    Great video as always Julien! An issue with monographs is the often prohibitive cost - you may as well be buying an actual work. I find publications accompanying shows to be rather more accessible and often available from the big gallery bookshops. It would be interesting too, to see a companion piece to this recommending some of the key philosophical and theoretical texts informing contemporary art making. Whilst not every artist wishes to become an academic and the associated jargon can induce a migraine (at least it does for me!) it’s at least useful to have a basic ability to reference the thinking behind the imagery.

      Hi Chris, thank you very much! Definitely, especially the catalog raisonnés-sometimes €200 per volume in a six-volume set. Regarding key articles and essays on contemporary art making, the ongoing series "Documents on Contemporary Art" publishes compilations of the most important writings per medium/topic/era and so on. A terrific series I highly recommend; I should've arguably included it in the video.

    Hello may I ask is it not advisable to use the term self-taught? I am asking because I attended an art seminar wherein the speaker was a gallery manager/curator and she mentioned that whenever she would see the term self-taught in an artist's bio/CV it's an instant dismissal from her. I would love to hear your thoughts about this since you use the term quite often in your videos.

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  Рік тому +5

      Hi MELT, thank you for tuning in and for a good question. I briefly discuss this issue in the two recent videos about artist resumes, in which I advise not to mention 'self-taught' in your artist resume but simply leave the education segment blank. Self-taught means untrained, so adding this to your resume is both counterintuitive and a bit unprofessional. So feel free to give those videos a watch for further instructions :-) Have a great day!

    As a former fine arts professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Washington University in St. Louis and GWU in DC, my best suggestion for anyone who would like to educate themselves to the “level” of art school, would be to stick your head in a pile of manure for 45 seconds. This is how corrupt, and hideous academia has become and the reason I quit. I was the highest evaluated faculty in my department at every school where I taught, so I am being genuine, when I say I quit - in disgust, frankly. To best educate one’s self about art, I would genuinely recommend Richard Diebenkorn, as an outstanding artist to study. Just look at the work, the layers, the underpainting, and also, the fact that he was an excellent draftsman.

    • @YogaBlissDance
      @YogaBlissDance Місяць тому

      I disagree and was also and art prof. at 2 colleges. And I quit too AFTER TENURE, I was being bullied.
      You don't actually say why you re so disgusted. I found some of the folks I taught with to be stuck in the 19th c. literally and also very petty. But there are also great teachers too!

    Art and art history books give you nothing about art or art ideas or the basis of art.
    What such books do is provide a very basic history of a particular world area, the politics at hand and most significant artist and their works at that time. This is provided almost everywhere including the internet.
    But artists historically have been influenced by many sources including religious, literature and political writings. These are not included in art books. The same for many other art and artist activities and ideas.
    Art books are usually very generic and humdrum and boring and contribute little to practicing artists. Art books best serve arts appreciation interests.

    How To Become a Successful Artist by Magnus Resch is well documented, and doesn't lie on its premise. But artists be warned: it's not an uplifting read. if you had the idea of becoming successful or sustain a career as an artist, this book will crush you. Statistics are brutal. Your chances of making it in the top tier without being in the right location, nor having the right connections, are close to zero. Don't be fooled by the auctions record sales either. They are highly publicized and do not reflect the reality of the global art market. That is: most artworks sell under $5,000. Half of them under $1,000. A grand once in a while, when everything aligns, won’t get you far. Come to terms with the idea that you likely won't make a living out of it. Keep a job. Then by any means keep doing art, head clear.

    • @contemporaryartissue
      @contemporaryartissue  Рік тому +4

      I believe it is one of the best out there and it paints reality as it is based on thorough research. Making it to the top tiers is of course a very long shot, but that is the case in almost any industry. What we get to see of the art world is indeed just a fraction, the mega galleries, million dollar sales, et cetera. The real art world or art market are normal people, normal collectors, normal gallery directors, et cetera. However, success or earning a living is very plausible when you are doing the right things. It has worked out for me personally, but also the artists I represent and many of those I have advised personally are always climbing the ladder. A work-life-art balance is crucial at start. But with the right mindset, talent, and information, it is very doable to become a parttime artist in two to five years.
