He was still in a state of shock. I honestly don’t know how anyone would not understand that. Paul was never one to cry in public or be overtly emotional before the cameras.
He was in shock and regret about not having their closeness again. It was too brutal and he had to walk away when the guy said ... something about a bummer.
He also may have thought that any of the people in the crowd might shoot him at any moment.. I think it's pretty brave of him to hang around and say anything to anyone. Jeez.. Give the guy a break..
"Paul was criticized for giving the press a cold statement..." His friend and colleague for so many years had just been gunned down and mics were being thrust in his face as he was asked stupid questions. What did the vultures expect?
Paul was still going through the seven stages of grieving and his statement may have had some denial in it. If ever there is a time when Paul can not come up with the perfect lyric it could be the day his lifelong friend is murdered.
Could you "imagine" the crowd reaction if they did show up at SNL? Even if they didn't play anything, it would have been incredible to see them together one more time.
Paul and John were so close for so many years. When Lennon was shot, it's quite possible that Paul knew he couldn't talk to the press without breaking up, so he avoided them. The press is often too aggressive with people as well known as the Beatles.
That happened to me with a friend of mine. He connected after he passed . He was 44. A hell of a lead . He taught me guitar. Knew all on The Beatles! Charles Maldera. I was 46! He was my little brother! Rest well Charles! Miss ya! All those happy years that use to be! My friend & brother! See ya in my dreams!
The song that really made McCartney cry was John Lennon's "Beautifiul Boy". In a televised interview for BBC Radio's "Desert Island Disks", he selected the song and visibly broke down as it played, folding his arms, biting his lip, looking away from the camera, and swaying from side to side in his chair until the the camera panned away to spare his embarrassment. The song includes the words "every day, in every way, it's getting better and better", which were Lennon's last words to McCartney not long before he was murdered.
His Last Words to Paul Were something like "Think of me every now and then my old friend". Words of a True Friend...and I would like to believe they will remain Friends through all of Eternity. We are all Blessed to have recieved a "Huge Slice of That Partnership" through all the Lovely Words that they formed into Beautiful Songs...that surely "Will Last Through Eternity" ! 😇💕
Paul is british, He doesn’t show his emotions in public during those times. For all we know he must have been on denial that it was true. He had to process it first or ask the other Beatles first. Imagine yourself being asked, shoved microphones on your face asking you what can you say about your dad or your husband’s sudden death. It was sudden. It’s hard to process and accept that it’s true. It’s real. They had bitter split but they love each other. They were happy as kids and young man until their manager passed suddenly too.
The narrator said with the world was in shock, but Paul, his longtime friend, massive music collaborator and band mate isn't supposed to be in shock???? Everyone doesn't react the same after hearing traumatic and shocking news and to criticize Paul in that moment, was very ignorant & cruel! Perkins woke up in the middle of the night with those lyrics to My old Friend! There is no doubt that John channeled Carl for Paul. What an amazing connection!
I believe that song was absolutely channeled from John to Paul. What a lovely story. So many people wanted to see them together just one more time. Wouldn’t that have been amazing? 💕😪
Oh God, now i am sitting here blubbing... so touching, so sad, but so glad that Paul got that message from John and i don't doubt for one minute that it came from him...
The passing of my wife makes me think of her and everything. I say it long to her if ever, I would leave you a few weeks before she passed away, and I always thought of her like that she was my princess.
What a beautiful song!! I also believe it was channeled through John. They had a special bond which was unique in the music industry in the late 50’s. They changed the world of music that can never be compared or forgotten. Each one of them brought their own unique talents. Thank God we still have their music.
