    Just placed another order yesterday on MION for some sweet Jazz titles. Great and responsive customer service, became a convert. Shipping is also what gets me with this crowd, I usually select the cheapest option to save few more $$ along the way, but mine arrive consistently between 2-3 days, it's like buying local...it's mental!

    Love the M50 poster in the background. I would think using a streaming file against Japanese vinyl is an odd review. Wouldn't it be a more accurate comparison to use say an American press not a thin compressed digital file that would have lack of bass and mids too. I've heard bass is lowed in Japanese pressings because of close living quarters and a cultural thing about noise.

    Thanks for the video and heads up on Mion Records. I recently purchased a stack of records in Japan from Disk Union in Tokyo. I found the quality of there used records to be in much better condition to anything I can find used here at home in Sydney Australia, the sound quality was very good and as you have stated the Japanese records have a lower noise floor than many other pressings I’ve heard. The Japanese also take extremely good care of there records - so the jackets are also in mint condition as well. I also liked the records you chose to review, good selection. Thanks.

    Appreciate the effort and expertise, but shouldn’t you be comparing Japanese vinyl to US vinyl? Like how do vintage Japanese pressings compare to current Blue Note Tone Poet remasters? I have found those Japanese pressings to be lacking in bass

    I've never had negative sonic experiences with Japanese pressings, though I've probably only had 10 or 20 and I don't compare pressings. As far as VG+ records sounding like NM, they're supposed to (via Goldmine). The difference is in visual appearance.
    Cheers, Tom

    Really you want to buy by region of the artist. While the Japanese pressing is usually on top notch virgin vinyl, they tend to get Multi generation masters and have to goose the top end. In trying to bring back in the loss of the top transients by eq you loose much of the bass & lose the balance or beloved warmth in the midrange. Bass and treble loss is also common with analog tape transfers with increased SNR ratios. Especially if they copied to a lesser production tape like going 30ips to a 15ips. Even the highest quality 1:1 comes with loss. Thanks for the comparison but without comparing to other pressings you haven't really done a "vinyl" comparison. Much of what you said here about the loss of the brilliance of the sound or detail can be chalked up to inferior sources used on Japanese vinyl pressings.

    I clean all my records ultrasonically, which removes an impressive amount of noisy crud (dust, debris, detritus) from even brand new records (especially those that came in paper sleeves). But -- and this is only an anecdotal generalization -- I have found vintage Japanese pressings (I have maybe a hundred or so) to be quieter than even brand new "audiophile" pressings on major labels (like Blue Note or OJC). You can always EQ if you think the Japanese versions are thin on the low end. But it's tough to erase ticks, pops and scratches without some kind of "impulse noise reduction system" that also degrades fidelity...

    • @spinzvinyl
      @spinzvinyl  2 місяці тому

      Couldn’t agree more with everything you said. I think I’ve only been disappointed once or twice by a Japanese pressing. Overall there’s a lot to love! Thanks so much for watching!

    I found your presentation very informative but wished you had included a few more "rock" oriented Japanese pressings from the early 80's such as "Who's Next". No one ever includes this pressing when doing a shoot out of this particular LP. Usually it's the original British Track, U.S. Decca pressings from the East and West Coast, the Classic Records version or the 180 gram MCA that came out in the 80's or 90's (not sure on that one). The Polydor Japanese pressing from 1981 is never included. I have many Japanese pressings such as "Bare Trees" Fleetwood Mac, "Disraeli Gears" Cream, "Again" Buffalo Springfield, Albert King "Born Under a Bad Sign" which I believe are quite rare and fairly desirable. I find them extraordinary, and I have a fairly revealing turntable, a Linn Sondek LP12. But again, thanks for the input. Oh yes, I have a Japanese pressing of Giant Steps John Coltrane. Unbelievable.

