In USA, this clip was scored the 2nd most beautiful video clip in the world in the 80s
Seriously ? We don't know that. Or at least me and my friends didn't know that :).
@@garryiglesias4074 Agree, grew up in France and been living in the US for a long time and had no idea! Not surprising though
Fun fact, it was also the first French video clip to be aired on MTV
OMG, "Night cargo" at last! I thought that day would never come. Hooray for Dereck!
Derek, let me suggest you the french group "Telephone" with the single "un autre monde".
I've always loved the guitar riff at the beginning of the song; so catchy!
Hi from France, excellent choice !!! a very good song
Axel Bauer is an excellent musicien and songwriter... And his son follow the same way ☺️... À small anecdote, Axel's father was the voice of radio London during WWII...
Axel Bauer is a very talented artist. Multi-instrumentalist, warm voice, he has several albums to his credit but rare dazzling successes, that's really a shame (or not). I highly recommend his album "Personne n'est parfait", where unlike the title, everything is perfect, and especially the eponymous song. Obviously his duet with Zazie is extremely well done ("A ma place"). And then his live album "Ferber" is a real gem, with notably very successful covers of his golden hits "Cargo" and "Éteins la lumière". And then his magnificent and powerful cover of Christophe, "Les mots bleus"
Yes !! "Eteins la lumière" in the "Ferber" album is just... énorme !!!!
Finaly Dereck !!!
Axel Bauer is a great guitarist too.
Some people think that the solo is a synth sound but it actually is a guitar played by Axel himself.
He used to be a session musician.
The director, Jean Baptiste Mondino, realised few years later for Madonna, "open your heart", "justify my love", "don't tell me" and "Hollywood".
He also photographed Alain Bashung's "Roulette Russe" and Prince "Lovesexy" albums covers.
About his videos, his most impressive ones are Les Rita Mitsouko's "C'est comme ça", Jill Jones' "Mia Bocca" and Neneh Cherry's "Manchild".
If my souvenirs are good , Jean-Baptiste Mondino shooted Vanessa Paradis for the single " Tandem ".
Original + SEXY video !
Plus he got a Grammy Award for the video of The Boys of Summer by Don Henley
Dereck, let me suggest you Michel Polnareff, lettre à France. One of the most beautiful melody of french music.
By the way you're welcome here, you are so open minded and curious 😘
So dancy !!!! Big big hit 🔥what a pleasure for ears !!!
If I remember well, Madonna was so impressed with this video that she later worked with its director. 😉
I was 10 years old when came out and today at 50 still listening this great song ! Luv it
I've known this song for years and always liked it but after seing your reaction i said "I need to add this one to my playlist !"
Vidéo by Jean-Baptiste Mondino before Justify my love for Madonna
. . grave !
One of the finest French guitarists !!!!! 🎸🔆 All his stuff is great 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hello from Switzerland. This is one of my 1st record I bought and have at home until today, although I don't have a record player anymore.
Talking 80's in France there was the excellent rose lorens "Africa"
Asked for you to react to it for quite long time I think 😜
Yesterday , Africa was played on the channel France 3. Rose Laurens will keep immortal , on Internet !
HAhaha I'm french and it's a real pleasure to watch you discovering Axel Bauer !! I didn't went to your channel since a while and I'm glad to see that your follower are each time higher ! great job Dereck
A UFO song for French people in the mid of the 80ies (1984) but a huge success.
Musical video (by the famous Jean-Baptiste Mondino) = +/- Metropolis (Fritz Lang) x Querelle (Fassbinder).
Perfect song!
C'est un bijou cette musique! Great choice of french pop songs, Dereck! Keep up the good work.
Enfiiiiiiin!

Love this song, remember hearings/seeing the video loads when in France as a kid on holiday-and still as an adult!
My dad still has this on Cassette single, while we were in Nantes.
EXCELLENT !