The thing is, over a lifetime time, that type of separation can happen in friendships. I believe it is not uncommon for friends to drift apart over a long period of time. It is just a part of life.
True … it happened in my life … perhaps because old friends can get so close that we eventually become … with all the protocol barriers let down … annoyed and annoying.
Yes, it does happen, it happened to me. It is heartbreaking, but life interferes and people drift apart. I tried to reconnect with my old friend, but my attempt was not reciprocated.
@@ladymarjorie3777 thank you for your comment. I can feel the sadness in your comment. Grief from the losses in our lives, is probably the toughest thing about being alive.
Best friends often separate after one or both get married. The best man at my wedding got married himself. I was never invited to the wedding, and only found out years later from someone. I have only seen him once or twice in 25 years or more, and then for only perhaps 5 minutes. You never know someone until you know they were a complete pos all along. I deeply regret ever becoming friends with someone who turned out to be a cold hearted asshole, possibly due to a controlling wife.
@hitPaulmccartney5ontele_gram My view is this: For many years now, whenever some tragedy falls upon people, there is always some media individual there, putting a microphone in people's faces, asking them how they feel. Good grief! These people are in shock, with loved ones seriously harmed or killed. They do not need microphones in their faces, nor do they need strangers asking ridiculous questions. Whether the person is famous or not, they need to be given proper regard. This kind of exploitation is reprehensible.
There is something to be said about not leaving things too late, to make it up with an old friend. As long as it doesn't tale you to the reason why you broke up your friendship -
A long time ago I was an announcer for a Radio Station KVLY in South Texas. I worked the overnight shift. When I reached the lobby it was dark with just a candle. Went to the recording studio and another candle. The evening announcer Don Crow burst out “John Lennon got shot and he is dead.” I didn’t react and went about my business. Sometimes amidst tragedy the brain filters things out. Don knew I loved John and Paul’s work. My memory if correct would show me that night as, so what. I deeply loved the lads and perhaps some day I’ll see them again yonder where things are better.
I'm a huge 'Beatles" fan ever since "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and I never heard this story. I was aware of the close friendship between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Their friendship seems a bitter sweet ending after the death of John Lennon. Very sad.
@@optimusprime732able Yoko Ono was not very well liked by most people, especially by Beatles fans. She tried to control every aspect of his life. Example: None of the Beatles's wives were not ever allowed in their recording studio while they were recording their songs. Ringo Starr's wife and Paul McCartney's wife understood the importance of that rule but not Yoko. She demanded to sit in on their recording sessions right next to John Lennon and would openly critique what she thought was wrong with a particular song and often disrupted the Beatles sessions. There was an incident when John Lennon tried to make her stay home while the band was recording Abby Road. But she got so angry that she actually tied herself to a fence that was near the studio and screamed, causing so much disruption to the whole area until John had to let her inside the studio. Eventually her shameful and shameless behavior caused serious descention among the other members of the band, especially Paul McCartney and Richard Starkey that they parted ways and broke up forever. She also isolated him from his son, Julian and family. She was a very controlling and disgraceful woman who not many people like to this day. I never liked her. And I felt very sad for his son, Julian who she refused John to even acknowledge as his son.
You can tell how much he liked George Harrison too, when they did the Carl Perkins & Friends concert in the mid 80's with other guest artists. George was a big fan of Carl's growing up, as was Ringo. I think Carl was thrilled that the Beatles, in their prime, played some of his rockabilly music.
