    This video is about MY favorite products MAC. This isn't a "products you need to own" video - buy what you want - or don't! Choose what's right for you and don't pay any attention to people who tell you that you MUST have ______. That's just silly. Lastly, all products here were purchased by me and if haven't mentioned something here doesn't mean I don't like it - this was just something fun to do so while you may take it as my honest opinion, its also just a bit of fun!

    This girl( who’s now 45 ) grew up in Toronto and saved up my pennies in high school and went to the original first Mac counter. When Estée Lauder bought them I cried. Why mess with perfection waahhhhh. I love my old pigments and I think they will outlast me.Great video Dustin

    I worked for MAC for a while a couple years ago and I can understand why people think the employees are rude and arrogant, the products themselves are great when used correctly and with the right amount but I just wish the company were a little more friendly.

      Meriam Usman Thank you for your comment! I agree - I actually had a tough time finding five products that I hated but finding 10 that I loved required hacking away at a much longer list! I was surprised myself by how many of their core products I kept writing down under the “favorites” column! 🤗😘🤗😘

      I have never had a bad experience when I go to MAC. Location obviously matters. But I've been to Macy's and the pro store and they have always been great. I feel more uncomfortable going to an Estee Lauder counter bc unless you to circus tricks, they never pay attention to you.

      watertownnative That’s awesome! Within the beauty community it used to be called, “macitude” and it’s fairly legendary - common enough that it coined a word anyway! Obviously it will vary from location to location and I think likely can be helped with a good manager - just like any job!

    There is a trick for studio eye gloss! It is very sticky indeed but if you put vaseline on top of it then its comfortable to wear and it doesn't crease for a while. I love it because with a regular gloss if I don't want a smudged look then I have to constantly fix it (like on a photoshoot). I just love a glossy eye!

    Great list of faves. I could listen to you talk for days. I really do think MAC has quality products. They just need to remarket themselves, fresh new marketing strategy on social media and customer service training for their makeup artists. As a POC MAC was one of the first brands that were inclusive and continued to build out their ranges when the demand was there. For that reason they hold a nostalgic place in my heart....Come on MAC we are rooting for you!

    Thanks for talking about MAC honestly. I worked for MAC for 7 years and I get and have heard all the criticism of the brand, product and employees. It’s almost become fashionable to diss MAC. I’ve never understood that because if we’re being honest MAC was the brand to beat for a long time. Other counters switched to all black and brush belts because of MAC. Indie brands based their products off of MAC products, MUG and Melt, to name a few.
    Where MAC stumbled in my opinion was arrogance and a failure to innovate fast enough. Simply put they didn’t see the dominance of indie brands, Sephora, and social media coming until it was too late. I love your list and I’ll just add one thing. I use chromacake dry with a short duo fiber on my cheeks. It leaves a soft veil of color and I then apply bronzer, blush, highlight on top. What the chromacake does is act as a primer that keeps all those cheek product in place like glue. No joke, it was a tip I picked up from a fellow artist and it’s a miracle for the oily among us

    I watched/listened on the way to work this morning! I am a long time Mac fan (like my first Mac lipstick was around $10...so you know that was a while ago), but they need to learn wow a new wave of customers. They have lack-luster limited editions(remember when new collections would have everyone in a frenzy?) and they seem to be living in the past with their product development and marketing. Mac needs to step up their game, because they are no longer the only game in town. Great video!!

