At least he's not wrong. After 27 years, the Dark Knight of Vanda finally got the power of the third dimension in the palm of his hands. The 16 bit isn’t even his final form.

Its a touch of genius that they keep the 2D for his 1st form and the rematch made him 3D and all
I wish they would have used the Final battle theme Dancing Mad I stead though would have made it more epic since he looks more like Kefka
I'd like to remind everyone again that Culex's attacks are just Mario-fied versions of actual final fantasy attacks. Dark star is probably something that looks even more devastating.
The four crystals are a reference to four primordial crystal are returning element in most of the final fantasies, and boss theme it's boss the from ff iv, the victory theme form the whole series, and prelude the main theme in the select screen of the majority of the games

The Dark Star reminds me of one of the battle items from a Paper Mario game...

Yes, and no.
The dialogue in the original SNES version was completely changed from his original Japanese script, where he was wondering why everyone was 3D while he was still 2D.
(Obviously, since the game was still *technically* 2D, just with pre-rendered sprites, it didn't translate all that well.)
This is basically the original script coming full circle, thanks to the game being in actual 3D.

Just so you know, the crystal shard doesn’t do anything. It’s just proof you defeated the ultimate superboss.
Anyways here’s some advice for fighting 3D Culex: right at the start, he’ll use a fixed damaging meteor that sends your party’s HP down to 1. If you have Geno in your active party and you equip a feather onto him, or if you equip the attack scarf and super suit onto Mario, you can heal up before the 3D wind crystal uses petal blast. In easy mode, Culex has 8999HP while it’s 9999 in normal mode. Over time, Culex will be counting down to his ultimate attack. Once it hits 0, he’ll use 1 of 2 attacks. If there are still crystals on the field, he’ll use meteor again, only non fixed damage this time. If there are no crystals left, he’ll use final claw, which deals 9999 damage to one of your party members if not blocked. If you take out a crystal before Culex, it will boost a certain stat on the remaining enemies before dying. If you defeat Culex before taking out the crystals, they’ll drop their HP to 0 to revive him, meaning they’ll die afterwards. You’ll have to choose the best course of action here, defeating Culex once with all his stats boosted, or beating him twice with 0-3 stat boosts before death 1.
One thing to point out: so long as a character is at full health, the meteor attack will *never* kill them and instead leave them with exactly 1 HP. Anything below that, and your defense likely isn't high enough to survive it, so you'll die. The key then is to just have at least one party member at full health just before the attack (ideally all three). This is where the Healing Rainbow triple move (Mario+Peach+Mallow) can be really useful as it can also heal those dead in reserve.
His 3D design really reminds of Safer Sephiroth
It’s a shame that Culex doesn’t have tasty looking wings to cook into fried chicken wings and devour like the glorified KFC meal that is Safer Sephiroth. Would’ve loved to eat some special KFC. Instead, he looks like rock candy.
I wish games had these really cool secret bosses more often.

the original game was made by Square-Enix, so yes, just think how crazy people went back then when there was not internet to share this.
Also I love how they remade the ff4 theme for the fight. Its like "Oh you think that we remastered just the culex fight? Listen to this"

Kinda, he was made for this game but he's from a different universe probably a Final fantasy one. Mario rpg was developed by square enix so they added a boss that used the same style of sprites and music from the 2D Final fantasy games.

Games are usually finished like a month or two before launch dates, but that’s the amount of time they need to make a jillion copies. Otherwise, we’d all have to wait like one hour at a time to buy our copy.

Yea seems like Meteor damage is that character max hp minus one. Meaning you need full health to survive it without any help

@@mapmakerlich nah you can see later meteor deals like 216 damage while that character have 217 max hp and its hp not full. Its not set hp to 1, but deals max hp minus 1 damage, which is actually worse

This game won't be remade anytime soon. Maybe 30 years or more, but I'm sure they'll bring back this boss again.

My cousin walked in the room when I was doing this fight and he was flabbergasted to see Mario on the screen with Culex.
He bought the game straight after.
So did they give him more health because it looked like he just would not die
From what I’ve seen he can also disable action commands, I don’t know if that was in original but he can now

I did it in 13 turns at level 30 but I think there is room for a sub-10 for a speedrunner after some practice. fun fact: if you do not defeat any crystals before Culex 3D gets KOd the crystals destroys themselves to ressurect him at full health
I always made sure to destroy the crystals first just because their attacks were annoying, on top of Culex's attacks lol. When I first fought the 3D culex I honestly didn't know that would happen if you left the crystals intact. I just always got in the habit of going for the crystals first. My characters were all like level 26+ when I beat him but it took me 49 turns lol.

There is a turn 4 win and that run was kinda scuffed, people believes it may be possible to even do a 2 turn win xd.

what's more shocking is that this is the second fight the first time you fight him is his original sprite form but when you get the extra shiny stone and rematch him he gets a 3d model.

@@dannyemory6261he's also supposed to be 2D in the original, but its much harder to tell there because the international version cut anything revolving him being a 2D character in his dialogues, and at first glance he just looks like a detailed sprite like everything else in the game, but with proper 3D, now you don't even need the game to tell ya he's supposed to be a 2D being inside a 3D world

No. Seeing the game auto saves as you travel between rooms, it’s no longer possible. Yep, they nerfed that part. You also can’t do the star party switch either, where you could get party members to learn other party members’ moves instead of their own.
Thanks to this remake we had the fortune to hear a Squaresoft song remade by Nintendo!
Hit us with some final fantasy music right there.

It’s supposed to be a reference to oh Final Fantasy style boss, I believe. He was a optional Bossfight in the original game and since the original game was made by square, they threw in a final fantasy reference which included a Bossfight, battle music, and the main Final Fantasy theme during the cut scene.
Just a reference, but Culex never existed in any of the FF games.

So I fought original Culex after Smithy and now the door is gone. I had the Extra-Shiny stone since I thought it would be what I needed since Culex could've been upgraded to post-game secret boss. Now the door is gone and I didn't get to fight 3D Culex. Am I screwed?
