer uma menção, vamos filmar em breve!
Great! All with only one spray can? then I saw that the surfaces you painted were worked, can I proceed in the same way also on the chrome surfaces or is there absolutely a need to pass glass paper? Thanks!
Awesome... this may be a stupid question but any need for clear coats to finish? specifically for high heat exhaust paint that is. I know with body work you would do several coats of clear but is that not needed if you doing high heat for exhaust type applications??
Hi Lucas, good question mate, and an important matter... the answer is no, you don't clear coat high temp. paints, usually if you want a gloss finish you buy a gloss high temp. paint... anything you put on an exhaust would have to be high temp. resistant, otherwise it would burn off, naturally. The reason clear coats are put on to body paints is to enhance the metallic effect in the base paint.
Love your videos helped me a lot when I did my raw exhaust covers before. Did have a question My new Vance & Hines exhaust covers were already factory painted before I got them but they got scratched when I slid my bike. Do I have to sand down the existing color on befor I spray the vht ? Or can I just spray after throughly cleaning the covers. Any help would be appreciated Ty
If you have some scuffs in the paint, then i would always sand those back to flatten out any imperfections, then key up the rest of the paint for a good key with the new VHT paint.. Thank you for your kind words and we're glad the videos can help.
So how are they holding up long term? I just picked up a Bonnie t120 black it has a scrape on the right header and I'm thinking of stripping them down and ceramic coating them but I'm worried about how they'll look long-term.
Nice one again del. I have two car wheels in need to paint. Great tips . I be doing them soon. Great video del. Hope you and penny have a great weekend. See you in the next video.
What did you use to sand them with and what grit? I'm thinking mmm about doing same to my exhausts and heat shields. How long did you let them cure before reassembly? How do they look now a year later? Kind regards
Hi Alex, I scuffed the metal with a 120 grit Scotchpad disc to give a little key, drying time (different from curing) was about 48hrs and you can 'carefully' put them back on. Then when you start the bike, they cure within about an hour of riding, be careful because the first thing that happens within the first minute is the paint goes soft and sticky, but then it dries away and starts to 'bake'... once it's fully cured after a few rides, it's tough as powder coat!
Depends on the paint you're using, read the directions on that product, heat proof paints usually don't need a primer, but it's a good idea to 'scuff' them up to provide a key.
Nice! How did the paint hold up now a year later? Using the same paint on my Harley exhaust, haven't cured it yet but paint seems very fragile, maybe much better after cured?
Hi Del, exhaust looks great ! You game me some ideas for mine. it will be a summer job as I can't heat up the garage. thanks a lot. have a good week. Gus
Hi Gus, always good to hear from you... ahhhh summer... roll on the warm days and ability to work out in the driveway for once! Good luck with it, and keep in touch, all the best, D&Px
Awesome cannot wait to see this bike come together del doing an ace job another awesome paint video I still haven't painted the front forks yet but hoping to do them soon 👍👍👍
Once VHT is dried it must be cured by heat, this can be done by running the engine up to working temperature for a few minutes and it will often 'smoke off'... once it's fully cured, you can just wipe it over with a little silicone and it should get a nice sheen to it!
Thank you very much for that. I was always suspicious of using spray cans for a good result but you have convinced me to try next time I need to. Unfortunately, I still don't have anything but a parking lot to work on so, here's hoping for a windless day when I do need to paint. Bah humbug! Best wishes to you and Penny :)
Hi Patricia, glad you enjoyed the video, and yes it's ideal to have a place inside to work, however, some people use a garden gazebo type tent, they're not expensive and will keep the wind, dust and bugs off... maybe that would help? Always good to hear from you, have a great week, chat soon, D&Px
I used to employ fish at my paint shop it saved me a fortune in air fed masks the paint never stuck to their eyes. But my water bill was just ridiculous !! 👍☮❤
You employ fish...? Now, come on Springy... you can't leave it there, don't be koi, tell us more about it, or is this a load of pollocks, you don't have to be a brain sturgeon to see this is a wind up, cod almighty, it's hardly credible that you were dolphinitely were a reel fish wife! I mean what did you pay them three squid an hour I presume?!...and where would they have their lunchbreak, in the 'school' canteen?! I guess any fin is possible, in a whelk'ept garage... but I'm gonna stop carping on now cos I'm getting a haddock!

Thanks Christopher, i think you;re right, Harley a really good and calling things weird names..!!! i like 12 guage.. or maybe "Punchout" heat shields lol..
Thanks to you i now have the confidence to try and paint !! ive learnt a lot and have surprised my self with my results , the tips and easy to follow vids have really helped it is so satisfying knowing that when you look at the bike and think "i did that " Mrs said can you do a vid on how to clean a cooker lol
Hi Mike, thanks for your kind words, I guess we can learn anything with a nudge and a tip, or two, it's just about taking your time and being confident aye.... as for the cooker, I'd need to watch a video on it first lol !
