- In this quick tutorial we will use cloth simulation in Blender 2.80 to create this effect from the Ghost In The Shell title sequences where some white goo peels off this robot girl's face.
There is a also a 45 minute version that goes into more detail and is more beginner friendly:

Hey all, this is a fast version of my Ghost In The Shell tutorial. If you want the slower more beginner friendly version, theres a link in the description. I'm going to keep going with the long form tutorials but if you like this format too please let me know in the comments. Later!
Its okay fast version makes its quick and easy as long as we can see what you're clicking at.
Totally enjoining that and thanks for long vdeo too
Personally, enjoy the long tutorials way more than the fast ones. That's why yours and Midge's videos are always a must see for me, I love when artists go in-depth about their workflow and technique. As someone who's been doing both 3d and 2d design as a hobby for years now, the most important thing a beginner could learn is the correct technique for doing things. This will allow for free experimentation and development of your own style. These short tutorials are good for reproducing an effect, but I feel they lack your personal insight into the process. That's just my opinion though.
I do love both of them. As a not-beginner-anymore-but-definitely-not-pro guy who knows his way around Blender, I could completely understand what you were doing and will probably try it out later this week. I'd go to the long one for more indepth.
Of course, this does require more editing on your part. If I had to choose, it'd be the long one. Just additional info is always pleasant.
Thanks for the hard work. Keep it up. :)
Both are super great ! Depends on your need, but with the combination of both long and short, you can easily reach any level and any need. Great job !
I really like the format of the quick tutorials, which are good for gleaning the basic ideas. And it *really* makes me want to check the longer-form one! They make excellent advertisements for the full tutorial!
"turn off physics." I feel like this is too much power for me to handle properly.
But with your surname you should have a good handle on physics right? :)
:)
Everyone doing the fast trend needs to follow your lead. The slow version teaches, and the fast version reminds you of the main steps!
I love that this proves how well designed 2.8 is that if you know you're doing, you can do it this fast!
Thank you for this fast version, now that I know what to expect I’ll watch the slow one
Ducky 3D you suck
Ducky 3D I’m just kidding I love you please love me back
Ducky 3D also I have done all your tutorials and now I feel better about life so thanks for that
Casey Gray haha hay man
:)
Nice. Blender tuts should all be fast like this and those lazy tutorials. With detailed ones following later, lol
Please do more like this, with 2.8 I understand new people are moving to blender but it's like all I'm seeing are beginner tutorials. This was fast and full of information with no hand holding and didn't put me to sleep, thank you.
I really liked this principle of producing a fast and slow tutorial. This way the intermediate don‘t get bored.
Hey, the fast/lazy/quickndirty/ tutorials are awesome! I value these more than the long tutorials that I tend to skim and then give up because I'm lazy and impatient (and I like to think that lazy/impatient represents a large portion of the people flying by on the internet).
fast tutorial are the best it makes the software feel easier to use
Wow, I hope "fast version" becomes trendy..So much more fun following it this way.
BTW, I work with Blender for 8 years and I had no idea it could do this, so cool!
Wow......awe...some.....
Thank you master !
that is cool, thank you
YES! More of this kind of quick tutorial!
thanks!!
cloth simulation never behaved right with the explode modifier, but I found some nice work-arounds.
You can create an inverse of the pinned group by flipping the min and max values of the vertex weight proximity, and then use that to control the density of a particle system (that controls the explode modifier). (so instead of pinning the rest of the head, you're setting a positive mask of the area you're flaking off)
Since I'm trying to disintegrate a rigged head with hair, right now I'm messing with trying to disintegrate the hair. Mixed results with doing nodes, and not sure this method will work super well if the particle count isn't high enough (relying on children might result in flying clumps, or just weird glitchiness)
Subscribed! *AWESOME* Tut...crisp and clear...everyone should take note on how this is done and executed. Well done sir!
two words, Silent Hill :D
Love this fast and condensed tutorial. Thanks!!
Love your long version and this is a great supplement to it. Thank you!!
I like the dual FAST\LONG format!
Tnx, useful
GENIUS!
Really awesome. More !
Well fast tutorials are meant for advance blender users only... But the slower versions are meant for both beginners, intermediates and advanced users... So I suggest you make the longer tutorials.. We enjoy it best. Peace! ✌️
He made both. Even better.
Thank you so much, this one is great!
Awesome!
