Hi Chris, thank you very much! Seeing how the channel has grown in approximately 24 months is incredible. I am beyond grateful to be able to do this. Thank you for following the journey!
Congratulations for achieving you tube award! Your channel really helps to clarify the points/doubts regarding the Art World today for person like me.. I am the one naturally blessed to create art! Always trying to paint with my own imaginations/ideas. Thanks for your valuable videos! 🙏
Always great even at my age to hear your advice and insights. Thank you. Many artist who have painted for many years can be come dismissive. Not so with me in total as my ear perks up at your commentary. Keep it coming at us man!

For painting technique I highly recommend this book as well. Secret Knowledge (New and Expanded Edition): Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters Paperback - October 5, 2006 by David Hockney (Author)
Hockney is a great teacher. I know, I was lucky enough to take his life drawing classes at UC Irvine back in the late sixties, the only time he ever taught. Thanks for the list of books, now I know what I want for Christmas + what to get as gifts. Vitamin P looks good.
@@war-painter Vitamin P is great! I am envious of your class by Hockney. Must have been a terrific experience and a memory to cherish. Merry Christmas and happy reading!
When it comes to techniques, I wonder about watercolors and gouache - i believe (based on feeling and implicitly through exposure it gets) they are looked down upon in professional art world, don't they? Why so?
#6 is a great read. All of those White Chapel series books are. I had to read a few in Grad school and they were really good. On Abstract Art by Briony Fer is excellent if you can find it.
Phaidon has loads of other books on contemporary painting that are much more up to date, like the Vitamin P series or the most recent one Great Women Painters, I'd highly recommend the Vitamin P series, think there are 3 volumes out by now. Of course I have Painting Today also, but I think that it's a little bit outdated...
Hi Julien! Maybe you can update this video? Many of the books you recommend are out of print (so VERY expensive), while several others are just plain VERY expensive. Maybe there are some more recently published books you can recommend?
You should always begin with oil painting first because oil can learn to mix colors much better with oil paint. Oils give you longer drying time allowing basic colors of a work to be mix and then added to changing , values, chroma, and pushing toward a hue change. Oils allow you to learn how to create subtle color changes and brush techniques that acrylics do not allow.
Interesting take, but I think to a complete beginner, the drying time of acrylic allows for the correction of mistakes a lot more easily whereas what we see as an advantage to oil will work against someone with no skill and likely will result in a muddy looking painting.
I preferred oil because its drying time made it easier to fix my mistakes. My acrylic's looked muddy and seemed hard to mix. I never gave acrylics a serious attempt, but have used it when time was a factor. @@callumworsfold5776
Acrylic paint can do the same with the addition of retarder. The company ‘Golden’ produce a fantastic paint line called Golden Open. It stays open on the pallete for days, and can be blended very well. I think the versatility of acrylic paint is its main benefit to a beginner. Try both mediums, and see which suits your artistic process best.
Interesting discussion. I believe the use of water makes it feel more convenient and easier to clean up a potential mess. Personally, I believe it is a lot easier to achieve great results with oil paint-but the initial learning curve to simply use it might be just a bit steeper. Thank you all for tuning in
I always appreciate the effort to put to give advice to painters. Having said that, I wish we paid more attention to non-Western born or resident artists in Africa. There is is obliteration of anything African everywhere despite the fact that there is a huge artistic scene in many African countries.Think the Dakar Art Biennale. I'm a Westerner and have a good knowledge of Art history due to Uni days, but where are the African contemporary artists? Where do we talk about them or read about them? The same, but in way less degree about Asian art, unless they superstars; I'm thinking about the Indonesian Afandi, who I didn't know anything about until I visited his home-museum a few years ago.
Yes, you're most definitely right. The focal point of the art world is still in the Western world in terms of institutions, collectors, events, galleries, et cetera, but the artists are coming from everywhere. We have a video and article on African painters, so feel free to give it a read/watch!
@@hd-xc2lz Don't mix apples with bananas, please. Being of colour or Afro-American and being African (born, bred and living in Africa) are two different things... So how many contemporary Senegalese artists are exhibited in USA top-notch Museums and talked about? Or Malinese? Or Moroccan?
I prefer a large book for the reproductions, but going for a high-gloss finish is incredibly outdated. With today's printers, they can achieve the same depth with a satin or Matt finish. Thank you for tuning in!

Hmm, I'd argue that in U.S. museums and galleries since the Pandemic, exhibitions of artists of color have been plentiful.

@@treezydcm In the U.S., the phrase "a person of color" extends beyond U.S. borders. An artist of color can be Taiwanese, Mexican, Ghanaian, etc..

If that works for you. That’s great. Interesting.
