    I wanted to give credit to that Earth Bender Soldier in that Iroh scene. He acted the hell out of that 1 scene he was in. It really set up the weight behind Iroh's decision after Lu Ten died. I don't think in the anime they stressed enough that at one point Iroh was not a good person, which is why it was such a pivotal moment in his story. But then leaves on the vine, yeah nah 😭

    That funeral scene is easily one of the best additions in this show and the fact they played Leaves from the vine ... Like they didn't have to but they still did ! That scene in particular really shows to me that the show was made with really good heart and good intentions

    I really Zuko and Iroh how they are portrayed in this version. The scene with Zuko comforting his Uncle about his son's death, just gave me the fuzzies, both actors are really embodying the characters. Shout out to Miss Morgan for noticing and praising the fight choreography, it is very well done.

      Exactly! Bec if they totally did then better for those perfectionist "fans" just watch the animation. No live adaptation will ever be perfect bec. animations are supposed to be cartoony and it's hard to convert them all into reality so they need to make a lot of adjustments and Netflix did an amazing job with it

    I love the respect that they gave "leaves from the vine". When the original voice for Iroh died, it was one of his last recordings, and when the new voice started he said he didn't want to re-record that scene as respect, or would ever sing it. So it's left as something that only Mako has sung.

    To me, they treated Katara the way they did, because they didn't want to give her actual flaws like jealousy or being overly bossy,, but instead her "flaws" are that she lets other people hold her back from being the amazing master bender that she is .. Which is lame AF in my opinion.

    I loved the fact that they finally addressed Iroh history in a real way. I’ll be honest, even in that scene I felt he was kinda cold and unapologetic until the guy mentioned that he didn’t know loss. I just love the realistic views on war and oppression. Even Bumi realistic take on Aang being a 100 years old but hasn’t lived a 100 years of war, colonialism and oppression. Sure it’s not Aang’s fault but the world has been hell since he’s been gone.

    I don’t always share the same views as you all but I agree here that the characterizations feel off on a lot of the main and supporting cast sometimes. Past Avatars being aggressive and seemingly blaming Aang feels like a strange choice but I suppose it was done to encourage him to seek them out less I guess? And the whole Bumi conclusion did feel wholly underdeveloped to me as he went from telling Aang to drop a boulder on his head to let’s goof off in the stone carts before you go on your mission to save the world? Katarra. Yeah, well, here’s to the next episode I guess.

  • @StillOnTrack
    @StillOnTrack 6 місяців тому

    I didn't really love the change from romantic love to sibling love in this episode. I don't hate it completely though, and I actually think the actors look too far apart in age for a budding romance to be believable, but even so they could have just left Secret Tunnel for season 2 like it was originally.
    I did like Bumi though. I thought his bitterness was understandable from a realistic perspective. And I though it the moment when Aang finally proves him wrong and gets through to him so much more impactful. I don't think he ever really intended their match to be "to the death" though. At least in my own head, I like to think he was only trying to teach Aang a lesson and would have either earthbent himself into the ground, or just cracked the stone over his head to survive if Aang had given in.
    I LOVE all the Zuko and Iroh stuff though. So beautiful!

  • @agungsyawal101
    @agungsyawal101 6 місяців тому +2

    I didn't like some scenes in this episode. Why isn't there a kiss between Aang and Katara in the tunnels scene? even though it was Katara and Aang's first romantic moment. And also I didn't like it when Aang found out BUMI's name earlier. If Aang knew the name BUMI at the end, it would be really cool. but for the story from Uncle Iroh, and Zuko the best story.

      > just like One Piece and you liked it and enjoyed it, so now you know how the purist fans of One Piece didn’t liked that much.
      Nah, idk about that. As someone who's a bigger fan of One Piece than Avatar (and is such a "purist" that I only stick to the manga), I don't think this is accurate. Many fans, including myself, left the OPLA thinking it was different but pretty good and a fun time. Now, there's a lot to discuss with both these live action shows but overall, I'll say this.
      The OPLA kept about the same tone as the original and kept the characters mostly accurate. They didn't exposit excessively or change Luffy's goals.
      The Avatar LA changed the tone to being more serious than it should be and, while it made some great additions (like in this episode and in ep 6), it really dumbed down the dialogue with too much exposition. They also did Katara more dirty than OPLA did to Usopp.

    ngl i was very very skeptical (of most live actions adaptations) but this one was actually good. like it had its werid and bad moments....but they had some really good moments. The fact of how Bumi was more mentally scarred and tired from war and it shows. Then Iroh's past comes to haunt him in that earthbender's memories of his brother. Then the last scene where Iroh joins Zuko on the ship.

