    I'm so glad you like it!! It's too easy to do, and I'd rather see quilters and sewing enthusiasts *comfortable* than try to get rich from it. It's comments like yours that are all the payment I want :) I hope you try it out for yourself and love it as much as I do, Marguerita

    Sweet! I used to have 2 studio spaces (lucky me!) and now I live in an RV. But I still have my table and foam :) If I ever package it, I would sell pre-cut blocks, like large lego blocks, of foam. But so much depends on the height of each person's sewing machine bed... I am beginning to travel around the country to quilt shows, showing quilts and selling my books, but I'm also going to show off my table innovations wherever I go. I love seeing the look on people's faces when they see it!

    Thanks for this great tutorial!! My hubby is cutting the foam while I type. I'm a new sew-ist and I'm quilting my first quilt. I am disabled with right side weakness so this table allows me to be comfortable! This is a perfect design for me! I wish quilting on my machine would be this easy! ;). I know....practice, practice, practice! Thanks again!! :)

    Thank you so much Marguerita. After seeing your video I went out and bought that materials and am so thrilled with it. My sister was so impressed and couple days after I made mine, I made one for her. We can't thank you enough.

    THANK YOU MARGUERITA, thank you for sharing your idea. I saw this video about a year ago and decided to do it. My table has been WONDERFUL. It's longer than the one shown on the video but I was still able to use one styrofoam. I have a decorative vinyl tablecloth on top which hides the foam. No more shoulder pain. Thank you again, Marguerita :)

    Thanks so much for making the Amazon booklet available to make a DIY sewing machine extension table and generally organize a sewing area. My new Singer 9985 arrives on Sunday as a preset from the kid still in me to the current 71 year old who still loves to sew.
    Incidentally I have all your Amazon books and love them. Thanks for the great work you do and the joy you share with others.

What a great treat for yourself :) Thank you for your kind words about my books - I just finished one on using layer cakes and I'm starting another one - I just keep coming up with ideas :) I hope we get to meet someday - I'm doing a lot more traveling now in the RV in the winters.

      Well how wonderful. I'm deep into doing my quilting application in apparel sewing. Please do a book on how to make use of quilting techniques into making clothing where everything doesn't have log cabin blocks on jackets and such. What's out there now is a bit too homespun and "homemade" looking for what most people are looking for these day.
      Color blocking, string piecing, bargello, paper piecing, foundation piecing, free style quilting techniques, decorative stitching would all be so welcome to sewers today who love to quilt but already have too many quilts in their closets and would like to branch out in apparel.
      Also, I suspect you care about people a lot so maybe you can engender quilters out there to make quilted items for nursing home patients, shelters, group homes. That would make such a great series of videos.
      Ha. Don't you just love it when your subscribers try to organize your life! :)

      I DO love it! We think along very similar lines, believe me. My friend Penny is a garment seamstress and I want her to help me with some quilted clothing. I haven't sewn garments in over 35 years. I'd love to do our "crazy cuts" with decorative stitches on big panels, then cut them to make a vest or jacket.
      I know quite a few people who are targeting their quilt giving toward nursing homes but my pet project is a breast cancer fundraiser that I'm working on with a local quilt shop owner and some friends. My daughter's and my donations have gone to CASA for many, many years. CASA is the Court Appointed Special Advocate program for children in foster homes. Their annual quilt auction in Anchorage is a big event :)

      Well, once again, how wonderful. My contribution to a few of the pages or video photos are related to being a newly retired Chemist who misses mixing colorful liquids together so I'm gearing up to develop easy, inexpensive, and safe ways to make beautifully dyed fabric for quilting and apparel projects. Many people can't afford the high price tag of batik fabrics and it's surprising how easy it is to do so that the dyeing is permanent and spectacularly beautiful. I have 4 volunteer helpers, Magdalene, Rosary, Zoe, and Gabriel, my 4 dachshunds who are so nosy that they MUST be involved in everything.

