Yeah, this review is pretty late. As some of you may know, I'm suffering from a mystery illness that limits what food my stomach can tolerate and drains my energy. The good news is that my brother has been seeing a doctor for it for 6 months and he's narrowed it down to either being a fungus or parasite. If it's the fungus, the medication is pretty cheap and you only have to take it for 2 weeks. If it's a parasite, it will be a bit more expensive but still not too bad. The bad news is in both cases I will likely have even less energy to make videos so I'm probably only going to release one more video this month. And in the case of the stomach fungus, usually only immuno-compromised people get it which would be really bad for obvious reasons. Worst case scenario, it's neither and I'm stuck with this mystery disease for a while. It really saps my motivation for making videos so I'm probably only going to make positive videos until I feel better. I know some of you have been waiting for me to cover good games for a while so I guess that's some good news.
Hope you get it sorted. I remember you saying your brother had to basically do the carnivore diet because of this illness. Hopefully that can provide you some relief until you get it cured.
Because he loves videogames and has played tons of them for a long time. Also he is smart and has very high standards, unlike most reviewers who sound like easily impressed teens.
You mean they be as honest as possible without being fake and just trying to give em opinion that thinks many gamers think like. If I wasn't so anti social I would of made a channel similar to this one. The fact he mentioned DSP is funny fully knowing DSP stinks at games and blames everyone but himself
13:50 yes you can dodge the grabs. The problem is that you are moving backwards at the same time. 99% of the time where they try and grab me, i duck and stop moving once they are about to grab me and it works perfectly fine.
thats correct, same with krauser, you can dodge his arm grab, also when he rushes at you, you can just do quick 180 turn and run away from it lol people just panic and start shooting at him thinkin they are going to stop him
Glad someone pointed this out! I was thinking the same when he mentioned you couldn’t. I had a prompt for crouching on the grabs early on and it saved my ass the rest of the way.
I'm just so sick of remakes/remasters at this point that even when they are good I find it hard to care. The majority of big releases this year so far have been remakes/remasters, it's just boring to me.
I fully agree, the only remakes I somewhat want or care about, are ps1 and PS2 games, mostly because it's nice to emulation, but I want easier and more modern ways to play them. And if handled correctly, modding support etc
@@TheRealOAFs Yeah I definitely agree that an older game deserves a remake/remaster more. At the same time I'd rather devs just release high-quality ports to modern platforms rather than taking he time away from new games to remaster or remake them.
@@TheRealOAFs Man, I want Nomad Soul and Blue Stinger remade so bad. I'm still playing them to this day, I don't even want better graphics, just updated control schemes. On that note, if you're into this kind of games (6 degrees of liberty shooters
I'm really hoping everything doesn't end up like, the big guys end up dissuaded from making new IPs because all their new stuff is ideologically charged crap, so instead of turning down the schizo propaganda they play it safe and only every rehash established properties. Of course, until they end up flopping the remakes as well, Disney style. Then who knows what bull they'll try to do to save themselves.
I have to strongly agree with you on the controls of this game. Leon is not responsive enough and in combination with the ultra tight camera, you will take sooo many cheap hits. Still really like the game
You can fix that changing settings plenty of vids on here showing best controller settings for Re4 remake. I changed to my liking and it made a huge difference.
@James Sunderland Nah it's pretty tedious for no real reason I'll stick with playing the original the graphics improvements don't justify the hit in game mechanics to me
@@KingcarterJ1002 I mean if you like parrying with the knife play krauser and feel like knife God. Honestly I'm gonna bet they patch his gameplay he's so op.
The RE4 remake isn't bad - far from it, I'd say -, but the most remarkable thing about it is its relation to the original - which is sort of the problem. I honestly don't think the remake will have the staying power the original had, which is unfortunate when you consider the amount of work that went into this game. It lacks the memorable character of the original (due to a pursuit of more "realism") and it also fails to revolutionize anything like the original - what with this being the third iteration of a formal which was already well tried and tested. I can't see interest in this game making it beyond this year. Sure, I can see people bringing it up here and there, but always in a middling "yeah, that was pretty cool" kind of tone.
I agree, can't be "revolutionary" when you're pretty much copying mechanics from other AAA games. Man I miss the times when RE set trends, not followed them. Even RE7 and RE2 2019 kicked off a survival horror revival in the indie/AA market. What's RE4 2023 supposed to do when they completely changed its core design?
@@Gruntvc Remakes of modern (modern enough, anyways) games occupy a pretty unfortunate space. The wider industry (unfortunately) hasn't deviated all that far from a decade ago. What's more, in the facets that do different, haphazardly integrating them into a remake of a more modern game can lead to undermining the original intent of that work. The RE4 remake is a really good example of this. They took a more methodical game and modified it's mechanics to speed everything up simply because faster shooters are more commonplace now. It might have been possible to retain that more methodical and intentional design of the original, but I believe the developers of the remake either didn't know how or lacked the confidence to commit to it. I keep finding myself asking the same question - why do these remakes exist? Of course, the answer is money - but on the "higher" level of truly loving and respecting this medium, these remakes really can't justify their own existence. I would honestly rather see all the resources and efforts put into these games dumped into new IPs that might become classics in their own right. We live in a very risk averse world, I'm afraid.
what's crazy is, its the exact same leon from re2 remake lmao which was a successful character. so idk how that leon is still being compared to re4 original leon who was literally more kin to dmc dante than his original re2 version (red hair).
Great video, part of the problem with the movement are ‘deadzones’ where input for movement isn’t registered until your analog stick reaches a certain point it’s really aggravating. Also you can actually dodge grabs by crouching, they will basically hug the air above you and you can punish them afterwards
i hate when devs put in huge deadzones, it's so annoying. thankfully on PC you can use a program like ReWASD (or Steam Input) to create "anti-deadzones" which help remove the ones the devs put in.
Bosses just don't shut up. Mendez in the original was creepy because of his inhuman grunts. Same with OG Krauser, simple "heh" while shoving knife through Leon's chest was so much better than endless banter.