Believe both answers buddy.. it depends on the specific product you're using..some need it, some don't.. so the best advice in printed in the packaging of your chosen product... Hope that helps..
This paint does dry to a satin finish... but as a rule, for any matt finish, you can buff shine into it by literally doing just that.."Buff" it with a dry cloth, if it's rattle can paint it will work, but if it's harder paint, maybe like 2 pack.. then some very fine cutting compound like T-Cut will help bring a soft shine to it.. practice on a small area out of sight and you can develop the right technique that will achieve the results you want..! Hope that helps.
Great work Delboy! I want to do a similar job on my Kawasaki W800. I noticed you didn't use a primer, just a tack coat. Is there anything I should know about that before I throw myself into the job?
2 questions: why no primer? And january 2020 is it still holding on? And does it need to cure? I see many vids that you have to cure the paint to harden.
The heat proof paint goes over bare metal, no primer needed, still holding up just fine, and it "heat cures" the first time you run the motor up to temp....then it feels like a ceramic coating..
Another good paint job,it's gonna look awesome when it's put bk together also some good tips for painting as per normal that you never get off other bike stuff vids
Hey Del 'n' Pen. Although I'm not a Harley Movin fan I do enjoy your vids. I was told to use plastic sheets many moons ago as the static charge actually attracts the floating dust, you did say it seemed less dusty afterwards too.
Sure thing Hui, great to hear from you again Sir, and I think you must be dead right on that... when I took the dust sheet off the Harley, you can push the dust around on it, but you can't sweep it off... isn't nature wonderful lol !
Hi Del Just a question do you heat them up when you finished? I've had a look at a few of these and most of them say they bake them when they have finished?
I now have a couple of tins if tough black, while looking around I saw a blue and a yellow logo'ed tin both saying tough paint and satin black, both from Simoniz, any idea why this is? one a knock off? good price £11.30 for both, some places sell them twice as much. Would the heat resistant paint make an engine run hotter if you were to touch one up or fancy a change? no real plan to just wondered.
Hi mate, I've noticed that too, the logos and colours on the cans seems to vary but it's whatever is on the cap that seems to be the reliable to what's inside it... the blue and yellow cans were the original colours, but the ones I'm buying now are all black so I guess it's just marketing. Your question about engine temperature is an interesting one, and I've seen a lot of people proclaim great knowledge on all of this, but to my mind in basic common sense, the 'external' colour of an engine can't affect the internal temperature, cos that temperature is generated within... it is logical, however, that black will absorb more heat than silver, I think we all agree that .. but the heat isn't coming from the outside, so I can't see how it makes any difference... it certainly won't make any difference to the detriment of your engine as many are painted black, and some even chromed.. so am sure it'd be fine mate...
@@Moonfleet41 Oh right, I did not see the all black cans, maybe I've got old stock, hopefully it lasts a while unused. About the painted engines, that seem logical to me too, even air cooled engines might only get a little hotter, or maybe it radiates heat better lol
(P) great vid and liking the idea re: the headlight. I always get blown away by the clock time lapse shot for the flashing off time... They show just how much spray is in the air then how much clearer the air is after 15 mins you can see the clock so much clearer 👍
Sure thing buddy, the camera is about 15ft away from the clock, but zoomed in, so it does show how much overspray is in the air at the end of each coat across the whole area of the garage.. which is why I've now taken to covering the bike up and a good job too, as the cover had a layer of black dust on it!
Nice job Del. £200 + for shields??? I can hear the ripping sounds from here in norn iron!! Great you can give these ideas for those of us with minimum budgets. Love it.
Sure thing Phil, am glad you appreciate it, you can usually emulate most of the factory's accessories, with a bit of modification, glad you enjoyed mate!
would be interesting to investigate building a paint cube/booth or something with an opening to the outside that could easily be put up or taken down. Would be cool design and build videos
Still believe that white covers might have looked better. But the paint job came out very nice indeed. Doesn't this heat paint need to be heat cured? (180 celsius or something like that? )
Del this just proves that a person really can get excellent results from a rattle/spray can. Great job

Awesome cannot wait to see this bike come together del doing an ace job another awesome paint video I still haven't painted the front forks yet but hoping to do them soon 👍👍👍
Thanks WW, hope it works out well for ya, enjoy the process!
Hi Del I probably missed it in the video, but how do you give it the shine / satin look after it becoming a flat black?
Once VHT is dried it must be cured by heat, this can be done by running the engine up to working temperature for a few minutes and it will often 'smoke off'... once it's fully cured, you can just wipe it over with a little silicone and it should get a nice sheen to it!
Looking very nice Del & Penny! Keep it up, cheers, Doug
Fantastic job with the paint!
Pucker Job ..... Always good tips as well :-)
i used the simoniz tough black on my headers and motor and worked a treat
Hi buddy, good result, it does come out to about 400+ degrees so it's still pretty heat resistant, it's great to hear it worked!