      Hey, thanks for your comment! Maybe I will try to do "Who's Next" in the future. It's a fantastic album and I think it would be a great one for which to do a shootout. Not all of my Japanese pressings still have the OBI strip but this one does. It is a beautiful grey OBI with Japanese lettering going down the strip. At the top it states "Pick Up Your Music with a "check mark/arrow". Then below that it says "JAZZ-FOREVER EXCELLENT". It is the green and blue Atlantic label and has the code P7502-A above the "STEREO" moniker. It also has the inner double folded sheet all in Japanese. I'm not sure what year pressing it is. I should also mention I have "Stitt Plays Bird" and "Blues and the Abstract Truth", Japanese pressings.@@spinzvinyl

      I have the Japanese press of
      Bare Trees and my UK first press sounds way better. I've heard the Japanese press of who's next, I would take the first uk press anyway. Honerable mention goes to the first press German pressing. Sounds just as good as the uk, but costs wayyyy less. Had a huge collection of Japanese pressings, but as the quality of my system grew, the worse they sound.

    • @spinzvinyl
      @spinzvinyl  4 місяці тому

      @@devildart Thanks for sharing your experience on this! Most of my Japanese pressings are jazz. My experience so far has been that jazz recordings tend to sound more true to US pressings than, say, rock albums. Some Japanese pressings were done from metal parts shipped over from the US or UK, but many were done from lower quality tape dubs. There are probably general rules around which labels and eras were better mastered than others, but my guess is a lot of it is a case by case basis.
      Many of my Beatles albums are Japanese EAS series pressings. Some are good, some are terrible. I also have OP and AP reissues of "Revolver" (I did a shootout video here: ua-cam.com/video/pq34AT2TlLM/v-deo.html)
      I personally steer away from Japanese pressings of rock albums in general (although I do show some in this video mostly to provide contrast) unless there is a particularly good sounding pressing, or a cool obi strip or something. I think the Velvet Underground sounds good, but the Led Zeppelin is just ok. The Doors might also leave a little to be desired.
      Anyway, it's fun chatting with you about it! Thanks for your comment and don't be a stranger!

    Hello I've purchased hundreds of records out of Japan over the last 15 years and I have learned a lot during this time The original Japanese pressings are superior to the North American pressings and most times UK pressings.
    if you buy the Japanese reissues they will be little bright sounding and base shy. Like reissues do from other countries as well.
    you always want the original recording that is always your best sounding version. The JVC super vinyl is very quiet and resistant to scratches and scuffs.
    That's why older Japanese records look so nice. Also the Japanese are very conservative in their grading. Anything EX or better will always be near mint.

    • @spinzvinyl
      @spinzvinyl  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience! Always a pleasure to hear from another Japanese vinyl enthusiast! I agree with you on all counts. It's difficult to impart upon people just how right you are about the conservative grading that comes out of Japan. I'm never disappointed.
      To add to your fantastic comments, I also understand that in some cases US vinyl was exported to Japan and are only "Japanese" in so far as the jacket, inserts, etc are concerned. I know that this happened specifically in the case of some Blue Note pressings.

    On Zepplin: I bought zep 2. Zep4, of the the re-release they are absolutely shrill with a narrow sound stage. I went back to my US pressing from the 70's they were actually listenable. I dont really know what Jimmy Page was thinking during this remix? I Decided not to buy any new zeppelin. The Steely Dan Aja is not much better. The best pressing is the original early US pressing. The new MSFL is really good but expensive.

    • @spinzvinyl
      @spinzvinyl  4 місяці тому

      Interesting. Yeah, I've seen that overall the Jimmy Page remasters are not well regarded. I don't have a problem with LZ1 but I haven't heard the others, and I haven't heard any on vinyl. It's too bad, modern audiophile pressings would be awesome if they could do them right. I've heard all good things about the MSFL Aja. I have a hard time buying expensive audiophile pressings unless they're significantly better than an original, but that's just me. Thanks for weighing in on this! Great comment!!!

    Not a great way to compare Japanese pressings. Comparing them to SPOTIFY? Wtf? Laughable. Why not compare them to US or UK pressings.

    • @ricefieldrecords
      @ricefieldrecords 4 місяці тому +1

      @jonliapis538 Why not compare to Spotify digital? US/UK original tape recordings dominate the Spotify libraries. Can the human ear really parse out those miniscule differences between Spotify and the OG US/UK pressings? And besides, if those vintage UK/US original pressings were overplayed by previous owners who used older stylii, then surface noise would color the whole test. Not to mention the cost to procure those early pressings to do this sort of bake-off.