UA-cam's boy algo didnt notice this channel yet!
can do a tutorial ..
sandy island in sea with waves simulation ( NOT REALISTIC NOT PARTICLES, low-poly NOT low-poly style .. in EEVEE )
can do this ?
Welcome aboard to fast tutorial train, dude! I really glad that this is a trend now.
does not work, I pressed the same buttons as the author, I tried 5 times in a row, nothing works, possibly due to the fact that the version is newer
My force field isn't working, can you help me?
Awesome tutorial Dylan Neil. You made me subscribe, looking forward to see more awesome tutorials from you.
any idea on how to randomize the size of the flakes? sadly there is no control over the explosion modifier
The best thanks a lot
thanks so much for this version, love the fast paced ones
Say i wanted this to use for paint flaking off a wall how would i stop all of the wall flaking off and have parts remain so i can have a wall texure underneath?
Thanks
Woooow!!!
Superior well i will reduce its speed first and follow. 😁
i like the fast versions more than the slow ones because i think there are enough beginner tutorials out there, what we are missing are intermediate/pro ones. i think ill upload a pro tutorial too in the future
dank
I know this has truly nothing to do with what I'm about to ask. However, judging by the looks of it,it actually kidna seems like. Can this technique be used for cloth teraing/ripping as well? Cuz if so that'd be great. However i have a little question about it. What if i don't what the whole cloth object to rip but just a part of it? I'd be really greatful if someone answers me cuz all this is looks very intriguing to me,but I'd like to know more about it, before give it a try
This alembic file is not working
You and Ian sound the same.
Wow really cool effect..Nice tut
This short version is meant for semi-veterans👌
was it that easy?? :o
awesome tutorials, keep it up!✌🏻
Great! thx
The end result is really stunning!
can the flakes fade away?
I like both formats....long to understand, quick to follow while practicing. More work for you, though :-(
very cool!
Whoa, because of this, I forgive you for not making the tutorial explaining how to save the exr files in your AOV passes tutorial...I'm hoping when I try to recreate this for a device there's no step missing, bruh...of I'm gonna ask for my like back.
so far😍

2.6K likes?? wow you should get much more for such great idea! thanks
Cool!!
nice
I don't know if you do the fast Version seriously or not but I think it's very useful for advanced user which don't want to watch 35 min of vidéo explaining how to use cloth sim but just want to see the global workflow to then adapt it to their own projects.
playback speed at 0.25 and still pausing and going back
thank you very much ,i am new to blender and always wanted to do something like this to impress my friends
Watching this at 0.5x speed makes it just about perfect! Thanks for this, I had no idea this was at all possible in Blender.
i'm a begginer in blender have only a week or so in it and i could follow this tutorial easily provided i paused a few time to look for the correct setting changed the values and adjusted stuff but it's great thanks alot for sharing your knowledge
Epic! First video i saw of yours and you got a new subscriber!
all tutorials should have a fast and a detailed version, i prefer the fast over anything, but if i need a bit of explication i will look at the detailed one as well. great job. I hope there will be more simple and fast tutorials.
Wow! Really cool! I’ve to try to do the same ! Awesome 🤩
I've got no time for long tutorials so I really appreciate this new trend of short and condensed ones. They are perfect for people who are at an intermediate level and don't require explanations for every little thing. I really just want to know what general steps where needed to create that since I didn't know about the Explode and Weight Proximity modifiers.
Honestly, I was interested when I saw the previous video in my subscriptions but it was so damn long that I didn't even open it and instead just hid it away. I would be really grateful if you kept releasing short ones like this in the future. I almost never watch anything longer than 15 minutes, and every video I watch is sped up by 1.5 - 2 to waste less time. I reckon I'm not the only one.
Inspired by Ian Hubert or CG matter.
Oh these fast tutorials are awesome
wow, I wasn't expecting that :)
OMG THIS FORMAT IS THE BEST LITERALLY LOVE THE BLENDER COMMUNITY RN
Please do more effects and physics
could you do an updated version? ^^
Looks amazing, that's awesome
These short tuts are the future. It's like youre targeting all levels. Nice
Wow! Brilliant 😀 Thank you for this!🙏
I like having both the fast and slow tutorials
Catching up with the times, eh? Awesome!
Thank you for sharing these tuts, Dylan!
Its fantastic!!!
This is an awesome video!
F*cking amazing. :)
