@@rolux4853 we don't really hate them. They are nice guitar. They used to rival Gibson's es-330. Today there is no way they are that good in quality. I've owned many Epiphones. They are great guitars. But they don't measure up to Gibsons, and price wise there are many brands that offer more value, like Gretsch

Great video as always. I have an Epi Casino & it can be a little muddy sounding, I would like to see the ES-330 up against a Casino Elitist or Gary Clark Jr versions that have the Gibson pickups in them, I think they would sound pretty close. I have also read that the metal vs the plastic covers can affect the tone.

The 330 looks beautiful, and beats the appearance of the Casino as expected. What I didn't expect, was that upper-register runs sounded a little thin on the Gibson- I preferred the Casino in that context. I don't know what a Bigsby does to tone, but at least in the case of these particular examples, I would prefer the Epiphone.

The VOS is a nice guitar for sure. I have a chinese Epi Casino goldtop which plays nice and really has that P90 growl. No shortage of treble either. Maybe the one you tested was a dud. I tried a few different Casinos before I settled on mine. Main difference; it was the most resonant of the lot unplugged and (as is usually the case) had the best tone plugged in. While the Casino in the clip lacked the clarity of the VOS, I wouldn't say it sounded 'bad'. There is a standard range ES 330 in the Gibson line this year which might have been a fairer comparison.

The deciding factor for me is always the feel. Not sure how everyone here is declaring 'victory' for one or the other without recognizing that component. I don't really know what it is, but i almost invariably prefer the necks of the higher-end instruments from Fender and Gibson. Fender US > MIM > Squier; Gibson > Epiphone. With exceptions, of course. I like 'blind' demo comparisons, when the reviewer gives a perspective on the feel of the guitar.

The Epiphone was slightly warmer Wich seems to be the main tonal difference between Epiphone and Gibson. Although the tone was VERY close, the Epiphone was warmer because the pickup covers we're metal and it effects the magnet field. The Gibson's plastic cover don't. That's why the Gibson is a little more clear. Semi hollows have a more similar sound with the same electronics

  • @Spidouz
    @Spidouz 6 років тому +16

Not better or worse, just different... as usual with two guitars. I generally like to roll the tone a little bit to warm it up... which is the same as the Epiphone tone. But if one like brighter tones, he can just turn the EQ a bit and he will get something close. As already said many times, the most impressive lately is the level of high quality we get from entry price guitars... I have a James Bay 1966 Century Epiphone (made in China), and it's an awesome guitar, not just for the price. I couldn't find any reason to buy another version of it, just because it would say "Gibson" on the headstock... If it sounds good, it's good!

I used to say I'd rather have four different 500.00 epis than one 2K gibson. But I don't really think that's totally fair, since I'd sure love to have four gibsons! The Casino is nothing to be ashamed of, that's for sure. The ES 330 has been revered since I started playing way back in the early 60's, and still is.

I have an Epi Casino and love the feel and sound of the guitar. The pickups are not that bad, it's the crappy covers that makes them muffled. I tested the guitar with and without covers and it's a world of difference. Just replace the covers with plastic ones and you're good to go. I also changed the magnets on the neck pickup to A2. Now i have a balanced output between the neck and bridge pickups and a mellower tone on the neck pickup which i prefer.

My experience was exactly the opposite. I recorded my 2013 Casino using direct out, then desoldered/removed the pickup covers, and recoded again. Almost imperceptible difference. The stock pickups are a bit hot, but they are fine, as is. Biggest complaints are cheesy selector switch, and overly soft fret wire. Buy this guitar for what it IS, not what you think it COULD be.

      @@UA-camHandlesAreMoronic Hello John
Your thoughts are intresting.. thank you
So you didn't find noticeable difference without covers?
Many people say that with plastic covers are different/
      Let's say dull/colourless
As well you said there is good idea to change the pickup selector?
      Only the selector?
      The other wiring?
Iam asking you couse I'm semi begginer and casino is my first quitar 💕💕
And is all stock..at the moment.. hhhaa 😊

@@dimitrisaivaliotis5616 Congratulations on having a Casino as a first guitar! To clarify my comments for you; Pickup covers CAN impact the sound of a pickup if they alter the electromagnetic field. The effect is generally agreed to be a VERY subtle diminishing of the upper frequencies, or, a softening of the "sparkle" of the sound. Chrome-plated brass is generally accepted to have the greatest impact, followed by nickel-plated brass, pure nickel, and plastic, in that order of decreasing impact. On current Chinese Casinos, the covers are Nickel-plated brass. Now, the internet is a wasteland of hyperbolic statements, and you can readily find examples of people who claim a "night-and-day" difference in the sound with vs. without covers. But, the truth is, the difference ranges from, "almost unnoticeable" to "non-existent." That's why I recorded the process (clean tones) for myself. It's less than the difference between Ernie Ball Regular Slinky and D'addario XL110 (and THAT'S tiny...) Seriously, don't even worry about it. As for the selector switch, if it works well, it's fine. It has zero bearing on tone. I don't like the stock switch because it's sloppy-feeling and is prone to rattling in the middle position. The fret wire is a bummer, though. It's relatively soft, and wears much faster than that on my Mexican, American, and Japanese guitars. Still, it's a good enough guitar that I would pay to have it refretted, if needed.

The tone from the neck and bridge pickups sounded great on both guitars, while the bridge was muddied by the dirt pedal, so I couldn't judge its tone.
Excellent playing, excellent taste and tone, especially on the neck and neck~bridge jams. That's the tone I want, but I'm considering the smaller ES-390, or more likely - Csino Coupe. Besides being smaller, the necks on them join the body at higher frets, making the high notes more accessible. The P-90 pickups combined with the hollow-body design is a great combination!

This is a good comparison because he doesn't say which guitar he is playing, he lets the guitars speak. It is true that in regards tone, it is a bit of a toss up with the Gibson a bit more polished on the clean sounds.

That Epi, to my ears sounds better. The Gibson bridge pup is pretty 'harsh' sounding. And I still can't bring myself to part with money for a 33X style guitar :-( Actually liking the Gretsch 33x style at the moment and great value for money. Just something a little different ;-)

All that slapping and popping, he should be playing a bass... why fingerstyle??? In reality, most guitar players use a pick... Love the channel Shane, but I will have to seek out another review of the Casino in which a pick is used..

The Gibson sounded good. But then again, that's what Gibson does - purposely puts the crappy pickups in their epi's (okay, not crappy - but different - some epi's I don't mind the pickups). Change the pickups out and I'm sure it will sound much better. Other than that, did you notice much difference with the weight, finish and setup between the two?