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +6

      Gaptoothredheadedsinger It was around the time when everyone and their uncle had a liquid matte lipstick out and MAC had none that I remember just sort of looking at them like Coco Peru thinking, “Ooh honey... I told you so.” 😂 Then they missed the train on the highlighter game (even though they had MSFs they weren’t jumping on the trend fast enough with something new).
      MAC used to be THE fashion brand, always neck and neck with the latest trends. I think that too many lackluster limited edition collections, lack of product to support the demand for those collections and a reputation for shitty service at counters hurt them in the long run. MAC’s philosophy for customer service is like, “Its a privilege for you to be here.” Who wants that when Sephora is all but on their knees with the latest everything and a bottle of lube waiting to please you?!
      I think the bullet in MAC’s head (jeez what’s wrong with me and the graphic metaphors this morning?! LOL!) was the rise of social media; and entirely new marketing platform that ANY brand operating under the same old rules would suffer the wrath of. They just didn’t change and this train moves so fucking fast that if you don’t, by the time you realize what’s happened you’re so far in the rear view that everyone’s forgotten about you.
      WHEW! Holy shit that was a lot. I hope that made sense and wasn’t too “Anne Rice” with all the metaphors... I enjoyed her as a teenager but I’ve tried reading her as an adult and I’m like, “Woman get to the point already!!!” 😂🤣🤗😘😘😘🤗😘🤗😘

      FYI...I stumbled upon Lip Erase in my "collection", and I was like WTF do I have this? I sat and stared off into space for a few moments and remembered that for a while I was using it as an under eye concealer. It's wax based and it really locks moisture in and it doesn't get cracky and gross like a lot of concealers do. It's very low coverage. I had planed on experimenting with adding pigment to it and forgot about it. I originally got the idea to use it as concealer from Wayne Goss.

      Rebecca Shores SO much agreement here! 💯 Yes.

    • @m8272m
      @m8272m 6 років тому +2

      Ow. I'm makeup obsessed but still fairly new so I'm curious; what other benefits does hard press impart? For me, it's always meant difficult to blend, compared to the Anastasias and Loracs of the world who require the lightest touch and seem to offer the best blending. Change my mind, seriously, because I need to buy /more/ makeup. :)

    • @RebeccaShores
      @RebeccaShores 6 років тому +1

      The hard press gives your more control on how much product you’re picking up and where on your brush you’re picking up color. A lot of MAC shadows (well, at least the old formula I haven’t tried a lot of the new formula) were more of a buildable shadow than full on pigment in one swipe. Having a buildable color gives you a lot more options. You can blend it on a clean lid to impart just a bit of color (think sleepy, worn in smoky eyes), or layer it with other colors to create an effect similar to glazing in painting (think using a mustard tone of the lid and blending up and then a purple into the crease where it neutralizes on the yellow to create a shadow/crease color that is more interesting than just a brown/grey), and I like to mix colors on my brush (dip into two colors before application) and I get more control on how much color I am picking up of each color with a hard press. With softer presses you get a lot of product with just one light touch, and sometimes I don’t want a ton of product, especially for clean skin looks. With the current trends of everything is dialed up to 100, full on pigment is what people seem to want, but I’d personally rather see buildable color that is easier to create depth and subtle color changes. Mac Carbon is one of my favorite blacks even though it’s not the blackest black, since it is buildable I can mix it with other colors to darken them, and it can be applied with a light hand to create more of a sheer dark wash, or I can grab a lot of product and get a dark black when desired. With a super dark black all you get is the really dark pay off that will then be a pain to blend and you usually can’t get as subtle changes with your blackest black. Basically, I like hard press shadows since they are more versatile and the formula is more often buildable.

    We tend to forget about Mac because of the massive amount of new brands coming out of the woodwork. About two months ago I was bored at the airport so I went to a Mac store and got the Cream Color Base in Hush. Until then I only used powder highlights and was hoarding pretty much everything from Tom Ford to Estee Lauder, through ABH. That little cream pot completely changed my view and haven't stopped using it. I think it will be most probably the first makeup product (apart from mascaras and foundations) that I will be using up (already hit pan). Mac Face and Body is also something that I tend to go back to. I tried other - a lot more expensive - foundations of the same sort (lightweight, skin-like) but I did not find them better than the Face and Body. The one thing that I am on the hunt is to find a body highlight that is not glittery, just pearlescent and shiny - you know like the models' skin in ads (same effect than the Color Base on the face). I tried a lot of shimmery oils, the Natasha Denona body highlighter cream and powder, but they are not the look I am going for - the oil dries down and you are left with visible glitter particles. Now just wondering if that Reflex Transparent Gold mixed with moisturizer would do the trick. Any thoughts on this?

