But but do you realize that this game will be played by stupid children who will later cry because the quest npc is dead and who will never accept to pay for their mistakes. Well we live in a world where parent never say no!
They're essential to quests that don't really matter to the story. Plus they could be killed and replaced with another npc who will serve the same purpose but that doesn't happen either.

@@kukipett Could also be a way to ensure missions can always be completed, unlike some quests in Skyrim where assassin guild could send you to kill someone you than needed for another quest later on... And killing someone cause they "insulted" you is quite the immature reaction.

Honestly I would prefer if they put all their resources into a project like that instead of asking us to sit through this game first. The whole appeal of Bethesda games is seeing how far modders can push it.
They'll sell you the creation kit for $150 and it will "update" every week and completely break.

the real issue here is how 90% of reviewers including youtubers gave it a positive rating the week of release, the same ppl who mocked the facial animations of Mass Effect Andromeda, when the animations in Starfield are actually worse and they never brought it up.
theyre not worse than andromeda, and andromeda was compared to ME trilogy which was a cinematic masterpiece that no game will top for 50 years, the downgrade in terms of acting, world building and everything was heartbreaking not just disappointing, starfield isnt as much as a disappontment as that game was, still very disappointing but its not the level of andromeda

Gamers refuse to accept that most AAA studios age like milk, not wine. Great development teams make great studios, not the other way around.

Starfield is what you get from continuously lowering the average IQ of a dev team over the course of two decades.

For me Bethesda is Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Even tho this games became more and more casual they still had a lot of great quests and slapping a ton of RP / Hardcore mods on top of them still gives them very good RPG flavor to this day.
And for Blizzard their peak absolutely was Warcraft 3 and countless genres and games born from custom maps made for this game.
Starfield felt like playing D&D with a DM who is aggressively trying to keep all the players from derailing the story.

Why is it that all these modern games have the most terrifying human faces? It's like a nightmare. Stop making eyelids that retract all the way behind the eyeball.
Starfield feels like it was explicitly designed around the mantra "modders will do it later". See those vast wastelands that encompass 95% of the game? Modders will fill all that space out later. Bare-bones, copy-pasted quests? Modders will flesh them out later. Meaningless factions? Modders. Basic QoL options? Modders.
This entire game is Bethesda throwing their hands up in the air and admitting that anyone with a lick of talent or vision at the company left years ago and that the people on payroll now are less competent than Moe Modder who does their job better than them in his spare time.
But how dare the modders remove the pronouns.

