I want to address something that has been bothering me lately, and that is the repeat comment in some form or another, about .357 Sig ammo price and availability. Paraphrasing 100 comments into one here - ".357 Sig is not available anywhere, and it's two to three times the cost of 9mm so it's useless". My question to these people is - what are you even talking about?! I know that a lot of physical stores do rack up the price because all they offer is generally Federal American Eagle .357 Sig, which is very pricey ammo. But to say that the cartridge is hard to find and to say it's like $60 a box in general, is very factually wrong. Going on ammoseek, there are 5+ pages of .357 Sig for purchase just like any other popular cartridge, and about a dozen of these retailers offer 50 round boxes of .357 Sig for $22 to $25. Also, defensive ammo is often about the same price if not less than 9mm+P defensive ammo. The fact is, .357 Sig is not all that hard to find and not all that expensive. It's not a lot different (at least online) than buying a 50 round box of .357 Magnum for cost and availability, but for whatever reason a lot of people are either seriously misinformed or have an agenda to make it seem as .357 Sig ammo is about as rare and expensive as .455 Webley (5 retailers online averaging about $65-$70).
I really did not touch on the cheap 155 gr .40 S&W round compared to the Xtreme Penetrators as I was hyper focused on comparing the .357 Sig to the .357 Magnum. That being said I feel like the name "Xtreme" is a bit, well....extreme. This .40 S&W round averaged 1,161 FPS/464 FPE, which is lower than the energy of the .357 Sig Xtreme Penetrator (565 FPE) and the .357 Magnum Xtreme Penetrator (546 FPE).
.40 S&W for the win 🥇 😝. Curious if you would do another comparison of the 9mm, .40s&w, .45acp, and .357 Sig against a slightly thicker MDF to simulate going through an arm bone, then the normal 1/4” MDF before gel to simulate a rib sternum shot? Many shots are placed through an arm if an attacker is raising a gun, or shots from an oblique angel if you get the drop on a shooter like at a robbery. Thanks for all you do 💪😎👍!
@@SoWavvyy I know the history. I have bought my first semi-auto a M&P 2.0 4.625 inch barrel 10mm with a Holosun 508T solar panel backup installed using a C&H Precision aluminum mounting plate and stainless steel screws.
I would say this perfectly demonstrates the ACTUAL design parameters of the XP, it's meant to penetrate deeply FOR a round that also leaves a larger wound track than a traditional non-expanding bullet. That 357 Sig XP had a larger wound track by volume than the .40 FMJ for sure.
It's something to consider. I could see it being something that compromises a couple things to make a decent round for dangerous game. But it's hard to say that with something truly large that is charging, that the Xtreme Penetrator would do better. I could see maybe it stopping a black bear better than this .40 S&W, but not a moose!
@@GunSam yeah I would look at it as more of a hunting load than dangerous game defense, with anything weaker than 44 mag. The only thing that could be said, is the Xtreme Penetrator seemed to have more damage. But still, they were more powerful than this .40 so it's hard to say.
@@GunSam My crude but effective tests have really confirmed the 40 for me. Some 9s like +P HST & Gold Dots do fairly well. Same with 45 in shorter barrels the +P HST, Gold Dot is very impressive in the expansion category but shallow penetration, while the Critical Duty is much better on penetration & less on expansion. I just went back to everything 40 again a bit over a year ago. Compact & full size in rotation. Critical Defense & Duty as well as Gold Dots. These 40s so impressed me with consistent expansion, penetration, damage & impact that I just have confidence if I need it to do it's job...it will & do it very well.
That .357 mag was a bit disappointing. It does appear that underwood’s revolver cartridges consistently fall short of their rated velocity and are just overall not at the level of performance we see with other ammunition companies revolver ammunition. Their semi auto ammunition is dialed in though. That was very surprising that cheap off the shelf .40 S&W fmj target loads beat the extreme penetrators.
Watching the outro was a trip down memory lane the jug or not box the ricochet shot mighty fine videos.... thanks for the info on this one and keep up the great work
I am not surprised. The lighter weight, non deforming bullet, had to push less area out of its path then the larger heavier bullet, and was moving at greater velocity. They both delivered approximately the same FTLBs of energy which makes perfect sense as the 357 Sig was designed to mimic the performance of a 125 grain 357 magnum out of a 4 inch barrel, and does so within certain parameters and lighter bullet weights: 115, 124. While the 357 magnum can shoot 180 and even 200 grain hard cast bullets and can achieve far greater power. Actually, the 5 inch barrel was always the sweet spot for 357 magnum revolvers. I always preferred hot loaded 38 Supers, or 9X23 Winchester’s fired out of my 38 Supers to achieve similar results. All of these cartridges mentioned, are perfect examples of what is needed for self defense applications. Thanks for the video.

