I think some of the things they changed were good. Aang ran away in the cartoon because he didn't want to be taken away from Gyatso... which didn't really make sense because running away still took him away from Gyatso. Also Aang only grieves for about 5 minutes in the cartoon before he goes back to being a happy laughing kid, chasing a lemur, riding giant fish, and showing off for other kids. That's fine for a kids show and I still love those things in the context of the cartoon, but in real life it would seem weird if he didn't dwell on that pain longer. That would weigh heavy on someone of any age, let a 12 year old, when you're old enough to understand things but not old enough to know how to deal with them.
BUT I do really wish they'd done something differently with the opening of the iceberg. As little as a more forceful backward pulling motion by Katara. Or better yet make Sokka mock her waterbending like "Well WHY don't you use your mAjiK wAtErBeNdInG to bring the boat back!" And she could go off on how he never takes her seriously and crack the iceberg open in her rage. It would have established her as a stronger, more confident character. I'm just hoping she's much more like that in Season 2 after building up her confidence this season.

What makes gyatso saying he would always be aang's friend more sad is that he was best friends with roku, now aang. He prolly meant that no matter what incarnation he is he would always be his friend that hit deep for real.

It makes more sense for gran gran to tell the story. Culturally its the Elders of the tribe that teach and tell the stories. Since she was speaking to a group of the water tribe. Katara would not be old enough to take up that position.

Really the only thing holding this series back from being great is that they didnt give it enough episodes to have good pacing and the dialogue is atrocious.
Hire better dialogue writers for season 2 and make it 10-12 episodes and it will be great.
The way it is now it is a bit jarring to watch though.
I agree with all of your critiques.

    • @DGSnowolf
      @DGSnowolf 4 місяці тому +4

Visually it's great. Everything looks very good from the setting to the costumes to the coreography and the casting of the actors fits very well in most cases, though Katara isn't really Katara right now personality wise, besides her I think Zuko is the weakest so far because the actor makes him look like he doesn't actually want to do what he's doing and looks pained instead of being an angry rebellious teenager who just hates everything. When Aang finds the remains of Gyatso, it looked like the actor was unable to cry. It looked like he tried but nothing came out. They could have helped with water. But that's all I have to criticize in that respect.
On the other hand, they have changed some things. I wanted them to change things that could be improved in retrospect in a non-weekly cartoon format. However, so far they've only changed things that don't add anything yet, but lose the meaning of the original.
We get to know Aang directly as a viewer and not along with Sokka and Katara as this mysterious boy who came out of the iceberg. We learn about the extinction of the Airbenders directly, first because we're shown it and then because Granny tells us and Aang, rather than him learning about it on the spot when he sees Gyatso's skeleton and telling Katara and Sokka on his own. This takes away a lot of the emotional moment.
In the cartoon, no one knew anything about the Fire Nation's plans, which is why Aang was so incredulous when he was told that they've been at war for 100 years because he has (had) friends in the Fire Nation. Here, Aang is told in the same breath that he has to fight the Fire Nation as he learns that he is the Avatar. Then we have this weird opening scene with the "stealing the Death Star plans" and it was actually all part of the plan and it doesn't add anything to the show other than stealing time that could have been used elsewhere, at least in this episode. Because if the creators' plan was to make the defeat of the airbenders more believable, they shot themselves in the foot when they changed it so that all the airbenders were in the same place at the same time (even though they only showed 6 of them in battle) instead of all four temples being attacked at the same time. And it didn't really look like the comet made the firebenders stronger. The firebending in other scenes looked exactly like it did during the attack on the airbenders. So it was kinda less believable even with the opening scene. It also doesn't make much sense. If the plan was to lure people away to protect the earth kingdom then there would be some other air bender survivors left in the earth kingdom.
Aang doesn't overhear the other monks planning to separate him from Gyatso because he's the Avatar, which, combined with his unwillingness to be the Avatar, causes him to flee and leave a message behind, but just happens to go on a little hiking trip with Appa and actually meant to come back. Despite this change, Sokka later calls him a coward for "running away" even though he didn't HERE. Funnily enough, Sokka never called him that in the cartoon even though he really did run away THERE.
The changes so far don't add anything new, but only take away the meaning of important moments in the cartoon.
But that's all ok so far, just regrettable. What I find terribly awkward is the dialog. It feels more like characters are just talking to move the events along or to tell the viewer something directly that they need to know. The characters don't really talk to each other as relatable people. Everything you know about the characters so far is told directly to you.
Aang doesn't want to be special
Sokka had to grow up early because of his position
Katara wants to practice waterbending because it's part of her culture that she wants to preserve.
These are directly stated to you almost word for word.
The grandmother was the worst. She comes in and says "This is an airbender, all the airbenders are dead, it's war with the fire nation and let me guess you're not just the last airbender but even the Avatar aren't you?" and then leaves because she's done everything she was needed to do. So lifeless just pressed into the lines.
3/5 for the first episode. Before the dialog started I thought to myself "even if the changes aren't good I will definitely watch the show because it's very nice to look at. But if the dialogue continues like this throughout the series, I'll have to see if I can finish watching it. Guess I'll see in the next few episodes.