That's quite interesting cause that makes them more mysterious and dangerous... Whereas here, krauser was acting like any generic hero's friend turned bad guy
@valder Not quotes. Organic dialogue that adds to the encounter and for the player to be wary of Krauser because your character clearly acknowledged him as a threat. Anything is better than that BS QTE knife fight and final fight where you can just knife stun lock him to victory. These are facts, not opinions. Now Krauser actually got some depth than just looking like an Ivan Drago rip off from Rocky. Also Mendez boss are both fine for both games. Mendez climbing and swinging around a burning building is also formidable and tense

I agree about the writing. RE4 wasn't a masterpiece by any means in the writing department, but I feel like the dialogue between characters just flowed better. The biggest example is Leon's first meeting with Luis. Another thing I have noticed, not just in the RE4 Remake, but in games in general is how bad voice acting has gotten in the past couple of years. I have no idea what kind of people they're hiring, but they clearly have never done voice acting and it shows. It's a shame as well, since OG RE4 had great voice acting. At least the game as a whole is good. Was pretty worried after RE3R so it's good to be proven wrong for once.
I imagine the Voice Acting community is a toxic swampland of diversity hires, box ticking and nepotism at this point, and it certainly wasn't looking healthy a few years ago. It's like the Hollywood atmosphere, but much smaller and compacted.
There’s a few reasons. One, there was a voice actor strike, which meant union VA’s couldn’t work. Now it was some years ago, but games take years to make and depending on their role they might be grandfathered in for future roles rather than be replaced. Another is as he mentioned, there’s a bit of a trend going on to only hire VA’s of the same race as the character. It’s still niche in practice, but it does happen in spots, notably with Capcom. They’re doing it with the new Street Fighter (although they might’ve dropped certain VA’s because they don’t like their views or some garbage). And I’d say a third reason is the Hollywood factor. They’ll get celebrities to voice characters rather than seasoned VA’s. I guess they think it’ll get them more attention/sales by doing it, but in reality it likely just costs them a ton of money for no return, and in some cases (for the artistic aspect) it’s a detriment because they suck compared to professional voice actors. Yet another reason why this “games are expensive to make!” spiel is nonsense. They go out of their way to make games ore expensive than find alternatives to lower production costs, but don’t. It’s on them. Those are some reasons why voice acting isn’t as good, most notably in AAA games.
@@mrshmuga9 Capcom dropped the VA for Ken, who also voices Dante from the DMC series, for his views regarding… a certain untested medicine created for a recent viral emergency we all had to deal with. Which is one of the other plagues on the VA community that has them similar to Hollywood: if you don’t lean the exact same way as everybody else, they will tear you to pieces to feed on the scraps. So you end up with a majority of them acting the same way. Frankly, you end up with backstabbing prima donnas who put more stock into pretty much everything, with the ability to actually voice act sitting far in the back.
Mercenaries mode released today and it demonstrates everything wrong with professional/hardcore. Enemies stagger in one hit, grenades knock enemies over, mercenaries is fastpaced fun while still delivering a challenge, the higher difficulties just have you spamming a water gun and constantly running out of ammo. Also Synth, would you consider doing a short re2 remake review about why you like it so much? I'm sure a lot of your fans would like to hear your take
It's crazy just how different the balancing in Mercenaries feels compared to the main game, and for the better. While there are still flaws that pursist into Mercenaries, the changes make the combat click in a way that the main game never approached. Feels more like the original. Mercenaries is easily the best part of REmake 4, to the point that it's going to be my main reason for touching the game again.
@@platinumconquest2365 If you're playing on PC, there is a mod that changes the balance so that it's more like the original. 1 shot=stun, and so on. The vanilla version plays like this on Standard, but the enemies are braindead
@@Fedor_Kisliakov I've already been using those mods for a while. Makes the whole thing much more enjoyable. That being said, when I played the demo (which is at standard) I still remember some RNG stagger happening. Don't know if it's like that in the final game (first playthrough was on Hardcore) but I thought I was safe to assume it was.
@@Fedor_Kisliakov Fair enough. That's a lot better, though it being there at all still bothers me. That being said, REmake 4's RNG stagger is at least better than RE8. The RNG stagger (and bloated health pools) was ridiculous on anything higher than Standard.
for real, i can understand like hey drop a few bucks for exclusive upgrade tickets but alot of the costumes and bonuses are just STUPID. Like if you want unlimited ammo for the game? Wear a pair of retarded looking cat ears
As much as I love this game, I agree almost 100% with this review. Enemies being bullet sponges and the stunning working differently are the only complaints I have with it.
Finally a balanced review of the remake. I thought the remake was a lot of fun; but I agree, the remake lacks the charm and fun weirdness that the original had. If they had actually kept ALL original content (U-3, lava room, laser room, ALL the one-liners, and changed Ada's voice), I think this would have been a near-perfect remake. Oh well.
I never played the og re games, but I was playing through re4r and reading about the housekeeper that Salazar turned into U3. A tragic figure that got cut out basically, only informed on in texts you pick up throughout the game.
Nah I’m glad they continued in the style of the other remakes because I love when people complain when bad content is cut. Almost feels like a natural progression from RE3 now instead of a game for people who hate resident evil.
Re4 remake has so much replayability. Played the game 5 times back to back. Even if you only play the game once and miss out on content i'd still pay more than 60 bucks to play this game.
I’m curious to see his video on it. As personally, I almost never replay games, so I wonder if his points will somehow have an affect on how I experience it. Although I will do most of the side content on my “first” playthrough when playing a game.
You're spot on with how slow it is to turn and run, it was brutally painful, which i was not expecting. i had to crank sensitivity up just to make it halfway responsive and tolerable. aside from that i beat it 8 times and loved it.
I can see that capcom is putting player control at a detriment with input lag or slow movement for the sake of being cinematic. We should start a movement telling devs to make games as games, and to cut back on the cinematic shit. However, you gotta stop playing games on the hardest difficulty synth, you're stressing yourself out lmao. Honestly this remake makes me wanna play both this & the original, I have yet to play either of them. And thanks for the review, I look forward to all of your videos.
It makes no sense for there to be input lag. Many action games need this removed because it makes no sense. From realistic standpoint, yes, it takes us humans till we move part of our body some time, but in game its stupid as it only gets you killed.
It's funny when you realize that Ethan Winters, a guy who started off as an untrained civilian then becomes a slightly trained civilian, has better shot-grouping/focus with his reticle than a guy who starts off as a rookie cop then becomes a highly trained government agent. I'm dead serious, if you played RE7 or Village, in both games Ethan's aim is much tighter and dead-on accurate than Leon's.
