  • A short look at what Japanese obis are for, what's on them and why they can be so hard to find. As well as Japanese Elvis Presley albums, I look at a few obis on other artists' albums to explain what information can be found on all obis.

    glad I learned something today, I have a few albums with an Obi. I also learned that hype stickers increase value, and I will double check that, because I always keep them somewhere on or inside the album

    Hi David, good evening, thank you for this informative video about the OBI , i try to get each album with the OBI, hard to get from the '60 ....got some mint copies but without the OBI , thank you, looking forward for the next video :)

      Hi, how are you doing? Well done for finding the mint records. It's harder to find clean covers, though. Don't you think? Especially the gatefold covers. They can get badly stained on the inside. All the best for 2021!

      I may have been filming it the very moment you were checking 😄 At some point, I'd like to do a video explaining some of the blurb on the obis as well as some of the different album and song titles which are often different in Japanese. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks David. This now gives me a much better understanding of the OBI and how it relates to the album. I do love the Obi's, but some covers fair better than others when it comes to overall appearance. All the best.

      These days record companies design the obi so that it blends in with the cover. You can see it with CDs too.

    I have arund +50 Japanese CDs , all have obi on them. Found them in those pirated dvd shops scattered around Toronto Chinatowns. Strange as it might sound, I did and they ARE authentic, all sealed. I opened a few and was tempted to throw the obis away since they got in the way wih the artwork too much and nothing to hold them down. I could do it with the Laserdiscs since they have plastic covers , or even manga , when they al least wrap around the cover jackets/sleeves. But nothing work with CDs , so I did throw away a few of them. Later on when we got easier access to digital musics , I rarely open another sealed CD. Whenever I wanna look inside a manual I hope someone would scan it online for me. It sucks but seriously I don't wanna throw obi away anymore and still can't find a way to make it work with a piece of paper outside a jewel case.

      Lucky finds. A lot of Japanese overstocks end up in China so perhaps they made their way to Canada via China. With most CD obis, you can slip them inside the booklet. They're usually small enough to avoid getting creased by the case at the top and bottom. Some people stick them to the jewel case with tape but after a while the tape turns yellow and it looks a mess. The best thing to do is get some of those plastic, resealable CD covers. That way you can keep the obi on the outside of the box. Thanks for watching.

      Wow, that's some collection. It would take a great deal of time, effort and money to get them all even in Japan. I don't know what I could tell you about them that you don't already know. None of them were on catalog anymore by 1971, that much I do know. If there's anything in particular you wanted to know, just ask. Thanks for watching and all the best for 2021!

    haha i don’t really collect vintage vinyls but some of my kpop cds (japan releases) have these so i was wondering what the importance of them were. i didn’t realize they’re the same as the ones that come with japanese books as well. thanks for the informative video!! i def prefer keeping them on + also buying older albums that come with all their original inclusions (stickers on wrappings) so it hurts my heart when people just throw them away 😭

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  2 роки тому

      Yes, always a good idea to keep the obi. Sadly, folks in Japan usually didn't do that back in the 1960s. Thanks for watching!

    A very interesting video didn't realize they were (OBI) so important . So finding a album with a obi makes it worth more to collectors, does a album with a hype sticker and a obi make it more collectable? Keep the videos coming learning with each one thankyou.

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  3 роки тому +2

      You never get albums with both hype sticker and obi. I recall only one Japanese Elvis LP that was released with a hype sticker and no obi. That was This is Elvis. All the others came with just an obi as far as I know, but I've yet to see an obi for several of the '50s albums. Even in photographs. Thanks for watching!

    I just bought a sealed Bob Dylan Blond on Blond LP Japanese press with OB. I'm not sure if this is a 69' version or not as I believe the Japan press was first issued in 1969. The OB has no barcode so that's good. Any ideas on how to tell the date of this item?

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  Рік тому

      I'm no expert on Dylan's Japanese records but, as far as I know, if it has the orange and white obi and the SONP cat # prefix, it will be the one that, as you say, was first issued in 1969.

    Music 🎼 🎶 🎵 question 🙋‍♂️ 🙋 i have alot of Japan 🇯🇵 album and the front and the back and right side and the cd 💿 disc is in English and same thing that goes with the recording artist like feeder and foo fighters because they sang the album how they recorded the album but my question 🙋‍♂️ is how come when you buy a Japan 🇯🇵 album from a USA 🇺🇸 recording artist the front the back and the right of the cd 💿 and the cd 💿 is in English but lyric booklet is in both English and Japanese?

    • @ElvisPresleyInJapan
      @ElvisPresleyInJapan  3 роки тому +1

      That's a good question. In Japan, they've always released albums by non-Japanese artists with front covers using the language of the artist, i.e., English, French or whatever. This goes right back to the early days of vinyl. Japanese people can actually find all the information they need (who it's by, what songs are on the album, etc.) somewhere on the outside of the release, for instance on the obi or on the back cover. So there was no need to go to the trouble of changing the front cover text to Japanese. Also, to the Japanese, Foo Fighters or Feeder or whatever looks cooler in the original English, rather than in Japanese. So I think they went for a combination of a product that looks good and that also gives the consumer the info they need to decide whether they want to buy it or not.
      As for the discs themselves having English text on them, I guess this is just a practical thing. All those titles, composer names and publishing company names need translating into Japanese which takes time and effort so I imagine it would be easier just to copy and paste the information the English company would already have in English.
      Sorry for the drawn-out answer. I hope it's of some help. Cheers.
