Broken 1800's Marble Grave Marker Restoration

- A lot of us started doing things differently during the Coronavirus pandemic. I started learning more about my genealogy. I found out that I still own some of my third great grandfathers property that he had owned most likely since the 1860's, or even possibly earlier. I knew that it had belonged to my great grandmother. But I'd not thought about where it may have come from before her.
I found that his grave marker was broken and almost completely covered by dirt and grass. At the same point, I met up with some others who share a passion for grave marker restoration. Follow along with us as we learn how to repair, replace, and to the best of our abilities restore a broken 1800's era marble grave marker at Neely's Creek ARP church in Rock Hill, SC.
Thanks to everyone who helped out during this process and there were many who did!
Thanks to Brandyn who reached out to Jonathan Appell at Atlas Preservation to assist us with a game plan for getting this stone back in it's base and upright for the first time in who knows how many years and thanks to Jonathan who took his phone call personally to help him develop a plan.

My favorite video yet! What a great project :)
It’s been fun one to work on both in the field and in the editing room!
You know what I liked about this? That you all didn’t get all wordy and rambling. I’ve had to quit another channel that did that because I come to see the actual work. Thank you all so much. I’ve subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing!
I've quit a number of UA-camrs because they were way too talky and rambling! Too many UA-camrs don't seem to realize that many folks don't want to hear all the unnecessary dialogue. I'm not putting them down, but they just don't seem to get it. So, you are not alone!
More content like this please, nice work!
Thank you!
Fantastic video... I spoke to my cousin who is in the monument business. He watched your video and thought you did a fantastic repair job. He told me a monument company could possibly have fused so scrap for the . That would be very expensive since it would be sent to a fabrication / quary .
He did say you could apply some water proofing to the stone after the repair to prevent further damage from water/ moisture.
Excellent restoration job... God bless 🙏
About 50 years ago a church took down one my GGGG grandmothers gravestone . Because it was now laying on its back, most of the inscription has now weathered away . There were three internments in the same grave , the two younger ones were children ( great great great uncle and aunt ) who died young . Its good to see someone standing a marker back up again before it fades away .
Laying them down has got to be one of the worst decisions.
I am not literally a religious one but God bless you for your efforts. I guess it was not a cheap action....endless respect
Thanks I appreciate the comment!
Beautiful job, a few things I would have done differently. But the ending would still be the same. Amazing job well done.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!
Great job guys! I share your passion, and I have learned a lot from this. Thank you for sharing, and please keep doing what you are doing.
Appreciate the compliment! We have been continuing this work. I plan to have another video out about this in the next couple of months.
Great restoration.... Thank you for doing these restorations. God bless 🙏
Love to watch these kinds of videos. They just show everyone matters. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for your comment. There’s no way we could have left it in the condition it was in once we discovered it.
Nice repair. Personally, I would be scared to attempt that. Not that I don't think I could do it but rather I would be afraid to damage it more. Right now I'm sticking to cleaning veteran's headstones and grave markers.
Thank you for the kind words. Good on you for taking the time to clean the veterans stones. It’s very fulfilling and awesome to see the progress from beginning to end on the cleaning of stones as well.
That's a great job. Well done. Every time i visit the graves of ĺoved ones and friends I always clean up a couple of old graves. I keep some simple tools in my car for stripping undergrowth off gravestones and water, soft brushes and cloths to clean them where possible. No matter how old the gravestones, the dead are never forgotten as long as somebody stops for a moment speaks their names.
Thank you for the compliment. I agree with your sentiments exactly. We should do our best to keep these grave markers in as good as shape as possible.
How true.
Great job everyone
Thank you!
My family has a cousin in the monument business. He's a perfectionist....... Your absolutely as good as my cousin.... I don't think he's ever restored a monument that has had so much damage.
There's very few people who know the restoration process as your team. Fantastic job restoring these memorial markers. God bless 🙏
I really appreciate that. This stone was in really bad shape. No telling how long it had been broken. I really wish I could have gotten to it sooner. But hopefully this repair will hold up for many years.
Your welcome, not being critical of other's but they don't have the knowledge or disciple.
I sent your video to my cousin.... I'm sure he'll be impressed. Definitely a fantastic restoration job. Nice to see respectful people who do such humble work. 🙏
Great job. I have fixed several headstones in an old cemetery here in my town that go back to the e17 hundreds. D2 is great product and I highly recommend Bonstone's epoxy adhesives. I repaired the stones about 4 years ago and they are still in great condition.
Thank you for the comment and the compliment. We’ve repaired a bunch more since this one and still have a bunch more on our radar. I plan to have another video out in the next few weeks time permitting. Again thanks!
Great job
Thanks!
Excellent job!
Thank you! It was a fun project that I learned a lot from.
Good job!
Thanks dude!
Nice job guy's
I appreciate the comment. This project was one that took quite a few days and was very rewarding. We've since done several more of these types of repairs.
The next time you do this type of repair work, when you trim off any excess stone...... Save it for later. Grind it up into a finer granular powder, and mix it with a clear epoxy to form a patching compound to cosmetically repair any remaining cracks. That will minimize any color or texture discontinuity.
Good tip! Thanks!
Any follow up on how it looks after the D2?
It’s definitely whiter, parts of it are still difficult to read. I’ll take a current picture and put it in a social post.
@@walkerswildWhere would I find the social post?
I just reposted with your handle as a mention. You should have a notification. @@kimberlyhansen6378
Thank you!
Nice work; Obligatory Liked and Sub’d 👍▶️
Many thanks! Thanks for the sub!
What did his marker have to say about him?
This is the best I could do with reading it:
WILLIAM WYLIE.
BORN
Sept. 19, 1811
DIED
Feb. 2, 1889
We miss thee from … ….. ….
We miss thee from thy place.
A shadow ore our time is cast.
We miss thy smiling face.
Just wondering if adhering the top and bottom pieces together while it was in your shop wouldn’t have been a better option. But good job nonetheless the less.
We debated that, but the bottom piece was really bowed from being on the ground for so many years, that we figured we’d have to compensate on the top to make it more straight and level. But in a perfect world that would have been the best choice.
I've restored several tablets and the only comment I have is that conservators understand that stones "breathe" and want to leave gaps in the epoxy so moisture can move up and down.
@bryanmcintyre-nf4bt Absolutely a great comment. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
