This video wrote my Christmas wish list lol. Minnie saying "Lets talk about creative block, actually let's not" was a big mood 😂. These books sound awesome but I know your book is gonna be my favorite ❤️
This is so fascinating!! Would love a part 2 with reference/inspo books on topics other than anatomy that are more of a compilation than "tutorial" type books.. hope that made sense haha
Perfect timing, I was just looking to treat myself to some art books and supplies! I'm so glad you included books about mindset & career as well! Definitely going to get a few of them ❤️ would love a part 2 as well
This is probably one of the best discussions and informative insights into useful book recommendations and why!! An intelligent approach in a mire of uninformed UA-cam channels. Thank you for your refreshing content.
It really resonated with me when you said it takes courage to put your art out there. I always feel very vulnerable when I show something I've made. Thank you for sharing your wisdom 💖
Exciting list! Makes me want to read a lot more than I am doing right now. The art and fear and the anatomy for the artist books are 2 I definitely want to start with.
Set aside one hour a day to make art, any type. After a month it will be habit and you will drastically increase your output. Family and friends may buy a few pieces off you and your career has begun. I love this channel. So many great ideas. My favorite art books: - Art and Fear by David Bayles - Aviation Art by Lou Drendel - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
I loved this video so much, Minnie. Art and Fear and Big Magic have been pivotal for me, too. Steven Pressfield's The War Of Art, Magnus Resch's How To Be A Successful Artist, and Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit have been essential for me as well. I'm so happy to have discovered your channel. :)
I'm so glad you enjoyed it :) The War of Art has been on my 'to read' list for ages. I'll take this as the push I need to finally get round to reading it! And thank you for the other recommendations, I'll defo check those out 🙌
Definitely a part 2!! Thank you for sharing your reading list and letting us into your mindset, your struggle and journey as an artist. Your content is ever so refreshing! 😍😊
Werner’s nomenclature of colour is the perfect combo of art and science which I’m alway so happy to see. As a science by training and a artist by eternal facinasion I always find people trying to keep the world separated is strange. So much in science is beautiful and often beautiful thing can have huge scientific meaning. In satellite imagery if you process diffrent wave of light correctly they desplay ice crystals in the atmosphere, the system I use made them a beautiful purple swirls across big areas.
I really appreciate this video, because the creative struggle is sooo real. I'm definitely adding a couple of these to my wish list. For now, I've bookmarked Danielle Krysa's classes on Skillshare to watch later.
I stumbled across this video the other day and just had to come back to thank you for such wonderful recommendations. I ordered Art and Fear and Big Magic right after watching and have already read both in the span of 24 hours and can already feel how it is going to change my relationship with my work. I would love a part two should you ever have the opportunity/desire to share! 💖
Thank you for this post. You are so inspiring and I enjoy watching all of your videos, thank you again! I have such passion to start painting with gouache but have a ways to go with practicing color so I am going to start buying all these books ❤️
love this!! i say with a number of still unread art books on my shelf lol. i tried big magic on your recommendation but it wasnt for me, however, i found a book that i think did the same thing for me: the creative path by carolyn schlam. she goes through inspiration, gives unique exercises, talks about techniques, about sharing, about making space for yourself as an artist... the main focus is on the process of painting, which i found so healing in this time of artists (including myself) constantly worrying about getting seen on social media. it also helped me take myself seriously as an artist but in a really chill way, because it made me think and realise that i have things to say and they are worth saying, even if only to myself. so for anyone else out there who didnt vibe with big magic, i highly recommend the creative path :)
Haha I'm the same with unread books 😅😅 There's always room for more! For what it's worth, I tried reading Big Magic twice before it clicked for me the third time (I much preferred it in audiobook form) so it might be worth going back to one day 🤷♀️ Thank you for the Carolyn Schlam recommendation, I'll defo be checking that out, sounds perfect!
Thanks for your recommendations all of them have gone in my wish list but I got the crossroad book straight away lol. You probably have this in your library already as you like to draw buildings: Architectural Style a Visual Guide. I am binging your old content at the moment and I looked up brutalism when you mentioned it in you intober 2017 series. It may be another good inspiration reference for you hopefully. Looking forward to you next video
I would like to add 'Art & Soul, reloaded' to this list by writer Pam Grout. Wonderful inspiring presentation. I am a librarian and enjoyed it and ordered some for the public library in Aruba. Thank you!
I can wait to read the first book, Art and Fear. I have jumped around 6 ideas deciding they're all rubbish. Only now going for gold as I now have just over a week to create and produce four works. Everything you mentioned, yeah I'm experiencing.
Oh Minnie, thank you for sharing the book list that seem to be brilliant, hopefully for me, I am not an artist. I adore your excellent performance and useful info. You are a good artist too. Been following you for a while, I am always so happy to watch you perform, your beautiful performance, excellent English. I hope some of the books are for beginners to, staring with fear at the blank canvas :) Amazon is a bit expensive for delivery to Iceland, but perhaps I am lucky and can buy 1 or two wonderful books that you recommend and describe perfectly. You are always brilliant, Minnie :)
Part 2 would be nice where you could describe about you how or where you have actually put it to use maybe BUT thank you so so soo much for this wonderful video! Ily
There is another excellent book on colour predating the Secret Life of Colour which sounds very similar ' COLOUR ' by Victoria Finlay published in 2002 .
Question for a potential part 2: you mentionned books *about* inspiration, are there some books that make you inspired? My go-to is Tillie Walden's "Mini meditations on creativity". It's an illustrated, curated collection of quotes about creating. Of course, the illustrations are gorgeous, this is Tillie Walden, but it's the curation that I really love about it. She talks about how she wanted to stray from the image of the "lightbulb that lights up above someone's head", and instead wanted to collect quotes about the work and sometimes struggle to put yourself into a creative mindset. It's always on my desk
Oh wow, this book sounds great! I'll have to check it out! Thanks for sharing :) I'll have to think about what I'd include in that category, what a great suggestion. xx
This is so useful, Minnie! :) Thank you very much for sharing your list. I have heard about some of the titles you mentioned but others were completely new to me and I sm definitely curious! I think it would be awesome if you make another video about your favorite books :) Also, please give us an update about your shop. What are you planning about it? I am also really interested in the progress of your book that you mentioned in a previous video. Please update us! :) Keep up the great work!
I'm so happy you enjoyed the video :) And thank you so much for your interest in my shop and book!!! I sent off the first draft of the book last week 🎉🎉 And I'm aiming to have the shop open towards the end of the year or start of next year 🤞🤞 I'll keep you updated!
Thank you such a useful selection as its always difficult to narrow down the wide range of books. Have added them to my amamzon list. Just to let you know you can The secret life of Colour on kindle unlimited for free if it helps. You might want to mention the affliate links at the start as well as I didnt know and ordered during the video. Love you channnel.