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +1

      dobcsek Reflects Transparent Gold IS glitter so it will absolutely give your skin a glittery, shimmering look. If you want something more like a glow or a dewy sheen look at things like Strobe Cream from MAC or other similar products. A metallic pigment mixed with body lotion would probably do the trick as well. I will sometimes use a powder highlighter on the body and then rub body moisturizer over it so I just get a nice shine. I think all metallic powders have even the smallest glitter particles in them so you’ll likely run into that with anything that’s not a clear gloss but the finer the glitter, the less noticeable the sparkle with be. Reflects Transparent Gold is BEAUTIFUL on the body though - it’s just glittery.

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +4

      Sidrah N Haha Thank you so much! The podcast is still an idea I’m working on! I hate talking about things too early but who cares, I’m not like Madonna with a new album dropping or anything LOL! I am currently working on: A 10 year anniversary video (or videos) for True Blood, a new Halloween video with Count Raven, Doris and Melba for Christmas (and cross fingers, hopefully something new sooner than that), finishing my next album, releasing a single from that ASAP with a music video, the Podcast, fragrance and maintaining the website/blog.
      Don’t take that list as me complaining because I enjoy all of those things! I just don’t often talk about what I’m working on for the future because I know I end up feeling like I’ve let the whole world down if I am unable to do it all because of time and budget and energy and planetary alignment and you name it.
      I’ve also been trying to figure out if something like Patreon would be helpful for me with all these creative ventures or if it’s just a bandwagon I want to avoid. I’ve never done anything like that because of... who knows why? Maybe my therapist can help with that LOL
      The short answer is, it’s still in the works, I have a lot of summer projects I’m working on with deadlines and that one is a little more open ended with a start date so it’s slower going. I’m glad you’re looking forward to it though! I am too! 🤗😘🤗😘🤗😘 Thank you!

      SmirkingValet It looks like it might just be called Reflects Gold. I see a “white” looking glitter called Reflects Gold and I am sure that’s probably it because it’s right by one called Reflects Pearl. I don’t know why some of them are “Reflects Transparent” and others are just “Reflects.” It could have always been called that, I may have just gotten the name wrong here.

    Ahhhnawstawzzia Beverly Hills 😂😂😂 love it!. Jure (Advisemystyle), AlyArt and you are the only 3 UA-cam channels I take seriously for the exact reason that you are true artists. I also love how buildable MAC shadows are. It seems that it's more popular these days to have really soft, heavily pigmented shadows (like ABH) and anything without that kind of heavy pigment is deemed lower quality, but I find it much easier to work with.
    Have you ever tried Viseart mattes? They're a stiffer formula with that buildable quality, they're so good.
    Also do I spy Stars n Rockets as the purple shadow with all the pan showing? Mine looks the same, I just love it so much. It's magical, especially for a purple love like me.

    BTW, another reason i like your videos is that you make one when you have something to say, not just because you need to keep them coming out at a steady clip, so I think you're quality stays very high. And I kind of appreciate that you're kind of a specialist - conentrating on MAC and Estee Lauder and such means I learn more about them and about how to use their stuff. So I was wondering, when you do buy from other companies, what's the think that makes you go for it? What qualities do you need to see in a product?

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому

      Rebecca White Thank you! Very much! I appreciate all of that!
      I think what leads me to try other products is honestly curiosity. It’s rarely hype - I’m sort of contrary by nature so if something is too hyped I’ll avoid it just because (it took me probably a decade or more before I watched Titanic just because I enjoyed telling people I hadn’t seen it LOL). I got into the Joan Collins makeup line because it sounded like fun. That’s usually my motivation for new purchases... what strikes my fancy and sounds like it would be fun to try!

    I swear by the MAC Blot Powder. I always have one in my bag, no matter what. The other MAC product I swear by is their Shape + Shade Brow Tint. It gives me the most natural, full, fluffy brow. I absolutely prefer a felt-tip brow pen over the waxy ones, I find felt tips much easier to control. But no one makes them anymore!