  • @blazedj
    @blazedj 6 місяців тому +4

    First thing, if they ever have Iroh actually sing the song, I won’t be able to hold back these tears.
    Second, Bumi was less dramatic about it in the cartoon, but he definitely took it personally that Aang disappeared for a century. Other than the lack of bizarreness and trying to crack jokes, his character seems spot on for me. It’s a very common trait for a lot of the Earth based characters in the show to be more straight forward. Toph would joke, but she wouldn’t coddle Aang, and Kiyoshi, in the two or three times Aang actually called upon her, she was a straight shooter who told it like it was. There’s no doubt that she would tell Aang about how she thought he’d messed up.
    Third, as far as romance in this show, I’d say that they’re holding off on it because the actors are still so young. Other than that, I always found it a little weird and out of place when, in the cartoon, we could tell that Aang liked Katara, but in the episode where they meet Jet, he doesn’t show any signs of jealousy about it, and he’d get jealous and worrisome so easily. This could also be a reason why, in this show, Aang isn’t focusing on any romantic feelings he might have for Katara just yet. Besides, the actual turn for their relationship comes during the fortune teller episode. Before than, Katara hadn’t considered anything happening between them romantically. Madam Woo tells her that she’ll marry a powerful bender, and Sokka points out how powerful Aang is. Then, things begin to move forward for them.

      ngl i kinda like the fact that Bumi wasnt just all wise and fun loving like the OG. 100 years of battle and war has scarred him. While he still has that playful part, much of it was almost an act to cover up how deeply traumatized and tired he was. Aang really needed someone to show him that shit aint about games. Yes, him being gone wasnt his fault. But its also unreasonable of aang to show up 100 years later and be like "everyone stand up and think about hope cuz i am here".

    Why did they make everyone angry at Aang vor getting frozen for 100 years like it's his fault? They got Bumis general personality well, but then changed him for no reason just to add tension, cause I guess they didn't have the time for his challenges and to reveal who he is after their fight only. Aang fighting Bumi in this feels dumb. And why did they add Secret Tunnels and other season 2 stuff to season 1 like this? Without it serving the purpose it had? No wonder everything is rushed despite having enough time. They make all the wrong choices for some reason. So much of the stuff they change loses all the purpose it had making it just a random arrangement of memes. Katara isn't Katara. It's somehow always the shows screaming "no sexism" and the like the loudest that then end up making terrible female characters... Sokka lost parts of being Sokka, so did Aang. Zuko you seem to like but he seemed like one of the weaker portrayals to me cause he seems more pained by what he is doing than he is angry. This ep was more on the level of the first ep again sadly. The first ep was a constant meh, this had a lot of lows and a few highs.
    The funeral was good. Paying respect to leaves from the vine, having Ozai and Iroh actually interact (they somehow never did in the original). Good change, could've been executed better dialogue wise, but it's ok.
    And with all the stuff they took from Season 2 and put it into Season 1, to be a little optimistic, maybe they'll actually adapt that one well. It is the best and most story driven book of the 3, they took out a lot of the more unrelated adventures to the greater storyline out.

      I think thts just what theyre tryna set up for this adaptation, tht despite what anyone says to Aang, he will continue to walk his own path into becoming his own version of the Avatar, regardless of the warnings he's received frm his previous reincarnations. But it still doesnt mean ppl cant be bitter about him being gone for a 100 years. Its just like real life where we humans would get angry at our leaders for not showing up after just months of neglecting the ppl they serve. So i think its pretty realistic for someone like Bumi to feel the way he feels. He's been living in those harsh conditions longer than most. I do have to agree with the secret tunnels part, it just felt out of place in this episode.

      With Bumi, I think it makes complete sense given the tone the live-action creators have gone with for the adaptation. Unlike the animated series, they are explicitly showing and spending more focus on the horrors of the war. So, IMO it would make Bumi, as someone who's spent the last 100 years fighting the war and making tough calls, genuinely sociopathic if he remained unfazed and happy-go-lucky like he was in the original series, as opposed to the tired, jaded, and bitter version they went with.

    🎶Two Lovers, forbidden from one another. A war divides their people, and the mountain divides them apart. Built a path to be together🎶, yeah I forgot the next couple of lines but then it goes, 🎶SECRET TUNNEL, SECRET TUNNEL! THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN! SECRET, SECRET, SECRET, SECRET TUNNEL, yeah!🎶
    This was also a wonderful homage to Mako who was the original voice actor of Iroh. He recorded the lines while he was in the hospital bed and cried realizing he was going to die very soon. 😭

    Who the hell wrote this they had me cry at least 3 times cause of all the Iroh & Zuko stuff ugh I’m loving this darker adaptation tho I’d love to see a sequel to Legend of Korra too at some point & I haven’t read the Kyoshi books so I wanna know more about her but the giving Aang a hard time about it I’m fine with especially Kyoshi cause she’s a hard ass even Kyoshi said that he had to kill the fire lord and she killed her last enemy we only ever saw Kyoshi twice in the cartoon