Ethan aint civillian, he has a training, it was said in game. But rest I agree. Leon was under top military program and in RE2 he literally has almost no sway with handgun, yet 6 years later he shoots pistol like he has stroke.
@@ExtremeMan10 Did you read my comment right? Ethan had no training in RE7. Like, none whatsoever. He did receive training in between RE7 and Village under Chris, but during RE7 he literally had no prior experience, and yet his aim was much better than Leon's.
@@ExtremeMan10 Knowing how to use a gun does not equal being good at using it (or being trained to use it, for that matter). Your own experience with attempting something does not define the experiences of other people attempting the same thing. And no, Ethan did not have any arms training prior to RE7. I'm not sure what blunt you're smoking here to come to that conclusion.
@@superplayerex2431 Oh yes, so when I know how to assemble, reload and clean a pistol I dont know how to aim it. Lmao I WANT the blunt you are smoking scrub.
I completed the original a day before the remake released, then completed the remake in one 16 hour sitting on hardcore on day one. As much as I love both the games, I believe the original has this beat. I prefer the originals vibe and I'll never forgive them for what they did to the red 9 in the remake I can't count how many times I finished the original. @@danielgregori7019 you're a modern nerd with biased lens who worships bankrupt creativity. The original will always be superior and had a bigger impact than this dark wannabe horror turd qith cut content lmao.
Remake fans have consistently been extremely aggressive whenever people openly criticise them. I noticed it first with FF7 remake fans. It's as if it's a political topic.
I am trying to become a game developer and don't worry i hear what you are saying. You and Mayo are my best influences and critiques for my future games. If i were to make anything similar to a Resident Evil game, i would make it more like Metal Gear Solid. Tons of mechanics and options to play around with action or stealth and huge emphasis on smart enemy A.I. to make the player actually scared when dealing with them, since it would be a horror game and all. If only i had the budget Konami or Capcom has.
If you're making a survival horror game and want the player to be truly, and I mean TRULY scared, then add detrimental/irreversible consequences to dying. Make the player afraid of dying first and foremost, because if they have no reason to fear dying, then they have no reason to fear the things that can kill them.
@@TheCyclicGamer You are absolutely right. I don't even like horror games, because i never get scared of them. The one thing that increases my tension/anxitey, is losing a lot of progress. The problem with losing progress is, most of the time, it's just going to bum out the player by making them repeat the same stuff they previously did. To fix that, you add a very complex A.I. that gives some ''character'' to the enemies. Like in Meta Gear Solid, there are enemies who are weak, scared and goofy and immediately give in to your threats and then, there are brave heroic ones who will risk their life to take you down. Make the enemies respawn with random character and have many different behaviours instead of a simple pattern and that's how you add tons of replayability to the game. Of course the game will be short though, 5-20 hours depending on the budget.
@@SolonGaming For me, whenever I play a new horror game, the second I die and realize that death doesn't affect me much, I stop being scared of the game as a whole. Losing progress can bum the player out, but depending on the game that you're making that doesn't have to be the case, you could have a limited live system, lose money and/or resources, etc.
Regarding input lag: THANK YOU SO MUCH for pointing that out. I was really freakin' furious how my timing was perfect, but the game just wouldn't allow me to parry an attack because of some stupid control error. Current at my sec. playthrough, but I'm not sure yet whether the new patch (without any notes, in typical Crapcom-fashion lol) fixed that.
@@greatestnitemare6626 First game I've called a masterpiece in years. I think it's better than the original, and the original is one of my favorite games of all time (probably top ten). It's not just hype.
I agree with you so much on these remakes being devoid of music it makes everything feel so soulless and empty just like the Mulan movie remake that movie had none of the songs and that was 50% of the most beautiful and memorable content.
I'm with you on this one. I rather go and play the original again and if I ever get this one it would be on a deep discount, no way I'm paying full price for it.
Not all of us. But still sucks none of this was available on launch as every port of RE4 since PS2 has had them. And get rekt if you got a physical copy as even Mercenaries isn't on the disc. PS2 had all of these on one DVD disc. Maybe they'll do a complete version once the other paid dlc drops. But even then, Capcom coupd just cheap out and include a dlc voucher with the blu ray disc. They did this with RE Village Gold Edition lol.
@Zoomer Stasi what does modern game have to do with anything lol the base game has about 20 + hours of content on first run alone. we all still got challenges we haven't completed and its only been what, 2 weeks barely. mercenaries dropped literally today, and everybody should be walking around with a infinite hand cannon because of it. wait your dang turn and go touch grass until they're ready to serve you dlc on a platter boy.
he never said hard is simply good, he meant it is good for a game to be difficult enough to make you use all the different mechanics rather than just baby you like a lot of AAA titles and make the player care nothing about the mechanics the game has to offer one example is devil may cry 5, it has more than 100 moves and a cool ass style meter but most players don't use 90% of the mechanics because you can just stinger your way through the game, as for re4 remake, I don't think this game is difficult at all, specifically in normal, I'd argue it could even use more difficulty to have a better horror impact.
@@ary8956 Same with Nioh, the game offers thousands of different playstyles and builds but you can literally cheese through the game with Sloth talismans, katana deflects and spear power boosts.
challenging = good bc then its not boring, hard bc of shit mechanics, busted aiming system, and enemies being damage sponges is not challenging, its just annoying.
re4 remake really isnt that hard of a game, only part of the game i thought was genuine bullshit was the 2 garrador room. but even that is easy even on professional with a fully upgraded bolt action rifle. but i didnt have a fully upgraded bolt action on my first playthrough lol, which was on hardcore. personally hardcore felt perfectly balanced, was never too hard or too easy, if it werent for parrying yeah this game would suck ass but because of that mechanic the game isnt too hard. besides fucking grab attacks i hate how there is no way to dodge those besides crouching and getting lucky
I really dislike that they got rid of the cheesy lines that the old game had, loses a lot for the charm that made the original so special and the new ones aren't memorable at all
@@thomasfire0717 They did get rid of most of them, though. The bingo line from the demo was basically bait to reassure fans that the lines would be in the game and they pulled the carpet from under their feet when the full game launched. So he's not really wrong when he's saying that they got rid of the cheesy lines that the old game had. And it doesn't matter if they added in a bunch of new lines instead, because like the OP said, those are nowhere near on par as the ones in the original.