      I have done some fabric dying in the past. I really look forward to seeing your ideas! Are you going to do videos, classes, a website, or book? I just came across some of my best pima cotton yardage, which I really loved for dying. I also love drawing on fabrics with crayons and markers. It's my dream to create art quilts ;)

    It a beautiful, multi-use approach. Alternatively, since your foam pieces are like a Lego assembly, you could just push the machine away from you, foam and all, lay an additional piece of rectangular foam, the with of your choice, in front of it. Then just drape the plastic over it The table stays evenly blue, and your machine cutouts remain perfectly in place

    That is genious! I have a small side table I think I'm gonna attach two flat pieces of wood on either side and put the latches. Might be cheaper than the foam. Those foams are pretty exspensive. plus the plastic table.u thought how to make something around my sewing machine this would be a great idea.

  • @Marguerita
    @Marguerita  15 років тому +2

    It is a bit of a stretch for me, but I don't do it often, just to finish up a large quilt :) Instead of flipping yours and using the same opening, you can flip it sideways (kitty corner) and create a *new* opening that is better fitted to you for "big quilt handling" . When you cut the foam out for any opening you can always just shove it back in and put the vinyl over it, so you can really make a cut in every corner and then use whatever one works best! Marguerita :)

  • @Marguerita
    @Marguerita  11 років тому

    Hi Elaine, the trick to getting the foam to stay put is buying the thickest vinyl for a covering and let it drape over the sides by several inches. That creates strong corners and holds the foam in place. If you still find that the foam still moves, buy some "shelf liner" at one of the big box stores and put it under the foam - it works wonders. I even use it under my cutting mat :) Thank you for your message - I needed a cheerful note today!! :) Happy quilting, Marguerita

    I love love love this idea! I have a custom sized SewSteady acrylic table that fits my Bernina 770QE sewing machine already so I will only need to cut a square opening that fits the SewSteady table. A separate cut to accommodate by front load bobbin area. I have been planning on making a design wall with styrofoam so now will do both! Can’t wait to try this very economical option.

    Hi Crochet, you bring up a very good idea because the foam is not always available (and NOT as cheap as it used to be either!) so it's great to have alternatives. The "L" shape is a dream configuration and I was just quilting a *small* quilt and wishing I had an "L". When I have to quilt my next BIG quilt, I will build myself an 'L'. Thanks so very much for your note - I wish you all the best in quilting! Marguerita :)

    Aloha Jozee, if you are talking about the stuff made of white beads, yes you can use it but it creates a huge mess and it's best to seal the ends after they are cut because they just keep shedding those little white balls of foam forever. Tape, glue or maybe even modpodge might be good to seal the ends. Thanks for watching and asking! ~M

    I only cut out a small square around the feed dogs, and tape that down. The vinyl goes through the throat space and is cut to fit around the motor part of the sewing machine. I hope that makes sense. Don't cover up your sewing machine's heat vents though, with foam or vinyl.

    Thank you so much for your help and idea. I went out and bought fibre glass insulation which has outer covering of shiny slippery silver foil. I followed your instructions, the only addition was l has to use sticky back clear plastic on the edges as they were rough and dragged on material. I wish l could show you a picture.
    I'm so thrilled. In Sterling pounds it cost me £13.00, definitely under $20.00.

    @Imbz48 Hi, the sewing machine that you see in this video is a Bernina 180. It is over 10 years old. I also use an old Kenmore (1970's) and an even older mechanical Bernina Record 720. All of my machines are second hand, usually bought on craigslist. Each machine has its own set of foam and vinyl :)

    This is great! I was going to cut some acrylic sheeting and screw it to wood blocks. However, I have two different sewing machines, it's expensive for a thick enough piece of acrylic sheeting and a pain to cut without screwing it up.
    I just happen to have vinyl and some sheet styrofoam board already. I can add in a layer of some recyled packing blocks of styrofoam to get the height just right.