My heart breaks for Paul. The most generous and warm of them all. He has always been selfless. McCartney 3 is a great record if you want to really hear the pain that he still lives with.
The media seldom got anything right when talking about the Beatles. I loved them at first sight and song. John and George were my crushes. John's biting wit captured my 13 year old heart❤ George was so shy.... I always thought Paul was so full of himself and Ringo... I never really paid attention to him until late in life. He's a gem❤
Definitely and it was completely normal. I didn't believe it myself. Senseless act of horror by a sick individual who should never be paroled. Paul remains by favorite Beatle.
The news of John's death came as breaking news during the Tonight Show. The next evening a friend and i went to the Dakota. Outside of the entrance gate people started leaving flowers and things. We didn't have anything to leave. The only store open nearby was a fruit stand so I bought a green apple and put it on top of the pile. I still see it when they show old news clips of the people gathered outside the Dakota on that sad, sad day.
Beautiful video and makes us realise what gifts we were given by Paul and John, if indeed it was ever doubted and such a wonderful touch the words from the universe via Carl!
@AndersonSmith-kk8vr Well, funny you mentioned that because I am working on an art project about that very topic but it's going to be expressed in a very original way. I'm going up to New York City next month to have a gallery take a peek at my new collection. I don't know what they will say but I know I've done something different and I'm glad about it. Where are you writing from? It looks European but you sound American.
Paul and John were as close as two people can be. They started from nothing and changed the world together. In a normal lifespan, there was plenty of time to let things settle. That’s all they needed. MDC and a handgun took it all away.
I was a US Navy Corpsman stationed at Camp Lejeune in 1980. I was 28 years old. When I heard of John's passing 😢. My first response was to call my best friend. I'm 70 years old now. Still haunts me every day 😢. Peace ✌️ to all!
Exactly, we don't know how their "rift" would have healed over the years. I mean, Lennon died only 10 years after the "divorce". They simply didn't have time to heal, but I think they would have.
This was magic to find this gem out about McCartney and Lennon. I would have loved to have seen these 2 just show up at SNL to collect that $3,000 check. That would've been one epic moment 4-Sure. Fate had it that them getting together was just not to be. What a legacy that's left to the world, and for generations 100 yrs. from now can enjoy both on video and audio. Peace Out.
The skit on SNL was George Harrison was the musical guest that night and Lorne Michaels joked that Michaels expected all the Beatles would have to show up for the $4000 so he'd only give Harrison 1/4 of that. Probably because GH was scheduled to be on that's the only reason John and Paul had their TV turned on and heard the offer.
@@dannyvine3605 I heard another version long ago of the story. But in that story, all four of them had gathered at John's apartment. Lorne repeated the offer on air and they all hopped in a car to go down there. But they got lost and went back to the apartment. Beatles stories seem to be like that - they change as to who is telling them. But it was at the time of the Saturday Night Live show offer when they were getting all kinds of offers. They had insisted they would NOT do it just for money. The biggest at that time was something ridiculous like 5 million (I even want to say $500 million, but at the time, those amounts for singing a few songs was super ridiculous) from Lew Grade. Doing SNL would have been so like them.
@@karenp1687 The version I gave I read somewhere from an interview with Paul. He mentions them being "too tired" due to drinking wine and smoking dope. The Beatles were offered £2 million ($4 million) in 1969 to do 13 USA shows. Then again in 1976 they were offered in the region of $30 million. According to the Beatles promoter, Sid Bernstein, John considered the latter offer then changed his mind. Paul wanted to do the 1969 shows because he felt the Beatles had lost their audience, but did not want to do the 1976 shows (not surprising as he was doing tours with Wings). George and Ringo I am not sure of their replies. Probably waiting for John's reply?