@@superplayerex2431 The only reason people like the old lines because nostalgia. Its not fair to dismiss the new lines due to that. If they kept all lines literally the same people would complain more about unoriginality. Only lines I'd agree with are the flirty ones. And id say even some of those were evenly replaced.
@@DmanDice I'd say you are completely wrong because I only really played the original Resident Evil 4 just a couple of years ago and I didn't even think it was some sort of masterpiece, it was just a really good game. As someone who acknowledges the faults of the original, I see a decent number of changes in the remake that are both good and bad, and the lines are most definitely a downgrade. Do not chalk up people that disagree with you to nostalgia. And while the new lines in the remake are not without their own merit, it's still very clear that the old lines did not need to be removed in the first place. Humor is fairly subjective after all, so there can't really be any improvement on throwaway lines that were already great and memorable in the original game. That is something everyone should've realized day one.
@@superplayerex2431 I shouldnt say the only reason was nostalgia. But that definitely plays a huge part for many people. Including myself. I would have been pissed if they left out the Bingo line. The fact that you played it at a later time is why you ironically can even critique it. You have to understand, there are many people that call the original a perfect game and no matter what the new one did, it could never be better. Maybe you dont fall into that category, but if thats not nostalgia I dont know what is.
A correction on stagger RNG. It’s not even RNG. It’s just that enemies have multiple health bars in addition to their regular HP, and each weapon has hidden stats for each reaction (stopping power, dismemberment, and melee openers). The punisher has the best hidden stats for melee stuns btw, in case you’re curious. So not unlike the OG, different enemies have different health, but it’s consistent. There’s no RNG outside of crits. I’m surprised that with multiple playthroughs you never noticed certain enemies always stun or dismember in one shot. And if you’re using weapons with low stagger damage but high firepower (red9), you’ll notice enemies can die before triggering stuns. That’s because you’re exceeding their regular HP before the stun threshold is met.
This is extremely interesting and important info. Can you give me a source or just a comment with further analysis? My only real issue with the game is the RNG stagger, so if i am wrong about that, it might change my entire view of the game and my next run as well.
@@SolonGaming not really, it’s incomplete info atm so I don’t wanna say too much and potentially spread misinformation. I’m sure it will get published somewhere in easy to read format eventually. Just know that the three aforementioned hidden stats increase alongside Damage upgrades. The rates are mostly the same but still different on different guns. So if you want easy stuns even on Professionals, take Punisher + lasersight, and keep it’s damage upgraded.
The more I play this game the more frustrated I get. The game feels pretty amazing the first playthru, but upon follow up playthrus you will notice some glaring issues like being stunlocked combod, how you lose control of your character if you get hit by a fire weapon(torch), sometimes leaving a melee prompt gets you hit because leons kick is small, but when he exits the animation he has no s so he can't defend himself. My god are the guns inaccurate. I've accidentally killed Ashely several times with the TMP in the garbage disposal because the spread is HUGE. Why is the magnum so hard to stabilize, granted it's OP if you can stablize it then let rip even Vertigo melts on a maxed butterfly. Sometimes you trade with the enemy, you'll shoot a shotgun shell and they'll hit you the same frame and you don't get the shot out, but it eats one of your bullets. Bosses can regen health if you take too long in sequences. They added several awesome new guns that you don't get access till very late in the game making it feel pointless. I've had multiple instances of me shotgunning a ganado and a head parasite comes out and proceeds to bitch slap the ever living fuck out of me, and stunlock me from FULL in a 3 hit combo mean while im mashing the briefcase button to try to heal, but i CAN'T EVEN HEAL THRU THE FUCKING COMBO HELP ME IT'S SO CHEAP. I very fairly get mad at PvE game, but I straight up have yelled at my monitor due to the clunkyness of the character handling at times, i've had several instances of accidentally vaulting or dropping down from somewhere even tho leon isn't even near the ledge leading me to getting combo'd like it's a fkin fighting game. Still a great game, but I feel a few changes would really improve it. Mercanaries is low key mid. Krauser is fine, and leon is exactly what you expect but hulk and Luis are just so underwhelming. Hulk's melee kill is extremely slow to the point it's a risk to use, and Krauser's bow is REALLY slow to draw up a arrow for some reason. Besides that mercenaries is pretty intense and a good addition to get you that little RE fix. Krauser do be feelin like a savage badass when you play him. Now looking forward to separate ways and seeing "it" boss fight coming back.
I cant get over the censorship and cut content, man. The game is fun, yeah, but i just have a zero tolerance policy for that crap now. The game could've been much better had they not been infected by the W virus.
"Censorship" so you can't be a horny loser that looks at upskirts? You know that the added content is greater than the cut content, right? Separate Ways is coming later.
I agree. Although even without that, the micro-transactions still would've led me to avoid it. Cutting content just to sell it for money is asinine, but the treasure one is especially egregious.
Been watching your content for years man. You've been such an inspiration and even motivated me to start my own youtube channel. My own RE4 Remake Review got 12k views, so thanks Synthetic Man for helping me achieve my youtube dreams.
Your review was one of the first ones I watched! Great and balanced take. Except my ears did bleed on your Ashley rant lol. I absolutely agree with the merchant being annoying because he doesn’t stfu!
I really agree with this review. A lot of mechanics in the OG are fun to play and Capcom should've kept them: 1 face hit to stagger; melee attacks never triggers parasite; i-frames. The new mechanics are not bad. And as long as players learn enemy positions and spawns, the Professional S+ without Chicago is not that bad. But on the other hand I keep thinking, it feels like I'm playing The Evil Within here. In the original, skilled players can stand against hordes of enemies in PRO difficulty. In the remake, skilled players avoid standing against hordes. It just does not feel like RE4... I kind of wish the higher difficulty is not simply by making the enemy bullet sponge and immune to staggering. But rather add more variety of attacks, restrict player weapon upgrades etc ..
"n the original, skilled players can stand against hordes of enemies in PRO difficulty. In the remake, skilled players avoid standing against hordes. It just does not feel like RE4..." In other words, the remake feels more like a horror game than action game.... I guess that's good or bad depends who you ask.
I like this game a lot, but I’m SOOO glad someone called out the sluggish dogshit controls. My first play through was incredibly frustrating because Leon is very unresponsive in terms of mobility. The fight against Salazar was agonizing.