    • @Marguerita
      @Marguerita  6 років тому

    Hi Garlene, Did you put vinyl over the foam? The vinyl is what makes the fabrics glide so nicely!! You can find it at most WalMarts that sell fabric and at JoAnns Fabrics. It's on a roll or just standing up rolled and you should buy the very thickest that they sell. It's not expensive and for one table, one yard should be more than enough. That's just $5 or so. It makes all the difference in the world :) ~Marguerita

    @sikkepossu Hi, quilting is layering two fabrics and some batting (also called stuffing or wadding) and sewing the three layers together. It's also sometimes called making a comforter or blanket. In the USA it is a very big past-time or hobby with women, to make very decorative quilts. There are LOTS of videos about making quilts on UA-cam :)

    Hmm, that is an interesting question! I think that you would want your foam table to be the same height as the back/rear height of your sewing machine bed once it is on the door stops. Does that make sense? Then, when you put the vinyl on, you can still tape it to the area around your feed dogs and let it slope down to the foam - - so your machine would be slightly higher than the surrounding foam bed table. You could add more bits of foam/cardboard to build up in front of the machine? MM

  • @Marguerita
    @Marguerita  11 років тому

    The foil-faced foam is usually white bead foam and I don't like that stuff - it breaks down too easily and I've had that white pellet mess everywhere in the house. BUT if that's all you can get, try sealing the edges after it is cut. The foil adds a lot to the cost, also. The blue (and sometimes (new) purple) foam is called "rigid foam insulation" and if they can special order the foil stuff, maybe they can special order the plain foam instead. ~M

    Just to continue on the table idea. If you didn't mind the top being heavy, solid core doors are always in abundance @ Habitat "re-stores" & other 2nd hand building material locations (for a table top). Hollow-core doors are much lighter in weight, and the most standard size is 30" x 6'-8" (std. door height). Some may not like the door handle hole, but think of how you could use that. Set a cup down in it for tools, scissors, pencils, seam ripper. (Only when sewing, not large quilting).

Personally, if I'd have found the legs first, I'd probably prefer them because my heavy machines dent the plastic tables after a while. Marguerita

    i love this idea also BUT does the foam shift on the table? i have a 40" X 60" table my hubby built for me but it has no recess for the machine and when i quilt my projects it is a pain. this would work so i can also use my table for other tasks such as cutting and pinning.. no holes to fill up.. just move my machine, remove the foam and away i go. but does the foam shift around? and yes i agree.. u came up with the idea.. refine it and market it.. I will be going this route now as a beginner. I am a older guy looking to learn this craft. I have been trying to figure out a table set up to put in my cellar. My wife doesn't want me sewing anywhere upstairs, imagine that? So I have limited area in the cellar and I will have to do without a computer also down there, which is the worst part of it all(I guess). Wifey might miss me tho...lol, key word here is 'might'. I am determined to learn this skill. I have a brand new Brother CS5055PRW machine right here in the box. I also bought some other supplies too. I am going it pretty much alone.

      +dontswin Get good lighting. I like the new LED "flourescent style" lights at Costco. Invest in an adjustable height chair - us craigslist. Find a copy of the book "Your First Quilt Book - Or It Should Be!" on ebay or your library - it's the best. Don't believe every vid you watch on YT ;) Read the owner's manual and buy good thread - it's worth it. Start on a small and easy project first so you learn your machine without getting frustrated. Let me know how you do, ok?

      That's really nice of you to respond so quick. I did buy the Generic Bluecell 39 assorted color(200yds.ea.) pack off amazon and just a practice roll from Walmart. The pack seemed very popular so I bought that, I will probably never use it all in my lifetime I ventured into Jo Anns a few weeks back and was very overwhelmed by everything. But I got some stuff really cheap like batting. I am just starting out. Wife thinks I'm losing it. I understand that this is a long tedious learning process. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the tips!

    Hi, I move the material when I am stippling, and don't worry about your quilting - just do it :) "Done" is always better than "perfect" in my world!! No no one ever examines the quilting anyway! I have a video of me stippling - it's called Machine Quilting Penny's Quilt. I drop the feed dogs, wear my favorite quilting gloves and just stitch away :) Relax and keep saying "this is going to be finished soon.." and before you know it you are done :)

    @coloradomom43 The table that I use measures 2' by 4' and when I am quilting a large quilt, I put two tables together, giving me 4 square feet. Thank you for watching! I hope you'll check out my other videos and become a subscriber ;)