So glad you had a chance to view this video. The naked woman is Sonia Dronier (she was the girlfriend of Bauer at the time and she had a career as a singer,
her stage name was Viktor Lazlo). Interesting anecdote about «Cargo de nuit», Bauer was doing a tv show in France and he heard a musician yelling about
the fact his guitar was missing. He made so much noise that Bauer went to see him to lent him one of his guitars. The musician was Roger Daltrey. This latter
saw the performance of Bauer on the show, loved the song and made an english version of it. You can look on YT for «Roger Daltrey - Take me home». In recent
years Bauer also did a nice version of his song, you can look for «Axel Bauer - Cargo | Live à Ferber | #1». Finally Bauer has a grown son who made his debut
on tv with the french version of «the voice». You can see Jim Bauer by searching for «James Brown - It's a Man's Man's Man's World | Jim Bauer | The Voice
France 2021 | Blinds...». Cheers!
Hi Dereck ! Great song, good analysis and good react 👍 You should try another title of Axel Bauer : “Eteins la lumière “, so good !
First french music video played on MTV.
I'm so happy you love this song !!!!
It's cool, I know all these songs well, but I hadn't necessarily seen all the clips at the time, your videos allow me to discover or rediscover some and see another aspect of these songs.
Thanks Dereck!
Oh yes, finally! Thanks so much for reacting to this French classic :)
The lyrics when it is the transition are "J'ai voulu tout chavirer" which means "I wanted to reverse it all" but with a nautic metaphore... Perfect.
yesss!! thanks cute american boy !! one of the best french song of the 80 !!!
J'adorais cette chanson...
Très bien. Your comments were pretty spot on. In this video Axel made me think about Robbie Williams
Anyway, at that time you could show "muscles" without being banned from TV, Facebook, Insta, and so on 😂 Mondino did a great job with this video. And this song is so hypnotic that you still remember it 40 years later.
One of the best songs ever!
I think you are finally ready to discover the great Michel Polnareff with music like: Goodbye Marylou, Lettre a France, Holidays . Its very very famous artist 💪💪
YEAH ! Finally ! Hahaha. It's the story of sailors, docking after days without seeing the "earth". They go to "Mario's" red light, to dive into smoke, sweat and sex. "The machine in the head" might be the obsession. And it really becomes a "machine in your head" (the chorus) once you hear it :).
The guy is an underrated musician and sadly have really do this one as a really out of the crowd track.
Best to you dude.
1984 boobis on french TV at day time. ANd everthing wa ok... First Black and White video clip. This is a piece of History by Jean Baptiste Mondino.
His style will be copied in all modern black and white creations. Great rythm guitar and Guitar Solos. Very original playing solos with no saturation at all. Wich is rare. 🙂
Seems like Roger Daltrey did a cover of the song under the title Take Me Home.
Best song (team Axel)
hi dereck , i love this song ..thanks
Another clip with beautiful men dancing: Serge Gainsbourg "Mon Légionnaire" (be careful, you have to watch the clip of Luc Besson, not the censored version).
Excellent song ! Wonderful guitar solo and Manu Kacthé on drums !
Hey so well seen about George Michael, I must admit I know this song by heart to have heard so many times since its outed in 80s and I'd never notice that ...Excellent! Analyse très pertinente. :)
Wow! The part with the naked woman was something, haha! If only we had that in the U.S. it would be fantastic, seriously, but Fox News would be completely out of control, hahaha!
Enfin ! ;)
Amazing Dereck! Si funny watching you discovering all of this.
What about a french well known rock band of these years called "Telephone", with their famous hits "Ça (c'est vraiment toi)" or "un autre monde" or "Cendrillon". These are really good stuff I promise.
Loved to see you react to this song!!! A. Bauer is a wonderful artist and this video was very cool and avant-garde. Still looks cool watching it 40 years later :D
I was so happy when I saw your "Derack Approvs" because I like so much this artist, nice composer singer and AWESOME guitar player. From him you could also check "Eteins la lumière" and a duet with another fantastic french artist Zazie with the song "A ma place".
