The HotD-costumes are more accurate to the world of Ice and Fire due to their rich colours. Also, LOVE the jewelry and the headwear for women. I think the early GoT-seasons had better costumes when it came to fitting and proper undergarments, but the characters looked so dull when they all dressed in black leather in the later seasons.

There are plenty of costumes I really liked from HotD, but GoT is the gift that keeps on giving. Never before has a TV show inspired my costume designer mind to the point that I have an entire page in my blog solely dedicated to my GoT inspired costumes. Game of Thrones wins all day every day.

I loved HotD but I thing GoT did it better in the sense that it was able to create a greater sense of reality. The fact that the gowns in the royal court were consistent with the queen’s, the gradual evolution of style and the regional styles easily identifiable made it all feel like a real place with real people living in it.
HotD had two major issues for me, I could se little consistency in style between all the different clothing and a few elements looked too modern and out of place

The only thing I didn't like about both of them were the crowns. Except for Aegon's which is decorated with rubies, all the others are rather plain. From Kings and Queens I would expect much richer crowns, especially Cersei's 😂

I hadn't thought of it much but you're 100% correct. The crowns were a huge missed opportunity, especially when it comes to Stannis. The book description is so evocative, it just seems like they could've made something awesome for him. Also, it would've been awesome to see the crowns worn by the various kings it some sort of "crown jewels" room. That would've made a great setting for some scenes that were exposition heavy.

I think the craftmenship of each crown (Especially in game of thrones since they're actually metal) is a way of showing of wealth and status in it's own right. I do understand your point though, and I must admit that I would have liked to see some more stones.

My favorite thing about GoT costumes is the level of thoughtfulness put into them. Why are they these colors? why these fabrics? how would the characters have access to these fabrics/dyes? It makes for a realistic design. I think that most costumes for film/TV are just "let's make this pretty and resemble the era/character". This is not a bad approach, but I feel like the designers never think about the why and how factor of the characters obtaining these garments. That is one thing that makes GoT have the best costumes out of everything I have ever watched. HotD costumes were just spectacular. I love HotD costumes solely for the design aspect. I think these costumes are gorgeous, and very detailed. I do think the fitting issues might have had to do with Covid, perhaps they were unable to get the actors into fittings and such? I am not sure, until there is a statement about how the costume process went during lockdown, it is all just speculation. I have noticed that the fit gets better towards the later half of the season, and it almost seems that the older actors are wearing more period appropriate undergarments, but I am not completely sure. Anyways, just thought I would throw in my two sense as a costumer for theater :)

I liked the high necked gown Raeynera wore during the tourney when Daemon lost to Christmas Cole. But a lot of the gowns fell very flat for me; the Hightower Gown was lovely. The Valaryons wore some lovely golden outfits and Daemons Tourney Armour was amazingly pompous and full of pageantry...but I can't think of much else I enjoyed other than Rae's Dragon Trial Gown....
Game of Thrones was just so iconic and every piece stuck with me. HoTD is a great show however, I won't knock it.

Daemon and Rhaenyra’s tradicional valyrian wedding clothes were it to me. I loved Rhae’s post birth baby blue dress a lot (ep 6), and the cape + hair when she came back to KL in ep 8. My favourites were also Rhaenyra’s tourney dress and the one Alicent wore to the hunt in ep 3 while pregnant, that was so amazing and deliciously medieval/renessaince, I wish all her costumes were like that, cause I feel they made her clothes too modern and common, specially young Alicent’s.

Honestly, I'd love HOTD to be better BUT I get why GOT took the crown.
As just in season 1 alone we've explored multiple parts of both Westeros and Essos, while in HOTD the main focus were Dragonstone as well as King's Landing.
And with HOTD's success, I'm sure we'll get more elaborate costumes with the coming season!