"Some guy turns up at the door". Some guy, huh? Lennon was a sob, but I have to think that Yoko was worried Paul was stealing John away and planted that bad seed. Paul was on top of the music scene while John was absent. So Paul was probably stopping by for charitable reasons as I'm sure he was concerned about John's mental state. And he had good reason to be concerned wondering how John was dealing with Yoko's mind games.
The original Paul died. The new Paul was not as close with John. How come Sir Paul seems to have blue eyes? And his ears don't stick out as much as they used to.
@@SusanGoldberg-l9p - I didn't think there were any brain rots left posting these Paul comments that have not aged well. Tell Elvis hello as I'm sure he must be staying at your house too.
I think you are right and I thought that same thing. JL was basically a househusband and sort of getting stale with the whole music scene. I think McCartney just wanted to get him a little more enthusiastic about music. Plus, he genuinely cared about him. I was sort of like that with a guy that I played in a band with for over twenty years, who died of pancreatitis last year. You can be close than brothers at times, when you are involved in music.
They were fine...this intense rivalry everyone talks about only lasted a couple of years. They only met up a few times after not because of any animosity, but because they both had other priorities. Their families, their own careers. It's like moving out of your parents house. Its not like you feel any less about your brothers and sisters, but youre obviously not going to see them as often anymore. Paul and John were just as close as ever when they almost appeared on SNL, they just had other things going on. Me and my husband had to tell one of his friends that hes had since high school to stop just turning up at our door and to call first because well, WE WERE MARRIED and sometimes dont want him randomly there or god forbid while were in the middle of some...marital times. John had a baby that he was taking care of full time, something that he wasnt used too doing and that he was trying to make up for failing at in his past. Its perfectly understandable to want him to call first. there wasnt any really big rift here, just two friends growing up.
I agree. It would be a major shock to learn of the death of a life long friend. Plus factor in the media people getting in your face asking about it. It brought me to tears that the last words John ever spoke to Paul ended up as a line in Perkin's song. It was meant to be. It was John reaching out to Paul from beyond. His way to say hey, I'm okay and we will meet again.
Paul wasn't working on Tug Of War yet, it was his Cold Cuts album project he was working on at the time on December 8,1980, it was permanently shelved. After John's murder, Paul began work on theTug Of War album.
Actually , he was working on Tug Of War while also working on Cold Cuts, TOW was supposed to be the next Wings album, but became the next solo album after disbanding Wings in the wake of John’s passing. He also didn’t stop working on Cold Cuts, the final session for it was in 1987 and was supposed to come out but instead we got All The Best, which was supposed to include Waterspout
I'm not really one of those "Do you remember where you were" kind of people, with the exception of the death of John Lennon. I was a teenager at the time, and was extremely into everything Beatles. I was asleep (half asleep anyway) laying in bed with the radio playing, and it came on the radio, which caused me to immediately shoot awake. I can remember the entire day was spent in disbelief. I spent the next days, and weeks searching for every article/ story about the event I could find. His death just really hit me hard.
The words spoken between John/Paul, and then ending up in hands of their beloved icon, was what is known as a synchronicity (and a STRONG one!). Not a mistake, and you know you are on the right path in life, when they happen often! They are meaningful, they are real, and they are borderline paranormal, if not actually paranormal!
Synchronicity and Synchronicity II are The Police’s’ best songs, in my opinion. And yes, Paul was in complete shock and denial. I remember seeing that clip when it happened. I was 14, and I could easily see Paul was being cornered by cruel and vicious reporters who cared nothing for him or John.😢