Honestly I feel this game is way easier then the original giving all the new gameplay features. Although I completely agree the main villain's where ruined when it comes to there personalities. I'm surprised you forgot that Ashely straight asked Leon for some "overtime" in the original game, but of course they cut that from the remake.
lol what? ashley still asks that using other words. and leon actually agrees, thats why hunnigan keeps talking to them and both ignore her lol how the fuck did you miss that?
@cameronsanchez2204 I got about 10 playthroughs on the remake and God only knows how many I got on the OG. My playtime on the PS4 version alone is over 150 hours and I own every version of the original. On Standard difficulty the remake is way easier then the OG because of the parry system, charms and cases, being able to move and shoot, and the OP melee attacks. On Pro I still say the remake is slightly easier, but it's in no way a walk in the park.
You know what the game reminded me of the most in gameplay and difficulty? The first Evil Within, the same stupidly hard difficulty that offers you nearly no ammo with the amount of enemies it throws at you and you can only craft ammo for the crossbow, thank God they improved it in ew2 and actually made the game fun.
As someone who's in the middle of playing ew2 rn, the contrast between how responsive Sebastian's movement is compared to remake Leon is staggering. Sebastian turns on a dime, switches between knife and weapon in one frame, and there's no god damn quick time events. If only the enemies actually dropped ammo once in a while... I spent so much time waiting for handgun bullets to respawn during boss fights it isn't funny.
Because the remake is rip off of EW2. Consider this factors: -Enemies all use same swarm tactics like in EW and EW2, which wasnt in OG, they all tried to attack you mainly from front. -The movement and stealth is all from EW1 and EW2. -The Chainsaw guy QTE is same as the one from EW2 when you fight the trio bosses (Sadist, Keeper, Laura) and when you steal Sadists chainsaw and use it against him and he blocks it with knife. Search the QTE on YT or google and compare them, Im not making this up, its literally same animation.
Holy shit they actually made Salazar into Klaus-Schwab-in-drag? I didn't really mind Ashley wearing shorts, since I find short shorts a little bit hotter than miniskirts tbh, but what did they do to my boy Salazar? Are you shitting me? The most iconic villain of RE4?
Umm...no, he doesn't "shit on Luis for no real reason". Leon's first run-in with Luis, Luis ditches him mid-battle after Leon got captured trying to rescue him. The next time Leon sees him, Luis is intentionally evasive about who he is and why he's there. Then Hunnigan later informs him that Luis is a former Umbrella scientist. I agree he's a bit too antagonistic with Luis for most of the game, but it's not like the game didn't establish why Leon doesn't like him from the start. By contrast, Luis in the original game is fairly up-front and decent with Leon from the start, as they chat about Raccoon City for a bit before they escape. Gotta say, it kinda bugs me how Umbrella was mostly yanked out of this game. Aside from Luis being a former Umbrella Scientist, it never comes up. This is the game that originally established that Umbrella had collapsed, and Krauser was allegedly attempting to re-form it. That was cut out, too.
@@BabyGirlTiny That would never happen in real life. if Umbrella was that big, theyd lie and blame Racoon city on anything else and the media would call us conspiracy theorists for not believing them.
You're one of the few reviewers I trust since a lot of UA-camrs now are too afraid to speak truthfully, either they are bought off or don't want backlash from the internet.
OK I need you to explain this. Are you a bot or a real human? When everybody likes something why do you think it's cause they're afraid of backlash? Maybe (oh idk) it's cause the game is good? Shocking concept I know
@@nolanlehman6392 There is a huge incentive to be positive no matter what (if you’re an individual review channel). It’ll get you into studios’ good graces which can mean early review copies, but also involved in their PR (hosting/joining their official streams) and whatnot which is even more money. I mean, the review journalist to company PR pipeline has been well demonstrated with big review sites. And that’s where they actually have a steady pay rate. Let alone a youtuber with a fluctuating algorithm and pay. It’s a way for those people to move up and try to escape the UA-cam algorithm because trying to live off of that long-term is extremely risky than getting in bed and eventually hired by a company. Also, the internet is toxically positive. Yes there’s obviously the opposite side, but look at any major game announcement trending. If you mention any worries or criticisms there’s WAY more people who will say “just let people have fun” or “stop ruining my hype” than those saying “no one should like this game”. You’re not allowed to voice concerns of a game because so many people live in “hype culture” (marketing buzz overglow). They don’t want to confront the possibility of a game not being some super-amazing thing they’ve built up in their head (or bought into all the marketing without considering what it doesn’t say about it). So they tell other people to shut up because they live in a bubble and any opposing thought will burst it. Rather than see it for what it is and entertain possible issues as they’re brought up. And the irony is a lot of time these people will say “you’re being too negative” (when most aren’t, it’s just that they get annoyed their concerns are immediately disregarded) will agree with most/all of the points the “negative” person made…. 6-12 months later. After the hype phase is gone and it’s no longer part of the cultural zeitgeist in the first 1-2 weeks before/after launch. And a bunch are usually issues that have happened with a lot of other games, but the toxically positive people ignored the warning signs. And despite learning a hard lesson… they fall for it again with the next big release. They keep falling for the marketing when the marketing will never highlight what’s negative about it. Or spin it into a way to make it sound positive.