I feel that HotD first season costumes were underwhelming and at times felt too renfaire or costume-y. There are highlights like the fealty gown and Aliceent's green statement gown but on the whole, the season didn't live up to its predecessor for worldbuilding through costume.
Putting aside the ill-fitting tailoring (likely due to covid) and lack of appropriate support garments (which might have been to make the actresses look even younger) it's the bare arms, especially on Rhaenyra's wedding dress, that feel wrong or inaccurate somehow
I think it's the lack of a consistent silhouette and neckline that bothers me the most.
In GoT we see the Japanese-inspired silhouette worn by Cercei for the first few seasons; then, Margery brings a new silhouette and lower neckline to court when she becomes queen. Everyone from Sansa to the background extras wears a variation on what's in popular style depending on whose in power; it's powerful subtle storytelling. Don't see that in HotD. The main female characters float in a fashion void from everyone around them. I guess it's a lack of a consistent neckline and silhouette at court that bothers me. It would have made Aliceent's green dress even more shocking if it completely differed from the pre-established silhouette.

Totally agree, several of the gowns had amazing potential, like the first Alicent dress, but i think that layering would of really helped make them look less costumes, also in the books Rhaenyra is described as being lavish and wearing teh highest fashions and all of her dresses excluding the fealty dress are quite plain in her youth.

what i remember from Got is that allready the Silhouettes and cuts gave so much atmosphere, you knew which dresses were Tully, with the Collars, or Arryn with the crosscut Chest pieces, of Lannister with the Kimono Style gowns, but HotD really has none of them, what comes closest is the Green dress. you wouldn´t even need to go so hard, to Westerosi could have plainer Medieval Clothing and the Targs and Valyrian could have the Silks similair to Danys Dresses in the first season.

I saw a tiktok at one point that said that GOT costumes look like actual clothes while HOTD looks like costumes and the reasoning behind it was a lot to do with layering. There's many times where the costume designer could have layered multiple pieces but instead sewn everything together to create one piece and it gives medieval halloween costume. In addition to that, certain dresses, like Rhaenyra's short sleeve gold dress, would have structurally just looked a lot better if there was just more to it. That dress in particularly doesn't look like it's supposed to be a relaxed fit because there's no structure to the bodice or skirt, it looks like it's ill-fitting. If they'd added a petticoat and either stays, boned the bodice, or just used panelling to make the bodice quite fitted, it wouldn't look like something I could pick up at Spirit Halloween.
Also, this is a problem I have with both shows and I know they had budget restraints and whatever, but nothing takes me out of any form of historical or fantasy costume believability than the very wealthy only having a handful of clothing. While I know the average person may have had one or two changes of clothes, nobility as wealthy as the Targaryen's or any of the Great Houses would have had enough money to rarely repeat outfits. You can't convince me that Cersei and Margaery are the type to ever repeat an outfit and according to the book, Rhaenyra loves splendour in her style. At the very least they could have put more effort into making the same dress look new and fresh through styling.
The Starks are people I also believe Clapton made seem much poorer than they are. While I know the North is a harsh place to live without many resources and they value practicality, the Starks are still a Great House and part of the 1% of Westeros. Even if they wore only leather, fur, and wool they could have easily afforded the best of the best in both materials and tailoring and looked quite wealthy even in their practicality. And regardless of Sansa loving to sew, she likely was having all of her clothes made for her since she's a child and still learning at there's expectations to how they present themselves. When showing in King's Landing in the books, Ned also specifically requests that he have time to change into something not travel worn because he knows appearance does mean something when you're in a position of power (though his sassy glove removal in the show is peak subtle comedy).