Paul only wanted that early friendship that was so important to both of them. It was wrong for Lennon to turn him away, even if he was polite. Sean would have loved that his father stopped paying attention to him because Paul McCartney was visiting. The song Here Today is another to hear about the post-Beatles friendship among them

I remember watching that episode of SNL the night Lorne Michaels offered that money to the Beatles to perform on the show. What a piece of history that would have been for them to show up on set.
They were all under tremendous pressure most of their lives on top of dealing with the normal troubles of family and daily life there will never be again music like there music was and is
Wow... Crazy and somewhat sad history. I was a freshman in HS when Lennon was shot. I think I was the only kid in the classroom that understood the significance. A few years later I worked across the street from the Dakotas, walking past it's castle-like ominence, to sunbathe in Central Park. After college, a good friend of mine became Yoko Ono's art-assistant for quite a long while, and another was her music-manager. I met Yoko, briefly, at a gallery opening, and also saw McCartney at another. Random (useless) social archives from a native NYer... 🤫
@@amypagekaviani5661 I agree. It still bothers me from time to time that, as far as I know, John and Yoko never used the services of bodyguards. The Killer, apparently, knew that also.
I had a difficult time with johns death. I grew up with the Beatles. One evening as I lay in bed a message came into my heart. It was John. The first thing he was relating to me was that if I kept grieving I would be helping to bind him to the earth where he didn't belong anymore. He had to grow in death just as in life. I know now there are different levels in death as there are in life. Then I heard the music....... Death means " so long" it don't mean I'm gone. Death is * so long* but it don't mean I'm gone. Sounds exactly like something John would say. I felt the communication with him in my heart and soul. I learned something that nite. Thank you brother John. ❤❤❤❤😢❤❤❤❤❤
I always think of the music that they could have contributed to the great stuff that they made together! A sad musical break up indeed! But thats life ay.
McCartney wrote Silly Love Songs after a meeting with John at the Dakota. He offered John and Yoko tickets to his show at Madison Square Garden and John declined, saying it would just be a load of silly love songs.
As short at it is this is a good summation of the relationship between John and Paul after the Beatles split. They were never able to get back to the friendship they'd had. It was perhaps the biggest price they paid for the fame and success they'd had (it was even sadder between Paul and George). But there was always love there. Hard for either to express but they had it.
I shall never forget the 8th December 2012 when the police came to my door and told me that my ex-husband had passed away; I died internally straight away. I had people staying at my house in particular a young man from Galicia that was born on the 9th December the same year John Lennon died. I was so devastated with my grief and yet I saw a world of darkness that the young man would have been born into at that time and my grief for my husband was superceded by the the child that the young man would have been at the time borne into a world of grief and darkness amongst the environment of the peoples mentality of the world because of John Lennon's death.
I remember when the Beatles were younger, just starting out. They were amazing and every girl wanted to be theirs. Even though we all knew that was ridiculous and nothing more than childish imaginings. Still…we wondered. Mostly about Paul. Who wouldn’t be crazy about that dreamy smile and dark hair that we loved watching him shake when the lyrics of a song called for it? ***SIGH*** a girl can dream!!
What were the chances that two once in a lifetime talents like Lennon and McCartney would meet and be in the same band? To lose such a close friend in that way hurts.
From seeing the Beatles at our lunch time sessions at the Cavern as a kid in Liverpool, doing cover versions of American Artist thy loved, which they learnt from records brought back from New York, by the Liverpool Cunard Yanks, Liverpool lads who worked on the Cunard Liners sailing between Liverpool & New York. To become the biggest covered group in the World.
That was sad. Who would have ever thought that could be a situation. I'm sure we eventually have our regrets in our lives. We eventually have no choice but to move on.
“Paul gave a cold response to the media” Gosh, they just couldn’t leave the guy alone? Not everyone is comfortable with being vulnerable and open. Paul, especially seems like the type to always want to show a strong front.
I was only a 4 year old when the Beatles came to America the first time. But their songs were always playing in the house my two older sisters loved them.
Paul McCartney was a great friend to John Lennon.Paul McCartney a awesome singer and song writer.May John Lennon RIP 💐
A beautiful and sad story, so well told, so well told.
John and Paul, two amazingly talented men, but ultimately just 2 guys who were friends and liked to bake bread.
What a beautiful song!! I also believe it was channeled through John. They had a special bond which was unique in the music industry in the late 50’s. They changed the world of music that can never be compared or forgotten. Each one of them brought their own unique talents. Thank God we still have their music.
Yes indeed.
I lost track of several friends and when I tried to re-connect found out they had died.....haunts me
That is exactly right, "Cold attitude TOWARD THE MEDIA,". The media asks ridiculous, callus questions of people in shock. They deserve cold answers.
The media are nothing but vultures!
Yes!
Right. Paul wasn't cold to them, they were cold to Paul.
There is something to be said about not leaving things too late, to make it up with an old friend. As long as it doesn't tale you to the reason why you broke up your friendship -
I'm from Liverpool and my Dad took me to my first ever concert when I was 10 and it was Carl Perkins in 1979.
Paul sang this song when he was live in Pittsburgh. It brought tears to my eyes. RIP John and may your memory be blessing.
I'm a huge 'Beatles" fan ever since "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and I never heard this story. I was aware of the close friendship between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Their friendship seems a bitter sweet ending after the death of John Lennon. Very sad.

