    This song has become a true classic in French music culture. It was Nino Ferrer's major hit. Certainly a top in his career. I find this song timeless. It doesn't need any remix to match any period of time: the original version is just perfect & carries our minds & hearts away so easily. What holds my attention the most is the ethereal mesmerizing nostalgic atmosphere conveyed by the voice, the lyrics & the reverb effects on vocals.

    You chose a prophetic song Dereck!
    Here, I translated the song for the english speakers:
    C'est un endroit qui ressemble à la Louisiane
    -> It's place that looks like Louisiana
    À l'Italie
    -> Like Italia
    Il y a du linge étendu sur la terrasse
    -> There are clothes lying around on the terrace
    Et c'est joli
    -> An it's beautiful
    On dirait le Sud
    -> It looks like the south
    Le temps dure longtemps
    -> Time lasts a longtime
    Et la vie sûrement
    -> And surely life
    Plus d'un million d'années
    -> More than a million years
    Et toujours en été
    -> And always in summer
    Il y a plein d'enfants qui se roulent sur la pelouse
    -> There are many children rolling over on the lawn
    Il y a plein de chiens
    -> There are many dogs
    Il y a même un chat, une tortue, des poissons rouges
    -> There is even a cat, a turtle, golden fish
    Il ne manque rien
    -> Nothing is missing
    On dirait le Sud
    -> It looks like the south
    Le temps dure longtemps
    -> Time lasts a longtime
    Et la vie sûrement
    -> And surely life
    Plus d'un million d'années
    -> More than a million years
    Et toujours en été
    -> And always in summer
    Di-di, di-di, di-di, di-di
    Di-di, di-di, di-di, di-di
    Di-di, di-di, di-di, di-di
    Un jour ou l'autre il faudra qu'il y ait la guerre
    -> One day or another there must be war
    On le sait bien
    -> We already know it
    On n'aime pas ça, mais on ne sait pas quoi faire
    -> We don't like it but we don't know what to do
    On dit, "c'est le destin"
    -> We say, it's fate
    Tant pis pour le Sud
    -> Too bad for the south
    C'était pourtant bien
    -> It was really nice
    On aurait pu vivre
    -> We could have lived
    Plus d'un million d'années
    -> More than a million years
    Et toujours en été
    -> And always in summer

    He made also catchy comic songs such as "Mirza" or "Gaston y'a le téléfon qui son". Makes me think about "Tout va très bien madame la marquise" an old tragic/comic French song from 1935...

    This one is a classic, an unexpected one at the time since Nino was better known for humorous songs set to rocking rhythms, a bit like J. Dutronc. Try Mirza (also covered by Niagara), Les Cornichons, Ho hé hein bon, etc...
    It would be an ideal driving song if it wasn’t for the inherent sadness of the last verse: conflict did come to New Caledonia, his childhood home, eventually. It is still unresolved to this day.

    A beautiful song with this precise pen that immediately knows how to set a scene, an atmosphere, with just a few well-chosen words. It's the art of great authors to be capable of this feat. The music isn't to be outdone; timeless in its construction but daring arrangements. This title is now a classic in France.
    That's all for today, folks!

    This song got this special thing that make some of them timeless. The lyrics and the instrumental are somehow "saying" the same. I mean, you don't have to speak french to feel the indian summer surrounding and to smell the nostalgia in the air.
    Nino felt pretty unconfortable with Le Sud. At the end of his life, he said that he's been writing hundreds of songs but people will only remember 2 or 3 (including Le Sud).

    Such a beautiful and at the same time sad song by Nino Ferrer who was a very pessimistic guy who ended up taking his own life. Big jazz enthousiast, best known for funny (stupid ?) songs with always great instrumentations. Then he wrote "Le Sud" and "La Maison près de la fontaine", more serious. His life was very intersting, he nearly was a professional archeologist!

    Nino Ferrer is one of the greatest french composer of pop-rock music. He could do anything, and was the only french to compose and sing Rythm' and Blues songs : ua-cam.com/video/Uz0yvngSW-M/v-deo.html . But he could do also real rock music : ua-cam.com/video/CMD_EVAJy48/v-deo.html . And on the same LP he could wrote those two songs : ua-cam.com/video/ydWdoHvXWaA/v-deo.html&start_radio=1 - ua-cam.com/video/JCijtAyvgmg/v-deo.html . Too bad France didn't gave him the consideration he deserved as an artist.