    • @Skye_Writer
      @Skye_Writer 2 місяці тому +2

Actually, very wealthy aristocratic and royal families absolutely *did* repeat outfits. It's only in the modern era where we start expecting the celebrities and the royals to never be seen in the same thing twice, and that is because they have been photographed in it and it's in magazines and on websites, so everyone has already seen them in that outfit. That's why it was such a big deal when, after her engagement to William, Kate Middleton was photographed having worn the same dress styled different ways within the same 2-week period.
In the Tudor period, female clothes were actually split into many different parts, and sleeves & foresleeves (false sleeves for the lower arms that were decorative and had ties to attach them to the gown sleeves) were separate so that noblewomen could create different handsome and trendy outfits by mixing and matching these parts. You achieved different looks by switching out the forepart (the piece that shows under the overskirt) and the foresleeves, and by mixing the undergowns and the overgowns.
These clothes were made of silk, velvet, cloth-of-gold/silver, and other materials that were not wash-and-wear material, and in the age before dry-cleaning was a thing, they were simply brushed with the appropriate brushes to get off any dirt or mud and hung back in the closet. The shifts and chemises and other such layers worn next to your skin, _under_ your stays/corsets/bodies, kept your sweat and body oils from making contact with the outer gown, and it was those shifts and chemises that were washed often. Since the clothing itself was so expensive and often took so long make, usually with the lady in question doing all the decorative needlework, you absolutely would wear it more than once to show off your handiwork and the beauty of the garments.

HotD for me, it’s colourful and vibrant, it definitely feels more faithful to the source material. Need to see more of it though, especially their northern costumes. In GoT it’s the worst part - generic boring grey rags for wealthy family. I just hope northern costumes are going to be better. Another thing is armour - despite some amazing details, it’s often very generic in GoT. I especially hate kingsguard armour in GoT, just make it white, HotD proofed it’s possible.
Anyway, I’m in no way professional and I’m not denying the beauty of GoT costume design - it’s still another level, I’m just enjoying HotD more atm. Loved the video, thank you!

HoTD totally failed to create a CULTURE imo, which is what should be central to this type of fantasy-world costume design imo. You can make some pretty individual costumes (even though I thought most of them looked like cheap Party City digs), but have you created a culture? Have you informed the audience of what kind of world this is with your designs? Or did you just have a fun time creating a bunch of varied, pretty costumes that you think would look nice on screen?
HoTD totally dropped the ball in that regard. GoT’s costume design is legendary not because the costumes are just beautiful and well constructed, but because they communicated the culture of this world to the audience perfectly. They *speak.* The world of Game of Thrones informs the costume design, and the costume design in turn informs the world. The costumes are woven into the fabric of the societies and cultures they exist in.
This may be a less whimsical, beautiful, unfettered way of designing costumes. It may be less fun, and there might be things you WISH you could include but the world you’re designing for simply doesn’t allow for it (conjuring to mind the shimmery, slippery-when-wet, *ice skating costume fabric* inexplicably used in some of Alicent’s dresses which was…unhinged), but the cumulative end result is well worth it and far superior to the alternative. It’s strategic, logical, focused, and takes true skill and forethought.
Anyone can design a dozen pretty dresses. Some might be better than others at it, but anyone could technically do it. However, not everyone could do what Michele Clapton did. She accomplished the true, unspoken goal of costume design that lives beneath the surface of “pwetty costumes :3c that not everyone understands and the knowledge of which separates good and adequate from great and legendary-SHE DESIGNED A CULTURE.
Think about this-if I asked some of the commenters here who are no doubt well versed in historical dress what, for instance, a wealthy married woman from England living in the 1880s wore, plenty of people would be able to describe the silhouette, undergarments, and a general outline of clothing that covers pretty much all of the broad strokes.
Now if I ask…what does a noble Targaryen woman from HoTD wear? What is the standard silhouette? What kind of undergarments does she use to create it? Can you name the most trendy type of *sleeve* that this woman might favor? What is the most common shape for skirts? Please tell me, because I have *no goddamn clue.*
Using this comparison really highlights how the GoT costumes are much more true to real life (something the ASoIaF series has always prided itself on-it’s gritty realism and believable world) than the whimsical, chaotic, unhinged, all-over-the-place costumes in HoTD.
I’m sorry Jany but you Just Don’t Have It. This approach worked well for something like Harry Potter but it looks absolutely embarrassing in the world of ASoIaF. Do better or quit.

