Vijay Sethupathi is perfectly understated as Albert. A man who’s return to the city after many years isn’t quite what he thought it would be. He says Pinocchio is his favorite film, yet he is the most honest character in the story. Even his lies have noble intentions behind them. Him telling Maria “I’ll have anything fermented except dosa batter” when asked to come in for a drink is funny in the sardonic, smart-assy way Sethupathi is known to sardonically play smart assy characters. He enjoys the freedom he suddenly has, by claiming the city at night. Having a coffee on the street, watching a movie in a large theater, talking to a singer at a bar, eating a comically larger sizzling dish, bringing you along to each little adventure in a way only a gifted actor and their inquisitive eyes can.
Katrina too is understated. Maria isn't a particularly motherly figure, her attention wavers from her child a lot, but that’s perhaps because Maria didn’t WANT to be a mother. She wants what Albert now has, the freedom to be by herself. Katrina is understated and like her character keeps it together, rehearsed and on plan, right until the end.

Merry Christmas is a 2024 Indian mystery thriller film directed by Sriram Raghavan and starring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi. It was filmed simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil. The film is produced by Ramesh Taurani, Jaya Taurani, Sanjay Routray and Kewal Garg under Tips Films and Matchbox Pictures. It is based on Frédéric Dard's French novel Le Monte-charge (transl. Bird in a cage).
Two strangers meet on a fateful Christmas Eve. A night of delirious romance turns into a nightmare. Revealing anything more would be a crime.

It's a love story. The murder is just a sub plot 😂😂.
Its not my favourite movie but it was decent. I think the expectations were high after the director treated us with Badlapur and Andhadhun. @sucharitatyagi girl the reason I like your reviews are they are to the point. Keep up the good work. Now all eyes on Fighter. Tickets booked. It's really hard to watch most Indian movies here in the UK

As someone else called out - Katrina says that the building is empty as it’s only offices and shut for Xmas !!
But maria mentioned to the police that apart from her apartment all the other floors have offices and are empty because of christmas

The end of the movie bamboozled me. I do feel ashamed to admit, but I need to rewatch the movie again to specifically understand the end.
Otherwise, I thoroughly followed and enjoyed the movie. So many twists, symbolism, humor, emotions, aww moments, etc.
Vijay Sethupati and Katrina Kaif's chemistry was great. Sanjay Kapoor was hilarious.

This movie ticked all my check boxes criteria to watch any film. Completely worth your money/time and Delighted to watch ! Would recommend all - MUCH better than many other Hindi movies.

Vijay as always was brilliant and the direction by Sriram was fantastic.
The sound aspect is addressed by Katrina telling the detective that other floors have offices and everyone in the building are away on a holiday.
Lovely that the whole vibe of this review video from the bgm to the pace to the tone of your voice in it , has the same vibe that the film has on the surface ..😊
If you watch another movie and try to understand the text on which the two movies are based then you truly love what you are doing and that is the best thing about reviews of that Tyagi girl❤
I loved the film. It's much better then a few releases we have seen recently. I was waiting for your review but I couldn't find it. So I went forward with my trust in the director and Vijay and Katrina and I was glad I watched it. Does anyone think we need more movies from Vijay as he is so good
You should run a course on the art of watching films, Sucharita. Such masterful articulation as well. Just coming back from the theatre after watching it and I love how you give words to a viewer's feelings.
absolutely loved the movie. The contrast between its themes & cinematography along with an uneasy dark yet charming humor was brilliant to watch. So many little cues abt the movies themes placed all around the movie. Had a feeling that lateral inversion in mirrors kind of too was inculcated in the narrative given how the characters laterally invert their behaviour within scenes while still being morally kinda same(noble intentions) just like in mirrors(the movie was laced with use of mirrors in its imagery,sometimes not so subtle). Contrast between a before sunrise type meet cute and intense mysterious atmosphere too was a treat to soak in.
Even though I have watched the movie, I always come back for your review just to validate myself ke agar sucharita ko aisa laga hai toh mujhe sahi laga hai. 😄 BTW, I felt that this is not a bad movie but the director has set his standards so high after Andhadhun that anything that doesn't tops it doesn't feels good. I loved the pairing of Katrina and Vijay, and even the silliness of Sanjay kapoor and Vinay Pathak

Katrina has come a long way in terms of her acting but it was hard to read her emotions through all that botox. Am I the only one who felt like she was going to smile every time she cried?

