Definitely Edgar Payne’s “Composition of Outdoor Painting” is a must! Also, Dover Publications reprints lots of old standards like “Hawthorne On Painting” and “The Artistic Anatomy of Trees”. I love my little art library and perhaps I should add a Malcolm Dewey or two:)
Oh, if any artist struggles with procrastination (like I do) a MUST is “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield. It’s one of those books where once you read it, you’re out of excuses not to paint !
Great list, I will be checking those out. I really liked Daily Painting by Carol Marine. It inspired me to get more productive and not labor over large paintings. I refer to it often.
You have an amazing collection of art books Malcolm, thank you for sharing. I’ve already ordered The Art Spirit from World of Books! Can’t wait to read it! I have one of the books you mentioned, The Artists Way and found it so inspiring. My new favourite book of the moment is a book I found in a charity shop in UK by a British artist called Melanie Cambridge called Success with Oils. She dispels myths, gives advice on plein air painting and has little projects one can attempt. Like you she uses thick paint in a loose style.
I'm also a book nerd and read at least one a week (both fiction and non-fiction). By my breakfast place, I have an artbook so that I can just read a few pages every morning. The one I am currently working through (from a thrift book website) is Painting Gardens by Norman Battershill. It's so informative with so many examples in the book! I've purchased many of your previous book suggestions and have always been pleased to add them to my learning and library. Thank you for giving us another list of some of your favorites!!
Am new to painting so I've just made some great purchases from your recommendations. Came across you on Skillshare and I really look forward to your tutorials when I've time to paint.
Great list, thank you. OneI think would make an excellent addition: The Group of Seven and Tom Thompson by David P. Wilcox. Beautiful collection of art by this famous Canadian group of painters. It includes the history of how they came together as well as information about the individual artists works. I bought it on Amazon (USA) for the sale price of $29.
A book I am fond of is Essentials of Landscape Composition by Leonard Richmond first published in 1933 and still in print. It’s more about composing using sepia ink with a water colour brush, in a style I like
I am a Painter in Indonesia.Thank you for sharing all Art Books here. Three of these books I really like and want to buy are Alla prima, Van Gogh, and Monet. How to get these three books in Indonesia
If you’ve ever wondered about the colours on your palette and the history of where they come from, this book is sensational - “Colour: Travels through the paintbox” by Victoria Findlay. (Great video, I see a few I must get!)
Great video and very timely with the holidays. I recently discovered the book, "John Singer Sargent: His Life and Works in 500 Images," also by Susie Hodge. The quality of this book and pictures inside is excellent, especially given the relatively affordable price. If you are interested in his work and life, I highly recommend. Thank you Malcolm.
Thank you! I'll try some .... although, frankly and personally, I don't seem able to improve from art books; yes, a few useful bits sink in on occasion. I find that many of these books are showcases by the authors (and why not?) of their great art ... but I can never mimic the examples (even when they have step-by-step instructions) and I just get depressed trying. But I enjoy reading them nonetheless. So, thanks .. I'll try these ... perhaps with better results.

Wonderful, looks like your art library is growing nicely too.
Great list and definitaly ask one of your books for Christmas, thank you.

I love this tiny little book - Brian Cook's Landscapes of Britain - just because 🙂

Thanks for sharing! Sargent is a wonderful artist.
I might add Creative Authenticity by Ian Roberts, a Canadian artist.
Ian is always a good choice too.