The thing is that this style of costuming is more accurate to how medieval people wore stuff. Sure there were cultures but you could look at Christian Iberia and all the way to northern France or central Germany and find basically the same style of dresses from the 5th-13th century. Not to mention the armours in HoTD look infinitely better than GoT except for the Kingsguard stuff. Not to mention that the dresses for nobility especially are mostlikely taken from the Byzantines, who were at their time the last vestiges of a once mighty continent spanning empire(Rome).
It may not be worldbuildy, but its historical. And it wouldn't make sense to have many different styles of clothes in what is essentially a time when the seven kingdoms were centralised and basically everyone followed Targaryen trends and also focused on basically one region. Hell this is the same real-world reason as to why people often wore different coats of arms or colours rather than going for silks or unique materials or shapes. T'was just cheaper, more effective, and always in style. And HoTD has shown itself to be more grounded than GoT ever tried to be.

as much as I loved House of the Dragon, the only decently dressed character on the show is Alicent. On the other hand, in Game of Thrones we have Cersei, Margaery and Sansa, who are all icons. Especially Cersei, in earlier season she changed whatever we thought we knew about fashion, the gold and red dress, the armor, the way her hair is styled, pure perfection.

GoT loses simply because of Margaery's "lampshade" costume. It gets -1,000,000,000 points for that abomination.
But when it comes to each series Season One, I still think HotD is the winner, especially where the armor is concerned. Obviously Rhaenyra's costume that is used on all the promo is an absolute standout, but overall I think they just look more "subtle" and sophisticated.
I think the Season One standout for GoT is honestly Dany's Dothraki outfit. It may seem "simple" but I cannot tell you how many times I've heard girls who have seen the episode say something like, "Damn, I wish I had the costume" or "I love that costume/how looks" etc etc. And I agree that is is a great costume.
My main criticism besides the armor (especially the city watch armor) is the over reliance on leather, especially for the male Lannister characters. I know it's a fantasy, but it is based on real life analogues. And leather was simply never used to the extent they use it. Call it nitpicky, but it's just this one man's opinion.

Game of Thrones costuming got worse with time and always had the issue of the showrunners apparently believing that men, in order to be Manly, needed to wear dull grey, brown and black clothes and nothing else. Especially Northmen, who apparently shouldn't even dress as nobles, even when they're one of the oldest Houses in Westeros. Also, for some reason, no one wore any kind of hat or other head covering in spite of the cold and snow.
On the other hand, you had bizarre stuff like Margaery's burrito dress or the Darth Sansa costume (WTF was that?).

It's interesting because I'm a film student and the first thing I said while watching the pilot was how much better the costumes were! Watching the video I can see all the intricacies that have escaped me, but I still prefer HOTD, mostly because of colors and opulence. The jousting armor was superb, and so were all the bright reds and greens. We haven't seen a costume as rich in color as Alicent's green dress in all of GOT. I definitely agree with the conclusion and most of the points you've made in the video, and the armor was way better in GOT for sure! I really do think that a lot of the issues with the costuming in HotD may have been due to the pandemic, and due to such a massive production, a lack of consistent "in-person" communication from team members, which I could potentially see causing some last minute "band-aids" to fix certain issues... I could easily see Rhaenyra's seemingly ill-fitted strapless bra in the first episode as having been done as a less than stellar attempt to bind her chest down, since she's only supposed to be like 14 or something in that episode, as opposed to the 18-19 y/o Millie's portraying during her last appearance on screen. Interviews with the cast and crew have hinted that "people were dropping like flies in the beginning," suggesting that a lot of people either had to quarantine or were actually sick towards the beginning of filming, so I'm just speculating. Regardless, I'm super excited for the second and third (and maybe fourth?) seasons of HotD though, and I hope the costumes continue to evolve and improve from now on, because they definitely had that sense of opulence and wow factor for the most part.

Thank you for this amazing analysis Heidi.
You know my opinion on this theme but again:
There are many pieces on HotD where Temime did a great job, especially with the help of Carragher´s embroidery. I don´t agree with her notion that a prequel is not directly related to the original. What I like about her work were the abundance of color and jewelry. Although she had a bigger team and budget many of the pieces were sloppily executed like ill fitting gowns due to changing undergarnments and lack of proper stays and such and mistakes like poor ironing work or flaking off of paint on crowns. Plus what makes a costume realistic - the breaking down - was missing or not enough. Some cuts and fabric choices seemed too modern.
Clapton used jewelry sparsely but she had more unique pieces. Like you said, you could see which region a person was from before they even spoke and that indicates good research work and thought process before even beginning with the production. I know many didn´t like the more muted colors towards the end but that also tells a story I think.
I can understand Temime´s wish to create something that is her own but she stuck to that to the detriment of the quality imo. She could´ve taken the vibes, styles and themes of the regions and look at what Clapton had created and go from there with the thought process of what would it have looked like 200 years prior with more wealth.

