  • Sue and I spent time this summer volunteering at a local historic Cemetery. It started out simply enough. We thought if we could get the fallen grave stones out of the way, we could reduce the 10+ hours it takes to mow and weed-wack the Cemetery. Well sixty plus stones later and we are engrossed by all the history and mysteries of the Cemetery. Luckily my friend Robert lent us his small Kubota Backhoe for several months. It's made it much easier to lift, move, dig, and reset stones. We have advanced on to cleaning stones. The moss, mold, and pollution has made it hard to read many old stones. After speaking to several experts, we are now repairing some of the broken stones. A local Scout did his Eagle Project on photographing and recording the Cemetery in Find-A-Grave. It has been a rewarding experience! I would definitely suggest helping out your local Cemeteries by volunteering.

Thanks for posting this, and thanks for your selfless work. I'll be going on my first excursion to clean up a cemetery and help repair some of the stones.

Theres a very old cemetery with broken old head stones and was even a grave that had fallen in so Deep you could have fallen into it. It hurt me because he was a veteran. What wonderful work you and your lovely wife have done in this Vischer Ferry Cemetery.. Plus a huge surprise to see that your were working on Dr. Henry C Cooper's stone. He is my 1st Cousin 4 X removed. My mother was a Cooper and I have a long history of the Cooper/Kupfer's that came from towns in Germany . I have that Johan Martinus KUPFER was the first one arriving in New York and dying in 1738 in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York, USA.

It would be interesting to know more about his medical practice in Clifton Park, NY. I wish the family monument was more readable. I did find, clean and reset monument stones that say "father" and "mother". I presume they are for Dr. Cooper and hist second wife.

@@SerendipitySue I emailed to your husband about each of my family members yesterday and listed who they were. I don't know what happened to all that work. I will try to redo it tomorrow for you all. Stu