Speaking of .357 sig......in 2002 a man named Roman Khaimov was suffering a bit of mental illness. I helped him get a psychologist and psychiatrist that didnt help. Because of his confessed desire of mass shooting and he was yet to buy his first gun. Eventually he bought one, a snub sw .357. The duluth, georgia police wouldnt do anything to help us. His wife reported being thrown down the stairs by him a week prior, they didnt arrest. Then he shot 5 shots at her point blank in a toyota corrolla at a stop sign. Speedometer, head rest, front windshield frame and door, 5th shot never found. He went home. She was 100% missed. I refused to teach him any lessons as requested. The duluth police finally took the situation seriously. They had .357 sig. They shot the house with over 450 rounds. 9 neighbors houses were hit. Bullets were bounching off the shingles of the roof. Oh, they also had 5.7 rounds too, new to be introduced at that time. I think mostly it was 5.7 that penetrated the house, surprisingly the 357 sig didnt penetrate the walls very well from angles, they riccoched off the siding. Its a great round but the police circles on all the round holes didnt match penetrations. He spent time in the nearly one sided shoot out in a second story bedroom. Nearly none of hundreds of rounds came into the room in a manner that could have been lethal. They also had some .223, maybe those were bouncing shingles. The wife stayed in the house with the kids after the repairs. Someone had a fully auto .223 as evident in the pattern through the garage. The auto got him through the garage door, hit him about 17 times. The police left 3 gallons of blood on the garage floor and all his skull fragments. On my wifes birthday in Aug. 2002 we cleaned him up for his wife. But those damn .357 sig rounds bounced off that siding, it was the weirdest thing. Oh, this is a story on my channel, called "mad russian." Same audience might enjoy "sexy cindy" story too, also a gun tragedy.
Here's the thing... they work just less than hard cast at penetrating, yet wound cavity is bigger.. they don't have as big of wound cavity as a HP, but Penetrate better.
@@BB-1990 I hunt with a Marlin in 357 mag and have used the 140g EPs, 140 Hornady lever evos and the 140g XTPs.. and from just my field experiences, the EPs do a better job. Ribs or shoulders just don't effect it like they do the EVOs or XTPs.. and a heart shot just turns it in to mush. So what I've seen on the insides is more damage than a HP, with better Penetration. And my Marlin clocks in around 2150fps. The evos don't like anything over 1800 and the XTPs just don't Penetrate.

Aaand, the cheap bulk pack 40 S&W FMJ wins the day for "dangerous game" deep penetration in this comparison. I don't care who you are, that's funny.
Ouch, hey, wait a minute, I've got some of those Underwood Xtreme Penetrators, but only in 380 ACP, Lol.
Tersero en comentar, por favor Sam haz una prueba donde compares diferentes pesos de punta del 357 magnum.
Glad someone is not reviewing the Springfield double stack 1911
👍
👍😊🎯
I see a better wound channel from the .357 Sig. Anyone else note the same?
That's what it looks like to me.

I am so over the hype of the cut off phillips screwdriver. As you have presented here, regular flatnose penetrates better and always has.
Here's the thing... they work just less than hard cast at penetrating, yet wound cavity is bigger.. they don't have as big of wound cavity as a HP, but Penetrate better.
@@indianajets It would be a temporary wound cavity, tissue snaps back, unless you are over 2300fps.
Something is radically wrong when a range ammo 40 goes noticeably further than more powerful cartridges designed for penetration. Shame on Underwood...
Paul Harrells meat target tests are better and way more entertaining
@Robert Watt. As PH himself says if everyone did the same types of tests, what would be the point. The reason I love this channel is because it has created its own unique method that compliments what other channels do.