I mean…does that question even merit discussion?
GoT, for all it’s narrative flaws, is (with some exception) a gold standard in costume design and costumes contributing to universe building. I recommend Bernadette Banner’s video discussing how GoT’s costumery is so brilliant regarding world building and narrative coherence. Although it can be painful for me to go back and look at GoT images due to my lasting negative feelings towards the show, I still have immense respect for the majority of Clapton’s costumery, as well as her team’s craftsmanship and attention to fitting and detail.
Meanwhile HotD’s costumes are a mess. There is no narrative cohesion where the costumes are concerns. Along with issues with poor fitting and the materials (fabric types, trims, grommets, etc.) being used not making sense in universe, the costumes are just a mess. There is no defining silhouette nor style. I am frequently baffled looking at these costumes. They have no continuity between each other, are all over the place, and only contribute to the story telling and world building in the most superficial ways. I also find most of the costumes to be ugly, and frequently cringed looking at the costumes in the show.
I apologize for possibly being snippy, but I find HotD to be a complete failure when it comes to costume design, while GoT is a shining example of what every fantasy series should strive towards.
(After watching the video I know you bring up a lot of these points, just in a more calm and polite way 😂)
Despite my ranting, I want to say that as always your analysis is incredible! Amazingly researched, detailed, and presented as always!

As said in the weekly discussions the issues with reusing the dresses and undergarments made me not as thrilled with the HoTD costume wise. GOT costumes also had so many textures used and idk they just seemed more intricate to me vs HoTD and HoTD is the height of the Targaryens so we should see more lush costumes and variety of them in S1.

I much prefer HOTD's costumes because of how rich their materials look, the colors to much and most especially the ornate and bold designs. They are also a lot more accurate (the kingsguard armour) and in my opinion they look a lot more regal and dare I say better. The jewelry too looks great.

GoT Clapton hands down.!! The level of detail, no matter hw small, was considered by Clapton. And it shows. I felt entirely immersed in the storytelling by costume. Carrington's embroidery is exquiste.
I will not except the excuse of filming during covid 19. With the budget Hot D had available to them and a template from it's sequel GoT the lack of attention to detail is inexcusable. I will NEVER forgive the PartyTime quality Valeryon wigs and lack of proper undergarments for the women's costumes. A primary duty for the costume department is to support the story but these deficiencies worked against that primary task.
Michel Clapton GoT is the best!

Game of Thrones is the clear winner - no doubt. Watching GoT for the first time, felt like stepping into a world that - while fantasy - had a reality about it that HotD doesn't have, and this was due in no small part to the costume design. It really felt as though you were watching an immersive historical drama, as opposed to a fantasy show, which is one of the main reasons that the show was such an immense draw for viewers who would not normally watch a fantasy, but were period drama fans - my own mum included, who was one of those people who would never watch or read fantasy, but was completely drawn in by GoT due to ''how real'' everything seemed.
Had HotD come out first, then I very much doubt that it would have attracted the same broad viewership, owing to how elaborate and confused the costumes are. Beautiful - yes - but so obviously part of a world that has that fantastical feeling about it. IMO, when they knew there were going to be quite a few CGI dragons in this series, they should have toned down the costumes to something - while still looking opulent - that had more of an authentic feel.
If I were designing the costumes, I would have taken my main inspiration from GoT and early medieval Europe (Around the time of the Anarchy, as I believe that was what inspired HotD), then made some alterations to show that; yes, we're still in the world of Ice and Fire, but it's a couple of hundred years previous.