You can kill anybody in New Vegas, you can even kill Yes Man. He does come back, but there’s actually logical reasons why he can keep coming back. He’s a computer program and can load himself into any securitron.
Yup - two things.
First, you need passion. Big studios just don't have it. When your team is super passionate, they will work hard on making their vision work. Baldur's Gate 3 is proof of that. Elden Ring is proof of that. At the end of the day, you need people behind the game that really care about it.
Second, great writers are hard to get and are super underappreciated, something that is becoming more and more obvious looking at the AAA gaming industry.
You could feel the love the developers had for Skyrim. It’s why I still play it, to this day. BGS has really lost its way, hopefully they get back on track for TESVI and FO5.
@@robotron1236 Nope, they won't. Skyrim was already a massive downgrade in terms of RPG mechanics compared to previous iterations. Ever since then, their games have gotten more and more simplified. Fallout 4/76 and now Starfield are all first person looter shooters with perk systems that are replacing any and all meaningful RPG mechanics from the past, and that's all Bethesda can churn out now.
Skyrim had better NPC interaction and immersiveness. Guards would warn you about shouting or having a weapon drawn, NPCs would pick up and even fight over an object you dropped. In Starfield they do nothing. You can fire a gun all around them and they stare blankly at you. Did Bethesda forget how to program in the last 12 years?
Freelancer, a 20 year old game, did interstellar and planet-planet travel (jump gates and trade lanes) way better than fast travel ping ponging all over the galaxy.
And don't get me started on how lazy and simplistic obtaining powers is in Starfield vs shouts in Skyrim.
Yet fanboys still defend this utter disrespect and disdain that Bethesda has for them.
Starfield is like a microcosm of what all modern big games are like. Every big game feels bland, inoffensive, tasteless, soulless. Nowadays I simply play older games, smaller niche games and some indies. My brain naturally filters out all the AAA gaming media and 'reviewers' by now because I just know nothing out there is worth it and the vast majority of it is shills getting paid to deceive you (sometimes they aren't even getting paid, they are too psychologically attached to their favorite companies which might be worse). It's depressing.
I am the same way. I think the last major AAA game I bought was Red Dead 2, and before that was GTA 5. Everything else is smaller stuff. Why tf would I play games like Starfield when I have Warhammer40k Darktide?
It's definitely the latter. It's obvious that the intelligence of consumers and just the public in general has taken a sharp dive over the past few years. The customer dictates the market in any field and naturally this is going to carry over into the gaming scene. You can see the results. The bar is now extremely low, and there is little to no quality control because people have no standards. The inability to accept that something you like is now trash, even when presented with some of the most crystal clear, in your face evidence possible is 100% an intelligence issue. I can pick apart just about anything I enjoy. That's called being rational. Most people are mentally conditioned npcs now and because of this it will only get worse.
Most of the time I am doing that as well, but BG3 for instance was pretty enjoyable, even though it has too much woke agenda in it.
I dunno about inoffensive, this game is unsettling and almost demonic in its conceptualization of the future, this is rancid slop and Todd was a mistake. I hope if this is what space flight looks like 'humanity' never leaves this rock, they don't deserve to skinwalk actual humans in space.

@@synergygaming65 Fallout 4 was good in terms of gameplay mechanics but bad in terms of structue and pacing. You don't earn power armor. You get it given to you. Plasma weapon and a certain handgun is also overpowered. Deathclaws are dreduced to solo jokes as well. They don't threaten the player anymore because they're too isolated. And plasma weapons kill them in a matter a moments. Even on survival. It's just too easy.
And you know Fallout 4 is too black and white with it's story. The factions are too on the rails. Other Fallout games tend to have the player manipulate the factions more somehow. You're just bitching about bitching. Maybe there's good reason people bitch in the first place. You ddin't consider why. You didn't mention context. You lied about how it's about "everything" when you made a snap judgement devoid of context. All that shows is that you didn't think and use your brain and consider reasons with context about why people bitch.
New vegas had it all done better. RPG, pacing. No big enclave fights (unfortunately) but it gets so much done right. This is an example of context with criticism. Specific reasons. Too many people make blank carpet statements devoid of context and that's likely why people can't address the problems in games. Little wonder devs can improve on them then.

@@Immopimmo It is pretty easy to write something when you know everything that the character can do and say. It is a single player game where you play as a Witcher called Geralt of Rivia; it isn't an RPG. As a writer, you don't have to take any other consideration into play other than that. Nothing the player does affects the world; you're basically writing a novel or a film the player is witnessing, rather than participating in.
An open, empty world. Huts, all empty; caves all empty with maybe a bit of water in them. Ruined castles, all empty. The problem with a big open world, even an empty one, is that it uses resources. When you want to take the player to a whole new area, with new assets, enemies and have it full of loot; you need loading screens. Otherwise, you're left with the empty world of The Witcher 3 and Read Dead Redemption 2, where everything is just background and empty save for an occasional container or drawer.

Cause Fallout NV was done by the team that worked on the original Fallout 1 and 2. Sadly Todd/Bethesda never got the idea behind the fallout universe.

It's worth mentioning, the Fallout world & lore is good because it was written before Bethesda got involved :D

Starfield story felt so freaking obnoxious, no high stakes, no dark humour, no dark outcomes... Its just happy people doing happy things for the greater good of the multiverse.
Yep, everyone is a goodie two-shoes, and when you go to be a “bad guy” by joining the Crimson Fleet, it’s just a snarky ghey gurl boss who’s annoyingly sarcastic; and mean spirited.
And after you beat the Crimson Fleet side missions, the Fleet intersects with other missions where they’re supposed to be the enemy, but since they’re your allies they don’t see you as an enemy.