@@mrshmuga9 That's true to some extend (no man's sky and cyberpunk come to mind), but to have that view for the majority of critics is nihilistic and reductive. Just cause IGN makes some bad reviews doesn't mean people like skill up or ACG aren't good at what they do. It seems to me like there's been a wave of counter positivity just for the sake of it in many cases. It's undeniable some people choose to not like things or be willfully dickish because the vast majority enjoy it and they wanna feel special. It's not all the time, but it's certainly a thing. I can't take someone seriously when a legitimate criticism of re4 remake is you can no longer look up Ashley's skirt. Like.. are you fucking serious lol
@@nolanlehman6392 “Counter positivity” only really comes from viewers/commenters. There aren’t any review channels with a decent size following that are contrarians for the sake of attention (I can only think of one guy and he’s clearly game-ing the algorithm just by looking at his thumbnails). Everyone else are either neutral or positive. It’s not like you can’t find some decent reviewers in the rough, but the biggest ones will definitely downplay criticisms to cozy up to studios. Because they’ll host their streams or do some sort of PR for them. A clear conflict of interest but they don’t care. You’re ignoring the reality of content creation. A lot of these individual content creators eventually want at get a job at one of these companies, because they’re not so much interested in being a reviewer as much as they’re fans of XYZ and talking about/reviewing games at release is the quickest way to build an audience. They know they likely can’t rely on UA-cam revenue forever, which is why they pivot to an industry job. It’s smart, but it’s not ethical when you’re aware and reflect on their content. “People just want to be contrarian because X is popular” Have you entertained the thought that they’re just disappointed with the choices made? Why is it that just because “everybody” loves something, if you don’t it’s only because you just want to be a “hater?”. I can acknowledge that there’s probably some people who are more positive about something because the criticisms levied aren’t issues for them. But you can’t ignore the clear incestuous nature of the industry. You will likely not be able to be a “content creator” from 20-70 like you could with any other job. So at some point they need a backup plan or way to shift gears to something different/more reliable. That would be working at a company with a stable income, and where do you hit up first? Companies you already have a relationship with. And if you’re thinking ahead, it will likely impact your reviews. When you write that review, consciously of subsconiously, you might hold back because you’re worried if you’re “too harsh” that company might not keep you so close (or cut ties at worst) and you lose your opportunity. Which isn’t really an issue working for a company like IGN because you probably have multiple roles (various skills) and/or you have a steady income anyway. You don’t have to worry if your review only got 1,000 views versus 500,000 views. You get paid regardless. Content creators are not always “more honest” than those big sites because they don’t have any rules/procedures to follow, nor have a backup. If they get 100 views that month, they don’t get money despite whatever work they did. It’s incredibly more risky which means you’re more likely to play things _more_ safely.
Pretty much everything that he said I agree with. I don’t know why the hell modern resident evil games feel the need to have us run stupid slow. I don’t know what was wrong with the running speed of the original or why they couldn’t have adapted it to be somewhat like that, considering it’s an action oriented game. Even the original trilogy had a faster movement speed than these remakes. I noticed, even in the remake of the first resident evil that they slow down the character a bit. I think this is just a problem with Capcom because they’ve done this for a long time. They think realism is slower movement for some reason.
Played the Remake and the orignal back to back, I still find the orignal scarier, I know people say it isn't horror but I always felt tense throughout whereas in the REmake its way more obvious when something spooky is about to happen.
yep imagine paying for a mode that was free in the original a mode that recycles most of the levels but you play as an uninterested sounding ada this time around and theres 1 to 2 new bosses and plus adas VA irl is just
Also, Ada looked amazing in the original, the one in the remake has a weird plastic face like everyone in these remakes cause RE Engine is just bad with faces.
@26:00, the hive is not gone. The Ballroom is exactly overtop the hive in the Mines section. If you look through the cracked floor where the Novistadors rise up from, you can see the top of the hive. The castle is definitely re-imagined, but I quite like it. The old castle didn't really feel like a medieval castle to me; it felt way too bright.
This has been said before but remaking games that were great to begin with isn't as impressive as remaking a game that was almost great. Of course one makes way more money, but taking a chance to fix up an old game is more interesting.
Synthetic Man basically summed it all up perfectly here. Cool game for sure, but i agree Leon's movements don't feel precise or tight enough sometimes when you change direction. You turn around and it sometimes feels like you're tripping over your own feet. You move in one direction but Leon goes in a slightly different direction for a split second. You move but your character animations take over for a second and drag you off course. Leon's running animations should have no effect on your movement inputs. The game would be so much better with tighter more precise movement. I agree on the Verdugo boss fight too. Feels like you beat him with luck rather than skill. Hit the nitro and Verdugo usually comes from the wrong direction. You don't get time to see where he's coming from then hit the nitro button. I guess its possible to do the boss without getting hit if you're good at blocking his attacks with the knife. Im not though. Verdugo boss fight was designed better in the original. I totally agree on the Ashley thing too. The 'wait' command in the original was far better than this new system where she's either glued to you or pisses off and runs into the enemy or your line of fire. I was totally pissed that Mercenaries was dlc too. Should deffo have been in the game on release.
Finally someone mentions the controls. I play on PS5 and the remake is simply not as responsive as the original was. It feels like it has much bigger deadzone in aiming and the movement is somehow even more slugish than the tank controls of the original. But that’s mostly because it wasn’t really changed enough from the “survival horror” remakes. In the combination with RNG combat, when shots sometimes stun the enemies and other times they don’t, it’s a pain on higher difficulties. Other than that it’s still propably the best RE engine remake, even though some of the characters were clearly downgraded, but I didn’t mind the changes to the locations
My biggest issue is definitely the cheesy Hardcore/Professional, I really thought it was going to be engaging in a good way but I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up since any Japanese game with difficulty options and not just a set one are almost always artificially hard and not the thrilling kind. I went through my first playthrough on hardcore knowing that it was apparently a pain, but I'm super stubborn and if a game has a difficulty option and it isnt too unfair then I always go for it. Took my time and got like a 15 hour B rank and now I'm doing professional, got my shit kicked in getting adjusted to it and I was already at like 5 hours retrying stuff, went back earlier today and was able to first try the village and get past what I had been taking a while on a day before a lot quicker. The early sections are definitely the most frustrating since you cant reliably stagger Ganados at all until you can upgrade the Silver Ghost or actually have ammo for the Shotgun. Also knowing that deluxe edition players get some extra treasure spawning shit enabled for them that they can turn off, but it's still frustrating. It makes me feel elitist for saying so but I just dont know if I can take the opinion of people that end up playing with all the bonus safety-net shit as much as someone that plays the base game with no filler shit. Which wouldn't be a problem if they just didnt have this aforementioned shit muddying the waters but it's Capcom and they need to pad everything with a fuckton of small payments.
This reminds me of ‘Sifu’, in the sense that the game was innately quite hard, but unlike RE4, I wanted to test myself more and more the better I got. It’s crazy to think how a game like Sifu that so many normies thought was ‘difficult’ was the one game I wanted to try at the hardest difficulty. It’s a great contrast to RE4; fluid and response controls, animation cancelling, wide moveset variety to help you tackle all kinds of situations… Now that was FUN.
