- This video introduces Regroove, an experimental drum sequencer device for Max for Live. Regroove generates and syncopates drum patterns using a neural net powered understanding of rhythm and groove.

To those asking, Regroove 2 has been temporarily deactivated due to issues with the latest Ableton version. We're currently working hard to resolve this and will have the device online again soon, keep an eye on our socials for updates!
It looks good! Your website is down by the way
Very cool. It would be even better if you could choose the velocity for every step/instrument, randomize and/or set a max/min value for velocities per step/instrument. Also if you could select the step length per instrument for some crazy polyrhythms.
totally awesome , thanks for this!!!! super easy to use and has that hardware feel and result "midi timing synced super tight to the computers clock like modular equipment not muddy or delayed due to constraints usually found when using software plugins"
Very well made and explained!
Great looking plugin. Some cool effects too. Id love to see a Polyrhythmic version of this where you can shorten each separate instrument anywhere between 1-16 steps.
Great idea, so essentially you'd like to see the option to set sequence length per instrument?
@@koil-music yes please 🙏🏻
@@koil-music in the setup that you made you can do that as you said, the device only send midi you can send this across different midi tracks
10 MONTHS LATER! I got the perfect Xmas present! thank you for a great device!
It would be great if you could save generated patterns in banks and presets, and allow those to be recalled during a live set for example.
Yea, indeed a great feature and one I'm hoping to build in when I find the time, glad to know someone else is interested in this
Dope, cool lil drum generator
Good Work. Keep going….✌️😎
great idea !
Nice one! What about swing? Also would be great to have an option/button to writedown the midi notes to a midi clip
You are reading my mind. I join this opinion - the ability to add swing is an integral part of any sequencer.
I guess the reasoning right now is that machine-learned expressive timing is going to be a super-charged version of swing with much more complex timing patterns than 1/16th or 1/8th swing - this will be released in the next version. Nonetheless I'll consider it, might lead to some wonky, drunken timing patterns
Live has the ability to record midi from one track to another already built-in, so this shouldn't need to be a separate feature of the plugin. Once recorded, you could then apply a groove to the new recorded MIDI track with the desired swing pattern.
So... one thing I am not quite getting about this device is why a new generated pattern only includes the bottom four rows? If I select some patterns in some of the upper rows, like hats and other percussive sounds besides bass and snare... they disappear when i regroove.. and then its just the 3 or 4 bottom rows?
Yea that's a great observation and a bit of a flaw of the ML model responsible for generating patterns. The top 5 rows are crash, ride, and the three toms respectively. These instruments simply aren't represented enough in the training data, with certain pattern configurations they do show up but very rarely. There are ways to resolve this when training the model, we're working on that for the next version of the device.
Can a drum rack be on the same chain after regroove like after a midi effect? I don't like to create a separate track for the drums.
It doesn't seem to work here on Ableton Live 11 (v11.0.11). It's set up correctly, but after drawing notes and initialising it via the Play button, it will only play back the notes generically and won't apply the syncopation or density changes.
Is it sufficient to drag the .amxd file into Ableton or do I have to install it in some special way?
It works as intended because this is intentional, however the expression feature is available in the next version! The next version is currently in closed beta but if you're interested in trying it out just reach out with an email to hello@koil.re
Hi @KOIL I've been trying to use this as shown above in Ableton 11.2.10 and I can program a beat, it plays but that's it. Leaving everything as default after intialising and setting as sync as above the regeneration button seems to do nothing. I'm on a mac mini M1 MacOS BigSur 11.6
Hi, unfortunately regroove 1 doesn’t work on M1 Mac. However, the regroove 2 beta version does. Pls write a msg to hello@koil.re if you’re interested in trying it out!
@@koil-music thanks for the reply. I will 🙂
bad ass
Hi. What's the status of the plugin v2 right now? the gumroad page says "This product is not currently for sale"
Do you plan to bring this back?
not available any more? Is there a way to get the m1 test version?
Try again, made some updates and broke some links in the progress, they're fixed now!
Why did you guys stop selling this product??? :(
What is the maximum pattern length (number of steps)?
The maximum length of a pattern is 16 steps, fixed to 16th notes.
Did you cancel this device?
doesn't seem to open on live 11.3.2, simply crashes when I drag it onto a track
june 2023
Regroove 1 or 2? also what OS are you on?
@@koil-music regroove 2 on mac os monterey on a m1 mac mini
Can you test on a clean project? If it doesn’t please send an email to hello@koil.re, we can provide support better there
Live crashes all the time when I try to load the plugin. Im on mac os 10.15.7 catalina ableton 11.1
Can you provide some more details, i.e.: What version of the device are you using? Does it crash Live or just freeze up for a few seconds? Does this happen when loading in the device or after using it for a bit?
@@koil-music hi. I’m using the latest version. It happens when I try in install it.
I drag it into an empty track and live crashes
same here, Mac OS 12.1 live 11.1.5. live crashes and closes when i drag regroove to an empty midi track
@Christian Llopis @monkeyscanmix Alright sorry to hear about the issues, will do some investigating and get back to you asap
@@koil-music yep same here ableton live standard 10.1.43. any solution to that issue?
Can you add Paypal as a checkoput option?
Where did you do that AI voice?
That's my voice 😅
I can't control the velocity of individual notes
Unfortunately that's not a feature the device currently supports, you can get more control over an individual instrument by entering detail mode when using Regroove 2
@@koil-music So does that mean I can't control the note-to-note velocity of a sequence I've written?
@@viniciusdefarias not in the device unfortunately. If u want that level of control I would suggest recording the midi into another track and editing them in the piano roll there
doesnt work at all unfortunately. is the free version outdated?
What OS and version are you using?
I see it's a cool plugin, but I can't download it. "This product is not currently for sale" 😐
Not woring brother....M1 Mac here...no random notes...some even dont play...sad would have been nice
Hi ! Is this device dead?
No, it's more alive than ever!
@@koil-music Yes I found it back on gumroad :) I don't know why I had an empty page. Cheers
Buzz word alert!! Aiajaj
Gets some positive detections on Virus Total (downloads fine though)
Its not working to download ...
We can try to help if you provide some more detail on the issue your having
9 bucks? take it easy
man, this thing doesnt do anything. ;/
sorry that you think that, can you elaborate?
@@koil-music I had a working version for some months (paid) and we had some email contact. then started to crash ableton.
what happened to regroove? this really has some potential. you could record midi drum variations for days, and quickly.
I hope you will pick this up again.
I’m not sure why the developer wouldn’t warn people they know it doesn’t work with m1 macs before purchasing.
👎🏻
Sorry to hear about your trouble, if you can provide a more detailed bug report at hello@koil.re then we can try to help. This has been tested on m1 mac so as far as we know it should work