I loved this video, when the song was out we could see it late (nude girl...) it explains the contrast between the life on a boat long time with a lot of men together, the desire, the fantasies. At this period, the "gay fashion" was everywhere, with all those bodybuilders, muscles, etc... with bands like Frankie goes to hollywood, maybe also to change the way we used to see gay men (before, when we thought about gay men, we could think men acting like girls, I know now in 2021 it seems weird but it's was like this).
The gay community loved so much this song, so Axel Bauer didn't talk immediatly about his sexuality, to stay ambiguous, in fact he's heterosexual, but he didn't want to disappoint the gay fans.
He still have a lot of fans, but we don't see him very often in show business, he prefers to stay far from glitters, and he's really great live.
Fun fact: the nude girl appearing in this clip is a french singer and actress named Viktor Lazlo.
Sorry for you, he wasn't gay! He had a child with the actress and female singer Nathalie Cardone!

Aaaaaaah yes 🙌 🙌 ❤️ Axel ❤️
And you haven't even listened to the end of the song. This is the short commercial version. The long version is even better, because there's a long instrumental section at the end.
Interesting from you to make a connection between "Cargo de nuit" and George Michael' songs, it really makes sense, but I never thought of it.
Axel has another crazy sexy song: "Phantasmes" you would like it I guess, I would probably rates his vinyls on my channel cause the visuals are great too...!
Please more Axel Bauer ! 👍
Hi Dereck, you should listen to the powerful duet of Axel Bauer and Zazie "À ma place". Zazie is also a very interesting artist by the way. Thanks for your videos !
Hi again Dereck. Iconic video and song from our beloved 80s... you should try another French song from a great band of that time: Les Negresses Vertes songs: (Zobi la mouche, Voilà l’été, la Bodega)
The remix replicant is stunning.
Please Dereck, could you react to :

Très bon choix. Une des chansons qui a le plus marqué mon enfance. Les sonorités orientales et la guitard sont restées ancrées en moi et ont influencé mes goûts musicaux. Il y a une super version live récente, également, et cela vaux le coup car Axel Bauer est un super guitariste. Cargo de Nuit 1984, bien avant les clips de Georges Mickael. Le clip est de Mondino, comme Tandem de Vanessa Paradis...
Very good choice. One of the songs that marked my childhood the most. The oriental sounds and the guitar have remained anchored in me and have influenced my musical tastes. There's a great recent live version, too, and it's worth it because Axel Bauer is a great guitarist.
Cargo de Nuit 1984, long before Georges Mickael's music videos
The clip is by Mondino, like Tandem by Vanessa Paradis ...
👍🏻❤️
I believe Axel Bauer is the guitar player here, if I'm right he was/is a studio session guitar player who was able to get out of that and create his own stuff.
"Eteins la lumière" is another of his hits and is also strong, dark, passionate.
You have to be commanded for being so open and interested.

Hello Dereck
I'm glad you like French music.
I would like to have your opinion on the songs of the group Telephone for example "un jour j'irai à New York avec toi" or "Cendrillon".
Thank you for all
The 1937 film Pépé le Moco that inspired Cargo de Nuit was also the inspiration for Looney Toon character Pepe le Pew, that mimics the mannerism of its lead actor Jean Gabin.
Hi Dereck ! Do you enjoy new wave and disco ? I propose the single " Manureva " by Alain Chamfort , 1979 . The lyrics written by Serge Gainsbourg talk about the boat Manureva. Alain Colar , the sailor of the Manureva , has literally disappeared in the ocean. What is really happened , in 1978 ? Where are you , Manureva ? It is a mystery !
The lyrics are about a sailor who's goes into a red light district. Sooo it's about more than "frustration"
It's more about the frustration of not doing things than the fun of doing them. In the song, just docked, he projects himself visiting soon the red district to reset his inner machine that make him go crazy. This perspective also makes him feel shamefull of what he is and what he is projecting to do. The song can apply to all sort of context of frustrations for things you have to do but will damage your soul at the same time 😪
He sang an amazing duet with the fantastic Zazie, called "À Ma Place"..
Yes, one of my favourite songs of all time !