I think the oddest part of the whole not being able to take out "essential NPCs" was a seriously missed opportunity in this game because *spoilers ahead* you get to jump to a parallel universe with your character and try again. This would be the perfect situation to allow a more open ended gaming experience.
That would mean they'd need coding and actually make the game workable with more writing for sure.

Honestly yeah, essential npcs makes no sense in the storyline. The game can keep going as long as you get the artifacts and just-reset the universe? A player can't easily softlock themselves & can ussualy just reload.

the "essential characters" thing is really abused in Starfield.
Its like when the DM basically says that an NPC is going to flip on you, and when you and the party retaliate and try to kill him, the DM says: "no, no guys please, he's gonna important, you can't kill him." Hell, the NPC doesn't even have to be antagonistic, the DM just wants you to basically not kill anyone that is named. I hate it.

Truly, of all the disappointments Synth mentions, this is the biggest one for me. These villains are... awful. Like, pathetically bad. Pirates that don't loot and plunder? Gangsters that don't break the law? "I was alive the whole time and orchestrating everything from prison" with no effort to explain how any of that was possible? Space slug diabolus ex machina?
Can Bethesda just not write a compelling villain? One with gravitas? One who exploits human weakness for personal gain? One with a motivation more complex than "the good guys say he's bad, so he's bad?" This is writing I would expect from amateurs. Not a big video game publisher with hundreds of millions of dollars of budget.

Right out the gate when the NPCs asked me what happened when I touched the artifact I said I don't remember anything then then the Barrett dude ask me if I saw anything I said no and then proceeded to tell me I had to go see people to help me understand the visions and music I saw and heard. 57:25 is where he shows a couple good examples that player choice doesn't matter. They literally imply that you can kill them with dialogue, but the game won't let you. Bethesda doesn't care about giving the player choice, but rather making sure you see their set pieces. Essential NPCs are obviously pandering to idiots, but having NPCs be essential just so the game can have you kill them later is egregiously asinine.

But why can't they make it so that player damage doesnt care about an NPC being essential? Or more importantly, why are these bugs that the essential mechanic protects you from still in the game at all after so many iterations of games exactly like this? It was goofy funny in Fallout 3, but that was more than a decade ago.

Why? If people are having a good time (obviously alot of people), isnt that what games are for? The performance is clearly inconsistent across certain rigs, but cloud gaming is excellent.
Either enjoy the game or refund it, like any other media.
It's a bit like going to a really expensive restaurant and having a world-famous chef give you burned food. You can cut off the burned parts and say "Hey, I still enjoyed my meal" and there's nothing wrong with that but if you then say "10/10 meal - absolutely perfect", it tells the chef that what they are doing is acceptable and leads to more of the same.
There are lots of people out there who love Bethesda RPGs but think Starfield sucks. WIth ES6 coming next, that means some will want their voices to be heard so we don't get more of the same next time.
I think that's partly why there's so much argument over this game - the more people claiming Starfield is brilliant, the more likely it is that ES6 will be very similar and for some, that would be a disaster.

My friend was a play tester for this game and he wound up finding the most bugs on his team for this game. I think he told me he found about 2000 bugs/things that needed to be fixed before the game released. The worst part is that he wasn't even on the Starfield play test team for very long, he got transferred 6 months before the game came out.
Well yeah. Eventually the engineers gotta take their list and work on what they can before the game goes gold. With the amount of bugs still left in the game, just imagine how bad the early builds were.

I have for a long time had the opinion that a lot of games are just the same, have the same feel, same concept, same mechanics etc and themes. So many shooters etc are just shit in my opinion. They demand a lot from your computer, they take a lot of spaces, they are expensive, highly inefficient and competitive. Yesterday I decided to have another try at this game.
I found myself back in some generic mining camp, and there were posters on the wall.
Even the posters were generic. One just said "Football" with a picture of football. That's what really pushed me over the edge, because they werent even trying to make the "universe" they "crafted" feel lived in. It felt like I was living in a stock photo.