12:34 "They gave them actual names" I'm not sure if any of the comments here have pointed this out, but naming Katara and Sokka's village as Wolf Cove was not original to this Netflix version! That was actually established as cannon in the TTRPG~ So that's not even something the show made up, just a very deep cut that I believe they had knowledge about from Avatar Studios even before the TTRPG was released.
One thing I super enjoyed about the show was that it pulled in aspects from the comics, Legend of Korra, the Kyoshi novels, and the TTRPG, showing they're not JUST looking at the show they're adapting. They're looking at the entire world Mike and Bryan crated and pulling it together with their own spin.

My take is that it was meant to be. The Avatar was always able to sense upcoming dangers (e.g. Roku warning Aang that Ozai will use the comet to finish the war & Aang giving clues to Korra about Tarlok). You're absolutely right that he could use the Avatar state to get out which was seen in The Storm episode when he saved the gang + the fisherman from drowning, but 100 years ago the Avatar State acted as a defense mechanism to stop him from getting killed with all the other airbenders and to come back when the time was right.
Katara even said in that episode "You're being too hard on yourself, even if you did run away. I think it was meant to be. If you had stayed, you would have been killed along with all the other airbenders. I know it was meant to be this way. The world needs you now. You give people hope."

Nah some of ya'll trippin and do want a copy and paste of the OG. It is an ADPATATION so some things will and can change. Expect that when there are different writers and directors who will have a different vision than the creators. Even the OP adaptation wasn't safe from this. Zoro wasn't like Zoro to me, Luffy was too serious but I still loved the sugar honey iced tea out of it being a pirate since high school 10+ years ago. I have my own critiques of the series for example they didn't have the part where Katara cracked open the ice ball and the following scenes, some characters aren't in character enough like Iroh and Sokka and Aang but that is IT. Oh and the casting for Mai and Ty Lee was...off. They're too plus-sized (yep I said it and my girlfriend is a bbw so don't @ me). All in all it was digestible, if these other people think they can do better well they can submit a resume to a studio and take THEIR chance. Condensing a 20 episode season into 8 episodes isn't easy, these productions are NOT easy and people talk down on it as if they have decades of film experience under their belt. It's akin to you going to 5 star formal dress only restaurant and telling the chef that his food isn't good enough when you have no culinary experience. Doesn't mean you can't have an opinion on something but there is a big difference between an opinion and talking defecation.

My biggest single criticism of this episode was that they didn’t have a Katara talk Aang down when he went into the avatar state at Gyatso’s body… I feel like that was a huge point to show the connection between the two of them (along with Aang’s obvious crush on Katara at first sight when he asked her to go penguin sledding, but that was easier to understand the reason for its removal and a bit less important anyway).
Overall this episode did a great job, but some of the character beats (or lack thereof, in this case) felt a bit off. Getting the character development just right is crucial! Still, a fairly good start!

    • @RunningTogether
      @RunningTogether 4 місяці тому +7

@@Lost.in.Missouri it’s absolutely not bad writing. Apparently you don’t believe in love at first sight or at no least “strong immediate connection”, but at least the latter definitely happens (I won’t try to argue the former as it’s not necessary). Aang is connected to Katara by his attraction to her, which makes him more receptive to what she says. She (at this point) is connected to him by the hope he has brought her and some larger sense of connection that has come from his positive attitude, so she already feels that they are like family if not yet romantic feelings. So she communicates to him that he has them as family still, and that idea that he is not alone is very powerful.
I don’t give that part of the original show a pass because I like the show… I like the original show partly because of those sorts of great character connection moments. These moments make the audience ALSO feel a connection to the characters after just one episode (or in this case, three short episodes roughly equal to the one live action one in length). It didn’t take me a full season to feel a strong connection to the characters or I probably wouldn’t have kept watching, and it doesn’t take that long for Aang to have that connection with Katara either.