    You’re definitely a MAC scholar. Have you ever worked for them? When I originally started using some of their products, I did so more out of support for their gay friendly reputation. I still like a lot of their stuff but, to me, the company has lost a lot of its panache. I’ve never cared for their brushes so haven’t purchased any recently to give an opinion on any change. I do like most of their their powders-their blotting being perhaps the my favorite. Their eyeshadows are amazing. And I like their base and strobe creams. For some reason, I’ve never tried any of their contour products.... I miss your pastel hair. 😉

      Winn Carter Haha the hair changes frequently. Thank you though! I’ve never worked for MAC, I just enjoy research and I ask a lot of questions. I’ve never worked for any cosmetics brand in any capacity. In the late 90s out of high school I worked for a local computer company doing desk work (placing orders for repair parts, etc), beyond that my primary gig has always centered around visual art/graphic design/advertising type work. Illustration, etc.

      @DustinHunter  6 років тому

      Jessica Finnpers I don’t have a video like that - this is the closest I think I’ve ever come to a “best products to buy” type of video. I tend to shy away from them because I believe there are too many variables to consider to give a good recommendation that would suit everyone.

    • @msparker3500
      @msparker3500 6 років тому

      Ah to bad, I am trying to build up my collection but there are so many eyeshadows to chose from. Its kind of overwhelming, I know there are guides out there but I trust your opinion and that is always a good thing when you get review. Keep making fun videos and I will keep watching them. :D

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому

      Jessica Finnpers No bad at all! It’s totally overwhelming with the amount of colors. I think it depends a lot on things like: Do you like neutrals more or color more? Are you warmer or cooler toned? Where do you sit on mattes vs frosts vs glittery shades? Are you comfortable in your abilities or more of a novice? (Similarly, do you feel fine using a product that requires some finesse or would you prefer the easiest products to work with as possible?) Also of course, are these for you or for a pro kit? If they are for a pro kit it’s important to consider the makeup you’re doing as well (weddings are typically different than edgy editorial).
      Lots of questions! That’s why I don’t believe in “top ten lists” that are intended to apply to every person. They fill me with rage! Haha! There are too many variables to consider and just saying, “buy these” isn’t respecting the individual or considering their budget. I believe shopping guides are best when tailored to the individual.
      I just posted a review/swatch video with pretty much every eyeshadow that MAC makes, start there and look at the pictures. I’m happy to answer any questions as best I can or talk about it! I enjoy the discussion. 🤗😘

    It seems that Mac is cheapening the quality of their products but steadily increasing the price. Fix+ is fragrant water. That is all.

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +5

      dkcmusic I think everyone is doing that really... increasing price over time is normal (have you SEEN how much drug store makeup costs now?! WTF?! 🤭🤣 Seriously though!) and everyone wants to cut as many corners as possible to increase their profits. Maybe I’m being cynical but I just think it’s a fairly universal business practice for a lot of big companies.
      I don’t think Fix+ is BAD for you, I just think it’s dumb haha! And overpriced for what it is - I am so totally in support of someone loving it and using it though. I don’t care what you spend your money on - especially if it makes you happy. I only take issue with people who tell other people what they should be doing with their money.

    • @deathbeforedecaf7755
      @deathbeforedecaf7755 6 років тому +3

      TBH that's all any fixing spray is. Water and gylcerin. They aren't doing anything any other brand is doing.

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +2

      watertownnative I suppose it depends on what you consider a “fixing spray” to be - since it’s all sort of a made up thing anyway.
      Fix+ is essentially a modern toner in a spray bottle and while there’s nothing wrong with that, the name (“fix”) and the way it’s marketed to customers has led a lot of people to think it’s a “setting spray” that will make your makeup last longer if you use it - and it just won’t. That’s not what it does. It’s a skincare product. I don’t think of setting sprays as skincare but more like a special effects type of makeup product.
      For a toner there are better ones out there with more skin-loving ingredients than Fix+ and for a setting spray there are several options nowadays (outside of the classic “Aquanet”).
      Like I said though, you can like whatever you want! If someone loves Fix+ out there then that’s awesome! We don’t all need to be the same or think the same way about things. Different is groovy!