Unreal job, good work man!
Nice painting job.
By the way, I loved the message at the end of the video.
Thanks Andt, glad you enjoyed!
Just caught up on your last 4 videos or so. Really awesome progress. Love the direction this bike is going.
I guess any fin is possible, in a whelk'ept garage... but I'm gonna stop carping on now cos I'm getting a haddock!

ok , i know my 'plaice' thats why i'm 'whiting' this , i'm just 'flounder'ing around having a 'dab' at it. I was thinking 'eel'be ok with my ap'roach' , I mean here i am 'perch'ed on a ledge , hoping to 'skate' around the issue looking for a 'ray' of light but it doesn't 'manta' anyway i'm having a whale of a time ..hang on ..whale ? that's a bloody mammal not a fish !! 🐳
Buckshot is a bit of weird name, they should've called it 12 gauge 😁👍.
Good vid Del, it's gonna look pretty with the chrome.
Thanks Christopher, i think you;re right, Harley a really good and calling things weird names..!!! i like 12 guage.. or maybe "Punchout" heat shields lol..
Coming along very nicely :)
Hi Mike, thanks for your kind words, I guess we can learn anything with a nudge and a tip, or two, it's just about taking your time and being confident aye.... as for the cooker, I'd need to watch a video on it first lol !
im just painting my tailpipe on my truck with VHT chrome finish paint, do i need a high heat primer for it? ive heard both yes and no
Believe both answers buddy.. it depends on the specific product you're using..some need it, some don't.. so the best advice in printed in the packaging of your chosen product... Hope that helps..
Tack coat first!
That’s comes into my head every time I use a spray can.
My main language is not english, what exactly does he means with a 'tack coat'? a single thin or thick layer or something?
I was going to say to use that brown masking paper, but not sure if you can beat 10p. A roll of it is only a couple or few pounds.
Hey would you mind elaborating a little on how to buff the flat black to turn more satin?
This paint does dry to a satin finish... but as a rule, for any matt finish, you can buff shine into it by literally doing just that.."Buff" it with a dry cloth, if it's rattle can paint it will work, but if it's harder paint, maybe like 2 pack.. then some very fine cutting compound like T-Cut will help bring a soft shine to it.. practice on a small area out of sight and you can develop the right technique that will achieve the results you want..! Hope that helps.
@@Moonfleet41 thank you so much!
you can use the back as well
Looking good.
100k subs, well done yo you both, great achievement x👍👍😎
Thanks Geoff... it feels very special to be here at last.
Rustoleum v VHT. Had a look at some vids on exhaust paint Del. A couple of which recommend using Rust-oleum as VHT tends to turn white!
Thanks for the info mate, have never experienced it myself but aprpeciate the info... cheers
Great work Delboy! I want to do a similar job on my Kawasaki W800. I noticed you didn't use a primer, just a tack coat. Is there anything I should know about that before I throw myself into the job?
No, this worked for me with the procedure you saw, and it's still in place and doing fine to this day... good luck with yours!
@@Moonfleet41 thank you sir! Awesome video btw. Greeting from Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Great job as always buddy and a great tip using the plastic sheets, regards Stu
Hurry up and cure properly, can't wait to see them fitted i reckon they'll look the mutts nutz 👍👌
Thanks Dave, me too, i recon they will look bang up to date now.
Another good paint job,it's gonna look awesome when it's put bk together also some good tips for painting as per normal that you never get off other bike stuff vids
Thank you Sir, im glad you can use the tip here and there.. and thank you for your kind words... Del.
Your plans for the bike sound great, Del. I'm loving the satin finish so far. As for £200 for HD buckshot heatguards.... sheesh!! 😳
Ride safe 👍
Sheesh indeed Keith.. pure fantasy aye. !
At what point do you heat the paint. When its dry to the touch?
Yeah, just let it dry first.. next day is fine !
@@Moonfleet41
Oh..cool. Thanks man.
What is a tack coat and what product did you use for a tack coat ?
Just a light coat of paint to make it 'tacky'... you're welcome
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks for the awesomeness !
Hi Del Just a question do you heat them up when you finished? I've had a look at a few of these and most of them say they bake them when they have finished?
Once it's dry you can reinstall the pipes, then once you fire the bike up, the heat will "cure" them in the first few minutes.!
Where can I find this pant
As usual bud........awesome work.
Finally! 100K subs! Don't forget to send youtube to notify them so that they will send you a plaque ;-)
Hi Teddy.. thank you sir, its an honour to have reached this level, and we're really chuffed... Sent them a mail this week..
(180 celsius or something like that? )
No it cures over time, it simply cures faster if it's heated.
@@Moonfleet41 oke.
I just followed what the can said ;)
amazing job as usual!!
Fantastic info again :)