    Great observations, I largely agree with your take on positive she negative changes.
    Probably my biggest dislike of a change is what they did to Bumi’s character here, because they did take away his wisdom completely… Aang taught him something instead of him teaching Aang anything. Also they made him cynical and depressed (and mean, though that may have just come from his own pain here), which is a complete change of his entire character. It may be arguably add to the “realistic” effect of dealing with good situation for so long, but I think it’s really just making a different character completely. I don’t mind changed to the events, but changes to the characters’ fundamental nature are much more questionable.
    By the way, the Earth nation didn’t loosen Iroh’s chains in the original… they went to TIGHTEN them (at his request, because he was tricking them and knew they would never loosen them, so he was able to burn them that way). I do miss that event because it showed how clever Iroh can be, but it’s just one small moment and not a big deal here… The earth soldier’s story about his brother’s death worked well for different reasons.
    I do really like the flashback scene of Zuko comforting Iroh though, and I think some other changes and additions were smart as well.
    Looking forward to the rest of your reactions.

    Gran Gran is played by Casey Camp-Horinek, a 75-year-old Native woman of the Ponca Nation of Oklahoma. Those are her real wrinkles. He hair is not grey yet though so maybe that's what looked off to you. Sadly though, most of the criticism I've heard aimed at her has to do with the way she speaks, which is actually her native cadence and manner of speaking as a native woman, which I find really sad because it tells me that most people in the U.S. know so little about the native people whose land we all inhabit today.

    I don’t think Bumi or Kyoshi actually blame aang for him being frozen for 100 years. I think they just said that to motivate him to do what he has to do to stop this war. Air bender Nomads are pacifists so he needs tough love to become the Avatar that the world needs.

    Yea the changes between Katara and Sokka's dynamic is gonna be hard to adjust. But I mean realistically Sokka had just as much shit to deal with as Katara does. It just kinda makes sense with all the changes theyve made with the show. If we're gonna keep comparing em to the original, than yeah, its totally different characters. But in the context of the adaptation itself and wht theyve been showing us, then theyve been nothing but consistent. Just gonna be difficult for hardcore fans to accept tht this adaptation is trying to stand on its own and not be another copy of the original.

  • @nicholasstockbridge5702

    They are not blaming Aang they are blaming the Avatar. They did not know it was Aang. History is written by the victors. The fire nation could of assumed they killed the Avatar. But they would use it as propaganda to tell others the Avatar ran away, This 1. destroys peoples hope. 2. They think the avatar is an air nomad that went into hidding and abandoned everyone. So after several years they would start wondering where is the avatar. And every year that passed hope faded and faded. It would also prevent the water tribe from testing the kids as to who the next avatar could be. The fire nation didnt start outright killing water benders till later, about the time the Air nomad would have died from old age. Its not out of character when you look at it with the realities of war.
    I will say that they dont need a Katara and Aang relationship yet. he is 12. they can still build that relationship. They are allowing room for the characters to grow.

    I know it's unfair that the characters blamed Ang for leaving but I can't fault them for that either. They didn't know.. nobody knew that when the avatar left he was just supposed to get some air and to think things through.. nobody knew he was stuck in an iceberg.. all they knew was that during the 100 years that the avatar was gone, people were dying and suffering, sure they could have had hope for a few years waiting for the avatar to come but.. 100 years? It's understandable that people will be bitter... the all powerful hero that was supposed to keep the peace between nations vanished leaving others to suffer and lose loved ones... I am not saying Angg is to blame (if he didnt leave that night he would have died with the other airbenders).. I am just saying I understand their grief and bitterness about being left without anyone to save them..
    I also understand Bumi here.. he's a king.. people's live are in his hands like he said "where should the food scraps go? The orphanage or the soldiers" .. making decisions that you thought was the best and still others would hate you for it because they are left with none.. and making heavy decisions like that for almost 100 years? It'll drive you insane..

    I enjoyed this bumi. Makes sense a kid growing up fighting a war non-stop for 100 years. You'd obviously change. Take that earth bender, went from him/his brother saving/giving away food to him throwing away a good apple. And that's just from him losing a brother bumis managing a kingdom.
    To talk about your point i think they're tryna hammer in that the avatar is a warrior 1st, kyoshi said merciless warrior, zuko mentioned the greatest warrior. That's why they put the dialogue you ran" bc assumably you are the avatar you die fighting. (Ex. Wan died on the battlefield and he was the 1st avatar) (Think they're gonna set up/sprinkled throughout the series so everyone expects a warrior so fighting/killing is the norm so aang can show them a new way)