    • @dkcmusic
      @dkcmusic 6 років тому +1

      From a business standpoint, I get it. But MAC had a reputation for quality. When they switched out their brushes to synthetic and kept the same price point, It just didn’t make sense. They is so much competition... its like why doesn’t MAC want to be great anymore 😩😩😩😂

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +2

      dkcmusic Being a music nerd it’s difficult for me to not draw comparisons to how the music industry reacted to file sharing when that was a big issue (pre-iTunes).
      Big record labels shot themselves in the foot when they reacted to things like Napster like a parent scolding a child. Instead of seeing the changing trend and creating something (like iTunes) for their customers they killed the single by raising the prices, trying to force people into buying full-length albums and yelled at everyone who rebelled. This at a time when the public was becoming aware of how artists were being treated by the labels via a few vocal folks like TLC and Prince.
      Consumers speak with their dollars and I think people collectively thumbed their nose at the industry.
      MAC will do what they do - as will any large brand - what they’ve always done for as long as it still works. I think it’s too hard to turn a moving train that big that’s going that fast - they will learn their mistakes and figure out what they should have done in hindsight.

      Caroline Elven Skillebekk Thank you! I’ve been uploading a lot for the past several months. Will you tell me if you’ve seen those videos? I don’t care if you don’t watch them but the “I’ve missed you” makes me wonder if they aren’t showing up in your feed. UA-cam doesn’t favor me haha so I get people saying things like, “I haven’t seen you in two years! Where have you been?” Do you check the channel for content or rely on UA-cam’s subscription feed?

    I must have been watching youtube beauty videos for a long time bc I remember when beauty gurus would post videos like "Mac Starter Kits," and there was a tag question I think that was like "if you could only shop at Sephora or MAC which would you pick" and it was a hard question at the time! I think now most people would say Sephora and not even blink. It really was the bombardment of mediocre collections that pushed Mac to the back burner. I love Mac, Face and Body is the only foundation I use, but I have more than one Mac product in my collection that's just...ok. And they're kind of expensive to risk buying something and it just being ok.

      Funny but I rather go to MAC or Ulta. Their reward systems suck. Aside from maybe Fenty, there isn't anything I must get at Sephora. MAC has 25% off a lot of times and Ulta had 20% a lot but Sephora has lame point perks, their weekly wows haven't impressed and their VIB sale sucks by comparison. I guess I've liked MAC more and more now that they aren't so overly hyped lol

    • @samantha.irenes
      @samantha.irenes 6 років тому

      I agree, Sephora's VIB system sucks. I got the Rouge reward one year and I was like "...this is it?" It was like a dinky brush. I honestly forget about Ulta because I don't have one near me!

      You rack up points fairly quick and recently I saved up 2000 pts from the holiday season. Bought $200 worth of eyeshadow palettes. I'm doing most of my shopping at Ulta now so I can rack up points and use to buy more makeup lol. MAC, Ulta and Sephora are all an hour from me. I know some people have had issues with shipping w Ulta. I haven't. I've contacted them about their crappy birthday gift and they sent me $20 gift card. Ulta aims to please imo.

    I loooovee my MAC eyeshadow collection, MAC lipsticks and lip liners :) I'm salivating looking at that eyeshadow collection! I want alll da swatches. I SO agree about the hard press resulting in buildable and long lasting pigmentation! that's why I hate makeup geek, I find they do not last well or build or blend well really, especially on darker skin...it's all MAC and Anastasia for neutral eyeshadows and indies like Sydney Grace maybe a little Colour Pop otherwise. I snorted when you said ~in my opinion~

    Wow, I really love Fix+! It's the only MAC product I've gone through multiples of. It just makes my makeup melt into my skin and look so much more natural, without altering the staying power of my foundation. I'd love to know how you get the top off to refill it. I didn't think it was possible. I found this video very interesting. It's always great to know which products actual makeup artist swear by.