@@hagoromootsutski9058 Sifu on the hardest difficulty is kinda bad though... The enemies are perfect, they behave exactly the way they're supposed to, but the Bosses are straight up terrible. They become so inhumanely OP that you have to resort to cheese tactics and exploit the Bosses AI if you want to have even the slightest chance of victory. IMO Sifu would've been perfect if we had the enemy difficulty of Hard mode, but with the Boss difficulty of Normal mode.
@@artemis1993 it ain’t called master for nothing. Personally I only found this true for Fajar with his annoying sweeps which seem like you can’t even react to them. All other bosses were fine - with some added mixups.
Seems like Ada's VA isn't the only problem. Most of them are. Especially Krauser and Wesker. We've gone from Epic voice actors to normal sounding people, probably because Capcom is too cheap to hire the original VA's, and instead use new people who will take a smaller paycheck.
I'm having a good time with it, but you're 100% on the spot with this one. Real gamers adore this game and know exactly how it's going. I would no way play this remake over like the original.
I have a feeling a lot of people don't like this critique/review but just remember, he's not being a critic bc he doesn't like the game, he's doing it bc he knows it could be/could've been much better.
28:41 No other reviewer would even dare try to reveal and mention that or any other personal failing while playing or in their review so honestly like you, Synthetic. You're almost one or two of a kind. 37:33 NOMEP, rookie!
The castle definitely feels like it was redesigned to feel less over-the-top or feel like you're dealing with "impossible space" where you have a room that is impossibly large or makes no actual since to fit in the area that it is actually placed. I think it is more for trying to make things flow better and shorten/remove some of the more frustrating segments like lava room. At least that's what I'm guessing.
I wish they would have kept the video call screens in this remake too they are so cool to this day. Kind of the same thing with the original fallout games when you talk to certain NPCs.
I have started 2 playthroughs on Hardcore that I've yet to finish, the second being an attempt at finding some fun in the game. Beyond it being mirthless, it's not just the controls (which is a huge problem for me) that bug me, it's the very nature of its design where the idea of taking the slow, sluggish controls from RE2make and importing it over to REm4ke and just making every enemy as fast as you are and sponge-y, while making ammo drops RNG based, and designing the game for careless speedrun, makes it hard for me even just to finish this game once. All of your problems were exactly my problems, too, and I guess I'm just not forgiving as most people are. It's not that this game is "too hard" for me, it's not even the "resource management," but it's the attitude that was applied to this of "let's do what the original did but opposite and that's what makes it modern" that really puts me off. Frantic doesn't always mean fun, and that's all I just found this game was geared to do. Induce a frantic situation so you can play it the way it wants you to play it: by holding forward until you reach the door at the other end of the room, or until a timer winds down.
I honestly thought I was the only one who noticed how slow Leon is. Res4 original is my favorite game so I’ve played it a lot so that was the first thing I noticed in the remake especially the input delay. I hope they fix this stuff in a patch or something. NOW the Ashely mechanic is so freaking annoying. I was Actually was fine with it in the original but them adding the injury mechanic I kinda understand the thought but the way it played out was not good at all. And when I tell her to stay put I don’t mean just follow behind farther I actually mean stay where you are and don’t move. This was my biggest problem from the remake but other then that I really like this game
Agree with both points. They’re really the biggest drawbacks on the game. Leon doesn’t feel great to control at all. You can get used to it but then again you can get used to anything. Ashley was impossible to work with on higher difficulties though. She should be glued to Leon’s back like the OG but because of his control issues w Leon in this engine, they probably couldn’t get that to work
@@Eversoul12 you probably feel that way because the Original controls are like you have to stop to aim or stop to turn around which I could understand it’s not for everyone. But once I’ve gotten used to it the controls feel really good. Ig the problem with the remakes leon is that he still moves like he does in Res2 remake which this doesn’t work in a action game like the guy said. Like when I go back to the original it’s night and day on how fast leon is in there compared to here
People should be critical of remakes and the OG should be held in an even higher regard. You don't get to just remake/repackage a "masterpiece" and sell it under the same title for a vastly inferior experience that does away with the original intents and design elements instead of buidling on top. Any remake that removes stuff is an instant downgrade.
I was waiting to hear your opinion. Wasn’t really interested in the game, but I don’t trust most reviewers to believe whatever they’re saying. Most want to get in bed with studios so they won’t really bring up criticisms or downplay them a ton.
Hey man just discovered your channel and agree with a lot of what you talk about regarding the state of modern media. Just wanted to say keep up the good work, nice to know there are still some sane people on this planet.
I just beat the game on hardcore and got my s plus rank. I have to say that on the harder difficulties the controls really get exposed for being dogshit. Leon is so slow and enemies are not only bullet sponges but seemingly teleport around the map. I love this game but it's no where near as fun as the og re4.
Everyone thought Ashley would be ruined the most by wokeness in this game, but surprisingly and ironically, it's Ada who go screwed over the most because people don't know what "voice acting" is supposed to be anymore. This remake wasn't as bad and as woke as I thought it was going to be, but I still wouldn't pay more than $30 for it.
At least they zoom in on her ass in every cutscene. I swear, almost every cinematic with Ada starts with a close-up of either her ass or legs. It's so funny.
And they added paid microtransactions to the Mercenaries too. Plus, rumor is the missing Ada bonus content will be sold as dlc and not "free" like Mercenaries. 10/10 IGN. I'd take at least 2 points off for this modern gaming baloney.
@@Gruntvc Best part? How the zoomers and capcom fanboys thirsting for Ashley support this. Anytime EA or Ubisoft does this then everyone rages but when Capcom or any other japanese company does it, then no one says anything lmao.

I'm just so sick of remakes/remasters at this point that even when they are good I find it hard to care. The majority of big releases this year so far have been remakes/remasters, it's just boring to me.

Revolutionary is an overrated comparison is like comparing James Naismith to Michael Jordan.
We live in a very risk averse world, I'm afraid.
this is the exact problem with 1:1 remakes. at the end of the day, it'll be nothing special

Great video, part of the problem with the movement are ‘deadzones’ where input for movement isn’t registered until your analog stick reaches a certain point it’s really aggravating. Bosses just don't shut up. Mendez in the original was creepy because of his inhuman grunts. Same with OG Krauser, simple "heh" while shoving knife through Leon's chest was so much better than endless banter.
Krauser had zero depth and was just an add on for Leon's cool factor(potential rival). C'mon now.
@@mysteryace2129 and adding a bunch of quotes about how they were friends does not add depth.