@@jrd690 Yoko is the reason why the Beatles broke up. 💔
@@lindahunter4545 True!

John's biting wit captured my 13 year old heart❤ George was so shy.... I always thought Paul was so full of himself and Ringo... I never really paid attention to him until late in life. He's a gem❤

You mean Billy's
Definitely and it was completely normal. I didn't believe it myself. Senseless act of horror by a sick individual who should never be paroled. Paul remains by favorite Beatle.
The news of John's death came as breaking news during the Tonight Show. The next evening a friend and i went to the Dakota. Outside of the entrance gate people started leaving flowers and things. We didn't have anything to leave. The only store open nearby was a fruit stand so I bought a green apple and put it on top of the pile. I still see it when they show old news clips of the people gathered outside the Dakota on that sad, sad day.
The green apple was a nice touch!

@AndersonSmith-kk8vr Well, funny you mentioned that because I am working on an art project about that very topic but it's going to be expressed in a very original way. I've never heard of this. Beautiful story.
The song was a snapshot of the sunset...between the communication of John and Paul...while both were still on this plane.
Paul and John were as close as two people can be. They started from nothing and changed the world together. In a normal lifespan, there was plenty of time to let things settle. That’s all they needed. MDC and a handgun took it all away.
So sad. That idiot was brainwashed I think to kill John Lennon. He is rotting in jail I hope.

Exactly, we don't know how their "rift" would have healed over the years. I mean, Lennon died only 10 years after the "divorce". They simply didn't have time to heal, but I think they would have.
So sad even it's been nearly 43 years after his death.😥😢😭
@@RobinGlover-bs1jp Haha
When Paul said that they were "too tired" to attend SNL, the truth was that John, Paul, Linda and Yoko had been drinking wine and smoking pot lol
How do you know? There has not been a hint of this from Paul.
@@chrishyde1216 - Was there any part of my comment that stated fact versus speculation?

This was an interesting thing I'd never heard about before. Thanks for posting.

That's our John to a tee . . .
The entire thing makes me sad. As I understand it, the only one left really left would be Paul. 😢
This is so untrue! There were meetings between them and many great moments were kept private.
To lose such a close friend in that way hurts.
that saturday night live appearance would have been so sick
Another thing that Yoko messed up

On January 8,1969, while working on material for the Beatles' "Let It Be" album, Paul McCartney sat at the piano and created a rough draft of music known simply as "Paul's Piano Piece". Over 50 years later, Michael Feldman, a classical and jazz pianist was asked to compare Paul's Diamond in the Rough to Samuel Barber's 1938 "Adagio for Strings". In conclusion, Michael was convinced that although "Paul's Piano Piece" shared minor similarities to classical works by Barber, Bach, and Beethoven. Paul's unfinished masterpiece was and continues to be a completely independent and original musical composition.
The next question was... what would a demo of this enchanting 1969 composition from the Lennon & McCartney era sound like today? Discovering secret lyrics hidden away by the most popular songwriting duo of the 20th century would be highly unlikely, so perhaps literary work embodying Lennon and McCartney's unbreakable bond would make a loving and heartfelt alternative.
The poem "Old Friend", beautifully written by literary artist David Sanz and confirmed to have been written in the same poetic style as John Lennon and inspired by his last words to Paul McCartney, was an interesting and heartwarming addition. As explained by the author, "The poem pays homage to the unbreakable bond between two teenagers from the small port city of Liverpool who, along with their mates, impacted the lives of millions and changed the world with their songs... forever."

In some of the infinite parallel universes these historical moments happened and John and George are still alive.
I recently read that the comment by Paul of "It's a drag" was an inside phrase that he and John used in the past, to describe whenever something bad happened. He wasn't trying to be disrespectful. I don't think that was in Paul's nature.
That's a beautiful story. Truly..
Paul McCartney was hurting so bad when he heard about John's death and is still hurting to this day and so am I and I will think about John Lennon and George Harrison every now and then forever Beatle fan forever and a Day
They shouda gone to that SNL show. Make history one more time. Eff Yoko.
I will always think of John Lennon from time to time and Think of George Harrison also from time to time because All thing's must Pass
I really loved Tug of War and of course. Here Today was on that album: And if I say
I really knew you well
What would your answer be?
If you were here today
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Here today
Well knowing you
You'd probably laugh
And say that we were worlds apart
If you were here today
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Here today
But as for me
I still remember how it was before
And I am holding back the tears no more
Ooh, ooh, ooh
I love you
Ooh ooh
What about the time we met?
Well, I suppose that you could say that we were playing hard to get
Didn't understand a thing
But we could always sing
What about the night we cried
Because there wasn't any reason left to keep it all inside?
Never understood a word
But you were always there with a smile
And if I say
I really loved you
And was glad you came along
Then you were here today
Ooh, ooh, ooh
For you were in my song
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Here today