Watched this movie in a houseful theatre, was so fun to enjoy the jokes and the twists with the reaction of a full audience !
I found the movie interesting, but in parts. Great performances, but weak story. The twist, even though it's from the book, is not credible at all. Don't know why Sriram Raghavan, after every two films or so, goes back two steps as an entertaining filmmaker. Ek Hasina Thi (brilliant debut), Johnny Gaddaar (his best movie according to me) were followed by Agent Vinod which was kinda DOA. Then came Badlapur, another movie good in parts but certain scenes were cringe (co-passengers in a train trying to place Varun Dhawan, thinking they have seen him on TV - felt like a scene from a Balki movie). Then came the thrilling Andhadhun. And suddenly, he's gone two steps back with this movie. But, imagine, he's done only 6 movies in 20 years! I wish he had been more prolific. And I hope he comes up with a masterpiece next time.

I loved the movie... fantastic work...but I still feel someone like R Madhavan would have done a better job to enact a Christian Mumbai born adult male.
Even someone like Aditi Rao Hydari would be better than Katrina Kaif..
Though both Kaif and Vijay did a decent job.
All the south indian masterpieces including drishyam are heavily inspired or copied material.Really disapponting,as bollywood is already stigmatized with plagiarism.Latest being Animal.

Merry Christmas - I liked a fair bit, but only once the 2nd half kicked in.
I struggled with Sethupathi, his hindi delivery was difficult for me to folllow, but Katrina really shone in this!!
Will watch the French movie once I'm done with Sapne VS Everyone, which I'm really enjoying 👍🏼
The second half and conclusion felt so similar to 'jaane jan'

I watched Merry Christmas - alone, in a quite afternoon...... This flim took my breath away!! Due to its Artistic Film making and suttle expressions of the actors and the editing and direction is simply supurb! This is an Oscar award winning film - for Direction and editing!! Bravo!!

The production design was an excellent backdrop for portraying the emotions as well, a dark story set in such a brilliant happy rich environment.

I saw it yesterday in Michigan, us .. and had a mixed feeling when i came out of theater coz of that simple ending which we dont associate with Sriram Sir .. but since yesterday m scratching my head did i missed something .. was there any easter eggs which i missednto find 😂

The plot twist of Merry Christmas is also similar to a Detective Conan episode "Fame and Misfortune". That's why I felt like I had seen this happen before.

I still didn't quite get the end...I mean why...Can someone explain it?
The kid said that VS was Santa who gave the Christmas ornament to her. Police can suspect that katrina had lied about the child and the first suspicion of the murder would be on her. Also she had mentioned that the child was sleeping all the while. So VS does a dedication of suspect x act and saves her by showing he stole the wallet and murdered the husband. And he gives the ring to kat showing that he has fallen in love with her.
And that the ring was what was stolen from the house which is the motive for the murder as the policeman has asked if anything was stolen …
I don't think the ring was the motive for the murder anyway. Especially since he put it on her finger. It didn't look like Katrina had lied especially since she was surprised when the kid spoke.
I kept hoping he'd hand the wallet back to Katrina to put an end to it but then he chose to hand it to the police. So, he had fallen in love?

Sucharita I have been watching the reviews of the film..it's a really bad movie. Wastage of time..I don't know why it's getting such good reviews from people like u and anupama. It's an absolutely stupid story, katrina as always delivers bad acting and overall a complete waste of money
I think it may work for some, may not for the others. Absolutely worked for me. Go watch it as a romance and not a thriller