Within a couple of weeks after leaving the Netflix project, they started Avatar Studios and that doesn’t normally just happen so they were most likely planning that for awhile and a more likely reason for their departure. One of the OG creators was also at the world premiere for the Netflix show taking photos with cast and crew….I highly doubt there’s any bad blood and given their heavy involvement with the film, I don’t think they mind creative interpretations of their work even if they turn out to be shit lol I think we often forget as fans the OG creators were involved with that

There were 20, 24-minute episodes in Book 1 of the animation for 480 minutes of runtime (including the Great Divide)... there are 8, 1-hour episodes of the Live action for 480 minutes of runtime. This episode covered chapters 1-3, or around 60 minutes of runtime... The pacing is bad because of choices made by the team. You have to think about the time that passes throughout the episodes too. In the original in the next episode they can be in a completely different area with a new objective, doing that chronologically without a massive cut (like an ending episode) is really hard to do unless there is like title screens or something. Having it all flow continuously is what made them make weird decisions involving the story. Which is why if it gets renewed, there should be more episodes.

    • @Nick-dk6kc
      @Nick-dk6kc 4 місяці тому +2

@7023 I think I understand what you're saying, but I disagree. Travel, story transitions, and flashbacks should not be jarring when the writers have every character's entire background, motivation and resolution already plotted, it is just execution.
It's not like it was an anthology, when the animated episodes ended our characters are traveling, or picking up exactly where they left off.
For every 60 minutes of Netflix show the Animated Title and outro would have played about 3 times giving the Netflix team almost 9 additional minutes to work with in order to transition from area to area and bridge story gaps. This doesnt include the entire episodes worth of content that were cut.

Cause think about it! When the actor who plays Aang was casted, he was 11/12 in real life; Katara's actress was 14.
But now (2024), Aangs actor is 14 and Katara's is 16, so i think when they start shooting season 2, they'll be at a more appropriate mid-teen age to act out romantic scenes effectively.
Even in interviews I was GAGGED cause Aang's actor Gordon Cormier's voice is already breaking and he's almost her height now😵 It is also realistic cause boys are naturally smaller than girls *up until puberty* and then have a massive growth spurt.
Cause they CANNOT butcher KATAANG PLS😂🙏 they gotta be older enough to act out them scenes in a non-cheesey/cringe way. A cartoon can pull it off and yes, we usually do have first crushes/kisses at 12-15 years of age. BUT it will just look weird he looks like such a small cute lil baby😭 I feel like he's my child😭

That was due to the fact they wouldn't give them more than 8 episodes. This live action was doomed from the beginning.
If they didn't want a relationship portrayed by a 16 year old actress and a 13 year old one, they definitely will not ever have one portrayed by an 18 year old one and a 15 year old one. That won't be an issue, though, the show will never get past season 2(if it even gets there) as the actors will age way too quickly. In season 3 of the actual Avatar, they are all still the same age or one year old at most.
But with streaming shows taking so much to shoot and be released, the kids will be in their 20s and even Aang's actor will be 17 by season 2. Again, the show was doomed from the start.

The marketing and interviews of the cast really shows these guys their chemistry more imo, if y'all are not sold, watch the promotion videos they did for this show. Cuz these videos really show the potential of them doing book 2 right. The definitely got the cast right.
    Edit: warning small spoiler kinda,
I think they will let Katara do the intro if s2 gets made.

Thats the problem tho. The cast have GREAT chemistry in real life, yet NONE of that is in the show. Respectfully their relationship outside the show mean jack shit. What is in the show matters

But I do agree with you, hopefully they can take the criticism and make Book 2 better

I personally liked the other episodes better than episode 1 in my opinion. DONT worry guys it gets better! And if you think they won’t introduce some things, dw they’re probably remixing it or saving it for another episode!
And Yeah sure… Gran gran way better practically 100 yrs old as well and probably remembers the Comit festival but that was lacklustre asf😹 I agree!

they have to make changes from the cartoon, is only 8 episodes trying to condense 24 episodes, like the One Piece show, they have to make creative choices. I like it, feel like a fresh show but keeping the base very good 👍
    love you girls ❤

Book 1 was 20 episodes. It had pretty much the exact same runtime as this show. They didn't have to condense anything. It's all down to the things they chose to change.

My favorite character in this series are aang, sokka, zuko, suki

The opening scene was so good it made the rest of the episode disapointing. So much inconsistencies, questionable VFX, and poor dialog. Zuko really carries this show and Sokka stole all the good characteristics from Aang and Katara that so much doesnt even feel earned or logical.

Disclaimer: start carrying tissues from episodes 4 onwards🧻😭
It starts to get WAY better from 3 onwards in my opinion! Enjoy the wild ride of this adaptation
And I think it’s good that the show manages to surprise BOTH newcomers and fans. Same plot, but awesome additions. Don’t worry too much if they do something that me not identical to the cartoon❤️