Starfield has none of the cool stuff from Fallout because Fallout lore wasn't written by Bugthesda, it was written by the people at Black Isle Studios. The guys who wrote the Elder Scrolls lore left Bethesda ages ago. From then on, Bethesda has been living off their work and perverting it to suit their needs, just look at Fallout's Jet and the super mutants.
Bugthesda in its current state can't write original, structured and interesting lore, nor can they make developed, interesting and nuanced NPCs. The best their writers can come up with are meme characters like Preston Garvey and linear, nonsensical main storylines that require you to ask no questions because any amount of scrutiny makes their entire story collapse.

Conditions on Planet before landing- Map is awful - Quests send you to places you can't reach - Lifeless Planets are useless - Copy pasted Bases/Caves... no sign of prcedurally generated Locations - Often looking to Scan "Natural Wonder" that I already Scanned because it's not identifyable from the Picture - Planet Map shows 100% scanned even if it's not because of "Costal Area" - Escort Quests that have you travel 1000m+ for low reward - You can't ban Useless Items from Scanner - Rare/Legendary/Epic Items cause 2sec Game Freeze when Equiped and changing to Scanner or cyceling through Weapons - Space Combat at least unskilled at early Levels is pure Stats Game and often undoable because 3v1 - No feeling of actually flying through Space - You still get Stuck and can not jump when on angled Ground as in FO4/Skyrim/Oblivion... - NPC Money should be infinite or at least increased by 4x - Items you pick up/have in Inventory show the worth they have when you buy them from a Merchant, but they should show what they are worth to you, when you sell them - NPC standing on Pilot Seat so only 3rd Person Space Flight or piloting through gap between NPCs Legs - Enemies/Animals on Planet stacked in a Heap, so you think you will fight 3, but it ends up being 12 or more all stacked into one tiny Spot and into each other - Melee Combat as bad as it was in any other Bethesda Game (look what modders did to Skyrims Combat Animations) - Reloading gets Canceled by running and jumping - Typical Bethesda Bullet-Sponge Enemies - Typical run around/jump over Obsacles and slowly chip away their Health - In Ship flight you need to be able to make custom Presets for "Full Power Weapons, Grav Drive, Engines, Shields..." and bind them to F1-F4 or any other Key you choose - Needs City/Outpost/Other Listing on Star-Map to find the Locations + placement of own nameable Markers - Needs Button to stop Quests from coming in. I get 5 new Quests when running around doing one Quest. I don't know how I got the Quests. I don't know who the Quests are from. I have no connection to them. - Finding Quests is a Nightmare. They need to be Structured much better. Time when Quest received/Location of Quest Giver/Nearby Quests/Location of Quest/Radiant Quest... - Still can't go from Sneak to normal Mode whilst doing any other action / meaning Stealth play feels Crap. Sneak to someone with a Melee Weapon, hit them 1 time, wait for Animation to finish, press "Crouch" Key, wait for your Character to stand up, engage in Comabt. 1995... 19 F*cking 95!!! - I have been playing the Game for 50 hours now and am Level 25 and I still find the same Fire Axe I found on Level 3 over and over 21 DMG - When on the Map Screen, there has to be a Warning that you can not travel at this moment - I am SEETHING because I activated a Mission but the Game decided to not show me that Mission at all, but two other Missions I do not want to do - I decided to do one of the Missions to see what happens... I now have FOUR Map markers. WTF! And I am not allowed to activate even two Missions - Buy Back Disabled as soon as you leave Shopping Window -

Tbh I never liked vats anyway, I always thought it felt cheap. Its basically aimbot for disabled people.

I must be getting old! Fallout 76 has gore and to me that game isn't from the old days. It's even from the same bast#¤%s as this game, what ever they say. Many from the main studio worked on F76.