    H Erica, you can find the foam in home improvement stores like Lowe's and Home Depot, or your local building supply store. ~M

    SWEET!! If you need help, email me. And the book is on Amazon for Kindle cheap if you need it (you can read it on your computer) but the most important thing is this - put your sewing machine on your table, close your eyes, and put it where it's COMFORTABLE - not where you think it should be but where it feels "just right" - okay? Have fun!! :) ~M

    @LadyTburd Hi, Try local concrete builders - ask if they know where to buy the insulation - or you can cut and layer the 1/2" until it works for you. I find that it is harder to find the insulation in the warmer states - but hope you'll keep trying the big home improvement stores, or asking professionals who work with concrete because they use the foam around foundations when building. I live in Alaska so the choices here are plentiful :) Marguerita

    It's interesting that you came up with this concept, and most of what you say makes sense. However, the blue-board insulation system that you created can be improved upon.
    Please allow me to explain.
    You can still use the blue-board. But why have so many separate pieces for the extension platform table? Why not just make a tracing of the free arm. Or if you'd like, take measurements of that free arm. Transfer it to a couple pieces of foam board like what you have... Cut out the shape of your free arm in the foam board. Make both pieces identical. You can do this fairly precise so that it slides and fits fairly snug to your machine. Next, take the 2 identical foam board cutouts and join them together using an industrial double stick tape along the matching faces. When both pieces are joined together, this way you have only a single piece of foam board for your table, instead of the 4 separate pieces like you have.
    You can still flip them as you like doing to the same configuration that you enjoy using, but without all of the moving and adjusting with all the different pieces of foam board. That doesn't make much sense to me.
    The vinyl is fine, but a better option is to use plexiglass covering. You can attach the plexiglass to the foam board the same way you join the 2 foam boards together with double stick tape. The plexiglass can be cut exactly the same way as the foam board is cut so that it fits your sewing machine almost precisely, and you can have plexiglass attached to the bottom and the top. Then when you flip the board extension table over, to keep it from sliding, buy some of the anti-slip cabinet and shelf lining to lay along the edge or place directly beneath the foam board to keep it from slipping and sliding. The anti-skid mat will also protect the bottom side from scratches and damage. The plexiglass sheet will be permanently attached, but can be easily removed and replaced if damaged or badly scratched, or if it just becomes too worn out.
    There are an almost endless number of approaches to configuring an extension table for your sewing machine. You're only limited by your imagination. Your idea is a very good one, but could stand just a bit of improving, so that you aren't frustrated with continually moving, rotating and flipping 4 separate pieces and flipping and matching them before setting up to use your machine again. I hope you don't mind. I like your idea. As a handyman I have a lot of ideas, and can visualize how to make things work differently and how to improve upon existing ideas. This is why I'm suggesting the changes to improve your foam board creation. Nice work, terrific idea! And, thanks for sharing your informative video.

    Hi Marguerita, I wanted to share with your fans my results when searching for an adjustable-leg folding table to use, as you have done. I currently have not located your table (not @ Sam's club or Costco currently, unless perhaps yours locally). But, I have found the legs online, as well as other adjustable table legs, which I have used for my cutting table & a desk we made. Try searching for "folding casino table legs", I found: "Adjustable Black Legs 24-38 inches Height", Per Pair $45.44.

    Where can I find the foam sheets like you have? The reason I ask, my husband and I were only able to find the following 2 sizes, 1/2" x 4' x 8' Extruded Polystyrene Insulated Sheathing, STYROFOAM 3/4" x 4' x 8' R4 Insulated Sheathing. With these being so thin, what else can we use to lay the styrofoam up to make it flush with the arm of my sewing machine? Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated. TY

    Hello, Love the idea, but that table doesn't look stable. Does the weight of the sewing machine make the table tippy?

      Hi Debi, no, the table isn't unsteady at all however I like to put wood under a very heavy machine. I've been using these tables for ten years with 3 really heavy machines and never had a problem.

    Hi, Thank you for the videos. Is there any reason why this can't be accomplished using only styrofoam? As you mentioned, it is difficult finding insulation in warmer states. I live on Oahu. Aloha, Jozee