Great voice acting in the original? Are you taking the piss. Leon sounded awkward as shit in the original.

Oh well.
Ada sounds like the female Ben Stein in this game.😂
Someone praised Remakes Ada's voice, saying you need a good headset to appreacite her voice
they removed the castle rooms too with the rpg guys and the rotating crossbows.
You are absolutely right about the lack of replayability with modern games. I replayed all of the God of War games except the new ones.
Lol, this game is extremely replayable
You're spot on with how slow it is to turn and run, it was brutally painful, which i was not expecting. i had to crank sensitivity up just to make it halfway responsive and tolerable. aside from that i beat it 8 times and loved it.
Even Dead Rising 3 was less clunky.
Must such playing with a controller
You do a 180 turn. If you tilt back and the run button, it tells you in the controls.

If only i had the budget Konami or Capcom has.
if mayo is your biggest influence then Im sad for you
If you're making a survival horror game and want the player to be truly, and I mean TRULY scared, then add detrimental/irreversible consequences to dying. Make the player afraid of dying first and foremost, because if they have no reason to fear dying, then they have no reason to fear the things that can kill them.
@@TheCyclicGamer I disagree

The indirects to under the mayo were a nice touch. Finally found someone who said how stupid the "hard=good" mentality is idiotic.
he never said hard is simply good, he meant it is good for a game to be difficult enough to make you use all the different mechanics rather than just baby you like a lot of AAA titles and make the player care nothing about the mechanics the game has to offer
one example is devil may cry 5, it has more than 100 moves and a cool ass style meter but most players don't use 90% of the mechanics because you can just stinger your way through the game, as for re4 remake, I don't think this game is difficult at all, specifically in normal, I'd argue it could even use more difficulty to have a better horror impact.

I really dislike that they got rid of the cheesy lines that the old game had, loses a lot for the charm that made the original so special and the new ones aren't memorable at all
Yeah you definitely didn't play the game if you think they got rid of cheesy lines from this game.
@@superplayerex2431
I shouldnt say the only reason was nostalgia.

After (somehow) 5 playthroughs of 4 remake and 4 playthroughs of og, I think remake is a bit harder. Especially on professional.
@Aveteran Player 0/10 response.
You didn't play the game.
Consider this factors:
-Enemies all use same swarm tactics like in EW and EW2, which wasnt in OG, they all tried to attack you mainly from front.

I agree. But at least now this gives them more of a chance to think up something better than Umbrellas stocks crashing lol.
@@DmanDice to be fair, that’s generally how big business would fall. In order for a business to fail the stock and everything around it has to fall.
@@BabyGirlTiny
That would never happen in real life. if Umbrella was that big, theyd lie and blame Racoon city on anything else and the media would call us conspiracy theorists for not believing them.
Shocking concept I know
@@nolanlehman6392
>ask someone to explain something
>already has everything assumed and think hes in the right
Ye if anything youre the bot lol
“People just want to be contrarian because X is popular”
Have you entertained the thought that they’re just disappointed with the choices made?
They think realism is slower movement for some reason.
maybe to inflate game time?
My neurons activated when you mentioned Berserk
The kneecap stun isn’t random. You have to shoot out both kneecaps and it’s a guaranteed stun
Played the Remake and the orignal back to back, I still find the orignal scarier, I know people say it isn't horror but I always felt tense throughout whereas in the REmake its way more obvious when something spooky is about to happen.
"drag queen story hour" lmfao. I love your reviews bro
Totally can't wait for the Ada DLC with that level of voice acting talent. Yup, super-stoked.
yep imagine paying for a mode that was free in the original
a mode that recycles most of the levels but you play as an uninterested sounding ada this time around and theres 1 to 2 new bosses
and plus adas VA irl is just
Also, Ada looked amazing in the original, the one in the remake has a weird plastic face like everyone in these remakes cause RE Engine is just bad with faces.
Yeah I'm not buying Ada's seperate ways because of the voice acting if it was free than sure I'll play it but base game is what I play anyways
@@Disconnect350re village did good. I'd day chris redfield in village looked badass.
The original castle to me felt like a castle in a amusement theme park.
congrats on a 100K subs man ... keep up the good work.
It’s a great contrast to RE4; fluid and response controls, animation cancelling, wide moveset variety to help you tackle all kinds of situations…
Now that was FUN.
I noticed the music you chose for discussing day one paid dlc. Well played my goyim brother.
I'm having a good time with it, but you're 100% on the spot with this one. Real gamers adore this game and know exactly how it's going. I would no way play this remake over like the original.
No Leon talking shit/joking around with Ashley + constant talking during gameplay = game is bad. No arguments.
Thank you for this review. Its refreshing to see reviews that aren't done by Capcom shills.I TIP MY HAT TO YOU SIR!!!!!!
i was hoping for a black trans Leon
Keep your diversity garbage out of the games industry
The castle definitely feels like it was redesigned to feel less over-the-top or feel like you're dealing with "impossible space" where you have a room that is impossibly large or makes no actual since to fit in the area that it is actually placed. I think it is more for trying to make things flow better and shorten/remove some of the more frustrating segments like lava room. At least that's what I'm guessing.
If i already have re4, why even get this?
I wish they would have kept the video call screens in this remake too they are so cool to this day. Kind of the same thing with the original fallout games when you talk to certain NPCs.
Based review. Loving your contact man. Recently subbed ❤
She should be glued to Leon’s back like the OG but because of his control issues w Leon in this engine, they probably couldn’t get that to work
man i really dont understand this take at all. I played the OG before and after playing the remake and the old game feels like turd to control.
The N95 Mask should make you more fragile. One hit death mode.
I was waiting to hear your opinion. Wasn’t really interested in the game, but I don’t trust most reviewers to believe whatever they’re saying. Most want to get in bed with studios so they won’t really bring up criticisms or downplay them a ton.

I doubt it was intentional. TEW 1 and 2 were flops. I liked them both for the record.
@@HenryMythwhy were they flops? I haven't played them yet but I plan to.

What is wokeness?
Would have preferred RE2Make Ada voice actress instead of Welcome to Netflix Raccoon City Ada actress 🤷🏻
Wait till he finds out that Ada and Wesker were cut from Mercenaries to be sold later 😂
And they added paid microtransactions to the Mercenaries too.