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +1

      Lorna Kelso Thanks! It’s actually not hard to get the top off but there’s a trick to it. Screw the top off and you’ll see a “plug” with the plastic straw thingy stuck in it. That part doesn’t come out of the bottle by just unscrewing it. You have to unscrew the black cap most of the way and then tilt the cap to the side to “catch” the plug thingy, popping it off. It’ll screw right back into place but sometimes it takes a try or two because it’s such a funky spray mechanism.

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +1

      Lorna Kelso Also you’re totally welcome to love Fix+! It’s not a bad product for what you’re using it for. If you have time look through the comments here because I’ve typed a lot of information in response to people already talking about alternatives, what I use and why I - personally - don’t like it (it’s not because it’s a terrible product).

      Ulises Aguilar Orizaga LOL! You’ve got to watch the video I talked about (and included a link of in the description) OR read through the comments. Plenty of options there - although just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s bad. It just means I don’t like it. You can use ALL the Fix+ if you want! 😁

    I occasionally treat myself to fix plus just for the smell 😉 Have you tried the mario badescu sprays- they are a great cheaper alternative- or just water, I know😏. I’m impressed with your Mac collection that you showed more of in an earlier video, would love to see you do some looks with your favorite items. I love a trip down memory lane- I think my first Mac items was Spanish fly lipstick, also there was a gray-purple shimmery lipgloss I can’t remember the name of, and much more I’m forgetting in my old age. Also a Virgo btw;) ❤️you Dustin!

      AUD MAC Haha I can’t remember a lot of the names. I’ve also noticed lately that when I try to read the name of a lipstick I have to hold it REALLY FAR from my face to see it 🤭🤣
      I haven’t tried those sprays. I would check them out just for fun. Fix+ has a great smell. What do you think it smells like?

    Great tutorial, Dustin. I wouldn't dare fall asleep on u b/c I wz waiting 2 c if u wd work that pigment into the tutorial. So thnx 4 that. Zabrena mentioned mixing pigment into foundation , I've never seen anybody actually demo it. I have my pigment & my foundation. I just don't know how much 2 use. I certainly don't want 2 waste any product. Any tips anyone?

      Charlene Eatmon I’m still working that out for you, I’ll post it in a GRWM style video when I do it. Do you have a particular pigment you are wanting to mix with it or do you have several?

    • @JustSheilz
      @JustSheilz 6 років тому +1

      The Next to Nothing is decent. They discontinued the Select Sheer which is what I used to use before.

    • @DustinHunter
      @DustinHunter  6 років тому +1

      I agree (obviously if you can’t tell haha), I like Next to Nothing as well. My first thought when I read your comment was, “What do you not like about Studio Fix Powder?” Not that it must be the best for you but - does it work for you and if so what would you rather it be like? If it doesn’t work then what does it do that you don’t like?

    • @GlossGalore
      @GlossGalore 6 років тому +2

      Luna Oily Girl butting in here - I can’t beat Studio Fix as I find it too heavy, but I carry Blot powder with me at all times and it’s great for taking shine away.

    • @marvinlouiseluna
      @marvinlouiseluna 6 років тому

      Dustin Hunter studio fix seemed to be heavy on my skin for a "daily powder." I just like it how it sets my makeup. But for retouches I ended up looking cakey and so madeup. Like my skin is trapped haha if that makes sense. I need to know which powder I can use daily and/or could work as a "retouch powder" without that overdone effect.

    • @marvinlouiseluna
      @marvinlouiseluna 6 років тому

    I think the best part of MAC is their permanent range. If you only explore MAC where their LE is concerned, you'll be disappointed. Not saying all of their permanent products are worth it (or there's never a LE worth buying), but where they are best is in the permanent range imo. I'm not an artist but no one can tell me that MAC doesn't make good blush, eyeshadow, foundation or lipsticks. Nope won't hear it!