I was surprised you went with GoT because they did such a terrible job in the show with colors versus what's described in the books. Colors in GoT were way too muted and there wasn't as big of difference as outlined, just basically, the Starks and north wore furs and leather more than southron people. Since House of the Dragon season 1 is basically only Kings Landing and Dragonstone, which is very close to Kings Landing, the show didn't get the opportunity to show differences in locations like GoT, which again, was pretty weak with just leather and fur for northern people.
I really enjoyed the vibrant colors in the costumes in House of the Dragon and I think they did an excellent job showing the decadence of the times.

I can't agree with that. D&D were ashamed of making a fantasy show and it's obvious in the GoT costumes. Everything is de-fantasy-fied as much as possible whereas HotD revels in its genre. Why exclude seasons 2-8 of GoT? They're as much part of the show as season 1, seems like a decision made to skewer things in favour of GoT because there's just no excuses to be made for its later costume choices. GRRM described the allure of fantasy as "the ruby reds, emerald greens and sapphire blues of fantasy vs the drab supermarket parking lot looks of reality". In that regard, GoT failed.

    • @vivideblois
      @vivideblois Рік тому +3

Hard disagree to most of your points. First it couldn't be fair to HotD to compare it to 8 times the content, how would it even compete ? And while the later seasons were not my favorite in terms of costumes, their were reasons behind the choices, choosing to give everyone of more "military vibes look" isn't completely outlandish.
Second, while in terms of colors and house sigils HotD did do better, if it hadn't nobody would have been able to tell where anyone was from because there's no aesthetic given to any region. In GoT you could look at a character and based on the material and cut make a comfortable guess about were they were from and how important they were. The North had leather and wool with less embellishment and longer skirts for everyone, the Vale had warm decorative silk damasks, Dorne had flowing silks with a lot of skin, the Reach stylized brocades with interesting cut outs, the Iron Islands had leather pants with shorter jackets and limited colors... Where was that in HotD ? The only Westerosi example I can think of is Rhea Royce's leather riding habit/armor.
Not to mention, why are there no trends ? Why are Rhaenys, Laena, Alicent, Rhaenyra,... wearing completely different styles at the same time with no rhyme or reason ? It's distracting as hell, everyone seems to just be wearing there own personal style which is way too modern of a concept. In GoT there were trends as time went on. At the beginning when the 7 kingdoms are rich and Cersei is the trendsetter King's Landing wears the expensive silk kimonos she favors, as well as the complicated braids of hers. When the war takes it's toll and the Tyrell's take over more fitted stylized brocades take over as well as the looser hair that Margery favors. As Winter approaches and war has decimated the economy, people wear more clothes but less colorful ones because of the lack of dyes. The clothes tell the story with the plot.
And I didn't even mention Danny and her incorporation of different style elements from the different cultures she conquers (Dothraki braids, Unsullied like shoulder pads, flowing dresses, fitted dresses,...)

I just can't stand most of the GOT S1 costumes. Not for the women, anyway. The men's stuff looks great, but the women's dresses are just hideous to me except for Dany's wedding dress. The court dresses have no shape to them unless they have a belt on, and most of the women are walking around with a long rectangle of fabric gathered around the neck and then just draped loosely around the body and belted. They are supposed to be palace servants, but they look like they are walking around in beach cover ups. And without any support garments underneath. And when Sansa gets to the court, the whole time I wanted someone to re-tie her dresses so they actually FIT her. Whose idea was it to fix that much material together with just 2 ties? I just...no. The women's costumes and all those gorgeous accessories in HOTD just were so much prettier.
And yeah, I can assure you having tried to do it myself, making a costume for someone else just off their measurements, no matter how extensive those measurements are, is never going to be as accurate as being able to make a mock up and do a fitting with the actual person. It's not enough to say they pulled it off with shows like Andor and Wednesday, because those shows were able to work with modern fabrics, construction techniques, and to be frank, modern fitting guidelines. That's a very different thing from making close-fitting clothing that needs to evoke a historical(ish) time period. That's why the guys costumes fit them better, they would not need to be as close fitting as HOTD's were.
